Epitaxial Growth of Highly Oriented Metallic MoO2@MoS2 Nanorods on C-sapphire

Di Wu,Yingguo Yang,Peng Zhu,Xiaoming Zheng,Xiaoliu Chen,Jiao Shi,Fei Song,Xingyu Gao,Xueao Zhang,Fangping Ouyang,Xiang Xiong,Yongli Gao,Han Huang

Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) has attracted many interests due to its unique properties and potential applications. Here, we report the synthesis of high quality MoO2@MoS2 nanorods on c-sapphire substrates through an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) approach. Optical microscopy (OM), cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and (grazing incidence) X-ray diffraction ((GI)XRD) measurements reveal that these MoO2 nanorods exhibit epitaxial growth behaviors on c-sapphire substrates with the orientation relationship of MoO2(100)∥sapphire(0001) and MoO2 ⟨001⟩ aligned well with sapphire ⟨101̅0⟩. Raman spectroscopy/imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and GIXRD results disclose that such MoO2 nanorods are wrapped by MoS2 (MoO2@MoS2). Devices based on transferred individual MoO2@MoS2 nanorods show a resistivity of ∼1.65 × 10–4 Ω·cm, comfirming that such nanorods possess higher crystalline degree. Our findings will be helpful for the applications of MoO2@MoS2 in the fields of nanoelectronic devices.

Novel Red Emission from MoO3/MoS2–MoO2–MoO3 Core–Shell Belt Surface

Lei Wang,Xiaohong Ji,Ting Wang,Qinyuan Zhang

Electrically driven red emission from MoS2–MoO2–MoO3 (MS-MO) hybrid-based metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) devices is reported for the first time. MoO3 belts with high crystal quality and sufficient size are synthesized by thermal deposition. A layer of MS-MO hybrid is then produced on the belt surface to form MoO3/MS-MO core–shell by sulfurization. The devices exhibit unique electrical properties, a nonlinear I–V curve, and electric hysteresis characteristics at high applied biases (>2.4 V), where MS-MO hybrids act as electron transport channels. The electroluminescent current of the device increases to a set current limit over time when a constant bias is applied. The novel characteristics of the device are attributed to the space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism occurring in MS-MO hybrids. The strong light emission is from recombination of excitons within the MoS2 phase. This work develops a simple and effective method to drive MoS2 to emit light on a large scale without using monolayer MoS2 and vertical p–n junctions, indicating great potential for future 2D optoelectronics and photonics applications.

Kirigami-Inspired Highly Stretchable Nanoscale Devices Using Multidimensional Deformation of Monolayer MoS2

Wei Zheng,Weicheng Huang,Feng Gao,Huihui Yang,Mingjin Dai,Guangbo Liu,Bin Yang,Jia Zhang,Yong Qing Fu,Xiaoshuang Chen,Yunfeng Qiu,Dechang Jia,Yu Zhou,PingAn Hu

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, such as MoS2, are greatly attractive for flexible devices due to their unique layered structures, novel physical and electronic properties, and high mechanical strength. However, their limited mechanical strains (<2%) can hardly meet the demands of loading conditions for most flexible and stretchable device applications. In this Article, inspired from Kirigami, the ancient Japanese art of paper cutting, we design and fabricate nanoscale Kirigami architectures of 2D layered MoS2 on a soft substrate of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a top-down fabrication process. Results show that the Kirigami structures significantly improve the reversible stretchability of flexible 2D MoS2 electronic devices, which is increased from 0.75% to ∼15%. This increase in flexibility is originated from a combination of multidimensional deformation capabilities from the nanoscale Kirigami architectures consisting of in-plane stretching and out-of-plane deformation. We further discover a new fundamental relationship of electrical conductance and large strain in MoS2 Kirigami structures through both experimental work and finite element simulation. Results show that the electrical conductance of the stretchable MoS2 Kirigami is closely related to its different stages of structural evolutions under strain: e.g., elastic stretching; then a combination of elastic stretching and out-of-plane buckling; and finally stretching and structural damage. This method provides a new opportunity to fabricate highly flexible and stretchable sensors and actuators using different types of 2D materials.

Loss and Recovery of Nano-MoS2 Lubricity in Carbon Soot Contaminated Polyalphaolefin

Miao Yan,Zhong Chonglong,Li Zhixiang,Xu Yong,Hu Enzhu,Hu Kunhong

Carbon soot (CS) is a contaminant of engine oil, and the interaction between CS and oil additives should be understood. This work investigated the interaction between CS and nano-MoS 2 . Results show that adding 0.5% nano-MoS 2 in polyalphaolefin significantly improved the lubricity. However, the lubricity of nano-MoS 2 unexpectedly disappeared after adding 0.5% CS because CS prevented nano-MoS 2 from forming a tribofilm. Interestingly, the lubricity was mostly recovered by ZDDP, which removed the inhibition of CS by helping form a MoS 2 -contained tribofilm. Another method was also found to remove the inhibition without the help of ZDDP, that is, replacing nano-MoS 2 with nano-MoS 2 /nano-TiO 2 heterostructures. Nano-TiO 2 was immune to soot and could carry nano-MoS 2 into the friction interface by their heterojunction to synergistically form a tribofilm. Graphical abstract

TiO2-modified MoS2 monolayer films enable sensitive NH3 sensing at room temperature

Lun Tan,Xianzhen Liu,Peng Wu,Liwei Cao,Wei Li,Ang Li,Zhao Wang,Haoshuang Gu

The research and development of high-performance NH3 sensors are of great significance for environment monitoring and disease diagnosis applications. Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 nanomaterials have exhibited great potential for building room-temperature (RT) NH3 sensors but still suffer from relatively low sensitivity. Herein, the TiO2-modified monolayer MoS2 films with controllable TiO2 loading contents are fabricated by a facile approach. A remarkable enhancement in the RT NH3 sensing performance is achieved after the n–n hetero-compositing of the TiO2/MoS2 system. The device with 95% surface coverage of TiO2 shows enhanced sensor response, low detection limit (0.5 ppm), wide detection range (0.5–1000 ppm), good repeatability, and superior selectivity against other gases. In situ Kelvin potential force microscopy results revealed that the TiO2 modification not only improved the surface reactivity of the sensing layers but also contributed to the NH3 sensing performance by serving as the “gas-gating” layers that modulated the electron depletion layer and the conductivity of the MoS2 films. Such an n–n hetero-compositing strategy can provide a simple and cost-effective approach for developing high-performance NH3 sensors based on 2D semiconductors.

Dynamics Engineering of Composite MoS2 Electrode Toward Photo-Rechargeable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Cheng Cheng,Xuwu Xiao,Yale Yao,Xukang Li,Lituo Zheng,Yiying Huang,Ming-deng Wei,Zhensheng Hong

Photo-rechargeable batteries (PRB) featuring dual-functional electrode system have emerged as a novel solution to address the solar harvest and energy storage in a highly integrated device. Nevertheless, it is a big challenge to really achieve PRB only with light illumination due to a serious dynamics mismatching between the low storage kinetics and instantaneous photo-generated carriers. In this study, a 3D carbon nanotube interconnected MoS 2 nanosheets (CNT-MoS 2 ) are successfully constructed as a dual-functional electrode for photo-rechargeable Na-ion batteries. Theoretically, electrons tend to transfer from the MoS 2 CNTs and accumulate on CNT, while holes tend to accumulate on the MoS 2 . Experimentally, such material exhibits remarkably improved surface potential under light illumination and longer photoluminescence lifetime. It also displays excellent Na-ion storage kinetics in ether-based electrolytes and efficient utilization of photo-generated carriers. As a result, it exhibits significantly enhanced sodium-ion storage capacity under light illumination and a good photoconversion and storage efficiency of 2.56%. Notably, it has a remarkable photo-charging response under zero external bias, reaching a high photo-charging voltage of 2.0 V, while delivering a high capacity of ≈400 mAh g −1 and a reversible photo-charging cycling. This work firstly demonstrates the achievement of real Na-ion PRB through regulating the electrochemical kinetics.

4-Chlorophenol Removal Using BiFeO3/MoS2 Piezoelectric Photocatalytic Material Coupled with Peroxymonosulfate

Huan Deng,Qingsong Xie,Shengnan Li,Hai Lu,Hongyan Wei,Tiehong Song

In this work, a BiFeO3/MoS2(BM) material was utilized to establish a piezophotocatalytic system under combined visible-light (Vis) illumination and mechanical stirring (MS), which synergistically activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward the oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), a representative refractory organic pollutant in water. Under mechanical stirring, the piezoelectric effect in BM generates a polarized electric field that promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thereby providing more charge carriers for PMS activation and subsequent radical generation. The degradation performance, underlying mechanism, toxicity of degradation products, reusability, and applicability in different water matrices in the BM(1:3)/PMS process were comprehensively evaluated. The results indicated that BM(1:3) exhibited superior performance over other BM ratios (BM(2:1), BM(1:1), and BM(1:2)), achieving 91.6% removal of 4-CP within 30 min at a rotation speed = 1000 rpm, PMS = 2.0 mM, BM(1:3) = 0.5 mg/L, and initial 4-CP = 10 mg/L. Furthermore, water quality parameters exerted notable impacts on 4-CP decomposition. A pH of 4.7 was favorable, and the presence of Cl−enhanced the 4-CP degradation, while HCO3−and H2PO4−suppressed the removal efficiency; SO42−and HA showed negligible influence. DFT calculations identified the reactive sites on 4-CP that are prone to attack by various reactive oxygen species (e.g., •O2−,1O2, •OH, and SO4•−), resulting in the transformation of 4-CP through three degradation pathways into smaller organic intermediates, most of which were less toxic than 4-CP. The BM(1:3) catalyst exhibited satisfactory reusability; however, a significant decrease in 4-CP degradation efficiency was observed in the lake water matrix. Overall, the synergy between photocatalysis and the piezoelectric effect in the BM(1:3)/PMS system offers a useful research foundation for the piezophotocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants such as 4-CP.

Rational design of MoS2/CoNi heterogeneous for superior electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Mei Wu,Xiaohui Liang,Shaoyang Pan,Hongchang Wang,Zengming Man

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has garnered significant attention as a promising electromagnetic wave absorber, owing to its distinctive layered structure composed of S-Mo-S slabs, weak van der Waals interlayer forces, high specific surface area, and tunable morphology. These inherent properties are particularly advantageous for mitigating electromagnetic interference in emerging technologies such as 5 G wireless communication and wearable electronic devices. The ion intercalation technique commonly used in energy catalysis is utilized to enhance the absorbing performance of MoS 2 by increasing the spacing between layers and insert CoNi alloy into its layer. The developed MoS 2 /CoNi heterojunction absorber effectively suppress alloy oxidation while regulating the electromagnetic parameters and impedance matching of the composite, leading to a significant improvement in absorption performance. The results prove that the prepared MoS 2 /CoNi heterostructures exhibit excellent comprehensive electromagnetic wave absorption performance. All samples exhibit the minimum reflection loss values lower than −50 dB, with the corresponding matching frequencies being at low frequencies. Excellent absorbing performance is inseparable from the improvement of material structure, and the modification of MoS 2 by ion intercalation is the key core to improve electromagnetic wave absorption performance. This discovery provides a promising alternative technique that utilizes two-dimensional materials to develop simple, customizable and low-cost absorbers.

Electronic-Mediated Slip Regulation at MoS2–Water Interface via Self-Assembled Monolayers

Yishu Han,Rui Zhang,Zhuolin Wu,Huan Liu,Jianbin Luo,Dameng Liu

Reducing friction at the solid–liquid interfaces is critical for improving the efficiency of fluid transport, underwater equipment, and microfluidic devices. While macroscopic strategies have achieved significant friction reduction, experimental investigation into the underlying microscopic mechanisms remains limited, especially from atomic and electronic perspectives. In this work, an order-of-magnitude enhancement in slip length at the MoS2–water interface is achieved via self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), accompanied by measurable changes in interfacial electronic properties. Spectroscopic analyses performed in both air and aqueous environments reveal that the electronic state of MoS2 is jointly modulated by SAMs and interfacial water. Exciton recombination behavior under optical excitation serves as an indirect probe of interfacial electron transfer. Combined surface potential measurements and density functional theory simulations indicate that changes in surface electronic states may influence charge density which, along with SAM-induced hydrophobicity, governs the observed slip behavior. Electrostatic gating experiments further decouples the contribution of substrate hydrophobicity, enabling a more precise interpretation of the interfacial electronic influence. These findings suggest that interfacial electrons contribute to slip behavior at solid–liquid interfaces and offer valuable insights into electronic effects in nanoscale friction.

A MXene/MoS2 heterostructure based biosensor for accurate sweat ascorbic acid detection

Yue Zhang,Zheng Wang,Xiaohao Liu,Yating Liu,Yuxuan Cheng,Daxiang Cui,Feng Chen,Wentao Cao

Biosensors with high sensitivity to sweat composition analysis are essential for non-invasive, real-time physiological monitoring of individual health status. However, it is challenging to construct a well-conductive and stable interface for electrochemical sensors. Here, we construct a sensitive sweat biosensor for ascorbic acid (AA) quantification built on a heterostructure with three-dimensional (3D) linked network microstructures made from two-dimensional (2D) MoS 2 nanosheets and 2D Ti 3 C 2 MXene. The as obtained 2D/2D heterostructures presented numerous active sites and avoid the issue of reduced surface areas, which was generally brought on by the accumulation of 2D nanomaterials. The electrode modified with 2D/2D heterostructure could realize efficient electron transport by abundant accesses to absorb AA molecules. Based on the inherent conductivity, extremely porous structure, and active catalytic properties of 2D/2D heterostructures, the biosensor for detecting the AA in artificial sweat had a sensitivity of 54.6nA μM −1 and a detection limit of 4.2 μM. This study provided a new promising approach for the design of high-performance sensing interfaces and facilitated the widespread use of personalized diagnostic devices.

Peroxidase-like MoS2/Ag nanosheets with synergistically enhanced NIR-responsive antibacterial activities

Chen Huiying,Zhao Xinshuo,Cui Bingbing,Cui Haohao,Zhao Mengyang,Shi Jun,Li Jingguo,Zhou Zhan

Pathogenic microbial infections have been threatening public health all over the world, which makes it highly desirable to develop an antibiotics-free material for bacterial infection. In this paper, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were constructed to inactive bacteria rapidly and efficiently in a short period under a near infrared (NIR) laser (660 nm) in the presence of H2O2. The designed material presented favorable features of peroxidase-like ability and photodynamic property, which endowed it with fascinating antimicrobial capacity. Compared with free MoS2 nanosheets, the MoS2/Ag nanosheets (denoted as MoS2/Ag NSs) exhibited better antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus by the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) from both peroxidase-like catalysis and photodynamic, and the antibacterial efficiency of MoS2/Ag NSs could be further improved by increasing the amount of Ag. Results from cell culture tests proved that MoS2/Ag3 nanosheets had a negligible impact on cell growth. This work provided new insight into a promising method for eliminating bacteria without using antibiotics, and could serve as a candidate strategy for efficient disinfection to treat other bacterial infections.

A polarization-sensitive photothermoelectric photodetector based on mixed-dimensional SWCNT–MoS2 heterostructures

Pei-Yu Huang,Hong-Ji Chen,Jing-Kai Qin,Liang Zhen,Cheng-Yan Xu

Mixed-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) integration has been demonstrated to be effective for the modulation of the physical properties of homogeneous materials. Herein, we reported the enhancement of photothermal conversion and decrease of thermal conductivity in metallic single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films with the integration of chemical vapor deposition-grown monolayer MoS2 films. The induced temperature gradient in SWCNT–MoS2 hybrid films drives carrier diffusion to generate photocurrent via the photothermoelectric (PTE) effect, and a self-powered photodetector working in the visible band range from 405 to 785 nm was demonstrated. The maximum responsivity of the device increases by 6 times compared to that of the SWCNT counterpart. More importantly, the mixed-dimensional device exhibits polarization-dependent photogeneration, showing a large anisotropy ratio of 1.55. This work paves a way for developing high-performance, polarization-sensitive photodetectors by mixed-dimensional integration.
