A pyrene-based covalent organic framework fluorescence sensor with dual response for highly sensitive detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+

You Mei,Zhou Zixuan,Yan Xinying,Xie Haotian,Chen Xueke,Zhang Jing,Liao Fusheng,Wei Guobing,Fan Hao,Yin Zhaojiang

In this study, we developed a fluorescent sensor based on a pyrene-derived covalent organic framework (PT 2 D-COFs) for the efficient and sensitive detection of copper ions (Cu 2+ ) and iron ions (Fe 3+ ). The PT 2 D-COFs are synthesized via a Schiff base reaction, exhibiting high crystallinity, excellent porosity, and remarkable chemical stability, which provide ideal coordination sites for the effective recognition of metal ions. The results demonstrate that the PT 2 D-COFs exhibit significant fluorescence quenching upon interaction with Cu 2 ⁺, with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.79 nM, while fluorescence enhancement is observed in the presence of Fe 3+ , with an LOD of 0.47 nM. and reproducibility in complex sample matrices. It was effectively utilized to quantify Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in environmental water samples and traditional Chinese herbal medicines, achieving satisfactory recovery rates. This sensor demonstrates characterized by its low detection limits, strong anti-interference capability, and broad application potential, holds significant promise for applications in environmental monitoring and bioanalysis. Temperature-Driven Emissive Pathway Switching through Surface Chemical Evolution in Boron-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Sensitive Fe3+ Sensing

Wang Hongcan,Wei Yushuang,Lai Qin,Xu Cheng,Wang Meiying,Liu Hong,Li Guanmou,Yuan Bing

Boron-doped carbon quantum dots (BCQDs) exhibit attractive optical properties for sensing and bioimaging, yet the relationship between synthesis conditions, surface chemistry, and fluorescence regulation remains incompletely understood. Here, we demonstrate that the emission behavior of BCQDs can be effectively tuned through temperature-controlled solvothermal synthesis. Increasing the reaction temperature progressively suppresses the intrinsic blue emission (450 nm) while enhancing a defect-associated green emission (540 nm) without appreciably changing the particle size. Spectroscopic characterization indicates that this transition is accompanied by temperature-dependent surface chemical evolution, including increased oxygen-containing functionalities and reconstruction of heteroatom-containing surface states. Benefiting from the defect-enriched surface, BCQD200 exhibits highly selective fluorescence quenching toward Fe 3+ with a detection limit of 50 nM. Spectroscopic, temperature-dependent fluorescence, and dynamic light scattering analyses further suggest that Fe 3+ sensing involves surface coordination accompanied by charge-transfer interactions and BCQD-Fe 3+ assembly. These findings provide insights into how synthesis-controlled surface chemistry regulates the photophysical properties and sensing performance of boron-doped carbon quantum dots, offering an effective strategy for developing high-performance fluorescent nanoprobes.

Enhancing the Reverse Flotation Separation of Ultrafine Apatite and Quartz Using XG-Fe3+ as a Selective Depressant and Flocculant

Zhili Li,Zongyu Zheng,Dongsheng He,Guilan Liu,Hua Liu,Wei Xu,Yun Tang,Hongsheng Shao,Lianjun Shi,Yuan Tang,Yanhong Fu,Wanqing Li

The separation of ultrafine apatite from quartz through reverse flotation is a challenge due to its low mass and high specific surface area. In this work, xanthan gum–Fe3+(XG–Fe3+) was explored as a novel and efficient depressant–flocculant for the selective flotation separation of apatite and quartz. The flotation performance and separation selectivity of XG–Fe3+were systematically assessed using micro-flotation tests. The mechanisms were revealed through turbidity analysis, microscopic observation, contact angle measurement, zeta potential, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Flotation results illustrated that XG-Fe3+strongly depressed the flotation of apatite, while it hardly affected the flotation of quartz. Turbidity analysis and microscopic observation indicated the flocculation of fine apatite in the presence of XG-Fe3+, while no flocculation was found for quartz. Contact angle, zeta potential and FTIR results indicated that XG-Fe3+was chemically adsorbed onto the apatite surface, hindering the adsorption of dodecylamine (DDA) and maintaining the hydrophilicity of apatite. XG-Fe3+enhanced the flotation separation of ultrafine apatite from quartz by maintaining the hydrophilicity of ultrafine apatite while simultaneously reducing its entrainment into the froth via selective flocculation.

Green production of fluorescent carbon quantum dots based on pine wood and its application in the detection of Fe3+

Siyu Zhao,Xueping Song,Xinyu Chai,Peitao Zhao,Hui He,Zhenwei Liu

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have novel applications as fluorescent nanomaterials in various fields. In this study, a green hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) method is proposed to produce CQDs from pine wood (P-CQDs). The P-CQDs exhibited excellent fluorescence characteristics, with the optimal excitation wavelength being 330 nm and a corresponding emission wavelength of 447 nm. A blue light emission under ultraviolet light was observed and a typical graphene structure was seen in the HR-TEM images with a fringe spacing of 0.21 nm. Moreover, the mechanism of P-CQD formation during the HTC process was proposed. It was observed that P-CQDs demonstrated an aromatic polymer structure rich in oxygen-containing groups. This is because of the condensation, chain breaking, and chain forming reactions occurring among the hydrolytic products of the cellulose , hemicellulose , and lignin in pine wood. The fluorescence quenching results indicated that the P-CQDs selectively detected Fe 3+ in an aqueous phase . This implies that these CQDs have broad application prospects for Fe 3+ detection. More importantly, this signifies that the large-scale and low-cost production of CQDs and Fe 3+ sensors will now be possible.

Highly Efficient Tannic Acid (TA) -Iron Ion (Fe3+) Modification of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Fibers for High-Performance Polymer Composites

Zeguang Yang,Zhi Gao,Hongwei He,Lan Jia,Fuyong Liu,Wenwen Yu,Yonggang Li

The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers surfaces were modified by complexing tannic acid (TA)-iron ions (Fe3+) to form a metal skeleton structure on the fibers. In this system a large number of phenolic hydroxyl groups, epoxy groups and other active groups on the fibers surfaces can stabilize the metal skeleton structure and enhance the interfacial peeling performance between the fibers and the composite rubber matrix. The modified PET fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties. The results showed that the peeling strength between the modified fibers and the rubber matrix was increased 45%. This method has the advantages of simple operation, mild conditions and low cost, which provides a new idea for the preparation of rubber/polyester fiber composites with excellent mechanical properties.

High foliar retention tannic acid/Fe3+ functionalized Ti-pillared montmorillonite pesticide formulation with pH-responsibility and high UV stability

Huayao Chen,Jinghui Zhan,Li Man,Hongkai Deng,Hongjun Zhou,Li Hao,Xinhua Zhou

The large losses and UV-light instability of traditional pesticide formulations during spraying lead to low drug utilization and a threat to the environment and human health. In this work, a tannic acid and iron ion functionalized titanium dioxide pillared montmorillonite drug sustained-release system was successfully prepared. Pillared montmorillonite showed good foliar retention after tannin modification to prevent the loss of the drug during spraying. Under the irradiation of UV light, the shielding and absorption of UV light by the montmorillonite sheet, TiO 2 and tannic acid coating greatly enhanced UV stability of the avermectin (AVM). In addition, AVM@Fe-TA-TiPMt also showed pH response release due to the ion exchange and disintegration of the coating. With the disintegration of tannic acid coating and the release of tannic acid molecules, AVM was rapidly released below pH 7. AVM@Fe-TA-TiPMt exhibited enhanced insecticidal effect due to the excellent foliar retention effect and high drug release. The tannic acid-functionalized sustained-release system has achieved high foliar retention, UV stability and pH-responsive release, which is conducive to the efficient utilization of pesticides and provides valuable information for the development of clay-based pesticide formulations in the future.

Gold nanoclusters Cys-Au NCs as selective fluorescent probes for “on–off–on” detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid

Wenjie Luo,Changxu Wang,Jieshu Min,Huiyu Luo

Gold nanoclusters exhibit attractive properties owing to their excellent biocompatibility and strong photostability in the biomedical domain. In this research, cysteine-protected fluorescent gold nanoclusters (Cys-Au NCs) were synthesized via decomposing Au(I)–thiolate complexes for the detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid in a bidirectional “on–off–on” mode. Meanwhile, the detailed characterization confirmed that the mean particle size of the prepared fluorescent probe was 2.43 nm and showed a fluorescence quantum yield of 3.31%. In addition, our results indicate that the fluorescence probe for ferric ions exhibited a broad detection scope ranging from 0.1 to 2000 μM and excellent selectivity. The as-prepared Cys-Au NCs/Fe3+ was demonstrated to be an ultrasensitive and selective nanoprobe for the detection of ascorbic acid. This study indicated that the “on–off–on” fluorescent probes Cys-Au NCs held a promising application for the bidirectional detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid. Furthermore, our novel “on–off–on” fluorescent probes provided insight into the rational design of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters for biochemical analysis of high selectivity and sensitivity.

Turning Agroforestry Waste into Value-Added Fluorescent Carbon Quantum Dots for Effective Detection of Fe3+ in an Aqueous Environment

Haitao Ren,Fan Qi,Abdelkader Labidi,Ahmed A. Allam,Jamaan S. Ajarem,Detlef W. Bahnemann,Chuanyi Wang

In the context of the circular economy, the high quantity of agroforestry waste should be transformed into sustainable and high-value materials to abate pollution, CO2 emissions, and expensive waste disposal. Herein, the agroforestry waste of apple leaves was initially used as a precursor to extract the value-added nanomaterial carbon quantum dots (CQDs) by way of an easy hydrothermal strategy without complicated purification processes, as extracted CQDs doped with N and P possess a typical graphite-like structure, a fine particle size of 2.0 nm, and excitation-dependent photoluminescence (PL) behavior. The doping of N and P endows CQDs with a much higher quantum yield (18.1%), good water solubility, high fluorescence stability, and specific recognition ability for the detection of Fe3+. The fluorescence of CQDs could be quickly quenched by Fe3+ within 1 min and recovered with the addition of ascorbic acid, suggesting the recyclability of the prepared CQD-based fluorescent probe. Systematic analyses support that a synergistic mechanism of static fluorescence quenching and inner filter effect was involved in the detection of Fe3+ by CQDs, showing a linear range between 0 and 160 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.0 μM. Furthermore, the feasibility of detecting Fe3+ by CQDs in practice was verified by tap water/lake water samples. The present work evinces that apple leaves are useful in producing green and low-cost CQDs as a promising fluorescent probe for sensitive, rapid, and selective detection of Fe3+ in an aqueous environment.

Boron promoted Fe3+/peracetic acid process for sulfamethazine degradation: Efficiency, role of boron, and identification of the reactive species

Yanhong Zhang,Guangbing Liu,Yuzhu Xue,Lichun Fu,Yawei Qian,Minhui Hou,Xiang Li,Chen Ling,Ying Zhang,Yuwei Pan

In this work, boron (B) was used to promote Fe 3+ /peracetic acid (Fe 3+ /PAA) for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT). An SMT degradation efficiency of 9.1% was observed in the Fe 3+ /PAA system over 60 min, which was significantly increased to 99.3% in the B/Fe 3+ /PAA system over 10 min. The B/Fe 3+ /PAA process also exhibited superior resistance to natural substances, excellent adaptability to different harmful substances, and good removal of antibiotics in natural fresh water samples. The mechanism of action of boron for Fe 3+ reduction was determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and electrochemical tests. The dominant role of • OH was confirmed using quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and quantitative tests. Organic radicals (R-O • ) and Fe(IV) also significantly contribute to the removal of SMT. DFT calculations on the reaction between Fe 2+ and the PAA were conducted to further determine the contribution from • OH, R-O • , and Fe(IV) from the perspective of thermodynamics and the reaction pathways. Different boron dosages, Fe 3+ dosages, and initial pH values were also investigated in the B/Fe 3+ /PAA system to study their effect of SMT removal and the production of the reactive species. Fe(IV) production determined the k R-O•+Fe(IV) value suggesting that Fe(IV) may play a more important role than R-O • . A comparison of the results with other processes has also proved that the procedure described in this study (B/Fe 3+ /PAA) is an effective method for the degradation of antibiotics.

Synergistic effect between tannic acid-Fe3+ and chitosan hydrogel-coated covalent organic framework: Endowing better nanofiltration performance and stability

Liangxiu Tang,Jilai Gong,Juan Li,Siyuan Fang,Yuwen Wang,Huaiyang Zhou

The weak interfacial interaction of nanomaterials and substrate is an important factor affecting the stability and rejection of nanofiltration membranes. Herein, two materials of covalent organic framework modified by chitosan hydrogels (CH@COF) and tannic acid (TA)-Fe 3+ served as an interlayer of the thin-film composite (TFC) membrane to overcome this problem. The synergistic effect between CH@COF and TA-Fe (such as constructing stable chemical bonds between the polyamide layer and substrate, increasing the degree of cross-linking of the polyamide layer, and decreasing its thickness) endows the TFC/TA-Fe(CH@COF) membrane with excellent nanofiltration performance and stability. Its water permeability was 16.17 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , which was 185% of that of the TFC-control membrane (8.74 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ), and the rejections of the membrane for norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin were 94.89%, 99.07%, and 99.10%, respectively. In addition, its flux recovery rate (FRR) values for high-concentration sodium alginate and bovine serum albumin were 98.32% and 97.99%, respectively, indicating outstanding antifouling performance. This work emphasizes the synergy and potential of different materials as an interlayer in high-performance TFC membranes.

Mass Transfer-Promoted Fe2+/Fe3+ Circulation Steered by 3D Flow-Through Co-Catalyst System Toward Sustainable Advanced Oxidation Processes

Weiyang Lv,Hao Li,Jinhui Wang,Lixin Wang,Zenglong Wu,Yuge Wang,Wenkai Song,Wenkai Cheng,Yuyuan Yao

Realizing fast and continuous generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) via iron-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is significant in the environmental and biological fields. However, current AOPs assisted by co-catalysts still suffer from the poor mass/electron transfer and non-durable promotion effect, giving rise to the sluggish Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle and low dynamic concentration of Fe 2+ for ROS production. Herein, we present a three-dimensional (3D) macroscale co-catalyst functionalized with MoS 2 to achieve ultra-efficient Fe 2+ regeneration (equilibrium Fe 2+ ratio of 82.4%) and remarkable stability (more than 20 cycles) via a circulating flow-through process. Unlike the conventional batch-type reactor, experiments and computational fluid dynamics simulations demonstrate that the optimal utilization of the 3D active area under the flow-through mode, initiated by the convection-enhanced mass/charge transfer for Fe 2+ reduction and then strengthened by MoS 2 -induced flow rotation for sufficient reactant mixing, is crucial for oxidant activation and subsequent ROS generation. Strikingly, the flow-through co-catalytic system with superwetting capabilities can even tackle the intricate oily wastewater stabilized by different surfactants without the loss of pollutant degradation efficiency. Our findings highlight an innovative co-catalyst system design to expand the applicability of AOPs based technology, especially in large-scale complex wastewater treatment.

Ruiyun You,Minling Li,Wenting Liu,Shitong Zhang,Siying Xiao,Xiufeng Xiao,Zheng Lin,Yudong Lu

Oxidative stress is one of the factors that promote melanogenesis . Trivalent iron ions play a key role in regulating the iron-catalysed oxidative stress response. A novel SERS flexible membrane sensor based on tannic acid with good sensitivity and uniformity was prepared by green in situ reduction of gold nanoparticles on bacterial cellulose membrane(BCM)with a simple and highly selective method to detect Fe 3+ . Under alkaline conditions, Fe 3+ is adsorbed on the BCM-TA@Au NPs flexible membrane by tannic acid (TA) through chelation, thus enabling the detection of Fe 3+ . Furthermore, this simple detection system has a wide linear detection range and high sensitivity to effortlessly evaluate Fe 3+ at concentrations up to 10 −7 M. More importantly, the proposed SERS flexible substrate performed well in determining Fe 3+ concentrations in B16 melanocytes , providing new insights into the factors affecting the melanin synthesis pathway and providing a potential biomarker for melanoma treatment.
