Hydrogenation of CO 2 to methane is a feasible solution to the growing global environmental and energy challenges. Nickel-based catalysts are efficient and cost effective for CO 2 methanation. Hernin, we synthesized Mn-promoted Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with facilitated CO 2 methanation and elucidated the crucial role of Mn. After Mn doping, NiMn/Al 2 O 3 catalysts showed improved NiO dispersion. Subsequently, H 2 reduction and CO 2 methanation treatments resulted in reduction of NiO and MnO 2 into Ni and MnO, and incorporation of Ni 2+ into MnO lattice, forming NiMnO x and creating numerous Ni-NiMnO x interfaces. The abundant oxygen vacancies from NiMnO x could enhance CO 2 activation. Moreover, oxygen vacancies at the interface also promote electron transfer from Ni and MnO, leading to electron-poor Ni nanoparticles and thus significantly promoting the *CO methanation. Ultimately, the electron-poor Ni nanoparticles and abundant oxygen vacancies at the Ni-NiMnO x interface jointly facilitate CO 2 methanation.

Hydrophobic metallic coatings have garnered significant scientific and industrial interest due to their exceptional mechanical durability and extensive application potential. A critical yet not fully understood phenomenon associated with certain metallic surfaces is the spontaneous and reversible transition from an initial hydrophilic state to a hydrophobic state over time. This study aims to elucidate the physicochemical mechanisms underlying the time-dependent wettability transition. The Ni based alloy coating, characterized by an intricate, rough hierarchical structure, was successfully fabricated on 304 stainless steel (SS) substrates through electrodeposition. The temporal evolution of the coating's wetting behavior was systematically monitored, confirming a transition from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity following aging in ambient air. To disentangle the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon, plasma cleaning was employed to systematically remove adsorbed airborne hydrocarbons from the coating surface. Comparative X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the surfaces before and after plasma treatment revealed a substantial reduction in the atomic ratio of airborne hydrocarbon groups (from 79.2 % to 62.7 %), accompanied by a notable increase in lattice oxygen content. These findings demonstrate that the observed wettability transition is a multifaceted process arising from synergistic effects involving both physical adsorption of environmental hydrocarbons and concurrent chemical changes occurring on the coating surface. The interaction between adsorbed hydrocarbon molecules and lattice oxygen has been identified as a key driver for the gradual evolution of surface wettability. Collectively, these insights enhance the understanding of dynamic interfacial behaviors exhibited by metallic coatings and establish a fundamental theoretical framework for rational design and optimization of stable hydrophobic metallic surfaces.

A bimetallic Ni-Pt catalyst (6Ni-Pt-HMS) was designed for the dehydrogenation of 1,2-cyclohexanediol (CHD) to catechol. The hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) as support, loaded with platinum and nickel by one-pot and incipient-wetness impregnation method, respectively. [Ni(en) 3 ](NO 3 ) 2 is used as the precursor of nickel. The physi-cochemical properties of the catalysts were examined by XRD, BET, SEM and TEM techniques. The effect of ethylenediamine on nickel dispersion during impregnation was studied by comparing with the traditional precursor (nickel nitrate). FTIR and TGA results showed that the presence of ethylenediamine modifies the behavior of nickel during impregnation and calcination . The activity and stability of the catalysts were evaluated on a fixed-bed, revealing the influence of mesoporous structure, ethylenediamine, and platinum on reaction. The 6Ni-Pt-HMS catalyst, with the conversion of CHD is 100 %, the selectivity of catechol as high as 99.7 % with the liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) is 9 h −1 , and a long-term stability. The deactivation mechanism of the spent catalyst was analyzed by BET, TGA, SEM, TEM-EDX and ICP-OES.

In this paper, a series of bimetallic catalysts with different Ni/Co ratios were prepared by co-impregnation method for application in methane dry reforming reaction. The effects of different Ni/Co ratios on the catalyst performance were investigated. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, H 2 -TPR, TG, TEM and FTIR. The results showed that after the introduction of a certain amount of Co, the synergistic effect between Ni and Co enhanced the active component-carrier interaction, thus improving the dispersion of the active component of the catalyst, reducing the particle size of the metal, and increasing the activity of the catalyst. Meanwhile, the mechanistic study showed that the introduction of Co species with strong oxygen affinity facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies. It makes the catalysts contain higher lattice oxygen and carbonate species, which was conducive to the elimination of carbon accumulation, thus improving the stability of catalysts. Therefore, the 10Ni-8Co-10Y/WC-AC catalyst exhibited excellent dry reforming of methane (DRM) performance at a Ni/Co ratio of 5:4. The conversions of CO 2 and CH 4 were 95 % and 88 % at 800 °C under atmospheric pressure, respectively.

The creation of inexpensive, high-performance catalysts to reduce the overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process is critical for the electrolysis of water for hydrogen production. Therefore, we applied a one-step hydrothermal method using cation exchange reaction (CER) to prepare Fe-doped and interfacial Ru nanoclusters co-engineered Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets directly grafted on Ni foam (Ru@Fe-Ni(OH) 2 /NF) for OER process. Results of electrochemical tests reveal that Ru@Fe-Ni(OH) 2 /NF has excellent OER activity, and its overpotential (η) is only 266.4 mV when the current density is 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution, even lower than that of commercial OER catalyst RuO 2 (355 mV). The Tafel slope also decreases from 133.8 mV dec −1 for pristine Ni(OH) 2 /NF material to 24.1 mV dec −1 for Ru@Fe-Ni(OH) 2 /NF, indicating the higher charge transfer rates and fastest kinetics for water oxidation. At an overpotential of 300 mV the optimal turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.062 s −1 for Ru@Fe-Ni(OH) 2 /NF is achieved compared to that of Ni(OH) 2 /NF (0.014 s −1 , NN), demonstrating the fast reaction kinetics of the as-prepared electrocatcalyst. After 24 h stability test, the catalytic activity of Ru@Fe-Ni(OH) 2 /NF was only attenuated by 2 %, showing excellent OER stability and durability. Our results show that we have successfully developed an efficient OER catalyst for green and efficient electrocatalytic hydrolysis to produce H 2 and O 2 , providing a promising method for clean H 2 production.

Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia driven by clean energy is expected to realize the supply of ammonia for distributed production of industry and agriculture. Here, nickel nanoparticles and nickel in the form of single atoms were simultaneously anchored on the electrochemically active carrier BCN matrix through a structured domain strategy, which realized a high-efficiency, high-value-added, conversion of nitrate in sewage. Specifically, the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NIRR) driven by BCN@Ni in alkaline media achieves an ammonia yield rate as high as 2320.2 μg h −1 cm −2 (at −0.5 V vs RHE), and Faraday efficiency as high as 91.15% (at −0.3 V vs RHE). Even in neutral and acidic media, the ammonia yield rates of NIRR driven by BCN@Ni are as high as 1904.2 μg h −1 cm −2 and 2057.4 μg h −1 cm −2 , respectively (at −0.4 V vs RHE). The 15 NO 3 - isotope labeling experiment verified that the recorded ammonia all came from the electrochemical reduction of NO 3 – on BCN@Ni. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that both nano-Ni and single-atom Ni in BCN@Ni have the ability to electrochemically convert NO 3 – into NH 3 , and that the addition of BCN can further promote the NIRR on Ni.

The production of high-purity hydrogen using surplus electrical energy and abundant water resources has immense potential in mitigating the fossil energy crisis, as hydrogen fuel holds clean, pollution-free, and high-energy characteristics. However, the practical application of large-scale hydrogen production from water faces challenges such as high overpotentials, sluggish dynamics, and limited electrocatalytic lifetime associated with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we fabricated the sandwich structure of a Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene)/Ni (Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @PEDOT/Ni) electrode and employed a strong magnet to obtain a magnetic electrode capable of achieving high-activity and durability for HER. Electrochemical analysis reveals that the activated magnetic electrode displays a significantly reduced overpotential and an extended electrocatalytic lifetime of 10 days. Notably, its stability is higher than that of non-magnetic Ni/Fe 3 O 4 /Ni and Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @PEDOT/Ni electrodes, primarily due to the support from magnetic force and the protective PEDOT layer. Moreover, the minute atomized droplets can form the H 2 O 2 species in a moist environment, facilitating the formation of the NiO layer on the Ni surface, which plays a vital role in boosting catalytic activity. In conclusion, our magnetic electrode strategy, combined with the emergence of the NiO layer, offers valuable insights for the development of advanced HER electrodes.

The development of self-supporting electrodes that exhibited both high efficiency and good durability remained a challenge in the field of hydrogen energy utilisation. Here, we designed a self-supporting 3D hierarchical porous electrode by filling carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loaded with Ni–P alloy into the framework of nickel foam (NF). Firstly, CNTs were decorated with a catalytically active Ni–P alloy via electroless plating (Ni–P@CNTs). Then, the Ni–P@CNTs were filled and anchored onto the framework of NF via electroplating to synthesise a self-supporting electrode (Ni–P@CNTs/NF). The Ni–P@CNTs/NF exhibited an excellent catalytic performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH electrolyte, with an overpotential of 53 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 101.56 mV dec −1 and excellent long-term durability. This facile and effective strategy might provide a new path to the design of self-supporting electrodes with enhanced HER catalytic.

In this study, a series of Ni-CeO 2 /TS-1 (Titanium Silicalite-1) catalysts were synthesized for dry reforming of methane (DRM). Among them, 5Ni-10CeO 2 /TS-1 exhibited the highest catalytic performance with 89 % CH 4 and 93 % CO 2 conversions, 4.81 mol CH4 ·g Ni -1 ·h −1 and 4.99 mol CO2 ·g Ni -1 ·h −1 specific activities, 95.5 % H 2 /CO ratio after 50 h, accompanied by the good stability with 2.9 % CH 4 and 2.3 % CO 2 activity loss within 100 h. Combined with various characterizations, the structure–function relationship was also investigated. For the physical and morphological analysis, it was indicated that the appropriate CeO 2 content could effectively diminish, disperse the Ni nanoparticles, and maintain MFI backbone structure. For the electronic structure, the introduced CeO 2 could improve the amount and strength of the surface Ni-O-X (Ti or Ce) species by changing the interaction among Ni nanoparticles, TS-1 and CeO 2 . It led to more Ni nanoparticles in stronger electron-deficient state, as well as more medium-strength basic sites, favoring for the activation of CH 4 and CO 2 . However, Ni nanoparticles would be covered when excessive CeO 2 was introduced, preventing the exposure of the active sites. Therefore, only the suitable CeO 2 in the catalysts could significantly improve catalytic performance for DRM with long-term stability. Furthermore, the good anti-sintering and anti-coking properties of 5Ni-10CeO 2 /TS-1 were mainly dependent on the optimal amount of surface Ni-O-X species with high strength. In-situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy) analysis demonstrated that the introduced CeO 2 could help catalyst favor for activating CH 4 and CO 2 molecules, and inhibiting the CH 4 overcracking and carbon accumulation, confirmed by the long-term measurement and structure analysis of spent catalysts.

The increasing requirements for wearable and portable electronics are driving the interests of high performance fiber supercapacitor. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is broadly used in electrode materials, owing to the adjustability of components and the unique lamellar structure. However, limited active sites and poor electrical conductivity hinder its applications. Herein, the core–shell heterostructured Ni(OH) 2 @activation Zn-Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (Ni(OH) 2 @A-ZnCoNi-LDH) electrode was fabricated by loading pseudocapacitance material on the A-ZnCoNi-LDH to improve the electrochemical performance. Significantly, benefits from the synergistic effect of the multi-metal ions and the core–shell heterostructure, the electrodes demonstrated a capacitance of 2405 mF·cm −2 at 1 mA·cm −2 . Furthermore, Ni(OH) 2 @A-ZnCoNi-LDH was used as the core electrode and carbon nanotube (CNT) film coated with Fe 2 O 3 @reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was wrapped around the core electrode to assemble coaxial fiber asymmetric supercapacitor, which illustrated an ultrahigh energy density of 177.7 µWh·cm −2 at 0.75 mW·cm −2 . In particular, after consecutive charging and discharging 7000 cycles, the capacitance retention of the device was 95 %, indicating the excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the device with high flexibility can be woven into textiles in different shapes. The fabricated device has an excellent development prospect as an energy source in wearable electronic devices.

A concentrated solar reaction device has been designed for the solar-driven photothermal CO2 reverse water–gas shift reaction, in which solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency would be up to 26% via a concentrated solar panel. Meanwhile, a special photothermal Ni–C–In catalyst (Ni/C–In2O3) with interstitial C, the In3Ni2 intermetallic compound, and disordered Ni clusters has been synthesized. As a result, the SO2-tolerant Ni/C–In2O3 catalyst exhibits an outstanding solar-driven photothermal catalytic performance (near thermodynamic limitation) with 100% CO selectivity and a 20.96 mmol gcat–1 h–1 CO production rate for solar-driven CO2 hydrogenation under concentrated solar irradiation (around 1521.9 mW/cm2) even sunlight without external heating. The incorporation of interstitial C and exposed Ni clusters in the Ni–C–In intermetallic catalyst could strengthen intensive solar light absorption. Moreover, quasi in situ XPS and DFT theoretical calculation results validate that asymmetric interaction between interstitial C and the Ni-cluster not only effectually regulates the electronic structure of the Ni–C–In intermetallic catalyst but also greatly optimizes the activation of H2 and CO2 molecules and the energy barriers of key reaction dynamics (HCOO* formation and dehydrogenation) in the RWGS reaction. Accordingly, this study provides a promising strategy for the electronic structure modification of photothermal functional catalysts with C modification to boost CO2 hydrogenation, putting forward an important step toward practical solar-to-fuel production with concentrated natural sunlight.
