Enhancing the combustion efficiency of aluminum (Al) is a crucial research direction for solid propellants. Constructing an efficient fuel-oxidizer interaction environment through interfacial regulation is an effective approach. In this work, a synergistic strategy integrating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-mediated interface regulation with core-shell structuring was adopted to fabricate a dual-layer core-shell Al@PVDF@HMX composite energetic materials (EMs). This composite exhibits an ultra-high heat of explosion (8416.8 J·g⁻¹), which is over 52.8% higher than that of the Al+HMX physical mixture. Explosion residue measurements show that the primary combustion products were AlN and Al₂O₃, and no large Al agglomerations were detected, meaning that the inhibition of Al particle agglomeration by the dual-layer core-shell structure and the shell-breaking combustion effect induced by PVDF should be the key factors for the heat of explosion enhancement. Simultaneously, it was demonstrated that the composite is superior safety to HMX, as its impact sensitivity (8%) and friction sensitivity (36%) are decreased by 91% and 64%, respectively. This work indicates that the dual-layer core-shell structured Al@PVDF@HMX can synergistically improve the reaction between Al and HMX, providing a new approach to improve the energy efficiency and safety of EMs.

Flexible piezoelectric fibers are promising materials for next-generation wearable and flexible electronic devices due to their lightweight structure, mechanical flexibility, and electromechanical response. In this study, BaTiO3/PVDF composite fibers were prepared by melt spinning under an electrostatic field, followed by thermal drawing to enhance the electroactive phase content. The effects of BaTiO3loading, draw ratio, thermal stretching ratio, stretching rate, and electric field strength on the crystalline structure of the fibers were systematically investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and electron microscopy were used to evaluate phase evolution, crystallinity, and filler distribution. The results showed that the processing conditions significantly influenced the transformation of PVDF from the α-phase to the electroactive β-phase. The optimized fibers were obtained at 1 wt.% BaTiO3, a thermal stretching ratio of 5, a stretching rate of 40 mm/min, and an electric field strength of 18 kV, resulting in a crystallinity of 61.3% and a β-phase content of 95.5%. The enhanced structural characteristics indicate the strong potential of the developed composite fibers for flexible electroactive applications, though direct electromechanical characterization is required for device integration.

Boron (B) particles offer the advantage of high energy density for ramjet applications but suffer from challenges including difficult ignition, low combustion efficiency, and agglomeration. This study employed ammonium perchlorate (AP), a common propellant oxidizer, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a fluorine-containing compound, to improve the ignition and combustion characteristics of boron particles. Two types of samples were prepared: boron particles coated with AP, and boron particles mechanically mixed with PVDF. Thermal analysis indicated that both AP coating and PVDF addition facilitated the thermal decomposition of boron, significantly lowering its decomposition temperature. Laser ignition experiments under two different atmospheres revealed that AP coating consistently intensified boron combustion. The ignition delay time was reduced and the combustion temperature was increased. However, the effectiveness of PVDF addition may be influenced by the ambient oxygen concentration. Consequently, both AP coating and PVDF addition are advantageous for enhancing boron combustion.

Advances in electronic device miniaturization and system integration, alongside rapid progress in wireless communication technologies, have significantly amplified electromagnetic interference problems. This development necessitates the creation of high-performance electromagnetic shielding materials. This study presents a new design for electromagnetic shielding composites comprising an asymmetric structure of cobalt-coated nylon 6 microspheres (PA6@Co), silver nanowires (AgNWs) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Specifically, PA6 microspheres were prepared using anionic reaction-induced phase separation, and cobalt was plated on their surfaces, thereby forming magnetic PA6@Co microspheres. The magnetic saturation intensity of these microspheres can reach 80 emu/g. The asymmetric PA6@Co/AgNWs/PVDF electromagnetic shielding composites with absorption-dominant characteristics were constructed using AgNWs as the conductive filler and PVDF as the matrix. The results show that within the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) range, the PA6@Co/AgNWs/PVDF composite material exhibits excellent electromagnetic shielding performance. Its maximum electromagnetic shielding efficiency (SET) reaches 48.1 dB, and the absorption coefficient (A) is 0.8, demonstrating a distinct absorption-dominant shielding characteristic. This asymmetric structural design strategy solves the limitations of traditional shielding materials and provides a new approach to developing environmentally friendly, efficient electromagnetic shielding materials.

The inherent hydrophobic nature of PVDF material renders it challenging to establish a stable aqueous hydration layer, thereby limiting its suitability as a substrate for the preparation of nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this study, we developed a novel modification approach that effectively enhances the hydrophilicity of PVDF substrates through the incorporation of sulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (SPANI) and hyperbranched polyester (HPE) into the PVDF casting solution, followed by cross-linking with trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The introduction of SPANI and HPE, which contain reactive polar amino and hydroxyl groups, improved the hydrophilicity of the substrate, while the subsequent cross-linking with TMC effectively anchored these components within the substrate through the covalent linking between TMC and the reactive sites. Additionally, the hydrolysis of TMC yielded non-reactive carboxyl groups, which further enhanced the hydrophilicity of the substrate. As a result, the modified PVDF substrate exhibited improved hydrophilicity, facilitating the construction of an intact polyamide layer. In addition, the fabricated TFC NF membrane demonstrated excellent performance in the advanced treatment of tap water, achieving a total dissolved solid removal rate of 57.9% and a total organic carbon removal rate of 85.3%. This work provides a facile and effective route to modify PVDF substrates for NF membrane fabrication.

A flexible temperature and humidity sensor has been developed based on a composite of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The sensor performance was optimized by introducing graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) and ionic liquids (TFSI) into the polymer composite. This type of humidity sensors has high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent stability, making it suitable for use in wearable health monitoring. The addition of TPU into PVDF facilitates the formation of a porous structure which has both a large specific surface area and high hydrophilicity. After optimizing the PVDF/TPU mass ratio to 5:3, such a humidity sensor displays 1.46 times higher sensitivity than that of pure PVDF film, with a linear response range of 10–90% relative humidity. The response time and recovery time are 7.67 s and 6.37 s, respectively. Owing to the improved hydrophobicity, the sensors also exhibit a good stability in a high humidity environment for > 10 days without significant degradation. Moreover, such a composite also has the capability to distinguish normal breathing from rapid breathing, demonstrating its potential in wearable health monitoring.

To develop an efficient filter for removing white blood cells from whole blood, hydrophilic large-pore blended membranes of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyethylene glycol, with good biocompatibility, were prepared using the process of vapor-induced phase separation at various PVDF concentrations. The results demonstrated that at a PVDF mass concentration of 14%, the membrane had increased surface roughness, significantly enhanced hydrophilicity and wettability, and a wetting time of 8 s. The surface roughness of the membrane was also reduced to 31.637 nm. Furthermore, hemolysis rate and protein adsorption tests indicated that the blended membranes possessed excellent biocompatibility. They were reduced to 2.48% and 34.44 μg·cm –2 , respectively. The pore size of the fabricated membrane was relatively large, which reached approximately 8 μm respectively, satisfying the filtration requirements. Lastly, the effects of different temperatures and multi-layered filters on leukocyte removal and the retention of red blood cells and platelets from whole blood were evaluated. The results revealed that the leukocyte removal rate was highest at 4 °C and with three membrane layers, the leukocyte removal rate was highest, reaching 98.36%, while the RBC and platelet content remained nearly unchanged compared with the original blood. This study provides a new approach for blood cell separation that is expected to play a significant role in medical fields such as blood transfusion demonstrating great potential for application and innovation.

Superhydrophobic coatings often present a trade-off between transparency and mechanical robustness for glass substrates. Inspired by the general concept of natural superhydrophobic surfaces, a highly transparent superhydrophobic anti-icing composite coating based on a Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE)/Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) blend polymer via electrospinning technology has been developed. By constructing a PVDF-TrFE/PDMS nanofiber network on a silanized trimethylsilane (TMS-s) /polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) promoter layer (which acts as an interface-strengthening layer), the gradient structure design of the functional coating on the glass substrate was successfully realized. Experimental results demonstrate that the TMS-s/PDMS promoter layer significantly enhances the interfacial bonding strength between the PVDF-TrFE/PDMS nanofibers and the glass substrate, achieving a water contact angle of 154.1° ± 4°, a sliding angle of 3° ± 1°, and approximately 92.6 % transmittance. The adhesion-enhancing mechanism is further investigated through molecular dynamics simulation analysis. Results reveal that the introduction of TMS-s increases interfacial adhesion, attributed to strong siloxane bonds formed between TMS-s and the glass surface, as well as Si-O-C bonds between TMS-s and PDMS. This combination of interactions significantly improves the coating's mechanical robustness. This study provides a novel strategy for multifunctional protective coatings in applications such as building windows, solar panels, automotive windshields, and aircraft windows.

Flexible humidity sensors play a crucial role in the real-time monitoring of human physiological activities by being integrated with smart terminals, compact medical devices and flexible electronic skins. In this work, a facile fabrication method of a flexible humidity sensor based on a composite material of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyaniline (PANI) using in-situ polymerization and dip-coating techniques was proposed on a microporous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) filter membrane substrate. The resulting PDDA@PANI/PVDF-3.50 % sensor demonstrates remarkable sensitivity with a response of up to 5249 % across a humidity range of 11–97 % relative humidity (RH), minimal hysteresis (∼1.2 %), rapid response and recovery times (11 s and 28 s), stable performance under mechanical deformation, and excellent long-term durability. Additionally, the sensor can readily identify three breathing states and detect finger movements as short as 1 mm. The excellent performance is attributed to the hydrophilic modification and synergistic effect of PDDA on PANI chain, and the rich microporous structure of PVDF membrane. This work offers a novel strategy for developing advanced flexible sensors with significant potential in wearable electronic devices for healthcare and human-computer interaction.

Against the backdrop of the booming sophisticated electronics industry, polymer composites integrating superior dielectric permittivity ( ε ), low loss (tan δ ) and excellent breakdown strength ( E b ) have become a persistent pursuit in the research community. To simultaneously bolster the ε and E b in alumina (Al)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), in this study the neat Al particles were first surface-oxidized to thicken the alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) thickness and then encapsulated with a titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) layer, followed by an investigation into the dielectric properties of the resulting Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF composites. The results indicate that the Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF exhibits a higher ε and E b but lower tan δ relative to pristine Al/PVDF. The elevated ε stems from the synergistic regulation of high-frequency fast intra-particle and low-frequency slow inter-particle polarizations in Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF. The Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 double-shell not only prevents direct contact between conductive Al but also induces deep traps immobilizing charges and lifts the energy barrier for captured charges de-trapping, thus restraining the tan δ and leakage current. Moreover, the double-shell effectively strengthens interfacial interactions and alleviates strong dielectric mismatch between the two components, leading to much reduced electric tree growth and improved E b . Theoretical simulation further reveals a profound understanding of the inherent multiple polarization mechanisms and the charge migration modulation induced by the double-shell structure. So, this work provides unique insights for realizing simultaneously high ε , superior E b and minimal tan δ via core@double-shell structure in percolating composites, which cannot be achieved in traditional composites, offering considerable application potential in power equipment and electric devices.

This work reported a high performance flexible magnetically controllable actuator based on magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) and poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite film . The magnetic-mechanic-electric coupling properties of the actuator were systematically investigated by cyclical wrinkle, magnetic bending, and stretching test. The induced charge under a magnetic bending can reach as large as 158 pC even at small magnetic field of 100 mT with the bending angle up to almost 90° within 0.6 s. Moreover, a new model was proposed to theoretically reveal the intrinsic correspondence. The model matches well with the experimental results. Based on this kind of actuator, a magnetically controllable tentacle is developed, which could grasp, transport, and release object by switching the supplied current. Due to the real-time deformation feedback characteristics, this kind of actuators can find wide applications in actively controllable engineering, artificial robotics, and biomedicine.

The incorporation of linear shaped fillers is thought to be able to effectively enhance the dielectric properties of polymer based composites. However, the effect of electrospinning and subsequent calcination processing on the morphology of the fillers and the dielectric performance of the polymer based composites is still unclear. Herein, we demonstrate that filler illustrating two morphological characteristics at the same time, obtained by selecting optimum electrospun precursor concentration before calcination . It is demonstrated that the final filler morphology varies from linear to intermedia (linear and droplets), to droplets with increasing tetrabutyl titanate concentration in the electrospun solution. For filler consisting both linear and droplets characteristics, a maximum energy density of 12.54 J/cm 3 is reached at breakdown strength of 393 kV/mm, with a charge and discharge energy efficiency around 76%. Therefore, this could provide new insight into for the preparation of linear shape based fillers for high performance dielectric polymer composites .
