Calcium ions can react with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form a form-stable phase change material, but the low thermal conductivity hinders its practical application. In this paper, hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different mass are introduced into PEG1500·CaCl2form-stable phase change material to prepare a new type of energy storage material. Carbon nanotubes increased the mean free path (MFP) of phonons and effectively reduced the interfacial thermal resistance between pure PEG and PEG1500·CaCl23D skeleton structure. Thermal conductivity was significant improved after increasing MWCNTs mass, while the latent heat decreases. At 1.5 wt%, composite material shows the highest phase change temperature of 42 °C, and its thermal conductivity is 291.30% higher than pure PEG1500·CaCl2. This article can provide some suggestions for the preparation and application of high thermal conductivity form-stable phase change materials.Keywords:MWCNTs;form-stable phase change materials;PEG;thermal conductivity

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has a wide range of physiological functions and therapeutic value. However, its biomedical application as a health product or drug is limited by its insolubility and low bioavailability. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted great interest for drug or therapeutic agent delivery due to their unique properties. In this study, the pristine SWCNTs are purified with different oxidizing acid, and the resulting shortened CNTs (CNTs-COOH) are conjugated with poly-(ethylene glycol) (PEG) groups. Afterwards, CoQ10 is loaded by CNTs carriers. CNTs carriers are systematically characterized and evaluated in terms of drug loading, in vitro release, cytotoxicity, and cellular uptake. The results reveal that the sizes (length) of CNTs-COOH and CNTs-PEG are 253.2 and 328.7 nm, respectively, and they have high loading capacity for CoQ10 and low cytotoxicity toward Caco-2 cells. In comparison with CNTs-COOH, CNTs-PEG exhibited better sustained-release property for CoQ10. Also, CNTs-PEG carriers loaded with CoQ10 can be effectively delivered into cells and have enhanced cellular uptake efficiency over time. Further study results of the uptake mechanism illustrate that CNTs-PEG can be internalized into cells through the broader and more efficient entry routes, including direct penetration, clathrin-mediated endocytosis and macropinocytosis pathway. In summary, the PEG-conjugated CNTs may be used as novel nanocarriers, and the findings will contribute to the rational design of multifunctional delivery vehicles for CoQ10. Graphical abstract

Free adjustment of micro/nanophase-separation degrees in coatings is not easily accessible, which is a big handicap in the development of phase-separation-related applications. Here, by utilizing the reactivity difference between two phases, a two-step aza- Michael addition pre-crosslinking strategy, demonstrated by acryloxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane/polyethylene glycol (PEG) blend coatings, is proposed for the first time to tune microphase separation degrees, and promote compatibility of the biphasic amphiphilic polymer blends. Followed by a systematic study of the two-step pre-crosslinking time, surface morphologies of samples with desired phase-separation degrees are unveiled using optical microscopy, AFM, and XPS. The wettability, and anti-fouling properties — for example, anti-protein and anti-marine bacterial ( Shewanella ) adhesion — of these coatings are assessed. Less protein adsorption is observed on those surfaces with lower receding water contact angles. Shewanella adhesion is efficiently discouraged by the introduction of PEG segments, but the trend evolved with surface wettability and micro/nanophase structure in a complex way.

The development of stimuli-responsive multifunctional nanocarriers for therapeutic drug delivery is extremely desirable for highly specific treatment of disease. Herein, thiol–polyethylene glycol–folate acid-modified hollow mesoporous bismuth nanoshells (HM-Bi@PEG–FA NSs) were developed as the new dual-stimuli-responsive single-“elemental” photothermal nanocarriers for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy of tumor. The designed hollow-mesoporous-type nanocarriers present excellent photothermal conversion capacity (∼34.72%) and good biocompatibility. Meanwhile, acidic pH and near-infrared (NIR) laser dual-stimulated doxorubicin (DOX) release is successfully achieved. More importantly, the DOX-loaded HM-Bi@PEG–FA NSs hold an efficient in vitro/in vivo antitumor effect through the synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy. Therefore, our findings provide the possibility of designing a dual-stimuli-responsive hollow mesoporous Bi-based photothermal nanocarrier for synergistically enhanced antitumor therapy.

In general, atherosclerosis is considered to be a form of chronic inflammation. Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory effects in atherosclerosis, but it was not considered for long-term administration on account of a poor pharmacokinetic profile and adverse side effects. Nanoparticles in which drugs can be dissolved, encapsulated, entrapped or chemically attached to the particle surface have abilities to incorporate dexamethasone and to be used as controlled or targeted drug delivery system. Long circulatory polymeric nanoparticles present as an assisting approach for controlled and targeted release of the encapsulated drug at the atherosclerotic site. Polymeric nanoparticles combined with ultrasound (US) are widely applied in cancer treatment due to their time applications, low cost, simplicity, and safety. However, there are few studies on atherosclerosis treatment using polymeric nanoparticles combined with US. In this study, targeted dexamethasone acetate (DA)-loaded poly (lactide-glycolide)-polyethylene glycol-cRGD (PLGA-PEG-cRGD) nanoparticles (DA-PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs) were prepared by the emulsion-evaporation method using cRGD modified PLGA-PEG polymeric materials (PLGA-PEG-cRGD) prepared as the carrier. The average particle size of DA-PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs was 221.6 ± 0.9 nm. Morphology of the nanoparticles was spherical and uniformly dispersed. In addition, the DA released profiles suggested that ultrasound could promote drug release from the nanocarriers and accelerate the rate of release. In vitro, the cellular uptake process of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)@DA-PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs combined with US into the damaged human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) indicated that US promoted rapid intracellular uptake of[email protected]PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs. The cell viability of DA-PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs combined with US reached 91.9% ± 0.2%, which demonstrated that DA-PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs combined with US had a positive therapeutic effect on damaged HUVECs. Overall, DA-PLGA-PEG-cRGD NPs in combination with US may provide a promising drug delivery system to enhance the therapeutic effects of these chemotherapeutics at the cellular level. Keywords:dexamethasone acetate;polymeric nanoparticles;ultrasound;atherosclerosis;polypeptide targeting

In this work, a new multifunctional nanoplatform (Fe3O4@mSiO2-FA-CuS-PEG nanocomposite) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and targeted chemo-photothermal therapy, was firstly fabricated on the basis of magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4@mSiO2), on which folic acid (FA) was grafted as the targeting reagent, CuS nanocrystals were attached as the photothermal agent, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was coupled to improve biocompatibility. The characterization results demonstrated that the fabricated Fe3O4@mSiO2-FA-CuS-PEG nanocomposites not only showed strong magnetism and excellent MRI performance, but also had a high doxorubicin (DOX, an anticancer drug) loading capacity (22.1%). The loaded DOX can be sustainably released, which was apt to be controlled by pH adjustment and near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. More importantly, targeted delivery of the DOX-loaded Fe3O4@mSiO2-FA-CuS-PEG nanocomposites could be accomplished in HeLa cells via the receptor-mediated endocytosis pathway, and this exhibited synergistic effect of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy against HeLa cells under irradiation with a 915 nm laser. Therefore, the fabricated multifunctional Fe3O4@mSiO2-FA-CuS-PEG nanocomposite has a great potential in image-guided therapy of cancers.

In this work, PEG–PLLA electrospun fibers were developed as a new controlled release system for macrolide antibiotic drug brefeldin A (BFA). SEM and XRD analyses of the BFA-loaded PEG–PLLA fibers revealed that the average diameter of fibers was below 950 nm with smooth surfaces, and the drug was well incorporated into the fibers in amorphous form. The release profiles of BFA in PBS were measured by HPLC, demonstrating that the controlled release of BFA could be gained for long time. The in vitro antitumor activity against human liver carcinoma HepG2 cells of the fibers containing 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% and 15% BFA were examined by MTT method, and the results showed that cell growth inhibition rates at 72 h were 64%, 77%, 80%, 81% and 85%, respectively. These results strongly suggested that the BFA/PEG–PLLA fibers had an effect of controlled release of BFA and were suitable for postoperative chemotherapy of cancers.

In this paper, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG, Mw = 1000 and 5000 Da) via a disulfide bond linker (named as MSNs-SS-PEG 1000 and MSNs-SS-PEG 5000 , respectively) as the novel drug delivery carrier was successfully synthesized. The particle size, surface structural properties, and pore size of these materials were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both MSNs-SS-PEG 1000 and MSNs-SS-PEG 5000 exhibited the spherical particles with an average diameter of about 200 nm, typical micropore structures, and intact pore interconnection. Moreover, the releases of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) from these materials in different concentrations of glutathione (GSH) were investigated. The release of DOX from MSNs-SS-PEG 1000 and MSNs-SS-PEG 5000 revealed the redox-responsive characteristic and the drug release content increased with the increase of GSH concentration. Therefore, MSNs-SS-PEG might be a promising carrier material in delivering anticancer drugs.

We report a facile and low-cost approach to design a difunctional nanoplatform (CuS@mSiO2-PEG) as a near-infrared (NIR) light responsive drug delivery system for efficient chemo-photothermal therapy. The nanoplatform demonstrated good biocompatibility and colloidal stability, as well as high loading capacity for the anticancer drug (26.5 wt% for doxorubicin (DOX)). The CuS nanocrystals (core) within these CuS@mSiO2-PEG core–shell nanoparticles can effectively absorb and convert NIR light to fatal heat under NIR light irradiation for photothermal therapy, and the release of DOX from the mesoporous silica (shell) can be triggered by pH and NIR light for chemotherapy. When the CuS@mSiO2-PEG/DOX nanocomposites were irradiated by 980 nm light, both chemotherapy and photothermal therapy were simultaneously driven, resulting in a synergistic effect for killing cancer cells. Importantly, compared with chemotherapy or photothermal treatment alone, the combined therapy significantly improved the therapeutic efficacy.

In this paper, polyethylene glycol-phospholipid structure is used to synthesize hybrid cluster of 40–50 nm diameter that contains hydrophobic bismuth sulfide nanoparticles and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots. The composite probe’s toxicity, CT imaging, and fluorescence imaging performance are also studied. Experimental results show that the nanocomposite hybrid cluster has obvious CT contrast enhancement and fluorescence imaging capability in vitro even after cellular uptake. It gives a CT number of 700 (Hounsfield units) at 15 mg/mL, higher than that of the current iobitridol CT contrast agent. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide experiment reveals that it has low cytotoxicity at concentration up to of 3.14 mg/mL of Bi, indicating the composite probe has potential ability for CT and fluorescence bimodal imaging.

A pH- and reduction-responsive anticancer drug delivery system was prepared and the triggerable and controllable drug release in response to stimuli was observed. In the first step, methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) was conjugated with polysuccinimide (PSI) via disulfide linkages, and the PSI segment thereafter, was aminolyzed by 2-diisopropylaminoethylamine (DIPEA) and hydrazine hydrate (Hy). The obtained amphiphilic copolymer could form a bond with the model drug doxorubicin (DOX) at pH 7.4 via acid-labile hydrazone bonds, and more free DOX molecules could be encapsulated via hydrophobic interactions and π–π stacking between the aromatic rings, leading to DOX-loaded micelles formation. These polymers and polymeric micelles then were characterized. The results showed that the polymeric micelles exhibited dual pH- and reduction-responsive disassembly behaviors. Moreover, while the blank copolymers had excellent cytocompatibility, the DOX-loaded micelles showed an enhanced drug release profile and improved cytotoxicity with decrease of pH and/or the addition of glutathione (GSH). These results indicated that the novel nanoparticle based on PEG–SS–poly(amino acid) block copolymer is a promising candidate for a carrier in controllable anti-tumor drug delivery.

The aim of this study is to develop a simple and applicable HPLC method for the detection of vincristine in rat plasma after administration of poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid)–poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA–PEG) nanoparticles loaded with vincristine sulfate (VCR). Vincristine was extracted from rat plasma and vinblastine sulfate was chosen as the internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation of VCR and IS was achieved by a Dikma Dimonsil C 18 column (200 mm × 4.6 mm) with the mobile phase consisting of 0.02 M sodium dihydrogen phosphate–methanol (36:64, v/v, pH = 4.7) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The ultraviolet detection wavelength was set at 276 nm. The calibration curve was linear over a concentration range of 0.05–5.0 μg/mL. The intra-day and inter-day accuracy for three quality controls (QC) samples was 93.48–107.74% and 92.61–96.58%, respectively; the precision was less than 9%. The average method recoveries for vincristine from spiked plasma at all QC levels were over 83%; and extraction recoveries were between 66 and 70%. Vincristine was stable in rat plasma for one month at −80 °C, for 8 h at room temperature , as well as during three freeze–thaw cycles. This HPLC method was applied successfully to the pharmacokinetic study of vincristine in rats after a single intravenous injection of VCR in physiological saline (F-VCR) solution, VCR-loaded PLGA–mPEG nanoparticles with (NP1) and PLGA–PEG–folate nanoparticles (NP2) suspension, respectively. There were significant differences in main pharmacokinetic parameters between F-VCR and the nanoparticles. Both kinds of VCR-loaded nanoparticles displayed improved pharmacokinetic profiles.
