A strategy for constructing highly efficient Co3O4-C@SiO2 nanofibers catalytic membrane for NH3-SCR of NO and dust filtration

Huixian Zhou,Hui Zhong,Yiqing Zeng,Yutang Kang,Bin Chen,Shuanglu Ma,Yifan Li,Yu Zhang,Shasha Feng,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

The strategy of constructing catalytic membrane has a significant influence on its structure and performance. In this work, Co 3 O 4 -C x @SiO 2 nanofiber membranes (NFMs) were fabricated by an in-situ growth–pyrolysis–oxidation strategy. The Co 3 O 4 -C x catalyst derived from ZIF-67 was wrapped around nanofibers, which helps to maintain a stable membrane structure, then suppressing the reduction of gas permeability. Among the Co 3 O 4 -C x catalyst, the carbon skeleton can prevent the agglomeration of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles, obtaining an ultra-fine Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles with high dispersibility, redox property and surface area. The obtained Co 3 O 4 -C 300 @SiO 2 NFM exhibits outstanding ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH 3 -SCR) denitrification activity (T 90  = 225 °C at a GHSV of 77,000 h −1 ). The effect of catalyst loading on PM 2.5 filtration performance of SiO 2 NFM was also tested. Co 3 O 4 -C 300 @SiO 2 NFM has higher filtration efficiency (99.99%) than SiO 2 NFM at a lower pressure drop of 58 Pa, which suggests that catalyst loading via our method can improve the filtration performance of SiO 2 NFM. This work might provide a universal strategy for the design and preparation of highly efficient catalytic membrane.

Identification of Chalcone Analogues as Anti-Inflammatory Agents through Regulation of NF-κB and JNK Activation

Die Zhang,Wenping Wang,Huiping Ou,Jinhua Ning,Yingxun Zhou,Jin Ke,Anguo Hou,Lingyun Chen,Peng Li,Yunshu Ma,Wenbin Jin

To develop new anti-inflammatory agents with improved pharmaceutical profiles, a series of novel chalcone analogues were designed and synthesized. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of these compounds has been evaluated by screening inhibitory effects of the NO production in RAW264.7 cell lines. The most promising compounds 3h and 3l were selected to further investigated by assessment of their dose-dependent inhibitory activity against cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and PGE2 release. The further study also indicated that 3h and 3l could significantly suppress expressions of iNOS and COX-2 through NF-κB/JNK signaling pathway. Furthermore, compounds 3h and 3l could also remarkably inhibit the mRNAs expressions of inflammation-related genes. Docking simulation was conducted to position compounds 3h and 3l into the iNOS binding site to predict the probable binding mode. In conclusion, a series of chalcone analogues with reasonable drug-likeness obtained by in silico rapid prediction could be used as promising lead candidates.

Homologous divergence: Processing reshapes metabolite variations and relative odor activity values in black and green teas derived from Gougunao no. 2

Yongfa Guo,Jie Zhou,Zhuangzi Zhong,Shuang Li,Junjie Lu,Dingkun Liu,Li He,Shuaiwen Yin,Yang Wu,Huimin Sun

Using leaves from a single origin and the same harvest batch, processing was the sole variable: homologous Gougunao No. 2 green and black teas were produced. An integrated workflow (UHPLC–HRMS and HS-SPME–GC–MS) was combined with flavonoid contents and multiple antioxidant assays to probe how processing reshapes the composition–function–aroma nexus. Multivariate analysis clearly separated the two teas, with green tea showing higher flavonoids and stronger antioxidant readouts. In non-volatile fraction, 1988 features were detected, of which 713 changed significantly, implicating remodelling of flavonoid- and catechin-centred pathways and purine metabolism. In volatile fraction, 1066 compounds were annotated, with 76 differing significantly; relative odor activity value based analysis indicated that unsaturated aldehydes and sulphur-containing compounds drive a roasted, full-bodied profile in black tea, whereas alcohols, esters and selected terpenoids confer fresher, fruity notes in green tea. Overall, these results support a processing-associated bitterness–aroma rebalancing pattern and nominate candidate chemical indicators for quality evaluation.

Fast-response, no-pretreatment, and robustness air-water/oil amphibious superhydrophilic-superoleophobic surface for oil/water separation and oil-repellent fabrics

Xiaochen Li,Ying Peng,Fengfan Zhang,Zihao Yang,Zhaoxia Dong

Surfaces with uniform and stable superwetting behavior have enormous application prospects. In particular, an air-water/oil amphibious superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic surface is advantageous in oil-water separation and oil-repellent materials. However, existing methods to create this property require either water pretreatment or time-consuming stimulation process, which makes instant oil-water identification impossible. Here, inspired by Namib desert beetle, we propose a strategy to construct layers differing in surface free energies to achieve surfaces that are simultaneously superhydrophilic-superoleophobic. Rough microcrystalline cellulose particles were modified by 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy and perfluorooctanoic acid to successively construct high- and low-surface free energy layers. Surfaces prepared by simple spraying of these particles display excellent and stable superhydrophilicity-superoleophobicity under the amphibious conditions of air and water/oil, as well as excellent temperature and abrasion resistance. Pressed cotton membranes treated with these particles can effectively separate oil-water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions without any pretreatment, even when the oil phase is highly viscous. Moreover, cotton gloves coated with these particles have superior water permeability and oil repellency without losing breathability. These results suggest a new approach towards oil-water separation and oil-repellent fabrics.

Dietary Arginine Regulates Glycometabolism in Hybrid Grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂) via the IGF-1 and NO-cGMP Pathways

Haoran Yin,Lixing Wang,Zexin Lin,Ruilin Li,Qinxiao Cai,Zhiyu Zhou,Xiaoyi Wu

The hybrid grouper ( Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂), a typical carnivorous fish, has a limited ability to utilize dietary carbohydrates (CHOs). This study investigated the effects of different dietary arginine (Arg) levels (2.55 and 3.65%) and CHO-to-lipid ratios (C/L: 3.57, 2.39, 1.61) on the glycometabolism of hybrid grouper. Juvenile hybrid grouper (mean initial body length and weight: 7.8 cm and 13.04 g) were manually fed to fullness two times per day throughout a 7-week growth trial. The results showed that the C/L3.67 diets significantly elevated 2-h postprandial blood glucose concentration, as well as reduced hepatic glycogen level, intraperitoneal fat ratio (IPF), and the whole-body and hepatic lipid contents relative to the C/L2.39 and C/L1.61 diets. Dietary Arg supplementation significantly improved this metabolic disorder. These improvements were associated with enhanced plasma insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) concentration, hepatic phosphofructokinase (PFK) activity, nitric oxide (NO), and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels. They were also linked to the upregulated expression of key molecules in related pathways, including IGF-1 receptor (igf1r), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (pi3k), protein kinase AMP-activated catalytic subunit α (ampk-α), and protein kinase B (Akt) genes, as well as glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) proteins. Generally, suitable dietary Arg supplementation can reduce postprandial blood glucose and hepatic glycogen concentrations in hybrid grouper fed high C/L diets by regulating key genes and proteins within the IGF-1 and NO-cGMP pathways. This finding provided a nutritional intervention to enhance CHO utilization in hybrid grouper aquaculture.

Water-Enabled Conversion of NO and CO to NH3 over CuO x Clusters via Hydrolysis of Surface –NCO Intermediates

Wei Tan,Xueqing Liu,Jiawei Yang,Xiaoyu Ji,Kailong Ye,Shaohua Xie,Ge Yao,Chuanzhi Sun,Fudong Liu,Lin Dong

Abstract The catalytic conversion of gaseous NO to NH3 offers a promising dual-benefit strategy for environmental remediation and sustainable chemical synthesis. Herein, CuO/Al2O3 catalysts with varied CuO loadings (x wt %, xCu/Al) were developed for the possible NH3 production from NO reduction by CO with the assistance of H2O. While increasing CuO loading (1–12 wt %) monotonically improved NO conversion to N2 under dry conditions, the introduction of H2O dramatically boosted NO conversion on 5Cu/Al with highly dispersed CuOx clusters, raising its NO conversion comparable to that of 12Cu/Al. Further analysis revealed that NH3 was generated on xCu/Al catalysts under wet conditions, with NH3 generation on 5Cu/Al initiating at the lowest temperature (275 °C) and being the most vigorous. Combined experimental and theoretical analysis suggested that, on CuOx clusters, H2O facilitated the conversion of the NCO* intermediate to NH3 with a much lower activation barrier compared to its CO-mediated pathway to N2, well explaining the boosted NO conversion and NH3 yield on the 5Cu/Al catalyst upon H2O addition to NO + CO flow. This work highlights that a simple, earth-abundant Cu catalyst enabled the efficient and cost-effective synthesis of NH3 from air pollutants of NO and CO under mild conditions, underscoring a sustainable strategy that simultaneously addresses pollution abatement and resource recovery.

Coaxial Fibrous Dressing Enabling Sequential NO/H2 Release for Temporally Programmed Antibacterial and Healing-Promoting Functions in Infected Diabetic Wound Treatment

Zishuo Hou,Wuyang Zhang,Gangfeng Li,Hannan Cui,Hongli Chen,Tengjiao Wang,Yafei Feng,Peng Li

Infected diabetic wounds have become a major global health threat due to their complex conditions, making them difficult to heal. Herein, a coaxial fibrous dressing capable of sequential release of nitric oxide (NO) and molecular hydrogen (H2) was designed for the treatment of infected diabetic wounds. The outer layer of the coaxial fibers was physically loaded with the NO donor, enabling the first stage of rapid and high-level NO release (over 170 μM). The released NO contributed to the antibacterial function of the dressing (in vitro antibacterial assays demonstrated eradication rates of 99.99% and 99.04% against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively), thus facilitating accelerated transition of the wound through the inflammatory phase. The inner layer of coaxial fibers becomes progressively exposed following structural disintegration, enabling the hydrolysis of encapsulated H2 donor to achieve on-demand release of H2 under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The released H2 could promote wound healing through reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and macrophage M2 polarization, as validated by in vitro cell assessments. In vivo infected full-thickness skin defect model in diabetic mice demonstrated that the NO/H2 sequential release coaxial fibrous dressing significantly accelerated healing of infected wounds through rapid bactericidal action via substantial NO release, followed by further sequential H2 release promoting repairing and regeneration. This temporally sequential delivery of antibacterial and healing-promoting functions significantly accelerated the healing of infected diabetic wounds.

Engineering multiscale polypyrrole/carbon nanotubes interface to boost electron utilization in a bioelectrochemical system coupled with chemical absorption for NO removal

Wei Li,Huanyu Yue,Chunyan Zhang,Junyu Hu,Qiaoli Wang,Yuanming Li,Shihan Zhang,Jianmeng Chen,Jingkai Zhao

The chemical absorption-bioelectrochemical reduction (CABER) integrated system provides an alternative of good potential for NO removal. The efficient utilization of cathode electrons directly determines the system performance and operating cost. Herein, we synthesize a polypyrrole/carbon nanotubes (PPy/CNTs) composite to engineer a micro-and nanoscale interface with low resistance and high biocompatibility between the cathode and biofilms in the CABER system. The resulting PPy/CNTs biocathodes exhibit 36.4% increase in biomass density, 40.7%–302.6% increase in Faraday efficiency along Fe(III)EDTA reduction, and 204% increase in Fe(II)EDTA-NO reduction rate. The enrichment of functional microorganisms is validated to be a key strengthening factor, as the proportion of which increased from 57.9% to 84.6%. Moreover, for efficient electron transfer and utilization, a low-resistance electron transfer route, “electrode substrate → PPy (→ CNTs) → microbial cells → Fe(III)EDTA or Fe(II)EDTA-NO”, is realized in the multiscale conductive networks constructed of PPy/CNTs composite and microbial nanowires .

In situ synthesis of an advanced Z-scheme Bi/BiOI/black TiO2 heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient visible-light-driven NO purification

Qian Li,Jing Hu,Haiqiang Wang,Zhongbiao Wu

Limited light absorption and severe charge recombination have been widely acknowledged as the two main obstacles restricting the application of P25 in NO photocatalytic conversion. In this work, an advanced heterojunction photocatalyst of Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 was synthesized via an in-situ solid-state chemical reduction method. The black TiO 2 extended the light absorption to the full spectral region. It constructed a direct Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOI nanosheets, not only promoting the charge separation, but also preserving the strong oxidation ability of photogenerated holes in black TiO 2 and strong reducing ability of photogenerated electrons in BiOI. Thus, more •O 2 − and •OH radical could form when Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 was subjected to visible light irradiation. Besides, the introduced Bi metal nanoparticles could also enhance the light utilization and served as a cocatalyst to accept the electrons. Therefore, enhanced NO photocatalytic oxidation activity was obtained, with the optimal sample Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 exhibiting a high NO conversion efficiency of ~70% and NO x removal of ~45%. This work may provide a refreshing perspective for the design of heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient NO photocatalytic purification and other photocatalytic applications.

FeII(EDTA)–NO Reduction by Mn Powder in Wet Flue Gas Denitrification Technology Coupled with Mn2+ Recycling: Performance, Kinetics, and Mechanism

Jun Chen,Yi Chen,Dzmitry Hrynsphan,Yu Mei,Hua Pan,Jiali Wu,Jianmeng Chen,Jiachao Yao

FeII(EDTA) solution has been considered an efficient option in wet flue gas denitrification, whereas the generated FeII(EDTA)–NO restricts its wide application, suggesting that FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction is the key to this process. This work investigated the performance, kinetics, and mechanism of FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction by Mn powder coupled with manganese ion (Mn2+) recovery. We initially studied the performance of FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction with respect to the major influencing factors (i.e., the particle size of Mn powder, initial FeII(EDTA)–NO concentration, Mn powder concentration, stirring speed, and temperature). Shrinking core model and Arrhenius law were applied to illustrate the kinetics and mechanism between FeII(EDTA)–NO solution and Mn powder, suggesting that the solid–liquid reaction was fitted on chemical reaction control, and the activation energy was calculated as 43.0 kJ mol–1. The effects of main operating parameters, such as precipitant concentration, pH value, and temperature, were studied on Mn2+ recovery. Results indicated that the pseudo-second-order model could precisely describe the kinetics of Mn2+ recovery. Finally, according to Arrhenius and Eyring–Polanyi equations, the reaction activation energy, enthalpy of activation, and entropy of activation for Mn2+ recovery were calculated as 17.25 kJ mol–1, 14.55 kJ mol–1, and 252.07 J (k mol)−1, respectively.

Enhanced photocatalytic NO removal and toxic NO2 production inhibition over ZIF-8-derived ZnO nanoparticles with controllable amount of oxygen vacancies

Pengfei Zhu,Xiaohe Yin,Xinhua Gao,Guohui Dong,Jingkun Xu,Chuanyi Wang

The controlled introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in photocatalysts has been demonstrated to be an efficient approach for improving the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and thus, for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. In this study, a two-step calcination method where ZIF-8 was used as the precursor was explored for the synthesis of ZIF-8-derived ZnO nanoparticles with gradient distribution of OVs. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements indicated that the concentration of OVs in the samples depended on the temperature treatment process. Ultraviolet–visible spectra supported that the two-step calcined samples presented excellent light-harvesting ability in the ultraviolet-to-visible light range. Moreover, it was determined that the two-step calcined samples presented superior photocatalytic performance for the removal of NO , and inhibited the generation of NO 2 . These properties could be attributed to the contribution of the OVs present in the two-step calcined samples to their photocatalytic performance. The electrons confined by the OVs could be transferred to O 2 to generate superoxide radicals, which could oxidize NO to the final product, nitrate. In particular, the NO removal efficiency of Z 350-400 (which was a sample first calcined at 350 °C for 2 h, then at 400 °C for 1 h) was 1.5 and 4.6 times higher than that of Z 400 (which was one-step directly calcined at 400 °C) and commercial ZnO, respectively. These findings suggested that OV-containing metal oxides that derived from metal-organic framework materials hold great promise as highly efficient photocatalysts for the removal of NO.

Promoting effect of Cu and Mn doping on the Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

Yuheng Qiao,Zhenzhen Guan,Mengyan Zhang,Gan Chen,Shifeng Zhou,Hailong Liu,Jiang Wu,Ruitang Guo,Weiguo Pan,Fangqin Li,Ping He

In this paper, a series of Fe-based catalysts with Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) as supports were synthesized using the sol–gel method to obtain the Fe/ZSM-5, Mn-Fe/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were examined and characterized via catalytic activity testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results showed that the Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst had the best catalytic performance compared with the other catalysts. In addition, Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 all exhibited excellent stability as well as good tolerance to SO 2 & H 2 O under the experimental conditions. Further characterization results showed that with co-doping of Cu and Mn, the amount of Mn 4+ , Cu + , Fe 3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen (O β ) on the surface of Fe/ZSM-5 increased, promoting the catalytic performance. The DRIFT studies revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism on the surface of the Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst. The Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst is a good candidate for NH 3 -SCR both in high reactivity and outstanding stability.
