Superhydrophobic surfaces with long-lasting stability through simple fabrication procedures have attracted considerable attention. The application of existing superhydrophobic surfaces is limited, considering the use of toxic ingredients and their poor longevity. Herein, we report the novel fabrication of durable, fluorine-free, and self-healing superhydrophobic cotton textiles by utilising boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) as a cross-linker to silica nanoparticles and poly (vinyl alcohol) followed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification through a simple dip-dry coating technique. Boric acid possessed a noticeable micro/nanoporous structure with silica and poly (vinyl alcohol) via cross-linking on the surface, which showed excellent superhydrophobicity, and PDMS modification on the textile surface created a lower surface energy than unmodified textile. The fabricated surface exhibited a maximum water-contact angle of 156.84°±1.5° with a small rolling angle of 1.8°±0.3°, presenting outstanding superhydrophobicity for cotton textiles. The modified cotton textile surface had excellent durability against mechanical and chemical disturbances. The experimental findings indicated that the fabricated textile had adequate mechanical strength that could withstand sandpaper abrasion for 120 cycles, tape-peeling repetition 60 times, knife scratching for 20 cycles and washing by surfactant solutions for 80 cycles. Additionally, the modified textiles exhibited oil–water separation and self-healing abilities, therefore showing multifunctional properties that have potential in a wide range of cotton textile surface treatments.

Superhydrophobic materials have a wide range of applications in the fields of anticorrosion, anti-dust, anti-ice and anti-fouling due to their self-cleaning, anti-wetting and anti-bacterial properties. However, there are problems in the preparation process, such as cumbersome processes, inconsistent properties of the prepared hydrophobic surfaces, and environmental pollution by fluoropolymers. Therefore, it is especially critical to develop a simple method to prepare green and efficient superhydrophobic surfaces. Here, a simple template method is used to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces. The Polystyrene (PS) honeycomb patterned film was used as a template, and the microstructure inside the pores of the PS film was changed by filling silica particles inside the template. Reproduction of the surface microstructure of PS films using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The shape and size of the template structure are adjusted to regulate the surface microstructure, which in turn achieves the control of the overall hydrophobicity. The transition from PDMS hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity was achieved by changing the structure of the PS film surface. The PDMS@PS-SiO 2 film achieved a water contact angle of 153°, an increase of 48° compared to the original film. Tested at different temperatures and pH, PDMS@PS-SiO 2 film has good stability performance. Immersing the film in pollutants still maintains its own cleaning properties and is not easily contaminated for long-term use. The morphology of the film surface was observed using electron microscopy to demonstrate the successful preparation of the film as well as to explore the reason for the variation of the hydrophobic performance. In addition, using PDMS@PS-SiO 2 film as the substrate of the hydrophobic film, the bionic water-collecting film was prepared with a water-collecting performance of 20.12 ± 0.15 mg min −1 cm −2 . The reuse of mist was achieved. This method provides a new idea for the preparation of superhydrophobic surfaces and solving the problem of water shortage.

Stretchable transparent electrodes (STEs) composed of highly conductive silver nanowires (AgNWs) and mechanically stretchable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are compelling materials for the development of flexible electronic devices. So far, the fabrication processes of the AgNWs/PDMS-based STEs suffer from low efficiency on a small scale, apart from the limitations and challenges posed by the continuous fabrication processes that are required to exploit these fascinating materials in an industrial context. Here, we have addressed these limitations by using gradient PDMS with a tunable modulus as the stretchable substrate, on which ionic liquid-mediated aligned semi-embedded AgNWs are formed via a scalable superwettability-induced transfer strategy. We have demonstrated the importance of the gradient PDMS in achieving STEs with improved optoelectrical properties, mechanical stretchability, and long-term stability. Furthermore, we have shown the applications of the designed STEs for electro-heating and electroluminescent devices. This promising fabrication process is an industrially relevant alternative to current processes that are either complicated and less effective (for example, stamping transfer) or not compatible with continuous, large-scale production (for example, spin-coating or electrospinning).

In this study, stable and non-defective multilayer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite pervaporation mixed matrix membranes incorporated with in-situ transformed metal organic frameworks was successfully synthesized via ligand vapor phase infiltration and spin-coating. Metal zinc sources were uniformly distributed in PDMS which were in-situ transformed into homogeneous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles, effectively alleviating the aggregation of ZIF-8. Thermal cross-linking of PDMS and the formation of MOFs occurred simultaneously, omitting the complicated preparation and re-dispersion steps of MOF nanoparticles. MOF nanoparticles and PDMS formed a more stabilized composite structure by in-situ transformation, in which PDMS and metal of MOFs can interact with the - Si - O - of silane coupling groups on membrane surface to construct solid multilayer composite membrane, ensuring long-term stability. Moreover, with the aid of hydrophobic interlayer, polymer infiltration into channels of substrate was restricted and casting solution spread out smoothly, facilitating the formation of defect-free PDMS selective layer. Various techniques including Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscope and X-ray Diffraction were applied to explore the morphology, composition and structure of nanoparticles and membranes, and pervaporation tests were taken to investigate the behavior of hydrophobic polymer-based multilayer membranes. For the recovery of low concentration n-butanol, the prepared non-defective multilayer TAO/ZIF-8/K-PDMS composite membrane displayed excellently total permeate flux of 2890 g m −2 h −1 with competitive separation factor of 40.3.

In this work, hierarchical structure composed of periodic nanopillars and wrinkles was designed on flexible and transparent PDMS through a strategy combining template method and oxygen plasma treatment. Investigations on the SERS performance of the substrates obtained after Ag thermal deposition reveal both the nanopillars and the wrinkles contributed greatly to the enhancement. The formation of the periodic wrinkles followed the buckling theory. Under the condition of 30 % deformation and 40 W plasma power, by adjusting the deposition time to 30 min, dense distribution of Ag NPs on the hierarchical PDMS support was achieved while avoiding coverage of the nano wrinkles. The obtained substrate named Ag-30/PDMS-PW had an EF of 3.11×10 7 , excellent uniformity and outstanding reproducibility with an RSD of 2.13 % and 4.9 % respectively. Cyclic loading and tensile tests verify the mechanical stability and perfect elasticity of the Ag-30/PDMS-PW substrate. Coupled with the bi-direction excitation ability, the as-prepared substrate was fully qualified for in-situ detection of pesticide residues, which was demonstrated by the in-situ detection of thiram and thiabendazole on apple surface with concentrations lower than the maximum residue limits. The results manifest the proposed substrate has great potential for in-situ food safety monitoring in real-world applications.

The real-time detection of neurotransmitters had attracted more attention due to the potential to provide vital information for pathology research, disease diagnosis, and clinical efficacy evaluation. Here, a magnetic-mediated nano sensor was developed to improve sensitivity for detection of serotonin (5-HT). The PDMS membrane doped with magnetic particles serves as a conversion element, enhancing the deformation of the thin film caused by surface stress under the action of a magnetic field and amplifying the resistance response signal of the nano sensor. The 5-HT detection associated with neurotransmitter diseases serve as a proof of concept revealing the magnetic sensitization. The detection limit of the 5-HT was decreased to 3.21 nM in the linear range of 5–500 nM, which was lower than that of the nano sensor without magnetic field. The clinical 5-HT samples were also been accurately detected, indicating a positive application potential of the as-prepared magnetic-mediated nano sensor. All these results reveal the high sensitivity and practicality of the as-prepared magnetic-mediated nano sensor and provide a new method for neurotransmitter diseases diagnosis.

Metal nanoparticles hold promising applications in photoacoustic transducers due to their unique plasmonic properties. However, current transducers using conventional noble metal nanoparticles exhibit relatively low photoacoustic conversion efficiency, primarily due to insufficient optical absorption for effective thermal or acoustic energy conversion. This paper proposes the use of nanoparticles derived from the liquid metal gallium-indium eutectic alloy (EGaIn), which demonstrate significantly higher absorption at 1064 nm compared to gold or silver nanoparticles, thereby enhancing photoacoustic conversion efficiency. To stabilize the liquid metal nanoparticles (LMNPs) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTMS) is employed as a surfactant during sonication in a solvent. Furthermore, embedding EGaIn nanoparticles in a cluster form enhances absorption through gap-induced plasmonic effects. Through optimization, a photoacoustic conversion efficiency of 5.1 × 10−3 is achieved, which is 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than those of transducers using conventional metal materials. This study highlights the potential of liquid metal nanoparticles with plasmonic effects in advancing the development of novel photoacoustic composite materials.

Anticorrosive coatings have been widely studied as a promising strategy to prevent or delay metal corrosion, but their effectiveness is limited by coating degradation. Self-healing coatings can mitigate damage through autonomous repair, thereby significantly extending service lifetime even under harsh conditions. Herein, we report an innovative self-healing anticorrosion coating system based on a novel dual-dynamic-bond network combining reversible imine and Zn 2+ coordination bonds. The designed PDMS-HQA-Znₓ system achieve breakthrough autonomous self-healing at sub-zero temperatures (−10 °C) without external stimuli, while maintaining excellent mechanical properties (0.11 MPa tensile strength, 131 % strain). The unique metal-ligand coordination architecture enables: (1) temperature-independent self-healing through dynamic bond recombination, (2) tunable mechanical performance via Zn 2+ content adjustment, and (3) excellent corrosion protection with low corrosion current density (7.6 × 10 −6 A·cm −2 after 72 h in 3.5 wt. % NaCl). This work establishes a new design principle for next-generation protective coatings that maintain functionality under extreme conditions.

We report a novel hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based antifouling coating that incorporates hydroxyl-terminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified with capsaicin (CAP) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles. The CAP & TiO 2 cladding layer provides the CNTs with excellent dispersibility within the PDMS matrix, leveraging the abundant hydroxyl functionalities of both modifiers. The resulting composite displays a synergistic combination of mechanical, biocidal, and corrosion-resistant properties. Mechanical tests show a significant increase in stress-strain values and a more than sixfold rise in adhesion to the mild steel substrate. The seawater immersion test demonstrates that the PDMS-based coating containing 7 wt% CAP-TiO 2 @CNTs achieves an impressive reduction of over 97 % in protein adhesion (measured via FITC-BSA assay) and over 99 % in antibacterial performance (against E. coli and S. aureus ). Additionally, this coating significantly decreases microalgal colonization and macrofouling attachment compared to pristine PDMS coatings. Besides the excellent antifouling properties, the PDMS-based coatings also demonstrate reasonable anticorrosion properties with their |Z| 0.01Hz (impedance at 0.01 Hz) increasing from 3.57 × 10 7 Ω.cm 2 (pristine PDMS coatings) to 2.52 × 10 10 Ω.cm 2 (7 wt% CAP-TiO 2 @CNTs modified PDMS coatings). These findings may highlight the potential application of PDMS-based coating in the antifouling field of ship hulls and coastal wind power piles.

Hyperuricemia is closely related to a variety of diseases and has been listed as one of the twenty most persistent diseases in the 21st century by the United Nations. Therefore, strengthening the diagnosis of hyperuricemia has become imperative. Here, ordered inverse opal array structures (PAANs) composed of PDMS and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been designed using a bottom-up self-assembly method. The structures exhibit a periodic distribution of hot spots, an enhancement factor (EF) of 4.22 × 10 4 , and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of signal intensity of less than 5%, which can provide high reproducibility of SERS signals. The PAANs substrate is used to detect uric acid in the tears of patients with hyperuricemia, and the limit of detection is 6.03 μM. The significant linear relationship between blood uric acid and tear uric acid indicates that the developed method is a rapid, effective, and non-invasive technique for the determination of uric acid in tears.

Ice and snow accumulation pose significant threats to the operational safety of aerospace and power systems; however, traditional anti-icing methods often suffer from high energy consumption and environmental concerns. Inspired by the efficient light absorption and micro-nano structures of black butterfly wings, this study developed a biomimetic composite coating (Laser-textured carbon black/MoS 2 @PDMS, L-CM@P) on a copper substrate using laser microfabrication and a multi-scale material compositing strategy. This coating integrates superhydrophobicity with highly efficient photothermal conversion capabilities. The L-CM@P coating comprises molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanoblooms and carbon black (CB) as photothermal synergistic components for full-spectrum absorption, with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) incorporated to enhance interfacial adhesion and mechanical robustness. Owing to the “light trapping effect” induced by its micro-nano hierarchical structure, the L-CM@P coating exhibits exceptional photothermal performance, achieving a significant surface temperature rise under 1 sun illumination to enable ultra-rapid active de-icing. Simultaneously, the coating demonstrates remarkable ice-delaying capabilities due to its superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle >150 ° ), achieving a synergy between passive anti-icing and active de-icing. Furthermore, the layered self-lubricating properties of MoS 2 allow the coating to maintain a low and stable coefficient of friction ( ~ 0.15 ) during wear tests, alongside excellent resistance to UV aging. This study provides new insights into the design of multifunctional surfaces for extreme environments and offers broad application prospects for long-term protection under harsh operating conditions.

Synergistic coating design combining ZIF-8 and PDMS on a porous PI substrate. • Integrated multifunctionality enabling oil-water separation, photocatalytic degradation, and anti-bioadhesion. • Exceptional separation performance with a water contact angle of 162.8° for various oil-water mixtures. • Outstanding environmental durability demonstrated against mechanical abrasion, UV aging, and acid/alkali corrosion. The treatment of wastewater containing oils and organic pollutants remains a critical environmental challenge. Traditional separation membranes often lack the multifunctionality needed for simultaneous separation, degradation, and antifouling. In this study, a robust superhydrophobic composite membrane was fabricated via a facile solution-impregnation method, in which zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were integrated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) onto a porous polyimide (PI) substrate. The designed coating synergistically combines the micro-/nano-scale roughness of ZIF-8 with the low surface energy of PDMS, endowing the membrane with a water contact angle of 162.8 ± 0.3° and a sliding angle of 3.0 ± 0.4°. The composite membrane demonstrates high-efficiency separation of various oil-water mixtures (>95% efficiency, flux >9000 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), effective photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under ultraviolet (UV) light (93.7% within 2.5 h), and excellent anti-bioadhesion performance against Chlorella vulgaris. Moreover, the membrane retains its superhydrophobicity after mechanical abrasion, tape peeling, UV aging, and exposure to acidic/alkaline environments, confirming outstanding durability. This work presents a scalable strategy for developing multifunctional PI-based membranes with integrated separation, catalytic, and antifouling properties, showing promising potential for practical water remediation applications.
