Mo doping of BiOBr nanoflowers for the degradation of tetracycline by heterogeneous activation of persulfate under visible light

Min Wang,Beiyang Guo,Jiayu Zhan,Yuan Zhuang,Sridhar Komarneni,Jianfeng Ma

Mo-doped BiOBr nanoflowers were prepared by hydrothermal method with various Bi:Mo molar ratios, and their degradation efficiency of tetracycline under visible light was investigated using K 2 S 2 O 8 activation. Among the above series of catalysts, the sample containing 2% Mo dopant exhibited the optimum photocatalytic activity, which could efficiently remove tetracycline (TC) within 40 min. The mechanism of photocatalytic activity can be well explained by the generation of superoxide radicals (O 2 − ), sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and holes (h + ), which are responsible for the degradation of TC. In addition, the 2 %Mo-BiOBr catalyst has good recycling stability.

Visible light driven Nd2O3/Mo(S,O)3-x·0.34H2O heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Sleshi Fentie Tadesse,Dong-Hau Kuo,Worku Lakew Kebede,Girma Sisay Wolde

Developing low-cost and visible-light-driven metal oxide and sulfide-based photocatalysts for the degradation of organic dyes has been a major area of research to mitigate environmental pollution. In this study, a low-cost and facile precipitation method at low temperature of 95 °C was used to synthesize visible-light-driven Nd 2 O 3 /Mo(S,O) 3-x ·0.34H 2 O heterojunctions (NdMoOS). The crystal structure, elemental composition, optical, and electrical properties of as-prepared materials were investigated using various analytical techniques. Organic dyes of methyl orange (MO), Rhodamine B (RhB), and Methylene blue (MB) were selected as model organic pollutants to evaluate the photocatalytic efficiency of as-synthesized materials under visible light irradiation. 20 mol% NdMoOS nanocomposite showed excellent degradation efficiency and it decomposed 98.8%, 99.9%, and 99.8% of MO, RhB, and MB after 120 min, 90 min, and 90 min visible light irradiation, respectively. HPLC-MS analysis further confirms the complete removal of dyes. The formation of heterojunction, high charge separation, and low recombination rate of photoinduced e - -h +  pairs can contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic activity. Superoxide radicals (O 2–• ), hydroxyl radicals (HO • ), and holes (h +  ) were identified as major oxidative species involved in the photocatalytic degradation mechanisms of MO, RhB, and MB dyes.

Production of liquid fuels from Kraft lignin over bimetallic Ni–Mo supported on ZIF-derived porous carbon catalyst

Ge Guo,Wenzhi Li,Tauseef Ahmed,DuoDuo Hu,Ru Cui,Baikai Zhang,Xia Zhang

Non-noble bimetallic NiMo supported on zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived porous carbon (NiMo@FDC) catalyst for lignin depolymerization has been successfully developed. The synergism between Ni and Mo species in NiMo@FDC catalyst could promote the catalytic cleavage of C–O linkages in Kraft lignin. At a low reaction temperature of 240 °C and under 4 MPa H2, the lignin liquefaction yield was 98.85 wt% and minimum coke yield was 1 wt%, particularly when using 10%NiMo@FDC catalyst. Additionally, at a high reaction temperature of 300 °C and under 2 MPa H2, there was an overall yield of 86 wt% of liquid product and 42 wt% of petroleum ether soluble product. The higher heating value (HHV) increased from 27.65 MJ kg−1 to 34.11 MJ kg−1. In the cycling experiment, the bifunctional catalyst also demonstrated reversability and stability. The synergy of Ni hydrogenation sites and Mo coupled adsorption sites identified a possible mechanism path, which could offer considerable potential for lignin depolymerization.

Activating Edge-Mo of 2H-MoS2 via Coordination with Pyridinic N–C for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Jiayi Qin,Cong Xi,Rui Zhang,Tao Liu,Peichao Zou,Deyao Wu,Qianjin Guo,Jing Mao,Huolin Xin,Jing Yang

It is highly desirable to develop all-pH-compatible hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts that can be used universally in a variety of different electrolyzers and operated in different pH conditions, i.e., acid, alkaline, microbial, chlor-alkali, etc. So far, two-dimensional layered MoS2 and Mo-based carbon materials have been regarded as promising pH-universal HER electrocatalysts. 2H-MoS2 as a naturally occurring and thermodynamically favorable phase, yet still suffers from poor HER activity in neutral and alkaline electrolytes. Herein, a hybrid electrocatalyst, i.e., 2H-MoS2/N-doped mesoporous graphene, rich in interfacial Mo–pyridinic N coordination is fabricated. The optimized hybrid catalyst delivers long-term durability and outstanding HER activity with overpotentials of 110, 145, and 142 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in acidic, alkaline, and phosphate buffered solutions (PBS) media, respectively, outperforming most of the previously reported MoS2-based catalysts. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the interfacial pyridinic N has a higher tendency to bond with Mo atoms than pyrrolic and graphitic N, and the edge-Mo coordinated with pyridinic N could serve as HER active sites. DFT calculations further reveal that Mo–pyridinic N coordination modifies the charge density of edge-Mo, in turn optimizing the hydrogen absorption energy and facilitating water dissociation, and thereby significantly promoting the intrinsic catalytic activity for the pH-universal HER process.

High-valence Mo(VI) derived from in-situ oxidized MoS2 nanosheets enables enhanced electrochemical responses for nitrite measurements

Hao Lin Zou,Ling Yun Qin,Hong Qun Luo,Bang Lin Li,Nian Bing Li

Semiconducting MoS 2 obtained from the liquid-phase exfoliation is oxidized at the potentials higher than 0.65 V via applied electrochemical processes, and high-valence Mo(VI) are formed. The oxidized MoS 2 exhibits comparable performance to the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite, promoting the construction of sensors based on the assembly of nanomaterials. The signal amplification mechanism is exploited, and enhanced sensing responses are confirmed considering the strong coupling effect of Mo(VI) to nitrite. In order to optimize the sensing performance, the measurement parameters including the pH of buffer solutions, scan rates, and modification conditions are discussed. The cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry are successfully employed, and the oxidized MoS 2 performs satisfactory linear relationship to nitrite concentrations ranging from 1.0 μM to 386.0 μM, with the detection limit of 0.028 μM. The oxidation state and enhanced electrochemical responses of semiconducting MoS 2 as well as the developed nitrite sensing strategy inspire emerging characteristics of layered nanostructures and achieve the high potential in practical environmental and food safety monitoring.

Novel gold nanoparticles functionalized Mo-polydopamine hollow sphere as an efficient quencher in conjugated microporous polymer electrochemiluminescent system

Li Song,Jingling Wu,Gui Zhang,Pingkun Liu,Guangrong Kuang,Yingzi Fu

The construction of an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor achieving sensitive detection of cancer markers by improving the intensity of luminescent materials and the effect of quenchers is still under study. Herein, we designed an ECL sandwich immunosensor for sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA), which integrated gold nanoparticles functionalized Mo-polydopamine hollow sphere (Au@Mo-PDA, as a quencher) with platinum nanoparticles modified conjugated microporous polymer (Pt-CMP, as a luminophore) in the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA, as a coreactant). First, CMP with large specific surface area and high porosity was electropolymerized on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) employing carbazole-riched 2,6-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl) anthracene-9,10-dione as a precursor. Then, platinum nanoparticles were electrodeposited on CMP to construct a high initial ECL intensity system (signal on). Meanwhile, Pt-CMP with good biocompatibility could be used as a matrix to load a mass of prostate specific capture antibody (Ab 1 ). When the Au@Mo-PDA labelled prostate specific detection antibody (Ab 2 ) was introduced via sandwich immuno-reaction, the quantitative detection of PSA was realized by the quenching effect of Au@Mo-PDA since the quinone unit in Mo-PDA could annihilate the excited state of Pt-CMP* (signal-off). The proposed ECL system performs a good linearity to PSA concentration ranging from 10 fg mL −1 to 5 ng mL −1 with a low detection limit of 4.2 fg mL −1 and possesses high selectivity, stability and reproducibility. This work provides a versatile platform for the application of Mo-polydopamine based hollow sphere and conjugated microporous polymer in ECL biosensors.

H2O2 self-supplying Mo/Fe@CuO2 nanozyme with NIR light enhanced catalytic activity and photothermal synergistic antibacterial application

Feijian Xiao,Dezhi Yang,Chun Xun,Haiyan Li,Qiulan Li,Zitao Zhong,Daqiao Wei,Yaling Yang

Nanozymes have drawn increasing attention due to unique enzyme-mimic catalytic activities for the treatment of bacterial infections. Herein, a novel tri-metal nanozyme for synergistic eradication of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) was generated by Mo/Fe doped carbon dots (Mo/Fe-CDs) wrapping copper peroxide (CuO 2 ) nanozyme (Mo/Fe@CuO 2 ). Mo/Fe@CuO 2 showed near-infrared (NIR) light-enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity, and H 2 O 2 self-supply to promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for highly efficient antibacterial photothermal therapy. The CuO 2 could generate H 2 O 2 in the acidic microenvironment, and Mo/Fe-CDs consequently could convert H 2 O 2 to hydroxyl radicals (·OH), resulting in the improvement of sterilization efficiency. Interestingly, Mo/Fe-CDs could activate the transformation of Cu 2+ to Cu + through the co-catalytic reaction based on the Mo 4+ /Mo 6+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couples, and provided photonic hyperthermia (PTT) to enhance the peroxidase-like activity. Meanwhile, Mo/Fe@CuO 2 showed glutathione (GSH) oxidase-like activity, which can achieve the depletion of glutathione (GSH) in bacteria, thus significantly improving the bactericidal effect. The collaborative eradication of bacteria, through innovative metal carbon-based nanozyme technology, provides a powerful and feasible approach to treating bacterial infections that threaten human health.

Activated carbon modified by Mo-doped CQDs: An efficient method to reduce the thermal hazard in toluene adsorption

Hongwei Ren,Hongyu Dong,Tengda Zhao,Zhongqing Yan,Benzhen Jia,Liang Han,Jinfeng Zhang

Activated carbon (AC) is one of the typical adsorbents for industrial treatment of VOCs, but AC itself has a high calorific value. When the heat generated by low-temperature oxidation cannot be released, it is easy to store heat and oxidize spontaneously, resulting in immeasurable harm. Therefore, it is important to study and improve the thermal stability of AC. In this study, Mo-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was synthesized to enhance the safety of AC usage. The structure of AC before and after modification was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). On the modified Mo-doped CQDs/AC, there are more crystalline structures formed by Mo oxides on the surface, which makes the intermolecular force on the surface of AC increase. At the same time, Mo oxide has strong oxidation resistance, which can inhibit the thermal decomposition process of AC, and has stronger stability. The spontaneous combustion tendency and thermal hazard of AC before and after modification were greatly improved. The heat released in the toluene adsorption by the modified AC at different temperatures was significantly lower than the heat released by the unmodified AC. According to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the adsorption performance of Mo-doped CQDs (2.5 wt%) was 1.6 times higher than that of AC when the system was 25 °C. The results showed that Na 2 MoO 4 CQDs modified AC could effectively improve the thermal stability and greatly reduce the spontaneous combustion tendency. A relative fire safety performance evaluation model was also established to comprehensively evaluate the fire risk of VOCs treatment by AC.

Highly sensitive detection of glucose at a novel non-enzyme electrochemical sensing based on Mo-doped CoO Nanosheets

Pengkun Xia,Jing Pan,Yue Zhang,Mingzhen Mao,Lei Ma,Jianlin Chen,Long Zhang,Hui Wang,Hui Fan,Xiaohui Gao,Lianwen Deng

Graphical Mo−CoO nanosheets grown on nickel foam was used as a non-enzymatic glucose sensing electrode with a high sensitivity (89.3 mA cm −2 mM −1 ) and a low detection limit (0.43 μM). DFT calculations results confirmed that the lower adsorption free energy (−1.79 eV) for glucose adsorbing on Mo−CoO-1 surface promoted the glucose electrochemical oxidation reaction and then enhanced the sensing performance. In this work, a Mo doped CoO nanosheet grown on nickel foam (labeled as: Mo−CoO) with defect-rich and improved electron transfer capacity was designed to be used as a novel non-enzyme electrode material. Physical characterizations demonstrated the Mo elements were doped inside of the samples and they were mutually stabilized with each other, resulting in a high structural stability electrochemical catalytical activity even if the content of Mo was low. For non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensing, the prepared Mo−CoO-1 showed a remarkable sensitivity of 89.3 mA cm −2 mM −1 , and a low detection limit of 0.43 μM. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed that the doped Mo atom exhibited a higher d-band center compared to the Co atom. A stronger p-d orbital hybridization between the glucose and the Mo atoms indicated the enhancement of glucose adsorption and activation. Importantly, Mo−CoO-1 provided a good selectivity and long-term stability, which can be expected to be used in future practical applications.

NiSe2 nanosheets with electronic structure regulated by Mo-doping as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Changyi Xu,Guimei Li,Wanchun Huang,Xiangyun Luo,Mengmeng Wei,Huan Wen,Yejin Li,Xiaokun Li,Youlin Zhang,Wei Chen

Developing low-cost, highly efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is vital but still a challenge. Hetero-atom doping is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity of electrocatalysts by increasing active sites and regulating electronic structure. Here, Mo-doped NiSe 2 nanosheets were in situ grown on nickel foam (NF) by hydrothermal and the subsequent selenization process as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. Incorporation of Mo into NiSe 2 can regulate the electronic structure, increase the numbers of high-valence Ni 3+ and active sites, generate the disorder defects due to the formation of active material NiOOH, and decrease the charge transfer resistance. The above synergistic roles make the Mo-doped NiSe 2 to present superior catalytic performances and remarkable stability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Under alkaline condition, the overpotentials of OER and HER are 210 mV and 172 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm –2 , respectively. Moreover, only a low cell voltage of 1.57 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm –2 in a water splitting device assembled with the Mo-doped NiSe 2 as the anode and cathode. Therefore, this study opens up a new way for designing non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts by Mo doping.

Ultrasmall IrO2 nanoparticles anchored on hollow Co-Mo multi-oxide heterostructure nanocages for efficient oxygen evolution in acid

Weiwei Han,Yang Qian,Fan Zhang,Yi He,Ping Li,Xingwang Zhang

The application of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is largely limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which usually requires noble metal Ir/Ru-based catalysts. It’s desirable to design low-cost catalysts with less content of Ir/Ru in OER without sacrificing their catalytic performance. Herein, the ultrasmall IrO 2 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 nanocages (IrO 2 @Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 ) electrocatalyst is demonstrated. Structural characterization indicates that hollow Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 acts as the effective support to provide abundant anchoring sites and heterogenous interfaces, which enable the catalyst to expose more active sites and accelerate charge transport. As a result, the representative IrO 2 @Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 exhibits an outstanding OER activity ( η  = 236 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) with a superior mass activity of 713 A g –1 Ir at 1.53 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 that are comparable to most reported catalysts. Theoretical calculations also reveal that the introduction of Mo can effectively modify electronic structure and decrease adsorption energy barriers of oxygen intermediates, and thereby enhancing OER catalytic activity. This work provides a new idea to develop highly efficient low Ir catalysts for OER.

Significantly enhanced surface oxygen vacancies over W18O49 via Mo doping and plasma-induced surface reconstruction for oxidative desulfurization

Jiayu Li,Jun Xiong,Haoxue Huang,Mei Zhang,Wenshuai Zhu,Jun Di

The non-stoichiometric structure of tungsten oxide (W 18 O 49 ) makes it easy to form oxygen vacancies near the low-valence W atoms, so the W 18 O 49 can be applied to oxidative desulfurization. To further improve the desulfurization activity of W 18 O 49 to meet the increasingly stringent environmental requirements, Mo doping and plasma-induced surface reconstruction cooperative strategies are developed. The incorporation of Mo species into the W 18 O 49 surface by replacing W sites can adjust the atomic and electronic structure of the catalyst surface and form more oxygen vacancies. After Mo doping into the W 18 O 49 , the plasma bombarded the surface of material to destroy part of the surface structure, thus producing the reactive sites with low coordination numbers. This reconstructed atomic surface also accompany to generate more oxygen vacancies, thus greatly improving the catalytic activity. Compared to pure W 18 O 49 , significantly improves oxidative desulfurization performance can be achieved over Mo-W 18 O 49 -P, and deep desulfurization is realized within 3 h. Moreover, the optimal Mo-W 18 O 49 -P shows better stability than pure W 18 O 49 , which can be recycled for 12 times. This work provides an accessible pathway for cooperative enhancing the catalytic oxidative desulfurization activity of oxide catalysts.
