Concerning chemical hazards, natural materials-based fabrication is highly praised for their safer and environmental-friendly fabrication. In this study, Au and Pd were modified on Fe nanoparticles , which was reduced by tea polyphenols. The as-synthesized probe (Tp-Fe/AuPd), was applied for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detection. Physical characterizations showed that Au and Pd were successfully modified on the Fe nanoparticles surfaces. The electrochemical results showed that, Tp-Fe/AuPd demonstrated good anti-interference capacity, long-term stability and high sensitivity of 4.17 μA mM −1 cm −2 . Further, the probe can detect H 2 O 2 within concentration range of 0.1–10 mM, and an estimated limit of detection (LOD) of 9.53 mM, without the addition of enzymes or other extraneous materials.

Hydrogen (H 2 ) sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are promising for many applications such as a rocket propellant, industrial gas and the safety of storage. However, poor selectivity at low analyte concentrations, and independent response on high humidity limit the practical applications. Herein, we designed rGO-wrapped SnO 2 –Pd porous hollow spheres composite (SnO 2 –Pd@rGO) for high performance H 2 sensor. The porous hollow structure was from the carbon sphere template. The rGO wrapping was via self-assembly of GO on SnO 2 -based spheres with subsequent thermal reduction in H 2 ambient. This sensor exhibited excellently selective H 2 sensing performances at 390 °C, linear response over a broad concentration range (0.1–1000 ppm) with recovery time of only 3 s, a high response of ∼8 to 0.1 ppm H 2 in a minute, and acceptable stability under high humidity conditions (e. g. 80%). The calculated detection limit of 16.5 ppb opened up the possibility of trace H 2 monitoring. Furthermore, this sensor demonstrated certain response to H 2 at the minimum concentration of 50 ppm at 130 °C. These performances mainly benefited from the special hollow porous structure with abundant heterojunctions , the catalysis of the doped-PdO x , the relative hydrophobic surface from rGO, and the deoxygenation after H 2 reduction.

Electrochemical redox is an effective method to degrade halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs). Herein, highly dispersed Pd-polypyrrole (Pd-PPy) catalysts were synthesized by a facile one-step polymerization method. The morphology and phase structure of the catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical redox of 4-fluorophenol (4-FP) was conducted in a single-chamber reactor with Pd-PPy as a moveable catalyst. The effects of the initial solution pH, constant current, and supporting electrolyte on the degradation of 4-FP were investigated. The removal efficiency of 4-FP was 84.6% after 2 h under an initial solution pH of 2.5 and an applied current density of 2.0 mA/cm 2 . The mechanism of 4-FP degradation was inferred, including the defluorination of 4-FP on the cathode and oxidation of 4-FP and phenol on the anode. The degradation of 4-FP in the Pd-PPy-mediated reactor showed lower energy consumption and higher removal efficiency. The degradation efficiency of 4-FP had almost no change after 20 cycles of experiments, which indicates the good durability of the prepared Pd-PPy catalysts. Graphical abstract

Pd modified ZnIn 2 S 4 /P25 (Pd@ZnIn 2 S 4 /P25) heterostructures have been synthesized by hydrothermal and photo-reduction method. The H 2 evolution rate of optimal photocatalyst 0.5 %Pd modified 5ZnIn 2 S 4 /2P25 (0.5 %Pd@5ZnIn 2 S 4 /2P25) are approximately 9100 and 3693 μmol · g −1 h −1 under simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation with ethanol as the sacrificial agent, which are nearly 9 and 460 times higher than pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and P25, respectively. The promoted photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the strong electronic interaction between Pd modified ZnIn 2 S 4 (Pd@ZnIn 2 S 4 ) and P25, the improved transfer rate of photo-generated electrons and holes, the inhibited recombination of charge carriers, and the enhanced light harvesting. The results of photo-electrochemistry and EPR indicate that it is a Z-scheme photocatalytic system, in which the electrons accumulate on the conduct band of ZnIn 2 S 4 and the holes assemble on the valence band of P25. This work provides an effective method to construct highly efficient photocatalytic systems for solar H 2 generation.

It is of great significance to develop electrocatalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability for the electrosynthesis of H2O2. Here, we successfully prepare low-crystalline two-dimensional Pd metallene sulfide with isolated Pd sites and rich sulfur vacancies (L-PdS-Vs metallene) via a solvothermal method. The ultrathin two-dimensional structure, amorphous/crystalline heterophase structure, and plentiful sulfur vacancy of L-PdS-Vs metallene can provide sufficient active sites and a strong electronic effect. Moreover, sulfidation induces the isolation of Pd sites that can inhibit the dissociation of O–O bonds. As such, L-PdS-Vs metallene exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with high H2O2 selectivity (>90%) under a wide application potential. The average H2O2 productivity at 0.3 V is as high as 1.12 mol gcat–1 h–1, and the corresponding FE is over 90%. The sulfidation strategy has multiple advantages and provides an effective strategy for the design of high-performance 2e– ORR electrocatalysts.

Supported Pd catalysts show superior activities for olefin productions from alkynes through semi-hydrogenation reactions, but over-hydrogenation into alkanes highly decreases olefin selectivity. Using phenylacetylene semi-hydrogenation as a model reaction, here we explore the optimization approaches toward better Pd catalysts for alkyne semi-hydrogenation through investigating support effect and metal–support interactions. The results show that the states of Pd with supports can be tuned by varying oxide reducibility, loading ratios, and post-treatments. In our system, 0.06 wt.% Pd on rutile-TiO 2 nanorods shows the highest activity owing to the synergistic effects of single-atoms and clusters. Support reducibility can change the filling degrees of Pd 4d orbitals through varying interfacial bonding strengths, which further affect catalytic activity and selectivity.

RuO 2 has been considered a potential alternative to commercial IrO 2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to its superior intrinsic activity. However, its inherent structure dissolution in acidic environments restricts its commercial applications. In this study, we report a novel Pd-doped ruthenium oxide (Pd–RuO 2 ) nanosheet catalyst that exhibits improved activity and stability through a synergistic effect of Pd modulation of Ru electronic structure and the two-dimensional structure. The catalyst exhibits excellent performance, achieving an overpotential of only 204 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Impressively, after undergoing 8000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry testing, the overpotential merely decreased by 5 mV. The PEM electrolyzer with Pd 0.08 Ru 0.92 O 2 as an anode catalyst survived an almost 130 h operation at 200 mA cm −2 . To elucidate the underlying mechanisms responsible for the enhanced stability, we conducted an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, which reveals that the electron transfer from Pd to Ru effectively circumvents the over-oxidation of Ru, thus playing a crucial role in enhancing the catalyst's stability. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide compelling evidence that the introduction of Pd into RuO 2 effectively modulates electron correlations and facilitates the electron transfer from Pd to Ru, thereby preventing the over-oxidation of Ru. Additionally, the application of the two-dimensional structure effectively inhibited the aggregation and growth of nanoparticles, further bolstering the structural integrity of the catalyst.

Hydrogen storage in chemicals is regarded as one of the sustainable techniques for tackling the energy-related challenges. However, hydrogen production from ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB) is restricted by the inherent activity of metallic catalysts, which may be boosted by light irradiation. Herein, Pd-doped Co nanoparticles (NPs) were incorporated into a Zr-MOF composite composed of MXene-derived Ti3C2 nanosheets and UiO-66-NH2 (denoted as TUNS) by a double-solvent approach, obtaining a CoPd@TUNS composite. The optimized Co30Pd@TUNS composite exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for the complete dehydrogenation of AB within 0.6 min under 300 W Xe lamp light, with a high turnover frequency of 130.37 molH2 (molmetal)−1 min−1 at 298 K. The activity of Co30Pd@TUNS increased 10-fold under light irradiation as compared to that in the dark. For photocatalytic dehydrogenation, Co30Pd@TUNS was more active than Co30Pd@UiO-66-NH2 and Co30Pd/Ti3C2. Its excellent performance might be attributed to multiple factors including the photo-harvesting MOF generating electron–hole pairs, Ti3C2 nanosheets promoting the charge separation, and the Schottky effect facilitating electron migration to metal NPs for activating the substrate via an electron-deficient BH3 moiety, along with the attack of photogenerated hydroxyl radicals and water molecules. Moreover, the kinetic study manifested that AB dehydrogenation is a zero-order reaction with regard to the substrate. The great stability and recyclability of Co30Pd@TUNS was also confirmed after 5 runs. This study would widen a pathway for the design of an efficient MOF-based catalyst for hydrogen generation in the energy-related field.

Aromatic alcohols prepared by hydrogenation of aromatic ketones are an important kind of intermediate that are widely used in the production of fine chemicals. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered ideal alternatives to conventional heterogeneous catalysts due to their unique geometrical structure. Herein, we report the palladium SACs supported by titanium oxide (Pd1/TiO2 SACs) successfully synthesized via a simple and efficient ball milling process. In the hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol, Pd1/TiO2 SACs exhibit higher conversion and selectivity than Pdn/TiO2 nanoparticle catalysts. Also, Pd1/TiO2 SACs exhibit excellent hydrogenation for a range of compounds containing C═O bonds.

High-performance room-temperature hydrogen (H 2 ) sensors are the optimal choice for practical applications. Light excitation , especially visible light, is safer and requires less power compared to ultraviolet (UV) light. This makes it an effective method for achieving room temperature operation. In this study, different mass ratios of Pd-modified ZnO nanorods were synthesized using a combination of hydrothermal and impregnation methods, and their sensing performance to H 2 under visible light excitation was investigated. Material characterization results demonstrated that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Pd broadened the absorption in the visible light region, increasing the generation of high-energy hot electrons . Notably, the 2.5 wt% Pd/ZnO exhibited excellent sensing performance towards 5000 ppm H 2 at room temperature under visible light excitation, with a high response value of 5906.78. The LSPR effect and the catalytic activity of Pd nanoparticles significantly enhance the sensing performance of H 2 . Based on our current knowledge, there have been no explicit reports on the detection of H 2 using visible light excitation with Pd/ZnO, thus highlighting a new direction for the study of room temperature H 2 sensors.

Pd-based metallene is regarded as an efficient catalyst in the field of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) because of its fantastic physicochemical features. The morphological structure control, lattice strain engineering, and electronic structure modulation of Pd-based metallene are effective tactics to enhance its electrocatalytic performance. In this work, we fabricate atomically thin B-doped Pd metallene nanoribbons (B-Pd MNRs) for efficient alkaline ORR. The atomically thin nanoribbon structure of B-Pd MNRs can expose many surface atoms as catalytically active sites. Moreover, the incorporation of boron effectively induces the lattice expansion and modulates the electronic structure of Pd, which can synergistically weaken the adsorption of intermediate species on B-Pd MNRs. Therefore, the B-Pd MNRs display excellent activity and durability for ORR. This work opens an avenue to the synthesis of atomically thin heteroatom-doped metallene nanoribbons for energy electrocatalytic applications.

Bifunctional Pd/Hβ catalysts with uniformly distributed palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were successfully synthesized by a facile methanol-mediated weakly capping growth approach (WCGA). A series of Pd/Hβ catalysts with different metal loadings and Si/Al ratios were used for benzene hydroalkylation, and the identification of metal/acid matching balance over bifunctional Pd/Hβ toward benzene hydroalkylation performance was investigated. The obtained characterization and catalytic activity test results demonstrated that the weak acid site and Lewis acid site have greatly affected the benzene conversion, and the strong acid site as well as Brønsted acid site had more of an effect on the alkylation process. The best hydroalkylation performance was achieved by tuning the acid/metal molar ratio at 22.4 μmol of H+/μmol of exposed Pd with a high cyclohexylbenzene (CHB) selectivity of 51.7% at a benzene conversion of 63.4%, which is the best CHB yield currently obtained for all we know. In addition, the stability of Pd/Hβ catalysts was tested and compared with that prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) method, which showed good stability, and no obvious particle aggregation was found. This work provides guidance for exploring the construction of bifunctional catalysts and the balance of metal/acid sites.
