Fabrication of an Fe-Doped ZIF-67 Derived Magnetic Fe/Co/C Composite for Effective Removal of Congo Red

Yu Cao,Zeming Dai,Xuan Zhou,Yuting Lin,Jianhua Hou

The dyes in printing and dyeing wastewater are harmful to the human body and the environment. It is essential to develop practical and effective adsorbents to deal with them. In this study, an Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived Fe/Co/C composite material with strong magnetism was successfully synthesized. The effects of pH, initial concentration, and adsorption time on the properties of the adsorbent were investigated. To further improve the removal efficiency and enhance the practicality, potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was added to the system due to its Fenton-like effect. Then, an Fe/Co/C composite was used with PMS to remove Congo red (CR) with a 98% removal of 250 mg·L−1. Moreover, for its high saturation magnetization of 85.4 emu·g−1, the Fe/Co/C composite can be easily recovered by applying a magnetic field, solving the problem that powdery functional materials are difficult to recover and, thus, avoiding secondary pollution. Furthermore, since the composite material was doped before carbonization, this synthetic strategy is flexible and the required metal elements can be added at will to achieve different purposes. This study demonstrates that this Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived magnetic material has potential application prospects for dye adsorption.

Fe-doped Ni nanocrystals as a cocatalyst for efficient BiVO4 photoanode: Mechanism insights into Fe-accelerated in-situ reconstruction

Xing Cao,Qianxi Dang,Huanhui Chen,Yubin Zhao,Ya Liu,Junrong Zeng,Qing Ma,Liubiao Zhong,Dayou Wang,Yejun Qiu

To address the severe carrier recombination in BiVO 4 -based Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, we developed Fe-doped Ni nanocrystals (Fe:Ni NCs) through an organic liquid phase synthesis as an efficient cocatalyst. Through a dip-coating and annealing modification process, the optimized Fe:Ni/BiVO 4 photoanode achieved a remarkable photocurrent density of 4.72 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, representing a 4.07-fold enhancement over pristine BiVO 4 . In-situ Raman characterization revealed that Fe:Ni NCs on BiVO 4 underwent in-situ surface reconstruction to form a unique Fe:Ni@Fe:NiOOH core–shell structure during PEC reaction. The presence of Fe accelerated the conversion of Ni to active NiOOH at lower potential (0.25 V vs. RHE) compared to pure Ni NCs modified BiVO 4 photoanode (0.30 V vs. RHE). Mechanistic studies identified a dual activation pathway involving both applied potential and BiVO 4 valence band oxidation. Meanwhile, Fe:Ni NCs cores with high conductivity accelerated the migration and accumulation of holes into Fe:NiOOH shells, resulting in improved carrier injection efficiency and water oxidation kinetics. This work not only elucidates fundamental differences between PEC and electrocatalytic water splitting mechanisms but also provides a reference for designing high-performance PEC photoanodes.

MOF-Fe@C Nanocomposites for Microwave Absorption

Rongjuan Zhang,Qi Hu,Shaobo Yang,Song Yan,Yaxin Gu,Jiawei Ji,Zheng Zhou,Chaoze Liu,Xinran Li,Zihao Wang,Chengchun Tang

The arrival of the 5 G era has brought great benefits to our lives, but it has also brought problems such as electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, the demand for lightweight, high-performance microwave absorbing materials with wide effective bandwidth is increasing. Herein, MIL-53/g-C 3 N 4 is first synthesized from precursors of ferric chloride, terephthalic acid, and g-C 3 N 4 , and then thermally annealed at different temperatures to generate MOF-Fe@C nanocomposites. Heat treatment can effectively carbonize g-C 3 N 4 to amorphous carbon and reduce iron in MIL-53 to magnetic Fe and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles through carbon-thermal reduction reaction. The synergistic effect of dielectric loss of amorphous carbon and magnetic losses of magnetic particles enhances attenuation and improves impedance matching, enhancing microwave absorption. The RL min of MOF-Fe@C(4)-700 is as low as -72.78 dB at 9.44 GHz at a thickness of 3.18 mm and its effective absorption bandwidth is as broad as 4.88 GHz, covering most of X-band frequency range. The research introduces a novel technique for synthesizing absorbers with controllable electromagnetic characteristics by incorporating g-C 3 N 4 as carbon sources into MOF materials.

Bright-green-emissive nitrogen-doped carbon dots as a nanoprobe for bifunctional sensing, its logic gate operation and cellular imaging

Fangfang Du,Xiaojuan Gong,Wenjing Lu,Yang Liu,Yifang Gao,Shaomin Shuang,Ming Xian,Chuan Dong

A fluorescent nanoprobe based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with green fluorescent emission have been fabricated through a facile one-step hydrothermal treatment using catechol and triethylene tetramine as precursors. The obtained N-CDs with excellent luminescent properties and superior biocompatibility have been applied for the development of a bifunctional sensor for the detection of Fe 3+ and ascorbic acid (AA). Fe 3+ that are tightly chelating the surface of N-CDs can induce fluorescence (FL) quenching of N-CDs through photo-induced electron transfer (PET). Meanwhile, the addition of AA serves to shelter the CDs effectively from being quenched by Fe 3+ due to AA, as an antioxidant , enable easy-conversion of Fe 3+ to reduced states (i.e. Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ ). The N-CDs are used as a facile and label-free “on-off-on” fluorescent nanoprobe for the determination of Fe 3+ and AA with detection limits of 58.82   nM and 0.236   µM with the corresponding linear ranges of 25–200   µM and 25–300   µM, respectively. According to this phenomenon, an “AND” logic gate based on the novel N-CDs has been constructed. As-prepared N-CDs with negligible toxicity and perfect biocompatibility were expanded for cellular imaging and sensing Fe 3+ and AA in living cell, which enlarges the application range of the N-CDs. Most importantly, the as-constructed fluorescent sensing system was successfully applied to detection of Fe 3+ in tap water and the analyses of AA in fresh fruits with satisfactory results.

Fe-based metal-organic frameworks as Fenton-like catalysts for highly efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride over a wide pH range: Acceleration of Fe(II)/ Fe(III) cycle under visible light irradiation

Qiangshun Wu,Hanpei Yang,Li Kang,Zhao Gao,Feifan Ren

In this work, a series of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were synthesized and served as Fenton-like catalysts for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC–HCl) degradation. Herein, for the first time, we have demonstrated that visible light can accelerate Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle in the photo-Fenton system based on iron-oxo (Fe-O) clusters in frameworks. Among these Fe-MOFs, MIL-101 possessed the highest activity mainly ascribed to its largest specific surface area and pore volume, and the most coordinatively unsaturated iron sites. The synergistic effect in the MIL-101/H 2 O 2 /visible light system was derived from the efficient separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Due to the function of solid acid catalysts, MIL-101 extended effective pH range up to 10.2 and exhibited good reusability and stability. Hydroxyl radicals generated from H 2 O 2 coordinated at iron active sites were determined as the main reactive oxidative species and acceleration of Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle was responsible for highly effective degradation of TC–HCl.

Elevation of NO production increases Fe immobilization in the Fe-deficiency roots apoplast by decreasing pectin methylation of cell wall

Ye Yi Quan,Jin Chong Wei,Fan Shi Kai,Mao Qian Qian,Sun Cheng Liang,Yu Yan,Lin Xian Yong

Cell wall is the major component of root apoplast which is the main reservoir for iron in roots, while nitric oxide (NO) is involved in regulating the synthesis of cell wall. However, whether such regulation could influence the reutilization of iron stored in root apoplast remains unclear. In this study, we observed that iron deficiency elevated NO level in tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ) roots. However, application of S-nitrosoglutathione, a NO donor, significantly enhanced iron retention in root apoplast of iron-deficient plants, accompanied with a decrease of iron level in xylem sap. Consequently, S-nitrosoglutathione treatment increased iron concentration in roots, but decreased it in shoots. The opposite was true for the NO scavenging treatment with 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO). Interestingly, S-nitrosoglutathione treatment increased pectin methylesterase activity and decreased degree of pectin methylation in root cell wall of both iron-deficient and iron-sufficient plants, which led to an increased iron retention in pectin fraction, thus increasing the binding capacity of iron to the extracted cell wall. Altogether, these results suggested that iron-deficiency-induced elevation of NO increases iron immobilization in root apoplast by decreasing pectin methylation in cell wall.

Template-Assisted Construction of Atomically Dispersed Fe-N-C Catalysts With Dense Fe-N4C Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Lijuan Wang,Jie Hou,Wubo Wan,Yongjie Mo,Zhijian Liao,Shengkui Zhong,Linhua Zhu

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Atomically dispersed iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts have emerged as promising alternatives for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) owing to their highly atomic utilization. However, maintaining both Fe atomic dispersion and dense Fe-N x sites (typically below 2 wt%) in Fe-N-C catalysts is still a key challenge. In this investigation, a template (1,2-dicyanobenzene; DCB) assisted strategy has been reported to achieve hierarchically porous Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C catalysts, which have atomically dispersed Fe-N 4 C active sites with a 5.45 wt% Fe loading and served for robust ORR. 1,2-dicyanobenzene containing abundant nitrogen source not only efficiently enhances the coordinated environment for dense Fe sites, but also facilitates the formation of a hierarchical porous structure in Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C catalyst. Computational analysis demonstrated that template-assisted structural modification effectively reduces the energy barrier associated with *OOH intermediate formation while simultaneously adjusting the d-band center position of Fe-N 4 C coordination sites within the Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C system. This optimization enhances the stabilization of oxygen-bearing intermediates and promotes accelerated kinetics of the ORR. Consequently, the Fe-N/C DCB0.2 -900°C exhibited a half-potential of 0.9 V versus RHE when evaluated in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte and achieved a peak power density of 220 mW cm −2 in a zinc–air battery, surpassing commercial Pt/C (0.88 V vs. RHE, 194 mW cm −2 ). Such methodology provides a new avenue for constructing dense metal active sites for achieving functional, but not limited to, ORR, catalysts and applications. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 原子分散的铁-氮-碳(Fe-N-C)催化剂因其高原子利用率,已成为很有前景的氧还原反应(ORR)替代催化剂。

Synergistic Fe-N dual sites of amino-functionalized MIL-101(Fe) modified polypropylene separators enable high-performance lithium metal batteries

Yu Xia,Aiping Wang,Qiao Hu,Guangming Han,Kaidi Gao,Yangyang Gao,Ruize Wang,Yongqi Wang,Jianfeng Yao

A well-designed Fe-N dual sites amino-functionalized (MIL-101(Fe)-NH 2 ) separator is fabricated. • The unsaturated Fe sites in the MOF act as strong anionphilic modifiers to adsorb PF 6 − . • The polar -NH 2 groups act as Lewis's base sites to enhance electrolyte wettability. • The synergistic Fe-N sites induce the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase. • This separator can regulate lithium deposition and enable high-performance lithium metal batteries. Lithium-based batteries utilizing metallic lithium anodes have attracted widespread research interest due to their exceptional theoretical energy density. However, the growth of dendritic lithium structures, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and associated safety concerns pose substantial obstacles to their commercial application. Traditional polypropylene (PP) separators suffer from poor electrolyte affinity and electrochemical inertness, causing heterogeneous Li + distribution and severe interfacial polarization. Herein, an amino-functionalized MIL-101(Fe)-modified PP separator is successfully developed to regulate Li deposition through the synergistic effects of Fe-N dual active sites. The unsaturated Fe sites in the MOF act as strong anionphilic modifiers to adsorb PF 6 − and suppress anion migration; the polar -NH 2 groups act as Lewis's base sites to enhance electrolyte wettability and accelerate ion transport. These synergistic Fe-N sites induce the in-situ formation of a stable LiF/Li 3 N-rich and flexible inorganic-organic hybrid SEI, preventing the penetration of dendritic lithium. Electrochemical testing reveals that the Li|Li symmetric cells achieve more than 650 h of uniform lithium deposition and also stable cycling at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the LiFePO 4 |Li cells and the LiFe 0.5 Mn 0.5 PO 4 |Li cells employing this modified separator demonstrate superior cycling stability and enhanced rate capability. Modifying separators with functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a plausible strategy to improve the performance of electrochemical batteries, contributing to an in-depth discussion of the application of MOFs in lithium battery technology. Amino-functionalized separators (PP@MIL-101-NH 2 ) are successfully designed to regulate ion transport for high-performance lithium metal batteries. The unsaturated Fe sites in the MOF act as strong anionphilic modifiers to adsorb PF 6 − ; the polar -NH 2 groups act as Lewis's base sites to enhance electrolyte wettability. Synergistic Fe-N sites induce the formation of a stable LiF/Li 3 N-rich solid electrolyte interphase, preventing the penetration of dendritic lithium. Fe-Assisted Nitridation-Induced Reconstruction of Mo-Fe-Ni Molybdates Enables Durable Alkaline Seawater Oxygen Evolution and Zn-Air Batteries

Hamza M. Haruna,Yanxiang He,Zhixiao Zhu,Hao Yang,Selvam Mathi,Guanhua Zhang,Zhongmin Wang,M. Sadeeq Balogun

Controlling phase evolution during nitridation is essential for creating active interfaces in multi-metal electrocatalysts. However, the nitridation pathways in complex systems such as Mo-Fe-Ni molybdates remain poorly defined. Herein, tuning the Fe contents in the Fe-Mo precursor directly governs ammonia activation and drives nitridation-induced reconstruction. Increasing Fe concentration promotes NH3 decomposition, shifting the product from an oxide-rich phase (N-doped MoO2-FeMoO4-NiMoO4-NiO, denoted N/MoO2-MoFeNi-O) to a nitride-dominated heterostructure comprising MoO2, Mo2N, FeN and Ni4N (N/MoO2-MoFeNi-N). The optmized N/MoO2-MoFeNi-N nitride-oxide interfaces enhance electrical conductivity, optimize oxygen-intermediate adsorption, and improve corrosion resistance. As a result, N/MoO2-MoFeNi-N exhibits superior oxygen evolution performance in both alkaline freshwater and seawater, requiring overpotentials of only 309/392 and 334/499 mV to reach 500 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively. DFT calculations identify the MoO2@FeN interface is the most active site with the lowest energetic barrier for the potential-limiting step. The catalyst also demonstrates efficient oxygen reduction activity, enabling high-performance zinc-air batteries with open-circuit voltage of 1.33 V, peak power density of 84.2 mW cm-2, and stable cycling over 140 h. This work clarifies the role of Fe in directing nitridation pathways, providing a rational route to construct durable, interface-rich nitride-oxide architectures for advanced oxygen atalysis.

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia using Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles as electrocatalysts: The synergistic contribution from Fe and oxygen vacancy

Wenqiang Cao,Xiyu He,Xiyang Cai,Qiaodan Hu,Junliang Zhang,Fan Yang

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction offers a sustainable approach to ammonia synthesis while simultaneously addressing nitrate contamination. Electrocatalysts with high activity, long durability and affordable cost are essential for advancing this field. This study demonstrates that Fe-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route exhibit competitive electrocatalytic performances for nitrate-to-ammonia conversion. A faradaic efficiency (FE) of 82.3 %, an ammonia yield of 5.953 mg·cm −2 ·h −1 , and a selectivity of 85 % can be achieved and maintained in 10 cycles with a total duration of 60 h in alkaline electrolyte. These metrics substantially outperform the pristine TiO 2 . Defect chemistry analysis and DFT calculations reveal that Fe doping creates oxygen vacancies, and introduces impurity energy levels in the bandgap to improve the electrical conductivity of TiO 2 . Fe and oxygen vacancies synergistically modulate the nitrate adsorption energy, and the Fe active site further reduces the energy barrier for the rate-limiting step and suppresses the competing reactions, thereby effectively promoting ammonia synthesis.

Synergistic effect of Fe and Ce on Fe doped CeO2 for catalytic ozonation of amoxicillin: Efficiency evaluation and mechanism study

Dongping Zhang,Yongdi Liu,Yanyu Song,Xianbo Sun,Wen Liu,Jun Duan,Zhengqing Cai

A Fe-doped CeO 2 was fabricated for catalytic ozonation of Amoxicillin (AMX), and the catalytic mechanisms were explored in this study. Under optimal conditions (the initial solution pH of 7.0, FC-0.3 dosage of 0.5 g/L, O 3 dosage of 4 mg/min), the AMX and TOC removal by the optimal material (FC-0.3, at Fe/Ce atomic ratio of 0.3) reached 98.1 % at 24 min and 55.2 % at 36 min, respectively. Improved the AMX mineralization efficiency by 3.7 times. The experiments and theoretical calculation reveal the mechanisms of promoted catalytic ozonation by FC-0.3: 1) Highly abundant surface-active sites (i.e., –OH) enabled the adsorption of H 2 O and O 3 , which was favorable to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improved the reaction probability for ROS and contaminants. 2) The synergistic effect between Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couples accelerated the electron transfer and formation of ROS. More than 42 % of •OH was generated in the presence of FC-0.3, and the •OH, •O 2 − and 1 O 2 were the main ROS that contributed to AMX degradation. The surface OH groups played a key role in the catalytic ozonation. The oxygen vacancies (OVs) played an important role in electron transfer, Ce and Fe were the active sites of electrons transfer following the sequence of (Ce 3+ + Fe 2+ ) → (Ce 4+ + Fe 3+ ) → (Ce 3+ + Fe 2+ ) redox reaction. The degradation pathway investigation and toxicity evaluation revealed that some more toxic intermediates were generated during the ozonation process, and sufficient mineralization is required to meet safe discharge. This study provides reference for the synthesis of new catalysts and insight into the reaction mechanisms in the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process.
