Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is a member of Orthopoxvirus in the Poxviridae family, causing a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The number of cases and geographic range has increased significantly in 2022. Identification of MPXV-specific therapeutic targets is urgent. G-quadruplex (GQ) secondary structures attract great attention as potential targets for antiviral strategy. Whether GQs are present in the MPXV genome remains inconclusive. In this study, we aim to characterize the GQs encoded by MPXV. Through a series of biophysical experiments, we characterized the formation potential of MPXV-encoded GQs and evaluated the binding and stabilization abilities of GQ ligands including BRACO-19, pyridostatin, and TMPyP4 to GQs encoded by MPXV. Moreover, GQ ligands suppressed the gene transcription of MPXV sequences containing GQ. BRACO-19 and TMPyP4 were able to inhibit vaccinia virus replication. We demonstrated the existence of MPXV GQ and reinforced the idea that GQs could be novel antiviral targets. Targeting these GQ sequences with GQ-binding molecules may represent a new approach for MPXV therapy.

Photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production is an eco-friendly technique because only H 2 O, molecular O 2 and light are involved. However, it still confronts the challenges of the unsatisfactory productivity of H 2 O 2 and the dependence on organic electron donors or high purity O 2 , which restrict the practical application. Herein, we construct a type-II heterojunction of the protonated g-C 3 N 4 coated Co 9 S 8 semiconductor for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. The ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 uniformly spreads on the surface of the dispersed Co 9 S 8 nanosheets by a two-step method of protonation and dip-coating, and exhibits improved photogenerated electrons transportability and e - -h + pairs separation ability. The photocatalytic system can achieve a considerable productivity of H 2 O 2 to 2.17 mM for 5 h in alkaline medium in the absence of the organic electron donors and pure O 2 . The optimal photocatalyst also obtains the highest apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 18.10% under 450 nm of light irradiation, as well as a good reusability. The contribution of the type-II heterojunction is that the migrations of electrons and holes within the interface between g-C 3 N 4 and Co 9 S 8 matrix promote the separation of photocarriers, and another channel is also opened for H 2 O 2 generation. The accumulated electrons in conduction band (CB) of Co 9 S 8 contribute to the major channel of two-electron reduction of O 2 for H 2 O 2 production. Meanwhile, the electrons in CB of g-C 3 N 4 participate in the single electron reduction of O 2 as an auxiliary channel to enhance the H 2 O 2 production.

Designing visible-light-driven, high-efficiency, robust photocatalysts with practical potential is an important direction in the photocatalysis field. Herein, pyrimidine-modified g-C 3 N 4 (Pym-CN) photocatalysts with curled nanosheet morphology were prepared through a facile supramolecular assembly method. Pyrimidine has only two N atoms, thus leading to the deficiency formation in the supramolecular assembly of cyanuric acid with melamine. Upon calcination, the deficiency decreases the polycondensation degree of g-C 3 N 4 , thereby further affecting its morphology and optoelectronic property. The pyrimidine modification can enhance the absorption capacity toward visible light and facilitates the separation of photo-generated carriers. By changing the adding amount of pyrimidine, the optimal Pym-CN photocatalyst exhibits a H 2 evolution rate of 1046 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light, which is almost 30 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This work may afford a novel approach to modifying organic polymer semiconductor photocatalysts with small organic molecules of nonplanar structure.

The shortcomings of homogeneous activation for metal/sulfite such as narrow pH range, recovery and potential secondary contamination seriously limit the application of metal/sulfite systems in practical conditions. To overcome these drawbacks, we tested the degradation of metronidazole using an iron-doped graphite carbonitride (5%Fe-g-C 3 N 4 ) as the catalyst to activate sulfite. The mechanism of the reaction was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, radical quenching and chemical probe experiment. The effects of pH, Fe-g-C 3 N 4 , sulfite dosages and common anions were assessed and the degradation pathway of MNZ was also proposed. The results showed that 5%Fe-g-C 3 N 4 was an effective catalyst for sulfite activation in the heterogeneous system and SO 4 − and OH were the main radicals leading to the degradation of metronidazole. After five times of recycle, Fe-g-C 3 N 4 still had a good catalytic activity. Moreover, the Fe-g-C 3 N 4 /sulfite system could degrade metronidazole at a wide pH range of 4–9.

The commercial application of silicon is still impeded by poor conductivity and significant volume change. In this work, a C@Si@G composite was synthesized by a facile chemical solution reaction and carbonization procedure with cocoon silk as a natural carbon source. This composite has a sandwich structure, where Si nanoparticles as a sandwich middle layer and graphene (G) as an out layer. And it possesses the advantages of flexible, nitrogen-doped and is environmentally friendly. The optimized C@Si@G-15 composite is used as a self-supporting anode without a current collector, and it shows a reversible discharge capacity of 972 mAh g −1 after 120 cycles at 1 A g −1 and a relatively high capacity of 1070 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 200 mA g −1 , demonstrating the effect of coating the N-doped carbonized silk and the graphene synergistically to improve electrical connectivity and to constrain the pulverization of Si nanoparticles. Hence, it delivers great potential for application on wearable devices .

The effect of starch-g-poly(acrylamide) (S-g-PAM) molecular structure on sizing properties has been investigated. S-g-PAMs were synthesized with the catalysis of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) confirmed the acrylamide (AM) units had been successfully grafted on starch chains. Structural parameters, including degree of branching (DB), degree of substitution (DS) and grafting ratio (GR) were characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), and were correlated with sizing properties of apparent viscosity, adhesion to cotton yarns and film mechanical properties. The apparent viscosity of S-g-PAMs has no obvious correlation with DB and DS (or GR), as the amylose content of the native starch might have more influence on the viscosity of grafted starches. DS (or GR) values of grafted starches have a positive relationship with the tensile strength of sized cotton yarns and are negatively related with tensile strength of starch film. These results can provide guidance in the section of starch with improved sizing properties.

Solid-nanopores/nanopipettes have the exquisite ability to reveal the changes in molecular volume due to the advantages of adjustable size, good rigidity and low noise. Herein, a new platform for sensing application was established based on G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme (GQH) functionalized gold-coated nanopipettes. In this method, GQH was immobilized on gold-coated nanopipette, which could be used as a catalyst for the reaction of H 2 O 2 with 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) to promote the conversion of ABTS to ABTS + ions inside gold-coated nanopipette, and the change of transmembrane ion current could be monitored in real time. At the optimal conditions, there was a correlation between the ion current and the concentration of H 2 O 2 in a certain range, which could be used for the hydrogen peroxide sensing. The GQH immobilized nanopipette provides a useful platform to investigate enzymatic catalysis in confined environment, which can be used in electrocatalysis , sensing and fundamental electrochemistry .

g-C3N4-loaded carbon nanofibers (CNCNF) were obtained via electrostatic spinning and high temperature calcination. Highly crystalline g-C3N4 can be obtained at 800 °C due to the protection of carbon nanofibers. Benefiting from the high conductivity of carbon nanofibers and the high carrier separation efficiency of g-C3N4, CNCNF shows a significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production activity (7.7-fold more than pristine g-C3N4), also, the mechanism of photocatalytic performance enhancement is discussed.

In this work, monochlorophenols (MCPs) isomers degradation was investigated by Co-doped g-C 3 N 4 (CCN) using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as the oxidant. The effects of the doping amount of Co, the concentration of PMS, the loading of catalyst and initial pH of the solution on the catalyst activity were systematically studied. The results showed that MCPs could be degraded effectively by CCN/PMS system. The degradation reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetics. Sulfate radical (SO 4 − ) was found as the major active radicals in the degradation process. MCPs were degraded effectively with the degradation rate order of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) > 3-chlorophenol (3-CP) > 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). Except for the influence of structural characteristics of MCPs, this degradation rate order was also related to the adsorption behavior of CCN, which was based on the intermolecular interaction. Based on the analysis of the degradation products of MCPs, 1,4-benzoquinone or chlorinated 1,4-benzoquinone had been found to be the main intermediates.

Despite the increased interest of visible-light-absorbing compound Hypericin (Hyp) in photodiagnosis, photocatalysis, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications, a major obstacle still exists; i.e., the photoactivity is diminished due to the facile aggregation of Hyp in aqueous environment that induces excited-state quenching. Herein, we explore the excited-state property of Hyp bound to the DNA G-quadruplex by combining multiple steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. We find that the aggregation-induced quenching effect can be successfully prevented by appropriate G-quadruplex binders that disperse Hyp into monomer. The binding of Hyp/G-quadruplex is selective, however, exhibiting a preferential binding toward parallel G-quadruplexes (c-kit2, C14B1, STAT3, S50, and PS2.M), over antiparallel or hybrid G-quadruplex (Tel22, TBA). The excited-state property of Hyp is highly related to the binding behavior, showing a consistent trend that the better the Hyp/G-quadruplex binding, the longer the triplet 3Hyp* lifetime and the higher the efficiency to produce 1O2. For Hyp/c-kit2, the major binding mode is 5′-end stacking, which offers protection from collisional quenching reactions and ensures a stable photocycle of 3Hyp*-O2 energy transfer forming 1O2, leading to the highest 1O2 quantum yield (0.67) with superior photostability. These findings open possibilities of developing Hyp/G-quadruplex complex as a biocompatible photosensitizer for PDT applications, etc.

To address challenges in antibiotic wastewater treatment, we synthesized a series of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalysts (BCN, PCN, TCN, BTCN, and TCNE-modified PTCN) via defect engineering. TCNE modification disrupted the triazine ring-bridging amino network in PTCN, forming a porous structure with enhanced specific surface area validated by SEM/TEM while retaining the graphene-like framework confirmed by XRD/FTIR. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis revealed prolonged photogenerated carrier lifetime and improved separation efficiency in PTCN, achieving 89.10% degradation of chlortetracycline hydrochloride under visible light—1.65-fold higher than pristine g-C3N4. Mechanistic studies identified superoxide radicals (•O2−) as dominant active species, generated via O2activation at defect sites and efficient electron-hole utilization. Optimized conditions enabled PTCN to maintain high activity across a broad pH range and retain 82.59% efficiency after five cycles. This work advances defect-engineered photocatalyst design for adaptable, high-performance antibiotic degradation, offering practical insights for wastewater remediation.

Dextran graft poly((N-amidino)hexyl methacrylamide) (Dex-g-PAHMA) copolymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution and characterized. Dex-g-PAHMA copolymers can self-assemble into micelles with the PAHMA rich core and dextran rich shell in aqueous media. The CO2 sensitivity of the micelles was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), conductivity and zeta potential. The results confirmed that the Dex-g-PAHMA copolymer micelles have reversible CO2 sensitivity. The micelles can be used as doxorubicin (DOX) carriers and DOX molecules are mainly located in the core of the micelles. The MTT assay indicated that the Dex-g-PAHMA graft copolymers are non-toxic to cells in the copolymer concentration range of 5–1000 μg mL−1, whereas the relative cell viability is greatly reduced with the increase of copolymer concentration for DOX-loaded micelles. The DOX-loaded micelles can be endocytosed by MCF-7 cells and the DOX can release from micelles and diffuse into the cell nucleus. The Dex-g-PAHMA copolymers have promising applications as drug carriers for cancer therapy.
