Considering that pesticide residues cause significant harm to health and the environment, it is crucial and urgent to fabricate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high sensitivity to detect pesticide residues. In this study, a three-layer structure of multifunctional Fe3O4/GO/Ag nanoparticles (NPs) as an active substrate for SERS was fabricated and comprehensively characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), elemental mapping, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The active substrate was used to detect thiram pesticide through SERS. Combined with the synergistic effect, Ag NPs and graphene oxide (GO) possessed high-density and ordered hot spots to enhance the electromagnetic field; therefore, signal amplification and fascinating sensitivity were achieved. The lowest concentration of thiram for clear presentation of the peak was 10−12 mol L−1. There was a satisfactory linear relationship, ranging from 10−10 to 10−4 mol L−1, with a low limit of detection, high sensitivity, satisfactory enhancement factor (EF), stability, and repeatability. In addition, Fe3O4/GO/Ag was successfully applied to identify pesticide residues in a practical sample. Furthermore, the enhancement mechanism, including electromagnetic enhancement and chemical reinforcement, is discussed in detail. Fe3O4/GO/Ag is a potential active substrate for SERS and can be applied for rapid detection in the food industry, environmental fields and biomedicine with fascinating sensitivity.

Hydrogels, owing to their outstanding hydrophilicity and remarkable ability to mitigate creep and leakage issues, serve as ideal lubricants. The introduction of nanomaterials such as MXene and graphene oxide (GO) can further enhance the mechanical strength and tribological properties of hydrogels. In this study, MXene/GO-PVA composite hydrogel lubricants were prepared by incorporating the two nanomaterials of MXene and GO into the PVA hydrogel by the chemical cross-linking method, and their tribological properties were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the lubrication mechanism of the MXene/GO-PVA hydrogel was investigated and deduced through multiple analytical techniques. Compared with the base hydrogel and single-component hydrogel, the MXene/GO-PVA hydrogel exhibits the best tribological performance: its coefficient of friction is reduced by 50.68%, and its wear volume is decreased by 63.99% relative to the PVA hydrogel. The inherent low interlayer shear strength and interlayer slip characteristics of MXene and GO, combined with their surface-abundant hydrophilic groups and the synergistic effects generated within the three-dimensional PVA hydrogel network, collectively contribute to the excellent lubrication performance. This study offers insights into the development of high-performance water-based lubricants.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are being intensively explored as filler materials for polymeric proton exchange membranes (PEMs) due to their potentials for the systematic design and modification of proton-conducting properties. S-UiO-66, a stable MOF with functional groups of −SO3H in its ligands, was selected here to prepare S-UiO-66@graphene oxide (GO) hybrid nanosheets via a facile in situ growth procedure, and then a series of composite PEMs were prepared by hybridizing S-UiO-66@GO and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). The resultant hybrid nanosheets not only possessed abundant −SO3H groups derived from the ligands of S-UiO-66 but also yielded a uniform dispersion of S-UiO-66 onto GO nanosheets, thus effectively eliminating the agglomeration of S-UiO-66 in the membrane matrix. Thanks to the well-tailored chemical composition and nanostructure of S-UiO-66@GO, the as-prepared SPEEK/S-UiO-66@GO composite PEMs present a significant increase in their proton conductivity under various conditions. In particular, the proton conductivity of the SPEEK/S-UiO-66@GO-10 membrane was up to 0.268 S·cm–1 and 16.57 mS·cm–1 at 70 °C-95% RH and 100 °C-40% RH (2.6 and 6.0 times that of recast SPEEK under the same condition), respectively. Moreover, the mechanical property of composite membranes was substantially strengthened and the methanol penetration was well-suppressed. Our investigation indicates the great potential of S-UiO-66@GO in fabricating composite PEMs and also reveals that the high proton conductivity of MOFs can be fully utilized by means of MOF/polymer composite membranes.

Highlights What are the main findings? A green acid-free route produces MIL-101/GO-0.1, enabling superior C 3 F 8 capture. The content of graphene oxide affects the adsorption properties of the composite material. MIL-101/GO-0.1 achieved a record-breaking IAST separation selectivity of 17,069 for C 3 F 8 /N 2 . What are the implications of the main findings? Overcome the current technical bottleneck of low C 3 F 8 adsorption capacity. Green synthesis coupled with high adsorption capacity opens up possibilities for industrial applications. This provides insights for future research into the adsorption and separation of C 3 F 8 . As a perfluorinated compound with a high global warming potential, octafluoropropane (C 3 F 8 ) needs to be efficiently separated from industrial waste gas, but separating it from nitrogen at low concentrations is highly challenging. To address the common drawback of using corrosive acids in conventional MIL-101(Cr) synthesis, this study developed a green, acid-free solvothermal method for preparing graphene oxide (GO)-modified MIL-101(Cr) composites (MIL-101/GO). By systematically varying the GO doping, the optimal composite (MIL-101/GO-0.1) exhibited breakthrough adsorption performance: its equilibrium adsorption capacity for C 3 F 8 reached 210 mg/g in fixed-bed breakthrough experiments. The predicted C 3 F 8 adsorption selectivity relative to N 2 reached 17,069, ranking among the highest values reported for adsorbents, indicating a significant performance enhancement over the pristine MIL-101(Cr). Mechanistic analysis reveals that graphene oxide not only increases specific surface area and micropore volume but also enhances dispersion forces, substantially boosting affinity for C 3 F 8 . Additionally, the composite exhibits outstanding cycling stability and thermal stability. This study provides a novel eco-friendly synthetic strategy for high-performance metal–organic frameworks and offers a highly promising candidate material for industrial-scale fluorocarbon recovery.

Mimicking the efficient facilitated transport features of carrier proteins in cytomembranes, constructing facilitated transport pathways in synthetic membranes to achieve the desired performance for task-specific molecules has become attractive. Herein, heterostructured laminates (UGO) were created through in-situ growth of amine-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (UiO) on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, and subsequently used as supports to immobilize Ag + . The as-prepared Ag + @UGO were incorporated into poly (ether-block-amide) (Pebax) matrix to fabricate facilitated transport membranes for pervaporative desulfurization. Densely packed UiO on GO nanosheets increase the inter-particles connectivity of the molecular transport channels and reduce the mass transport resistance, intensifying the permeability. Meanwhile, the uniform immobilization of Ag + can reversibly interact with thiophene via π-complexation reaction and form continuous facilitated transport pathways, significantly enhancing the selectivity. Accordingly, the resultant membrane acquires separation performance with an optimum permeation flux of 23.40 kg/(m 2 h) and enrichment factor of 7.12, achieving 52% and 57% higher than the pristine membrane. This study extends strategies to design high-performance hybrid membranes with facilitated transport mechanism through the well-designed heterostructures as supports to immobilize carriers for molecular separations.

The limitations of hydrophilicity, strength, antibacterial activity adsorption performance of the biobased and biocompatible polymer materials, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), significantly restrict their wider applications especially in medical areas. In this paper, a novel composite membrane with high antibacterial activity and platelet adsorption performance was prepared based on graphene oxide (GO), MXene and 3-hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV), which are medium-chain-length-copolymers of PHA. The GO/MXene nanosheets can uniformly inset on the surface of PHBV fibre and give the PHBV—GO/MXene composite membranes superior hydrophilicity due to the presence of hydroxyl groups and terminal oxygen on the surface of nanosheets, which further provides the functional site for the free radical polymerization of ester bonds between GO/MXene and PHBV. As a result, the tensile strength, platelet adsorption, and blood coagulation time of the PHBV—GO/MXene composite membranes were remarkably increased compared with those of the pure PHBV membranes. The antibacterial rate of the PHBV—GO/MXene composite membranes against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria can reach 97% due to the antibacterial nature of MXene. The improved strength, hydrophilicity, antibacterial activity and platelet adsorption performance suggest that PHBV—GO/MXene composite membranes might be ideal candidates for multifunctional materials for haemostatic applications.

The accumulation of uremic toxins in blood might induce chronic renal failure (CRF). The incidence of CRF was as high as 10%. The traditional therapy for CRF was hemodialysis, which was more effective to remove small molecules, such as urea and creatinine. However, this detoxification method ignored the tissue functional adaption due to the retention of macromolecule uremic toxins. To solve this problem, this paper developed a new kind of chitosan/carboxyl graphite oxide (CS/GO-COOH) scaffold via a double-lyophilization method. Then, this synthetic scaffold was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, hydrophilic test, mechanical property, and in vitro detoxification test. Covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding were formed, indicating the strong interactions between CS and GO-COOH. There were interconnected networks in the synthesized scaffold. The mechanical test suggested that the GO-2500 scaffold had excellent mechanical strength, which was 7.41 ± 0.82 MPa with 25% shrink. What is more, GO-2500 could totally rebound within 1s, after compressed to 90% shrink. The rates of GO-2500 were 1587 ± 60 and 246 ± 10% according to the water uptake and retention data, respectively. Furthermore, the detoxification of GO-2500 to urea, creatinine, VB12, and β2-m were 67.59 ± 2.31, 39.67 ± 2.95, 31.51 ± 2.62, and 83.82 ± 7.76 mg/g, respectively. The resulting CS/GO-COOH scaffold held great potential for the detoxification of uremic toxins.

In this study, we prepare a polyethyleneimine (PEI) and graphene oxide (GO) composite adsorbent through an amidation reaction between the amine groups of the PEI and the carboxyl groups of the GO. Adsorption performance of the PEI–GO was tested by removing Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solution. The physico-chemical properties of the GO, pristine and Cr(VI) ions-loaded PEI–GO were investigated by FT-IR, SEM-EDX and XPS methods. To investigate the adsorption kinetics of Cr(VI) ions onto this newly developed PEI–GO, we performed a batch of experiments under different adsorption conditions: content of the PEI in the PEI–GO, solution pH, initial Cr(VI) ion concentration, adsorption temperature and contact time. The prepared PEI–GO exhibited an encouraging uptake capacity of 539.53 mg g−1. The adsorption process was fast, within the first 1 h, Cr(VI) ion adsorption onto the PEI–GO was about 71%, and the adsorption equilibrium could be obtained within 14 h. Kinetics experiments indicated that the adsorption process could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, our adsorption equilibrium data fit the Langmuir isotherms well (R2 > 0.99). The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) ions from the solution consists of two steps: (1) Cr(VI) ions bind to the 4PEI–GO composite by electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged Cr(VI) ion species and the protonated amine groups of the 4PEI–GO; and (2) a few Cr(VI) ions were reduced to Cr(III) ions with the assistance of π electrons on the carbocyclic six-membered ring of the 4PEI–GO and then bind on the 4PEI–GO by the electrostatic attraction between Cr(III) ions and negatively charged groups (COO−) of the 4PEI–GO. Based on the results obtained in this work, it can be concluded that the prepared PEI–GO can be an effective and potential adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions from an aqueous solution.

Membrane separation has emerged as a competitive energy-efficient approach for carbon capture and flue gas treatment. Membrane materials and structures are the core of gas separation membranes, which collectively govern gas molecular mass transfer and separation behaviors. Two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) porous nanosheets hold great promise for gas separation due to their nanoscale thickness and structural tunability, but they are often limited by low permeability. Herein, we propose a supramolecular strategy to fabricate ZIF-L/GO/Pebax mixed matrix membranes with intercalated network architectures for efficient CO 2 /N 2 separation. Leaf-like ZIF-L expands the interlayer spacing of GO nanosheets and constructs high-speed continuous gas transport pathways within the membrane. This unique intercalated structure provides abundant CO 2 -philic sites, significantly enhancing CO 2 solubility and enabling highly selective gas molecular sieving. Moreover, hydrogen bonds and chelation coordination interactions between ZIF-L/GO and polymer matrix ensure excellent interfacial compatibility while reinforcing structural stability. This supramolecular structural engineering approach effectively mitigates the limitations of traditional membranes, achieving CO 2 permeability of 1000.8 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 45, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bound and approaching the 2019 limit. Additionally, the membrane displays superior mechanical properties and long-term operational stability, providing a promising avenue toward high-performance materials for efficient CO 2 capture.

PAMD strategy stabilizes Ni nanoparticles on graphene oxide supports. • Ni–GO shows superparamagnetism for facile magnetic separation and reuse. • 95% 4-NP conversion in 2 min with first-order rate constant 3.02 × 10 −2 s −1 . • Continuous-flow reactor runs 12 h at 5 mL min −1 keeping >90% conversion. • Catalyst retains 90% activity after 2100 cycles with stable structure. A polymer-assisted metal deposition strategy is developed to fabricate nickel loaded graphene oxide (Ni-GO) composites with enhanced catalytic stability. GO is first functionalized via silane coupling and surface polymerization, creating effective anchoring sites for uniform Ni nanoparticle deposition. The resulting Ni-GO composite exhibits superparamagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 6.75 emu g −1 , enabling rapid magnetic recovery. In batch reduction of 4-nitrophenol, the catalyst achieves over 95% conversion within 2 min and follows first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 3.02 × 10 −2 s −1 at 30 mg catalyst dosage. A continuous-flow reactor packed with Ni-GO maintains >90% conversion for 12 h at 5.0 mL min −1 . Scale-up configurations including series and parallel assemblies demonstrate stable performance up to 50 mL min −1 . The composite also effectively degrades methyl orange, rhodamine B and methylene blue, and hydrogenates various nitroaromatic compounds with >80% conversion. After 2100 catalytic cycles, the material retains 90% efficiency with negligible structural change. This work offers a practical route to stable non-noble metal catalysts for continuous pollutant treatment. A polymer-assisted metal deposition method anchors Ni nanoparticles on functionalized GO, yielding a magnetic catalyst that reduces 4-nitrophenol in 2 min, sustains >90% conversion for 12 h in continuous flow, and retains 90% activity after 2100 cycles. This work engineered an innovative cellulose nanofibrils aerogel-immobilized graphene oxide (GO)/magnesium–aluminum layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanostructure (LDGC) for the effective simultaneous sequestration of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solution. The composite was synthesized through a facile physical encapsulation method, combining the high porosity of cellulose nanofiber (CNF) aerogels with the multifunctional adsorption sites of GO@LDH. Structural analysis demonstrated that LDGC possessed a markedly increased specific surface area (43.78 m 2 ·g −1 ) relative to its constituent materials, coupled with a high density of oxygen-functionalized moieties conducive to heavy metal coordination. Batch adsorption studies revealed outstanding simultaneous removal performance (85 mg·g −1 for Cu(II) and 88 mg·g −1 for Cr(VI) in binary-component systems), representing 318% and 161% improvement compared to single-ion conditions, respectively. Kinetic analyses aligned with the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 > 0.99), suggesting predominant chemisorption mechanisms. The composite maintained > 93% efficiency after 4 regeneration cycles and showed strong resistance to common interfering ions (Ca 2 ⁺/SO 4 2 ⁻ increased adsorption by 92–105%). This work provides a sustainable strategy for simultaneous heavy metal removal, addressing critical challenges in wastewater treatment through rational design of multifunctional nanocomposites.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in water poses a serious environmental and health threat. GO composites exhibit significant potential as adsorbents for the removal of Cd2+ owing to their large surface area. However, their adsorption performances such as capacity, reusability, and selectivity can be further improved through rational functionalization. A novel RF-GO composite was fabricated through a facile covalent coupling method. The Cd2+ ion adsorption performance of the RF-GO composite was studied through batch adsorption experiments, and process parameter optimization including initial pH, temperature and contact time. The composite's structural morphology, surface functional groups, pore features, and thermal stability were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), specific surface area analysis (SSA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The RF-GO composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity of 39.58 mg g−1 for Cd2+ at pH = 8. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.995), demonstrating a chemisorption-dominated process. Equilibrium data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.97), suggesting the monolayer adsorption onto uniform active sites. Thermodynamic studies confirmed the endothermic and non-spontaneous nature of adsorption. Notably, the composite exhibited excellent reusability and structural stability, highlighting its potential as a sustainable and selective solution for Cd2+ removal from wastewater.
