This work reported a facile method for fabricating multi-layered polydopamine (PDA) encapsulated AuAg@C@AuAg core/shell nanosphere with a hollow interior. During the synthetic process, the preliminary Ag@C nanosphere is easily covered by an AuAg/PDA hybrid layer through the in situ redox-oxidized polymerization to form the Ag-AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA precursor, in which the AuAg bimetallic nanocrystals are simultaneously obtained via the electrochemical substitution reaction. After etching the residue Ag core, the final AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA hybrid nanosphere is achieved and the inner AuAg shows a unique nanoframe-like nanostructure. The carbon shell plays an important role for the formation and structure evolution of the AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA, and the composition can be modulated by varying the polymerization process. Owing to the well distributed AuAg nanocrystals and inner AuAg nanoframes, the AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA shows better performance than Ag-AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA precursor in catalyzing 4-nitrophenol, and the rate constant (K) to catalyst weight ratio reaches as high as 3.63 min −1 •mg -1 . As a result, this work not only offers a hybrid bi-metallic nanocatalyst with excellent performance, but also has valuable implications for compositional modulation of hollow interior multi-layered nanostructure in adsorption, drug delivery, and nanocatalysis.

Membrane-based separations can improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact associated with conventional methods. However, conventional adsorbents encapsulate most of their functional sites in their dense structures, leading to issues of low selectivity and adsorption capacity. To overcome the above problems, the scalable basswood-based PDA/GO-embedded self-assembly membranes were prepared based a multilayer artemisinin (Ars)-imprinted nanocage (MA/SB-P/G-ESMs) for highly selective adsorption and transport to Ars. The double-layer imprinting strategy of graphene oxide based on polydopamine and κ-carrageenan using three-dimensional mesoporous basswood as the support membrane improved the effective imprinting platform. The final MA/SB-P/G-ESMs were prepared by a heat-initiated radical polymerization, acrylamide was used as a functional monomer to conveniently and efficiently form specific recognition sites on the membrane. Notably, the outcomes demonstrated that, despite interference with other rivals, MA/SB-P/G-ESMs displayed perfect rebinding selectivity ( λ = 2.67, 2.89, 2.35) and perm-selectivity ( β = 8.16, 5.43, 6.51) for Ars. The high regeneration rate (after 10 cycles, greater than93%) demonstrated the MA/SB-P/G-ESMs' practical application potential. The selective separation of Ars using the MA/SB-P/G-ESM preparation method showed substantial promise in this work.

Because of excellent insulation properties and thermal stability, meta-aramid paper can be commonly applied to a vast number of fields, like power systems. But poriferous and relatively lax structure of meta-aramid paper would limit its applications in high-voltage environment. This paper proposes a sandwich structure design to combine PDA@BNNS/PMIA film and meta-aramid paper with high breakdown strength. After coating with 6 wt% PDA@BNNS/PMIA solution, this kind of paper became more compact, so there were few pores in the paper and it further enhanced the mechanical and dielectric performances of specimens. The tensile strength in the cross direction increased from 31.3 to 40.5 MPa, and the performance in the machine direction was from 75.5 to 78.9 MPa. Furthermore, the breakdown strength of compound-coated paper achieved 55 kV/mm, which is much higher than meta-aramid paper. Additionally, compound-coated paper still remained outstanding thermal stability. Overall, our fabricated PDA@BNNS/PMIA compound-coated paper has excellent comprehensive properties, which provides a broad prospect for the applications in high-temperature and high-voltage transformers.

Room-temperature liquid metals are potential candidates for developing flexible and reconfigurable conductive composites. However, an auxiliary sintering process is required to rupture the oxide and organically modified layers on the liquid metal (LM) nanodroplets (NDs) surface to reactivate their conductive and fluidic properties, thereby forming a continuous conductive pathway inside the composite. However, such a destructive strategy leads to leakage of liquid metal and destruction of composite integrity. Here, the “solvent volatilization strategy” was introduced to cause the organic solvent within thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to rapidly volatilize and be actively degassed during the polymerization process, forming densely packed micron-scale cavities. The polydopamine (PDA)-modified eGaInSn NDs were uniformly distributed and anchored to the inner wall of the cavity, providing sufficient filling space for the stress-ruptured eGaInSn@PDA NDs. During the application of mechanical pressure, the composite gradually converted from a dielectric state to a conductive state and it was able to quickly and repeatedly self-healing to restore conductivity after fracturing. In particular, no liquid metal pump-out or leakage was observed on the composite surface even after applying an 8 MPa high stress. In addition, the composite embedded with a high fraction eGaInSn@PDA NDs still exhibited high flexibility and had excellent electromagnetic shielding and X-ray attenuation capabilities.

Flexible and self-healing conductive hydrogel, as a typical electronic skin with the function of transmitting sensory signals, has attracted remarkable attentions in the biomaterials field. However, the practical application of electronic skin has been severely limited owing to the potential bacterial infection threats. Here, in order to improve the antibacterial properties of electronic skin, a star-shaped polyetheramide (Tyr-PEAm) derived from L-tyrosine was synthesized and cross-linked into the hydrogel network. A compliant and self-healing conductive hydrogel (defined as PVA/PDA/Tyr-PEAm) was assembled from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polydopamine (PDA) and Tyr-PEAm. The hydrogel achieved a comprehensive performance of long-term antibacterial activity (the inhibition zones remained unchanged over 7 days), low hemolysis activity (hemolysis rate of 0.042 %), good conductivity and rapid self-healing ability (healing within 1 s). Therefore, the hydrogel could be used not only as a detection device to check normal skin, but also as the wound skin detection in real time. Furthermore, the good conductivity and rapid self-healing ability contributed to the hydrogel to detect various macro and micro movements of the human body, as well as to recycle as a new sensor. The PVA/PDA/Tyr-PEAm hydrogel that integrated intelligent signals and resisted bacterial infections exhibited broad application prospects in biomedical materials.

Immobilized angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) utilizes specific interaction between ACE and ACE inhibitors to screen drugs for hypertension therapy, but traditional immobilized ACE is insufficient to achieve satisfactory effect for the poor immobilization efficiency and stability. In this work, mesoporous ZIF-8 (mZIF-8) coated with polydopamine (PDA) was developed as an enzyme-immobilization platform for the first time. Molecular docking was used to study the mechanism of ACE induced mZIF-8 synthesis. The immobilized enzyme ACE@mZIF-8/PDA were shown to possess mesoporous structures with ACE encapsulation efficiency of ∼90%. Compared with the free enzyme, ACE@mZIF-8/PDA exhibited enhanced tolerance to temperature, pH, unfolding and proteolytic agents, with excellent reusability (maintained 82.29% ± 4.11% of initial activity after being reused 10 times) and storage stability (retaining 93.12% ± 3.271% residual activity after 30 days). Molecular docking research conformed ACE induced the triggered nucleation of MOFs via binding with MOFs precursors. Moreover, ACE@mZIF-8/PDA was used as high-performance adsorbent for enrichment of ACE inhibitory peptides. The noncompetitive inhibitory peptide GF-6 and competitive inhibitory peptide VPP could be captured synchronously, which avoided the loss of active substances. These results indicated that the ACE@mZIF-8/PDA provides an evolutionary platform for rapid screening of inhibitory peptides.

The utilization of near-infrared (NIR) light with strong photothermal effect in photo-Fenton or Fenton-like systems for the degradation of organic pollutants is always ignored. In this study, we have synthesized a novel photothermal Fenton-like catalyst (Co 3 O 4 /PDA) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of antibiotics. The Co 3 O 4 in the nanocomposite acts as a PMS activator, while unexpectedly, PDA was found to accelerate the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ . Both Co 3 O 4 and PDA are black-colored photothermal materials with excellent NIR absorption properties. During the degradation process, the light-to-heat conversion ability of Co 3 O 4 and PDA enables a higher temperature, which innovatively boosts the rate of PMS catalytic activation. Mechanistic studies revealed that the increased temperature effectively promotes the heterogeneous catalytic PMS activation by Co 3 O 4 /PDA. As a result, the Co 3 O 4 /PDA + PMS + NIR system exhibits greatly enhanced degradation performance. Furthermore, this degradation system demonstrates strong tolerance to different operation conditions, and the catalyst exhibits good stability in cycling tests. These results demonstrate the favorable application prospects of this photothermal Fenton-like system in environmental water remediation. The findings also contribute valuable insights towards the development of efficient strategies for the photothermal activation of PMS.

Developing high-performance MXene-based polymer nanocomposites through a biomimetic method has been a research hotspot. However, it is still an intractable challenge to achieve MXene-based polymer nanocomposites with efficient fire safety, excellent thermal conductivity, and enhanced mechanical properties. Here, inspired by the adhesion of mussels, the hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrid was fabricated by a self-assembly strategy and then employed to prepare epoxy resin (EP) nanocomposites. It has been found that MXene@PDA@CoFeOx can display excellent dispersion and interfacial compatibility in EP matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that only 2.0 wt% MXene@PDA@CoFeOx results in excellent thermal stability and char yield (31.29 wt%) of EP under a nitrogen atmosphere. Combustion tests show that the 2.0 wt% MXene@PDA@CoFeOx confers efficient fire safety to EP. Remarkably, the EP-2.0%MXene@PDA@CoFeOx can obtain an attractive UL-94 rating of V0. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), smoke factor (SF), and peak CO production rate (pCO) of EP-2.0%MXene@PDA@CoFeOx are dramatically decreased by 33.38%, 55.41%, and 36.84% in comparison to those of virgin EP, respectively. The efficient fire safety of EP nanocomposites is mainly attributed to the barrier effect, dilution effect, and catalytic carbonization effect of hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx. Furthermore, the MXene@PDA@CoFeOx enables EP to boast enhanced thermal conductivity (improved by 69.14%), impact strength (improved by 13.38%), and flexural strength (improved by 17.60%). This work offers a feasible biomimetic method for fabricating hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrids and preparing efficient fire-safe EP nanocomposites with excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical performance.

Nanomaterial-based antimicrobial strategies have emerged as powerful tools to combat microbial resistance, avoiding side effects of misusing antibiotics. In this work, the zinc oxide-based nanohybrid (designated as [email protected] ε-PL) as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents were fabricated in a facile two-step process. To be specific, ZnO was coated with near-infrared (NIR)-photoresponsive polydopamine (PDA), and then coupled with the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) (ε-poly- L -lysine, ε-PL). The as-prepared [email protected] ε-PL can effectively contact and capture bacteria, and then exhibit an excellent photothermal effect, i.e . , the temperature rises rapidly to 53.2 °C (100 μg/ml) under 808 nm NIR light irradiation for 10 min. The synergistic effect of ε-PL, ZnO and photothermal agent PDA contributes to the excellent antibacterial efficiency of [email protected] ε-PL (<100 μg/ml) with 808 nm irradiation, that is, 99.70% and 100.00% against Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli , E. coli ) and Gram-positive bacteria ( Staphyloccocus aureus , S. aureus ), respectively. Further experiments indicated the [email protected] ε-PL ultimately lead to bacterial death by disrupting cell integrity, leaking of intracellular components (e.g., nucleic acids). Moreover, [email protected] ε-PL can effectively remove 70.84% of S. aureus biofilms. Overall, NIR-responsive [email protected] ε-PL has great potential in the field of infection treatment.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2), as one of the titanium (Ti)-based implants, holds a promise for a variety of anti-bacterial application in medical research. In the current study, a functional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/polydopamine (PDA)-LL-37 coating on titanium dioxide (TiO2) implant was prepared. Anodic oxidation and hydrothermal treatment was given to prepare TiO2 nanotubes-MoS2/PDA-LL-37 (T-M/P-L). The in vitro osteogenic effect of T-M/P-L was evaluated by measuring mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, extracellular matrix (ECM) mineralization, collagen secretion and osteoblast-specific messenger RNAs (mRNAs) expression. The determination on the anti-bacterial ability of T-M/P-L was followed. Furthermore, the ability of T-M/P-L to promote bone formation in vivo was evaluated. Near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation exposure enabled the T-M/P-L coating-endowed Ti substrates to hold effective anti-bacterial ability. T-M/P-L promoted the adhesion and proliferation of MSCs. In addition, an increase was witnessed regarding the ALP activity, collagen secretion and ECM mineralization, along with the expression of runt-related transcription factor 2, ALP and osteocalcin in the presence of T-M/P-L. Additionally, T-M/P-L could stimulate endothelial cells to secrete vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and promote capillary-like tubule formation. Upon NIR laser irradiation exposure, T-M/P-L not only exhibited efficient in vivo anti-bacterial activity but also facilitated new bone formation. Collectively, T-M/P-L had enhanced anti-bacterial and osteogenic activity under NIR laser irradiation.

Flexible sensors which are highly stretchable, sensitive, and self-adhesive are critically required for wearable electronics, personalized healthcare monitoring and electronic skins. Conductive hydrogel-based sensors hold great promises for this purpose. However, it remains a critical challenge to integrate all the critical functions ( e.g. , remarkable stretchability, high sensitivity, and self-adhesiveness) into one hydrogel. Here, we propose a bio-inspired hybrid hydrogel framework with a hierarchical configuration that incorporates sodium casein, polydopamine, calcium chloride, and graphene oxide into a polyacrylamide hydrogel. Multiple interpenetrating network architectures and their strong interactions provide superior stretchability of 10,300%, high strain sensitivity with a gauge factor of 13.45 over a broad strain range, robust adhesiveness, fast responsiveness, and excellent reproducibility. This hydrogel-based wearable sensor demonstrates outstanding sensing performance in detecting, quantifying, and remotely monitoring human motions through integration into a cloud platform. A durable glove is further developed using the hybrid hydrogel for wirelessly controlling synchronized motions of a manipulator and accurately recognizing hand gestures. This hybrid hydrogel has shown wide-range applications in fields including wearable electronics, human–machine interfaces, and electronic skins.

Oceanic oil spill and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters can cause significant threats to the ecological environment and human health. Herein, we design a durable TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper for efficient oil/water separation. Bioinspired from mussel adhesive proteins, the mechanical durability of the as-prepared superhydrophobic paper is enhanced by the deposition of polydopamine (PDA) onto cellulosic fibers via self-polymerization of dopamine. The TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper shows a high water contact angle of 168.2° and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, exhibiting excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. Furthermore, the as-prepared superhydrophobic paper possesses excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in corrosive solutions and solvents and boiling water and being subjected to the sandpaper abrasion test, respectively. More importantly, the separation efficiency of the TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper for an oil/water mixture is 97.2%, and it maintains a separation efficiency above 94.3% even after 15 cyclic separation processes. Furthermore, the separation efficiency for water-in-oil emulsions is higher than 93.7% after 15 cyclic separation tests, showing its excellent recyclable stability for water-in-oil emulsions. Therefore, the rationally designed TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper shows great potential in the practical applications of self-cleaning, antifouling, and oil/water separation.
