Membrane technologies have been extensively employed to separate and purify emulsified oily wastewater. However, the long-term performance of membranes is still restricted by oil fouling and their inability to function in severe conditions. Herein, ZrO 2 nanoparticles were deposited onto the poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane surface using γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) as a coupling agent, as inspired by a biomimetic coating method of polydopamine (PDA). It has been determined that the distribution density of nanoparticles can be tuned by adjusting the KH550 and ZrO 2 concentrations. After coating the PDA and ZrO 2 layers, the nanocomposite membrane exhibits a high degree of hydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and anti-oil-fouling properties. This outstanding characteristic endows the membrane with an ultrahigh permeation flux of emulsion and a rejection ratio of over 99 % for a variety of oil/water emulsions. The flux recovery of the nanocomposite membrane remains at over 91 % after thirteen cyclic filtrations of emulsions. Moreover, the excellent surface wettability and oil/water separation properties of the nanocomposite membranes can be maintained under prolonged exposure to strong acid, alkali, and salt solutions.

The self-powered piezoelectric sensor can effectively address the power supply issue for electronic skin. However, it remains challenging to fabricate flexible sensors with a modulus similar to that of human skin. This paper reports a PVDF-based organohydrogels as a piezoelectric senor for electronic skin. PVA serves a primary network, promoting the formation of the electroactive β phase in PVDF and ensuring the piezoelectric performance of the organohydrogel sensor. PA enhances crosslinking density and mechanical properties by forming hydrogen bonds with PVA, while also acting as a gelling agent to reduce PVA crystallization. Additionally, organic solvent DMSO is introduced to impart antifreeze properties to the sensor. The organohydrogel exhibits excellent anti-fatigue performance after 100 compression loading–unloading cycles. Additionally, the organohydrogel piezoelectric sensor demonstrates an impressive response time of approximately 8 ms and a wide pressure range of 0–30 N. Furthermore, the piezoelectric organohydrogel exhibits excellent anti-freezing properties, retaining its mechanical and piezoelectric characteristics even after being frozen at low temperature for 10 days. The PVDF-based organohydrogel has been proven to have significant potential for human motion detection without the need for an external power source.

On the basis of the excellent fouling resistance of zwitterionic materials, the super antifouling polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was efficiently prepared though one-step sulfonation of PVDF and polyaniline blend membrane in situ. The self-doped sulfonated polyaniline (SPANI) was generated as a novel zwitterionic polymer to improve the antifouling property of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane used in sewage treatment. Surface attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface zeta potential, and water contact angle demonstrated the successful fabrication of zwitterionic interface by convenient sulfonation modification. The static adsorption fouling test showed the quantified adsorption mass of bovine serum albumin (BSA) pollutant on the PVDF/SPANI membrane surface decreases to 3(±2) μg/cm2, and the water flux recovery ratio (FRR) values were no less than 95% for the three model pollutants of BSA, sodium alginate (SA), and humic acid (HA), which were corresponding hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and natural pollutants in sewage, respectively. This Research Article demonstrated the antifouling advantages of zwitterionic SPANI and aimed to provide a simple method for the large scale preparation of zwitterionic antifouling ultrafiltration membranes.

The hydrophilic modification of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membrane via pretreatment with argon plasma and direct surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was studied. Both modified and unmodified PVDF membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and pore size distribution measurements. FTIR and XPS spectra confirmed that sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) had been grafted onto the membrane surface. The initial contact angle decreased from 87.0° to 29.8° and a water drop penetrated into the modified membrane completely in 8 s. The pore size distribution of the modified membrane exhibited a smaller mean value than that of the original membrane. The antifouling properties of the modified PVDF membrane were evaluated by a filtration test using bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. The results showed that the initial flux of the modified membrane increased from 2140.1 L/m 2 h to 2812.7 L/m 2 h and the equilibrium flux of BSA solution increased from 31 L/m 2 h to 53 L/m 2 h.

Steroidal estrogens are a representative type of endocrine-disrupting chemical contaminant that has been detected in surface water. In this paper, modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were prepared by adding different amounts of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and nano-TiO2particles. PVDF-PVP membrane adsorption, UV photolysis and PVDF-PVP-TiO2membrane photocatalysis performance were investigated by considering the rejection of estrone (E1) and 17β-estradiol (E2) in the cross-flow filtration experiments. The mechanism of photocatalytic degradation on TiO2-doped PVDF membranes was also evaluated. The results from the study indicated that adding PVP and nano-TiO2appropriately in PVDF membranes could be an effective method for better E1and E2 rejection due to adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. Keywords:steroidal estrogens;estrone;17β-estradiol;PVDF-PVP-TiO2ultrafiltration membrane;photocatalysis;water

This work describes the fabrication and characterization of antibacterial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fibre membranes via phase inversion using dry-jet wet-spinning technique. Ag-loaded NaY zeolites were particularly synthesized and then doped with PVDF spinning solution to produce a novel antibacterial hollow fibre with enhanced antibacterial efficiency. The morphologies, crystal structures, and Ag + loading of synthesized Ag-loaded NaY zeolites were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), respectively. The antibacterial efficiencies of the prepared hollow fibre membranes against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) were evaluated by halo zone test, E. coli suspension filtration test and adhesion test. The surface morphologies , pure water flux, hydrophilicity, tensile strength , through-pore size, resistance to BSA of antibacterial PVDF hollow fibre membrane were also investigated. All results demonstrated that PVDF hollow fibre fabricated by doping Ag-loaded zeolites showed excellent antibacterial property, high permeability and mechanical strength , indicating the promising application as the antibacterial ultra-filtration membranes.

For the first time, the removal process of metronidazole (MNZ) from aqueous solutions over nano zerovalent iron (NZVI) encapsulated within poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes was reported. The resultant composite (PPN) demonstrated high reactivity, excellent stability and reusability over the reaction course. Such excellent performance might be attributed to the presence of the charged carboxyl groups in PVDF membrane support, which could enhance NZVI dispersion and improve its longevity. Results showed that a lower initial concentration and higher reaction temperature facilitated the removal of MNZ by PPN, and that the acidic and neutral conditions generally exhibited more favorable effect on MNZ removal than the alkaline ones. Kinetics of the MNZ removal by PPN was found to follow a two-parameter pseudo-first-order decay model well, and the activation energy of the MNZ degradation by PPN was determined to be 30.49 kJ/mol. The presence of chloride ions slightly enhanced the reactivity of PPN with MNZ, whereas sulfate ions inhibited its reactivity. In addition, MNZ degradation pathways by PPN were proposed based on the identified intermediates. This study suggests that PPN composite possessing excellent performance may be a promising functional material to pretreat antibiotic wastewaters.

Hybrid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with excellent antifouling properties were prepared by non-solvent-induced phase separation through blending zwitterionic SiO2 nanoparticles. Lysine was used to modify SiO2 nanoparticles to generate a surface zwitterion of the amino acid type. Zwitterionic SiO2 nanoparticles were distributed uniformly in the membrane bulk to avoid massive agglomeration and to significantly improve the hydrophilicity and separation performance of PVDF UF membranes. The amount of BSA adsorbed on a hybrid ZP-5% membrane surface of static fouling test decreased to 10 μg cm−2, and the secondary water flux recovery rate (FRR) increased to more than 95% for the dynamic antifouling test of BSA and HA. The addition of zwitterionic SiO2 nanoparticles enhanced the antifouling ability of the membrane through inhibiting irreversible fouling and prolonging the service life of the PVDF UF membrane.

The hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane is playing an enormously important role in its widespread water treatment fields considering the excellent intrinsic properties of PVDF raw materials. Rather than the conventional surface modification or hybridization, herein, we report a novel approach to prepare super-hydrophilic PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) membrane by creating a prefabricated super-hydrophilic surface of inorganic TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). The resultant membrane [prepared by prefabrication surface adhesion of TiO 2 NPs on PVDF-PEG-TiO 2 hybrid membrane (SaT-PPT)] has a uniform distribution of TiO 2 NPs not only on the membrane surface but also within membrane matrix, this will maximize the super-hydrophilic feature throughout the membrane: from inner porous structures to outer surfaces, and will avoid “dead-corner” to block fast water pass through. The performances of SaT-PPT membrane as compared with the control membranes (PVDF-PEG, and PVDF-PEG with TiO 2 anchored only at surface) were investigated in terms of humic acid (HA) rejection, flux and flux decline in lab-made cross flow UF experiments with and without UV irradiation. It indicated that SaT-PPT membrane exhibited the highest hydrophilicity and flux, lowest flux decline and total resistance, but still with the highest HA rejection rate. In addition, SaT-PPT membrane showed the highest flux recovery after simple physical cleaning to extend the longer life span of membrane. It is reasonable to believe that our developed SaT-PPT membranes will provide insightful engineering practices to benefit the broad water treatment applications.

Using high-dielectric inorganic ceramics as fillers can effectively increase the dielectric constant of polymer-based composites. However, a high percentage of fillers will inevitably lead to a decrease in the mechanical toughness of the composite materials. By introducing high aspect ratio copper calcium titanate (CaCu3Ti4O12) nanowires (CCTO NWs) and graphene as fillers, the ternary poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composites (CCTO NWs–graphene)/PVDF with a significant one-dimensional orientation structure were prepared by hot stretching. CCTO NWs and graphene are arranged in a directional manner to form a large number of microcapacitor structures, which significantly improves the dielectric constant of the composites. When the ratio of CCTO NWs and graphene is 0.2 and 0.02, the oriented composites have the highest dielectric constant, which is 19.3% higher than the random composites, respectively. Numerical simulations reveal that the introduction of graphene and the construction of the one-dimensional oriented microstructure have a positive effect on improving the dielectric properties of the composites. This study provides a strategy to improve the dielectric properties of composite materials by structural design without changing the filler content, which has broad application prospects in the field of electronic devices.

One of the main challenges in oil–water separation of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) is to obtain essential oils from the aromatic water of TCM. In this study, silicon dioxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (SiO 2 /PVDF) membranes were prepared using nonsolvent induce phase separation. Then polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated to obtain PDMS/SiO 2 /PVDF membranes. Separated essential oils and water from aromatic water in the gaseous state by vapor permeation membrane separation technology. The relationship between membrane structure and membrane separation effect was investigated. Response surface methodology was used to develop a quadratic model for the separation factor, membrane permeation separation index and membrane preparation process. The optimal process parameters for the membrane separation were 12.31% (mass) concentration of PVDF solution, 9.6% (mass) of N,N -dimethylacetamide in the solidification bath, and 0.2 g hydrophobic nano-SiO 2 incorporation, with a separation factor of 14.45, and a membrane flux of 1203.04 g·m –2 ·h –1 . Compared with the PDMS/PVDF membranes, the separation factor and membrane flux were increased by 68.59% and 3.46%, respectively. Compared with the SiO 2 /PVDF membranes, the separation factor and membrane flux were increased by 478% and 79.33%, respectively. Effectively mitigated the limitations of traditional polymer membrane material performance affected by the “trade-off” effect. Attenuated total internal reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterize the PDMS/SiO 2 /PVDF membranes, and gas chromatography was used to characterize the permeate. In addition, the contents of L -menthol, L -menthone, menthyl acetate and limonene in the permeate, conformed to the European Pharmacopoeia standards . This study provided an effective preparation strategy of a feasible hydrophobic powder polymer membrane for the separation of essential oils from gaseous peppermint aromatic water.

Extensive studies have been conducted on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of antibiotics in water environments. However, the separation and recovery of powdered catalysts from water at the end of the reaction remains a great challenge, which hinders the large-scale application of powder photocatalysts. Inspired by the high sustainability, energy efficiency, and cleanliness of photocatalytic technique in antibiotic degradation, we have developed a stable and efficient ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 /β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (CA-CNS/β-PVDF) membrane for antibiotics removal. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the tetracycline (TC) removal rate of the membrane reached 93.12 % within 2 h due to the synergistic effect of the embedded ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 and β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane still maintained excellent photocatalytic performance after five cycles, showing good stability and reusability. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching analyses suggest that the TC degradation efficiency is enhanced by the synergistic effect of free radical-non-free radical mixed pathways (•O 2 , •OH, h + , 1 O 2 ) and 1 O 2 plays an important role in the degradation process. The excellent photocatalytic antibiotics degradation performances of CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane were still obtained in actual water samples under natural sunlight, suggesting its great application potentials. The photocatalytic mechanism, possible degradation intermediates, and degradation pathways are elucidated based on the theoretical calculations and experiments. The toxicity analysis by QSAR shows that the CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane successfully reduces the biological toxicity of three antibiotics (TC, OTC, CIP) during the photocatalysis. In all, our work provides a universal immobilization technique of powdered photocatalysts to improve their wastewater purification efficiencies.
