Aluminum hydride (AlH3) features a theoretical hydrogen content of 10.1 wt%, with initial hydrogen desorption temperatures generally ranging from 150 to 200 °C. However, its metastability makes it complicated to achieve low hydrogen desorption temperatures alongside high desorption capacities, which has limited its practical application. This study aims to improve the hydrogen desorption performance of AlH3by incorporating different MXenes (V2C, Nb2C, Ti3C2, Ti3CN) accompanied by ball milling condition and catalyst content optimizations. It was shown that AlH3catalyzed with 1 wt% Nb2C, ball milled at 300 rpm for 180 min under an argon atmosphere, exhibits the best performance, achieving an initial hydrogen desorption temperature of 95 °C and a final hydrogen desorption content of 9.3 wt%. It was further demonstrated that Nb2C MXene mainly acts as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogen desorption process of AlH3and can extend the Al–H bonds of AlH3in local interphase regions observed by means of theoretical calculation, thus enhancing the hydrogen desorption performance of AlH3. This work proposes a method to achieve high-capacity and low-temperature hydrogen desorption from metastable AlH3through proper ball milling and the introduction of MXenes.

Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is an important technique that is widely adopted in the petroleum industry to remove harmful sulfur compounds for environmental protection. MoS2 is the most commonly employed HDS catalyst but tends to stack due to its high surface energy. Active MoS2 nanosheets are anticipated to be well supported for preventing aggregation and increasing accessibility. In the current study, two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene is utilized as a novel support to controllably anchor MoS2 nanosheets for efficient HDS. The composite of Ti3C2-supported CoMoS2 (CoMoS2/Ti3C2) with a 3D interconnected network was successfully constructed by a facile, one-step hydrothermal method. Detailed characterizations showed that MoS2 nanosheets vertically grew in situ on and between the layers of Ti3C2 MXene. CoMoS2/Ti3C2 possesses a well-defined open structure with a larger specific surface area and a higher proportion of CoMoS active phase compared with unsupported CoMoS2. As catalyzed by CoMoS2/Ti3C2, the reaction rate constant was effectively increased to 2.8 times that on CoMoS2 for the HDS of dibenzothiophene. CoMoS2/Ti3C2 also showed good stability in a harsh high-temperature reaction environment.

The development of highly sensitive and selective gas sensors for detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is imperative for environmental monitoring and industrial safety. Herein, we report a novel multi-dimensional heterostructure, 1D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanofibers were derived from 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) through alkaline treatment, then integrated with 0D ZnO nanoparticles for high-performance NO 2 sensing. The unique architecture synergistically combines the high carrier mobility and abundant surface functional terminals of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) with tunable semiconducting characteristics of ZnO. Benefiting from enhanced charge transfer at the heterointerfaces and maximized active sites, optimized sensor demonstrates exceptional responses to NO 2 at room temperature, realizing a substantial response value of 64.58% towards 50 ppm NO 2 , significantly surpassing pristine MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Notably, the multi-dimensional composite exhibits an ultra-low limit of detection of 25.14 ppb for NO 2 , which meets the requirements for ppb-level detection. Additionally, the response of sensor to NO 2 (64.58%) significantly exceeds that to other interfering gases at equivalent concentrations, such as NH 3 (0.7%) and trimethylamine (7.3%). Furthermore, during long-term stability testing, the response to NO 2 at equivalent concentrations exhibited only a 4.7% decay over approximately 30 days. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the binding energy of this multi-dimensional structure for NO 2 is 0.5 eV, significantly higher than that for other gas species. Theoretical simulations reveal that improved performance originates from strengthened NO 2 adsorption energy and modulated electron depletion layers at hybrid interface. This work provides viable solution for fabricating advanced gas sensors through multi-dimensional material engineering, demonstrating great potential in real-time air quality analysis.

To meet the demand for high-sensitivity ammonia (NH 3 ) detection at room temperature, this study develops an ultra-sensitive gas sensor by integrating the exceptional sensing properties of 2D MXene with the evanescent field advantages of optical microfibers. A carboxylated MXene-functionalized microfiber sensor was designed and fabricated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that carboxylation significantly enhances the adsorption energy between the MXene surface and NH 3 molecules compared to pristine MXene, theoretically validating its superior sensitivity. Experimentally, a uniform and robust carboxylated MXene thin film was coated onto the microfiber, demonstrating excellent mechanical stability for practical sensing. Gas sensing tests show a strong linear response within the 10–250 ppm range. Notably, the sensitivity is an order of magnitude higher than previously reported microfiber sensors, with a practical detection limit of 10 ppm and a theoretical limit as low as 6.90 ppm. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits excellent long-term stability over a 10-day measurement and gas selectivity. This research provides a new strategy for developing high-performance room-temperature gas sensors with significant potential for environmental atmospheric monitoring.

2D material films, such as MXene and graphene, featuring with robust mechanical properties and outstanding physicochemical properties, have attracted significant attention in varying fields. However, the current fabrication methodologies of 2D material films suffer from poor controllability, inefficient processing, elaborate equipment, or limited film scale and uniformity. A route which is free of fabrication equipment and energy supply while enables high-quality and programmable films is urgently needed yet unavailable to date. Herein, solar irradiation (SI) is proposed as an emerging route to develop large-area MXene or graphene oxide (GO) films with programmable structures, by means of their intrinsic light-to-heat conversion capability. The findings include: (i) under SI, photothermal-induced Marangoni effect leads to oriented flow fields, making nanosheets highly aligned and thereafter compact films. Mechanical strength and electrical conductivity of the films are enhanced by 259% and 75%, respectively, compared to ones fabricated via widespread vacuum-assisted filtration; (ii) impressively, MXene/GO lateral and vertical heterostructures with programmable 2D patterns and 3D shapes have been developed via this SI route, offering a versatile and flexible design strategy; and (iii) this emerging SI route makes 40-inch films at ambient temperature and pressure, without any external energy supply or devices. Nerve
guidance conduits play a critical role in bridging nerve
gaps and facilitating neural repair. Recent advances highlight that
structural optimization and functional enhancement can further enhance
the regenerative outcomes. Herein, inspired by the structural features
of celery stalks and native nerves, we propose a biomimetic multichannel
three-dimensional (3D) MXene nanofiber sponge scaffold for reconstructing
large-gap peripheral nerve defects. The scaffold integrates MXene-loaded
sacrificial alginate microfibers, a gas-foamed 3D porous nanofiber
sponge, and a gelatin methacryloyl hydrogel encapsulating neurotrophic
and angiogenic factors. The biomimetic multichannel structure was
obtained by sacrificing the alginate microfibers, during which MXene
nanosheets were released and deposited onto the channels. Benefiting
from the conductive microchannels, the 3D sponge network, and the
bioactive hydrogel, the scaffold potently induced the differentiation
of rat pheochromocytoma cells and supported endothelial tube formation.
Moreover, the scaffold significantly enhanced nerve regeneration and
functional motor recovery in rat long-gap nerve defect models. These
findings demonstrate a potential strategy for the regeneration of
peripheral nerve defects.

Advances in ultra-sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates and SERS enhancement strategies are the two fundamental pillars for the development of SERS technology. However, broadly applicable strategies that reproducibly achieve order-of-magnitude improvements in SERS sensitivity remain scarce. Herein, we propose an electric-field modulation strategy to simultaneously stimulate photo-electric-induced charge transfer (PEICT) and surface-plasmon enhancement (PESP). This strategy increases the density of states near the E F and induces an upward shift of E F , thereby lowering inter-band transition barriers and promoting surface electron localization. Guided by this strategy, a series of bimetallic MXene SERS-active substrates are theoretically predicted and experimentally reported for the first time. Under cooperative excitation with a 532-nm laser and a 300-V field, Ti 2 TaC 2 achieves a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 −13 M and a SERS performance factor (SPF) of 2.3 × 10 5 , a three-orders-of-magnitude gain over laser-only excitation. This strategy provides a broadly applicable route to substantially enhance SERS sensitivity in non-metallic substrates.

MXenes are promising sorbents for heavy metal removal, yet their performance is often limited by surface oxidation. In this work, we engineered MXene membranes with tunable oxygen content via controlled etching to enhance redox activity and Cu 2+ adsorption. The optimized membrane retains a high density of exposed Ti active sites, facilitating interfacial electron transfer. Consequently, it achieves a superior maximum adsorption capacity of 593.66 mg/g, outperforming most reported MXene-based materials. Isotherm and kinetic modeling indicate a chemisorption-controlled, monolayer adsorption process (Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models). XPS analyses and DFT calculations confirm a redox-mediated pathway involving Cu 2+ reduction and Ti oxidation. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits excellent selectivity for Cu 2+ over competing ions (Pb²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe²⁺, etc.) and maintains high efficiency across diverse pH and temperature conditions. These findings demonstrate that modulating oxygen content and Ti-site exposure is a scalable strategy for optimizing MXene-based water remediation.

Intercalation-type niobium-based oxides offer considerable promise as lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes due to their safe operating voltages and structural robustness. However, their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and sluggish ion transport impede practical deployment. Herein, we report a CoNb 2 O 6 @MXene/carbon nanofibers (CoNb 2 O 6 @MXene/CNFs) composite fabricated via electrospinning and controlled annealing. By embedding CoNb 2 O 6 nanoparticles and highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets within a flexible carbon nanofiber framework, this hierarchical architecture establishes efficient multi-dimensional electron/ion transport pathways. The excellent electrical conductivity of MXene enhances the charge transfer kinetics, while the carbon nanofiber matrix prevents particle aggregation and buffers volume expansion. Consequently, the optimized electrode achieves a high initial discharge capacity of 762.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , maintaining 378.6 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles.

The methanol oxidation reaction is a critical half-reaction in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), but its efficiency is limited by the low activity and poor stability of traditional electrocatalysts. This study reports the development of a high-performance PtCo/Mo 2 CT x catalyst for methanol oxidation in DMFCs. Synthesized by depositing PtCo alloy nanoparticles on Mo 2 CT x sheets prepared via cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-assisted etching of Mo 2 Ga 2 C, the PtCo/Mo 2 CT x catalyst achieved enhanced interlayer spacing and excellent dispersion of active sites. The optimized PtCo/Mo 2 CT x catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic activity, reaching a mass activity of 2296 mA·mg Pt −1 —6.5 times that of commercial Pt/C. Electrochemical studies confirmed the catalyst’s low charge transfer resistance, high electrochemical surface area, and strong CO anti-poisoning ability. Stability tests showed that the catalyst retained 62.26% activity after 1000 cycles. These improvements are attributed to the synergistic effects between Pt and Co, the conductive and layered structure of Mo 2 CT x , making PtCo/Mo 2 CT x a promising, durable anode material for DMFCs in sustainable energy applications. Carbon dioxide is one of the typical gases of a lithium battery thermal runaway. In this paper, lanthanum cobaltate (LaCoO3) nanospheres were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis route, sheet structure MXene nanomaterials were prepared by lithium fluoride (LiF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) etching aluminum titanium-carbide (Ti3AlC2), and a CO2 sensor assembled by a LaCoO3/MXene nanocomposite was successfully constructed. The nanocomposite was observed and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS, and the gas sensitivity of the composite sensitive material and the single sensitive material to CO2 was systematically compared. The results show that the response of a LaCoO3/MXene nanocomposite sensor to 800 ppm of CO2 reaches 50.47% at the optimum operating temperature of 60 °C, which is 2.94 times higher than that of a pristine LaCoO3 sensor (17.16%). In addition, the LaCoO3/MXene sensors demonstrate low detection limits (50 ppm), short response/recovery times (14/32 s@ 800 ppm), and good long-term stability. The gas sensing properties of the composite may be due to the Schottky heterojunction formed between the LaCoO3 nanospheres and MXene. The results indicate that LaCoO3/MXene nanocomposites are potential CO2 sensing materials at low operating temperatures.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene holds great promise as an electrode material for electrochemical energy storage, but its practical application is often limited by the restacking of nanosheets, which impedes ion accessibility and rate capability. Herein, a simple in-situ carbonization strategy using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is developed to fabricate MXene/C composite electrodes. During pyrolysis, PAN transforms into N-doped amorphous carbon, which not only spacers and bridges adjacent Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene lamellae but also introduces porosity, thereby enlarging the interlayer spacing and forming a permeable mesoporous network while maintaining efficient electron transport. Electrochemical evaluation identifies 600 °C as the optimal carbonization temperature, leading to surface-capacitive-dominated charge storage with enhanced ion diffusion kinetics. By optimizing the composition, the composite with 20 wt% PAN achieves a specific capacitance of 237.75 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 , along with significantly improved rate performance and cycling stability compared to the pristine MXene electrode. This polymer-derived carbon intercalation approach offers a straightforward and effective route for tailoring the MXene interlayer structure, facilitating the rational design of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.
