A High Rate and Stable Hybrid Li/Na-Ion Battery Based on a Hydrated Molten Inorganic Salt Electrolyte

Zhengying Wang,Yue Xu,Jian Peng,Mingyang Ou,Peng Wei,Chun Fang,Qing Li,Jiang Huang,Jiantao Han,Yunhui Huang

Taking into the consideration safety, environmental impact, and economic issue, the construction of aqueous batteries based on aqueous electrolyte has become an indispensable technical option for large-scale electrical energy storage. The narrow electrochemical window is the main problem of conventional aqueous electrolyte. Here, an economical room-temperature inorganic hydrated molten salt (RTMS) electrolyte with a large electrochemical stability window of 3.1 V is proposed. Compared with organic fluorinated molten salts, RTMS is composed of lithium nitrate hydrate and sodium nitrate with much lower cost. Based on the RTMS electrolyte, a hybrid Li/Na-ion full battery is fabricated from cobalt hexacyanoferrate cathode (NaCoHCF) and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) anode. The full cell with the RTMS electrolyte exhibits a fantastic performance with high capacity of 139 mAh g −1 at 1 C, 90 mAh g −1 at 20 C, and capacity retention of 94.7% over 500 cycles at 3 C. The excellent performances are contributed to the unique properties of RTMS with a large electrochemical window, solvated H 2 O free and high mobility of Li + , which exhibits excellent Li-ions insertion and extraction capacity of NaCoHCF. This RTMS cell provides a new economic choice for large-scale energy storage.

Enhanced Ionic/Electronic Transport in Nano-TiO2/Sheared CNT Composite Electrode for Na+ Insertion-based Hybrid Ion-Capacitors

Sainan Luo,Tao Yuan,Luke Soule,Jiafeng Ruan,Yahui Zhao,Dalin Sun,Junhe Yang,Meilin Liu,Shiyou Zheng

Ion-insertion capacitors show promise to bridge the gap between supercapacitors of high power densities and batteries of high energy densities. While research efforts have primarily focused on Li + -based capacitors (LICs), Na + -based capacitors (SICs) are theoretically cheaper and more sustainable. Owing to the larger size of Na + compared to Li + , finding high-rate anode materials for SICs has been challenging. Herein, an SIC anode architecture is reported consisting of TiO 2 nanoparticles anchored on a sheared-carbon nanotubes backbone (TiO 2 /SCNT). The SCNT architecture provides advantages over other carbon architectures commonly used, such as reduced graphene oxide and CNT. In a half-cell, the TiO 2 /SCNT electrode shows a capacity of 267 mAh g −1 at a 1 C charge/discharge rate and a capacity of 136 mAh g −1 at 10 C while maintaining 87% of initial capacity over 1000 cycles. When combined with activated carbon (AC) in a full cell, an energy density and power density of 54.9 Wh kg −1 and 1410 W kg −1 , respectively, are achieved while retaining a 90% capacity retention over 5000 cycles. The favorable rate capability, energy and power density, and durability of the electrode is attributed to the enhanced electronic and Na + conductivity of the TiO 2 /SCNT architecture.

Solubility Measurement and Thermodynamic Modeling of Solid–Liquid Equilibria in the MCl–M2B4O7–H2O (M = Li, Na) Systems

Lan Yang,Lingzong Meng,Tongjie Ge,Dan Li,Tianlong Deng,Yafei Guo

The solubilities in the MCl–M2B4O7–H2O (M = Li, Na) systems at 323.15 K were studied with the isothermal solid–liquid equilibrium method. Both the phase diagrams in the above systems belong to the simple eutectic type. Combining the Pitzer binary parameters of LiCl and NaCl obtained from the literatures, the lacking Pitzer binary parameters of Li2B4O5(OH)4 and Na2B4O5(OH)4, Pitzer mixing parameters θCl–,B4O5(OH)42–, ψLi+,Cl–,B4O5(OH)42–, and ψNa+,Cl–,B4O5(OH)42–, and the solubility product constants of Li2B4O5(OH)4·H2O and Na2B4O5(OH)4·8H2O at 298.15 and 323.15 K were fitted with the experimental solubility data by the Pitzer model. The agreement between the experimental water activities and calculated results with parameters fitted with solubilities in the system LiCl–Li2B4O7–H2O at 298.15 K shows that the parameters fitted with solubilities are reliable. The comparison between the experimental and calculated solubilities of the two systems at 298.15 and 323.15 K shows that calculated solubility data are in agreement with 0.03 of experimental results in the two systems.

Synthesis of Na-X zeolite from low aluminum coal fly ash: Characterization and high efficient As(V) removal

Ting Yang,Caiyun Han,Hang Liu,Liu Yang,Dekun Liu,Jie Tang,Yongming Luo

Na-X zeolite was successfully prepared from low aluminum coal fly ash (LACFA) via fusion-hydrothermal treatment. The influence of various synthesis parameters was investigated, including aluminum additives (AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O, Al(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, AlF 3 ·3H 2 O and NaAlO 2 ), dosages of NaAlO 2 , weight ratio of LACFA/NaOH, crystallization temperature and time. The results indicated that the addition of Al species played a key role in the synthesis process of purity Na-X zeolite, and the corresponding relative crystallinity of the obtained samples was in the order of Na-X zeolite (Al)  ≫ Na-X zeolite (Cl)  > Na-X zeolite (N)  > Na-X zeolite (F) (Here, “Al”, “Cl”, “N” and “F” represent NaAlO 2 , AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O, Al(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O and AlF 3 ·3H 2 O, respectively). And the optimal operating conditions were: the weight ratio of LACFA/NaOH = 0.83, short crystallization time 360 min, low crystallization temperature 90 °C and 0.038 mol NaAlO 2 . Additionally, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transforms Infrared (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to determine the resultant samples. Based on the results of As(V) adsorption experiment, the experimental data was suitable fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm model, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 27.79 mg/g at pH = 2.14. The kinetics studies suggested that “surface reaction” was the rate-determining step of adsorption process, and the thermodynamics studies indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. These results deemed that the LACFA was suitable for preparing Na-X zeolite (Al) , and the obtained Na-X zeolite (Al) was served as a promising adsorbent to remove As(V) from acid wastewater.

A long cycle-life Na-Mg hybrid battery with a chlorine-free electrolyte based on Mg(TFSI)2

Jing Zeng,Zulai Cao,Yang Yang,Yunhui Wang,Yueying Peng,Yiyong Zhang,Jing Wang,Jinbao Zhao

The commercial applications of rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are hindered by the slow diffusion kinetic of Mg 2+ ions in cathode materials. To overcome this problem, we design a new Na-Mg hybrid battery with the NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @Carbon (NTP@C) nanoparticles as a cathode material, the Mg metal as an anode and the Mg(TFSI) 2  + NaBH 4 - triglyme/1,2-Dimethoxyethane (DME) as a hybrid electrolyte. For the first time, the Mg(TFSI) 2 is applied as a Mg 2+ ions source in the chlorine-free Na-Mg hybrid electrolyte with NaBH 4 as both Na + ions source and moisture scavenger. The NTP@C/Mg hybrid battery shows excellent electrochemical performance. The corresponding average capacity decay after 1000 cycles is only 0.004% and 0.008% per cycle at 2 C and 10 C, respectively. Even at 20 C, about 60 mAh g −1 can be obtained after 26000 cycles. The impressive capacity retention of 93.7% and 90.2% can be obtained at 5 and 10 C, respectively. The excellent electrochemical performance of the hybrid battery confirms the feasibility using Mg(TFSI) 2 in the chlorine-free hybrid electrolyte for long term cycle. The developed NTP@C/Mg hybrid battery possesses the advantages of excellent electrochemical performances, good safety and low cost, making it promising for the commercial applications, especially for the large-scale energy storages.

Adsorptive removal of organic chloride from model jet fuel by Na-LSX zeolite: Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies

Rui Ma,Jianhua Zhu,Bencheng Wu,Xiaohui Li

The commercial Na-loaded low-silica X zeolite (Na-LSX) was used as adsorbent for the removal of organic chloride compound (5-chloro-2-methylaniline) from model jet fuel. The Na-LSX adsorbent was characterized by XRD, BET, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, and XRF, respectively. A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption performance of organic chloride onto Na-LSX zeolite by batch adsorption experiments. In the batch experiments, some key operational parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, initial concentration of organic chloride in model jet sample as well as the dosage of adsorbent were investigated. Equilibrium isotherms were analyzed by using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) adsorption models. The pseudo-first-order, the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models were used to fit the kinetics data. The results revealed that Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the experimental data than other isotherms. And it was also found that the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation well. The thermodynamic analysis results indicated that the adsorption process was an endothermic, feasible and spontaneous process under the specified conditions. Above mentioned investigation results implied that the Na-LSX zeolite would be an effective adsorbent for adsorption removal of organic chloride from distillate of crude oil.

Preparation by Poly(Acrylic Acid) Sol–Gel Method and Thermoelectric Properties of γ-Na x CoO2 Bulk Materials

Li Xiaoyu,Zhang Li,Tang Xinfeng

γ-Na x CoO 2 single-phase powders have been synthesized by a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) sol–gel (SG) method, and γ-Na x CoO 2 bulk ceramic fabricated using spark plasma sintering. The effects of the PAA concentration on the sample phase composition and morphology were investigated. The thermoelectric properties of the γ-Na x CoO 2 bulk ceramic were also studied. The results show that the PAA concentration did not significantly affect the crystalline phase of the product. However, agglomeration of γ-Na x CoO 2 crystals was suppressed by the steric effect of PAA. The Na x CoO 2 bulk ceramic obtained using the PAA SG method had higher crystallographic anisotropy, better chemical homogeneity, and higher density than the sample obtained by solid-state reaction (SSR), leading to improved thermoelectric performance. The PAA SG sample had power factor (in-plane PF =  σS 2 ) of 0.61 mW m −1  K −2 and dimensionless figure of merit ( ZT ) along the in-plane direction of 0.19 at 900 K, higher than for the SSR sample (in-plane PF = 0.51 mW m −1  K −2 , in-plane ZT  = 0.17). These results demonstrate that a simple and feasible PAA SG method can be used for synthesis of Na x CoO 2 ceramics with improved thermoelectric properties.

Effect of film multi-scale structure on the water vapor permeability in hydroxypropyl starch (HPS)/Na-MMT nanocomposites

Siyuan Liu,Panfu Cai,Xiaoxi Li,Ling Chen,Lin Li,Bing Li

To improve the water vapor resistance of starch-based films, Na-MMT (Na-montmorillonite) as nanofillers were fabricated into hydroxypropyl starch and the multi-scale structural changes (including intermolecular interaction, short-range conformation, long-range ordered structure and the aggregated structure of the film) were revealed. The elongation of the water vapor molecule pathway by tortuous path is generally recognized as the main reason for the improvement of water resistance. However this study observed the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP) was at the 3% Na-MMT/hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) ratio instead of 5% even nanofillers were partially exfoliated at both ratio. Except for the “tortuous path” caused by nanofillers, this observation proposed that the short-range conformation of HPS chains, long-range ordered structure and the aggregated structure likely influenced the water barrier property. The relationship between WVP and multi-scale structure of the film was investigated. The results suggested that a good balance of short-range conformationin the amorphous region, long-range ordered structure and the aggregated structure of the film was required for the improvement of water vapor barrier property.

Hexagonal β-Na(Y,Yb)F4 based core/shell nanorods: epitaxial growth, enhanced and tailored up-conversion emission

Jing Yan,Honghu Yao,Junhao Li,Shiman He,Qili Wu,Xianfeng Yang,Wasim Ullah Khan,Jianxin Shi,Mingmei Wu

To meet the increasing requirement, much effort has been devoted to enhance the emission intensity and tailor the emission color of rare earth phosphors. However, limited contributions have been made to the up-conversion (UC) of nanorods by complete epitaxial growth on each facet to achieve this requirement. In this study, we propose a facile epitaxial growth route to grow anisotropic hexagonal β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+@β-NaYbF4:Er3+, β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+@β-NaYF4, and β-NaYbF4:Er3+@β-NaYF4 core/shell nanorods, which were realized by adding hexagonal β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ or β-NaYbF4:Er3+ nanorods as a core-nanostructure into a solution containing cubic α-NaYbF4:Er3+ or α-NaYF4 nanoparticles as the shell-precursor. During epitaxial growth-induced phase transformation, the precursor nanoparticles disappeared gradually in the solution and consequently corresponding β-phased shell yielded on each outer facet of each β-phased nanorod core. Eventually, the nanorod core was covered completely with a uniformly grown β-NaYbF4:Er3+ or β-NaYF4 shell. The UC emission of either β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ or β-NaYbF4:Er3+ core can be enhanced by the outer shell due to the decrease in the number of surface defects. In addition, tailored UC emissions could be obtained by controlling the shell components and thickness, typically in the core/shell nanorods of β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+@β-NaYbF4:Er3+. The tunable colors with improved emission in these core/shell nanorods may find wider applications in multicolor labeling and anti-counterfeiting.

Deciphering the structural and kinetic factors in lithium titanate for enhanced performance in Li+/Na+ dual-cation electrolyte

Yue Chen,Shaohua Zhang,Dongni Zhao,Zhixian You,Yubiao Niu,Liqiang Zeng,Nagarathinam Mangayarkarasi,Oleg V. Kolosov,Jianming Tao,Jiaxin Li,Yingbin Lin,Yongping Zheng,Long Zhang,Zhigao Huang

The widespread application of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) anode in lithium-ion batteries has been hindered by its relatively low energy density. In this study, we investigated the capacity enhancement mechanism of LTO anode through the incorporation of Na + cations in an Li + -based electrolyte (dual-cation electrolyte). LTO thin film electrodes were prepared as conductive additive-free and binder-free model electrodes. Electrochemical performance assessments revealed that the dual-cation electrolyte boosts the reversible capacity of the LTO thin film electrode, attributable to the additional pseudocapacitance and intercalation of Na + into the LTO lattice. Operando Raman spectroscopy validated the insertion of Li + /Na + cations into the LTO thin film electrode, and the cation migration kinetics were confirmed by ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which revealed that the incorporation of Na + reduces the activation energy of cation diffusion within the LTO lattice and improves the rate performance of LTO thin film electrodes in the dual-cation electrolyte. Furthermore, the interfacial charge transfer resistance in the dual-cation electrolyte, associated with ion de-solvation processes and traversal of the cations in the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, are evaluated using the distribution of relaxation time, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our approach of performance enhancement using dual-cation electrolytes can be extrapolated to other battery electrodes with sodium/lithium storage capabilities, presenting a novel avenue for the performance enhancement of lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

Low-cost shape-control synthesis of porous carbon film on β″-alumina ceramics for Na-based battery application

Yingying Hu,Zhaoyin Wen,Xiangwei Wu,Jun Jin

Porous carbon films with tunable pore structure to modify the β″-alumina electrolyte surface are fabricated through a low-cost and direct wet chemistry method with glucose and poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) as precursors. FTIR analysis confirms the effective connection between the carbohydrate and the pore-forming agent PMMA through hydrogen bonds . The experimental results indicate that the structural parameters of the porous carbon films, including mean pore size and film thickness, can be tuned simply by adjusting the amount of PMMA in the glucose/PMMA composite. This soft-template-assisted method could be readily extended to modify any other ceramic surfaces. The porous carbon films are demonstrated to greatly improve the wettability of the β″-alumina ceramics by molten sodium . Na/β″-alumina/Na cells are used to investigate the interfacial properties between sodium and the β″-alumina electrolyte. The results obtained at 350 °C reveal that the polarization behavior of the cell is alleviated by the porous coating . This work represents a successful method to coat ceramics with porous carbon and offers a promising solution to overcome the polarization problems of the sodium/β″-alumina interface in Na-based batteries .

Thermal Enhancement of Upconversion in Sub-10 nm Yb3+/Er3+/Na+ Tridoped Cs2ZrF6 Nanocrystals for Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Changhe Hu,Xiao Li,Wenfeng Xie,Jie Liu,Huhui Fu,Yaning Zhang,Jingbing Lu,Qi Xiong,Yuanqi Qian,M. Liu

Alkaline zirconium fluorides (A x Zr y F x+y , A = Li, Na, and K), featuring unique crystallographic structures, have recently emerged as a class of attractive hosts for fabricating lanthanide (Ln 3+ )-doped upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) that exhibited distinct morphology, upconversion luminescence (UCL) performance, and physicochemical property. In this paper, for the first time the controlled preparation of Yb 3+ /Er 3+ -doped UCNCs is reported based on the trigonal Cs 2 ZrF 6 host, leading to tunable morphology and size of the resulting UCNCs by varying the reaction temperature and time. By further incorporating Na + ions into the Cs 2 ZrF 6 crystal lattice, sub-10 nm Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Na + tridoped UCNCs with highly improved crystallinity and thus greatly enhanced UCL intensity are obtained. Moreover, these resulting UCNCs display abnormal thermal enhancement of UCL over a temperature range from 333 to 493 K, enabling the fabrication of supersensitive luminescent nanothermometers for temperature sensing. Based on the luminescence intensity ratio of two nonthermally coupled levels (i.e., 4 F 9/2 and 2 H 11/2 ) of Er 3+ , the as-prepared Cs 2 ZrF 6 :Yb/Er/Na UCNCs exhibit an extremely large absolute sensitivity of 177.3% K −1 and a considerably high relative sensitivity of 1.52% K −1 at 333 K. These results unambiguously demonstrate that Cs 2 ZrF 6 is a suitable host material for preparing small-sized Ln 3+ -doped UCNCs as nanothermometer for high-performance ratiometric temperature sensing.
