Facile synthesis of hierarchical polycystic iron-nitride/phosphide hybrids microsphere constructed by CNTs for stable and enhanced lithium storage

Peng Jing,Qiong Wang,Boya Wang,Mingwu Xiang,Hongjun Jiang,Yin Zhang,Yunhong Wei,Yun Zhang,Hao Wu,Heng Liu

Diverse Fe-based nitrides and phosphides have drawn considerable attention owing to their abundant source, high theoretical capacities, and environment benignity. However, it still remains a crucial challenge to develop a facile preparation approach of robust Fe-based anode materials for the next-generation durable lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we constructed two type polycystic microsphere anode materials (Fe 2 N@C/CNTs and FeP@C/CNTs) through a scalable industrial spray-drying technology combined with following chemical nitridation/phosphorization conversion strategy. Both the resultant Fe 2 N@C/CNTs and FeP@C/CNTs materials exhibit unique hierarchical polycystic microsphere structure and improved conductive network caused by the incorporation of amorphous carbon and dense CNTs coating layers. The unique structure merits endow these capabilities of facilitating electrons/ions transport and accommodating notorious volume change during charge-discharge cycling. Consequently, the Fe 2 N@C/CNTs and FeP@C/CNTs anode materials deliver enhanced rate capability (216 and 232 mA h g −1 , respectively, at a high current density of 5 A g −1 ) and durable cycling stability with reversible capacities of 489 and 571 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 500 cycles, respectively. In addition, this work also provides a transplantable preparation strategy for other conversion-type anode materials with poor electrical conductivity and large volume effect.

Simple preparation of UiO-66-NH2-modified microsphere layer/nanofibrous membrane by coaxial spinning for purification of complex wastewater

Shuting Tian,Yang Bai,Shuangshuang Li,Zuoming Chen,Liyun Zhang,Hongjie Li,Peng Zhou,Yi He

Microsphere layers/nanofibrous membranes decorated with UiO-66-NH 2 as a metal-organic framework (MOF) were successfully obtained by one-step coaxial electrospinning. The coaxially spun dense microsphere/wire-like structure and UiO-66-NH 2 hydrophilic components with excellent hydration ability enabled the prepared membrane to have excellent static and dynamic adsorption capacity for dyes and oil-in-water emulsion separation performance (adsorption capacity >247 mg/g; separation efficiency >99%). What's more, the membrane can purify complex wastewater dynamically and efficiently (separation efficiency >99%). After the membrane was desorbed in ethanol and methanol, the reversible recovery rate was as high as 98%, indicating its excellent recyclability. In a word, the as-prepared membrane has broad prospects in the remediation of complex polluted water bodies containing dyes-oil.

Sensitive and handy detection of pesticide residue on fruit surface based on single microsphere surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique

Yiting Feng,Xiuli Wang,Yinghao Chang,Jia Guo,Changchun Wang

Hypothesis: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become an emerging and reliable tool for detecting pesticide residues due to its high sensitivity, fast testing speed and easy sample handling. SERS active substrates are the key to achieve efficient and sensitive detection. However, for the most widely used noble metal nanoparticles, there are problems of high noble metal nanoparticle usage and random aggregation. The micron-scale Raman spot is focused on multiple randomly aggregated nanoparticles during the test, resulting in poor reproducibility. Therefore, the development of micron-scale cost-effective SERS substrates with good reproducibility and simple detecting method is of great significance in practical detection. Experiments: Through deposition of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) by chemical reduction on the surface of monodisperse sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres, micron-sized PS@Ag-NPs core–shell microspheres were prepared with excellent SERS activity. After that, two simple protocols (Method I and Method II) were explored for the determination of thiram on apple epidermis. Findings: Based on our developed strategy of the single microsphere SERS technique, we successfully fabricated uniform PS@Ag-NPs substrate with high SERS activity and excellent detection sensitivity. The single microsphere SERS technique possesses the capability of anti-dilutability and the utilization of ultra-low PS@Ag-NPs microsphere dosage, realizing qualitative and quantitative detection of thiram on apple with detection limits far below the standard stipulated by China and the European Union.

A highly sensitive and reproducible multiplex mycotoxin SERS array based on AuNPs-loaded inverse opal silica photonic crystal microsphere

Saisai Jiao,Jie Liu,Jialong Sun,Yunwei Chang,Siwei Wang,Shijie Dai,Ruimin Xu,Menghua Dou,Qianjin Li,Jing Wang,Jianlin Li

A highly sensitive and reproducible multiplex mycotoxin SERS array has been established based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-loaded inverse opal silica photonic crystal microsphere (SIPCM). Three types of Raman nanotags were synthesized by covalently grafting different antibodies and non-covalently loading different organic dyes onto the AuNPs for coding corresponding mycotoxins. To enhance Raman signal, AuNPs were loaded on the surface of SIPCM to create hot-spots once the Raman nanotags came closely. The maximal electric field enhancing effect in SIPCM with AuNP dimer could reach to 8 times. The assay principle was based on the competition immunoassay between the mycotoxins in sample and the artificial antigens immobilized on the surface of SIPCM. The three Raman nanotags could be integrated into an array to qualitatively and quantitatively detect multiplex mycotoxins in a sample. Such SERS-based assay displayed wide linear detection ranges of 0.001–10 ng/mL for ochratoxin A (OTA), 0.001–10 ng/mL for fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ), and 0.1–1000 ng/mL for deoxynivalenol (DON), and low limits of detection (LOD) of 2.46 pg/mL for OTA, 0.20 pg/mL for FB 1 , and 68.98 pg/mL for DON. The recovery rates of the new method were measured to be 77.68–104.69% for OTA, 76.39–117.73% for FB 1 , and 70.95–113.16% for DON, in agreement with that of the classical ELISA method. The SERS-based method shows obvious advantages over fluorescence label or enzyme catalytic chemiluminescence methods , having a great application potential in rapidly screening multiplex mycotoxins in real samples.

Insight into the synergistic adsorption-reduction character of chromium(VI) onto poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylene pentamine) microsphere in synthetic wastewater

Yan Zhang,Qiang Liu,Wei Ma,Hanxiao Liu,Jingwen Zhu,Likai Wang,Hongchang Pei,Qinze Liu,Jinshui Yao

Facile fabrication of the ultra-high-performance adsorbent can effectively ameliorate the Cr(VI)-pollution elimination in sewage control. Herein, a simple synthesis strategy is proposed to tap a versatile chelating resin poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylene pentamine) (PPTA) with respect to Cr(VI) removal from solution. Multiple changing factors which affect the adsorption behavior of PPTA are explored sequentially, such as initial pH, adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, foreign ions, etc . The microstructure and functional mechanism of synthetic adsorbent are investigated systematically by means of various characterizations including TEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS, etc . Consequently, the as-prepared PPTA-3 microsphere by reactant ratio of 1: 1 represents a brilliant synergistic adsorption and reduction result for Cr(VI) by the drastic electrostatic interaction of –NH 3 + and –OH 2 + groups, including satisfactory removal efficiency which closes to 100 % in low concentration, favorable specificity for the influence from coexistent ions (Mo(VI), Mn(VII), Cl - , Cr(III), etc ), and passable recyclability. Following the surpassingly fitting with Langmuir isotherm model, its maximum capacity reaches 714.29 mg g −1 at 30 °C. The removal performance is essentially in agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetics, simultaneously, suffers the rate-limiting impact depending on intra-particle diffusion process. In brief, this newly developed chelating resin presents an effective means with regard to the Cr(VI)-wastewater treatment or other uses in the future.

The preparation and displacement performances of a hollow structure microsphere with swelling–deswelling properties for enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

Cao Mengjing,Cai Qiang,Guo Guangfan,Guo Hong,Chen Yingchao,Zhang Yuping

Polymer microsphere profile control is a promising approach for the profile control of heterogeneous reservoirs. Matching between polymer microspheres after swelling in water and the reservoir pore throat is crucial for profile control. Hydration equilibrium time and swelling ratio are key properties that are a direct result of water shutoff efficacy. In this paper, a hollow structure microsphere with swelling–deswelling properties is synthesized and its physical properties including morphology, particle size distribution, water swelling property and deswelling property are thoroughly examined. Meanwhile, the displacement performances are studied. The results demonstrate that the hollow structure microspheres have good swelling–deswelling properties at different salt concentrations. Compared with two kinds of polymer microspheres with the same material, the hydration equilibrium time of hollow structure microspheres is longer than that of nonhollow polymer microspheres. Moreover, the hollow structure microspheres have an effect on deep plugging. With the hydration time increasing, the tertiary recovery of the hollow structure microspheres solution is higher than that of nonhollow polymer microspheres solution, whether in a homogeneous medium or in a heterogeneous medium.

Preparation and performance of porous hydroxyapatite/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) drug-loaded microsphere scaffolds for gentamicin sulfate delivery

Cao Xing,Dai Lingjun,Sun Shichang,Ma Rui,Liu Xiangli

The prevention/treatment of osteomyelitis infection by combining the local antibiotic delivery system with the bone regeneration scaffold can effectively overcome the drawbacks of systemic antibiotic administration and realize the full cycle control of drug release. Herein, by introducing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) cross-linking agent to improve the binding force of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres and porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) bone scaffold. The porous HAp/PLGA drug-loaded microsphere bone scaffold for gentamicin sulfate (GS) delivery was successfully prepared. The optimal preparation parameters, drug release characteristics, SCMC enhancement mechanism, antibacterial properties and bone cell activity of porous HAp/PLGA drug-loaded microsphere bone scaffolds were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the 0.1% SCMC-modified porous HAp/PLGA drug-loaded microsphere bone scaffold has a cumulative drug release of 45.0 ± 0.90% on the first day, which is about 20% lower than that of pure PLGA drug-loaded microspheres. Moreover, its drug release can be sustained and stably released for more than 17 d, which is attributed to the enhancement of the binding force between the microspheres and HAp by SCMC (combination for more than 3 weeks). Meanwhile, the diameter of the antibacterial ring expanded from the initial 10 ± 0.50 to 28 ± 1.2 mm after 14 d, which also indicated the sustained and stable release of GS. Alamar Blue analysis results showed that 0.1% SCMC-modified composite bone scaffold is beneficial to the proliferation activity of bone cells, and its 14 day activity increased by 20%. The above results indicate that the SCMC-modified composite bone scaffold has the potential to treat/prevent osteomyelitis.

Copper microsphere hybrid mesoporous carbon as matrix for preparation of shape-stabilized phase change materials with improved thermal properties

Liu Yi,Chen Yan,Zhang Junwei,Gao Junkai,Han Zhi

Copper microsphere hybrid mesoporous carbon (MPC-Cu) was synthesized by the pyrolysis of polydopamine microspheres doped with copper ions that were prepared using a novel, facile and simple one-step method of dopamine biomimetic polymerization and copper ion adsorption. The resulting MPC-Cu was then used as a supporter for polyethylene glycol (PEG) to synthesize shape-stabilized phase change materials (PEG/MPC-Cu) with enhanced thermal properties. PEG/MPC-Cu was studied by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal constant analysis. The results demonstrated that the thermal conductivity of PEG/MPC-Cu was 0.502 W/(m K), which increased by 100% compared to pure PEG [0.251 W/(m K)]. The melting enthalpy of PEG/MPC-Cu was 95.98 J/g, indicating that PEG/MPC-Cu is a promising candidate for future thermal energy storage applications. In addition, the characterization results suggested that PEG-MPC-Cu possessed high thermal stability. Therefore, the method developed in this paper for preparing shape-stabilized phase change materials with improved thermal properties has substantial engineering application prospects.

Silver microsphere doping porous-carbon inspired shape-stable phase change material with excellent thermal properties: preparation, optimization, and mechanism

Zhang Junwei,Chen Yan,Nie Zeguang,Chen Zhengshou,Gao Junkai

In this study, silver microspheres (SMS) were introduced into cotton stalk porous-carbon (CSP) to prepare silver microsphere doping porous-carbon (SMS-CSP), and then SMS-CSP was used as the matrix of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to synthesize shape-stable phase change material of PEG/SMS-CSP. It was found that the introduction of SMS into CSP could not only greatly improve the loading capacity of the porous-carbon for PEG, but also could increase the thermal conductivity of PEG/SMS-CSP. Additionally, the method of introducing SMS into porous-carbon had the advantages of environmental protection and simple operation. Moreover, the raw material of cotton stalk is a kind of agricultural waste, which has the merits of wide source, low price and easy to obtain. Furthermore, in the preparation of cotton stalk porous-carbon, with the increase of pyrolysis temperature the thermal conductivity of PEG/SMS-CSP could be enhanced significantly. The mechanism about the enhancement of thermal conductivity was clarified, which could provide more basic theory for the study about the thermal conductivity of shape-stable phase change materials (ss-PCMs) based on porous-carbon.

Rapid and ultrasensitive surface enhanced Raman scattering detection of hexavalent chromium using magnetic Fe3O4/ZrO2/Ag composite microsphere substrates

Xin-Yue Wang,Jie Yang,Ling Zhou,Gao Song,Fan Lu,Li-Jun You,Ju-Mei Li

It is greatly significant to sense hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in water because Cr (VI) is one of the most toxic heavy metals and is extremely harmful for human health and environment. In this study, we explored sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for rapid detection of Cr (VI) using magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag composite microspheres. We firstly coated uniform zirconium dioxide layer around Fe 3 O 4 cores to achieve Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 microspheres and then deposited silver nanoparticles onto their surface via controlled reduction of AgNO 3 by n-butylamine. The SERS sensitivity of Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag composite microspheres were easily tailored via facilely changing the concentration of AgNO 3 to tune the coverage of silver nanoparticles on the Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag. We used 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as a Raman molecule to evaluate the SERS activity of Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag. They illustrated excellent SERS property as well as magnetic responsibility. The optimized Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag were employed to quantitatively detect Cr (VI) in aqueous solution. The results showed good linear relationship between SERS intensities and logarithm concentrations of Cr (VI) (R 2 = 0.98) with a detection limit of low down to 10 −7 M, which is much lower than the safety value (1 μM) in drinking water of United States Environmental Protection Agency. Moreover, the highly uniform and robust Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag composite microspheres display outstanding signal reproducibility (RSD = 8.34 %) and good storage stability. These results indicate that the prepared Fe 3 O 4 /ZrO 2 /Ag composite microspheres have promising application prospect for SERS analysis of environmental pollutants.

Immobilization laccase on heterophase TiO2 microsphere as a photo-enzyme integrated catalyst for emerging contaminants degradation under visible light

Ying Zhang,Jing Gao,Xin Xin,Lihui Wang,Heyu Li,Xiaobing Zheng,Yanjun Jiang

The successful combination of enzymes and photocatalysts in one pot is an elegant approach for the reactions with high efficiency. This combination usually requires both enzymes and photocatalysts with reasonable activity under the same condition. Herein, a photo-enzyme integrated catalyst by immobilizing laccase on clustered porous TiO 2 heterophase junction (HPJs) microsphere (denoted as mTiO 2 -CVs) is synthesized for the first time. The TiO 2 microsphere with ordered regular radial structure and controllable heterophase junction (anatase/rutile) composition is prepared by a pressure-driven hydrothermal assembly method. The ratio of rutile and anatase phase of mTiO 2 -CVs can be controlled by adjusting the amount of hydrochloric acid in the preparing process. The characterization results of mTiO 2 -CVs prove that the mTiO 2 -CVs has regular morphology, uniform mesoporous structure, larger specific surface area and narrower band gap, and can realize the effective utilization of visible light. After immobilizing laccase on mTiO 2 -CVs by adsorption method, the integrated catalyst (mTiO 2 -CVs2.5@lac) can be obtained. Compared with free laccase, mTiO 2 -CVs2.5, and commercial P25, mTiO 2 -CVs2.5@lac shows higher catalytic efficiency in the emerging contaminants degradation under visible light. Therefore, the photo-enzyme integrated catalyst presented in this study provides a promising platform for emerging organic pollutants degradation by combining the enzymes with photocatalysts

Fabrication of three-dimensional porous cellulose microsphere bioreactor for biotransformation of polydatin to resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum Siebold & Zucc

Dong-Yang Zhang,Yi Wan,Xiao-Hui Yao,Cong Chen,Yu-Xiong Ju,Fei-Fan Shuang,Yu-Jie Fu,Tao Chen,Wei-Guo Zhao,Li Liu,Long Li

In this study, in order to bio-transform polydatin to resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum extract, a 3D-porous structured cellulose microsphere (CMs) immobilized with β-glucosidase acted as a micro-bioreactor. To successfully immobilize β-glucosidase, CMs was treated with epoxidation to attach three different functional amion groups, and finally combined with β-glucosidase. CMs provided large surface area (32.0 m²/g) and many sites for immobilization of β-glucosidase and chemical modification. The porosity of CMs was 90 % and its density was about 1.00 g/m 3 . According to SEM images, the 3D-porous structure was obviously found and the result of FTIR proved the successful modification of amino groups. The crystal structure of CMs was changed from crystalline cellulose I-β to crystalline cellulose II during the sol-gel method. In the biotransformation tests of the Polygonum cuspidatum extracts, the conversion rate of polydatin reached 93.06 %, and after conversion, the concentration of resveratrol was two times higher than the original Polygonum cuspidatum extract. In addition, the cellulose microsphere micro-bioreactor also possessed good reusability, which could maintain 89.2 % activity after being repeatedly operated 8 times. Therefore, this cellulose microsphere micro-bioreactor can be successfully used to produce resveratrol from polydatin, and this micro-bioreactor may also have the potential to convert other plant glycosides into aglycones. Moreover, because of their good biocompatibility, the 3D porous cellulose microspheres can also be used for immobilization of other enzymes to prepare efficient bioreactors.
