Pt single atoms as electron shuttle for high-quantum-efficient photocatalytic methanol dehydrogenation

Guopeng Zhu,Tianye Wang,Shaoqing Zhang,Xiutao Yang,Weifeng Liu,Xueyuan Wang,Nengchao Luo,Hongwen Yu

Photocatalytic methanol dehydrogenation affords HCHO and H 2 , capable of replacing the current methanol oxidation technologies for HCHO production. However, the charge transfer from bulk of photocatalyst to methanol and intermediates has barrier, leading to quantum efficiency far from 100 %. Herein, we synthesized TiO 2 -supported Pt single atoms (Pt 1 /TiO 2 ) that works as an electron shuttle to promote electron extraction from the bulk of TiO 2 and transfer it to protons. The Pt 1 supported on TiO 2 reduces the migration energy of electrons from 0.57 to 0.23 eV, thus fostering electron extraction from bulk of TiO 2 to surface. Electrons trapped on Pt 1 active sites can be transferred to protons for H 2 evolution. Therefore, the Pt 1 /TiO 2 produces H 2 and HCHO from methanol with formation rates of 102.8 and 80.4 mmol g catal. −1  h −1 , respectively, which are 1.7 folds of Pt/TiO 2 prepared by an impregnation method. The quantum efficiency of methanol dehydrogenation is 52 % at ambient temperature and increased to 84 % at 75 °C. This study offers fundamental insights into charge extraction and transfer mechanisms for dehydrogenation reactions.

Pt/single-stranded DNA/graphene nanocomposite with improved catalytic activity and CO tolerance

Mengzhu Li,Yuxia Pan,Xiaoyu Guo,Yinhua Liang,Yiping Wu,Ying Wen,Haifeng Yang

ssDNA was employed to readily disperse reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form ssDNA–RGO composites, which could be used as a superior support to expediently electrodeposit Pt to synthesize ssDNA–RGO/cotton-flower-like-Pt nanocomposites (ssDNA–RGO/cf-Pt). The formation of cotton-flower-like-Pt clusters was due to the assistance of nitrogen atoms and phosphate groups in ssDNA. The catalytic activity of the ssDNA–RGO/cf-Pt nanocomposite for methanol oxidation was 2.5 fold of RGO/Pt and 3.8 fold of commercial Pt NPs. The outstanding catalytic activity of this novel catalyst was attributed to the very large surface of the highly conductive ssDNA–RGO and cotton-flower-like-Pt clusters with an open structure. The latter was beneficial for mass transfer. In addition, the excellent ability of the ssDNA–RGO/cf-Pt nanocomposite against CO poisoning was found and the anti-poisoning ratio (If/Ib) of ssDNA–RGO/cf-Pt was 1.75 fold larger than those of RGO/Pt and commercial Pt NPs. The elevated oxidation of CO in the adsorption state may be due to ssDNA providing abundant oxygen groups as well as the residual oxygen species in the RGO. A possible mechanism for the improved catalytic activity and CO tolerance was deduced according to UV-visible, Raman, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) results.

Enhanced performance of conjugated polymer-based ternary memory devices by embedding Pt nanoparticles

Zhaohua He,Haifeng Yu,Yanting Du,Meng Gao,Shuhong Wang,Cheng Wang

Organic ternary memory devices show higher data storage density than common inorganic binary memory, however, facing the challenge of the low ON/OFF current ratio and high threshold voltage hinders their application. Herein, a conjugated polymer , poly[2,7-(9,9-dioctyl)-fluorene- alt -12 H-benz[5,6]-isoindole[2,1- a ] benzimidazole-12-one] (PFBIM), was synthesized and applied to fabricate memristors by spin coating . The PFBIM-based memristors showed unique ternary memory behavior, but their ON/OFF ratio is just 9.6 × 10 3 and the threshold voltage is − 1.35 V. To improve memory performance, the strategy of polymer film blends Pt NPs was implemented. Impressively, enhanced performance was achieved when the PFBIM-based memristor incorporated 5% Pt NPs, the ON/OFF ratio increased to 1.37 × 10 5 and the threshold voltage decreased to − 0.65 V. The ternary switching mechanism and the role of Pt NPs on enhanced memristor performance were studied. This work may provide useful information to ameliorate performance and promote the further advance of ternary memory devices.

Hexagonal Cu2O/Pt for photothermal and photo-Fenton synergistic degradation of dye contaminant

Pengshan Guo,En Li,Qingnan Zhang,Xinyue Yan,Jinghua Li

The rising pollution of aquatic ecosystems due to industrial dyes makes it essential to create efficient strategies for remediation. In this study, we synthesized an unusual Cu 2 O/Pt photocatalytic Fenton-like catalyst through heterojunction engineering and high-temperature modification of cuprous oxide, with platinum nanoparticles serving as a cocatalyst to enhance charge separation and catalytic efficiency. Under near-infrared light irradiation, the Cu 2 O/Pt catalyst exhibited remarkable photothermal performance, rapidly achieving elevated temperatures that further accelerated the degradation of methylene blue. degradation experiments indicated that the Cu 2 O/Pt catalyst achieved over 99 % removal efficiency, outperforming pure Cu 2 O by facilitating greater hydroxyl radical generation through enhanced hydrogen peroxide decomposition. The enhanced degradation efficiency is attributed to the synergistic effect between Cu 2 O and Pt, which not only expands the effective pH range but also ensures the reproducibility and durability of the catalytic process. The results underscore the Cu 2 O/Pt system's advantageous potential for practical applications in wastewater treatment, offering an effective and sustainable approach to reduce industrial water pollution.

Mesoporous Pt@PtM (M = Co, Ni) cage-bell nanostructures toward methanol electro-oxidation

Shuli Yin,Ziqiang Wang,Chunjie Li,Hongjie Yu,Kai Deng,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Liang Wang,Hongjing Wang

Rational design of Pt-based nanostructures with a controllable morphology and composition is vital for electrocatalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a dual-template strategy to fabricate well-defined cage-bell nanostructures including a Pt core and a mesoporous PtM (M = Co, Ni) bimetallic shell (Pt@mPtM (M = Co, Ni) CBs). Owing to their unique nanostructure and bimetallic properties, Pt@mPtM (M = Co, Ni) CBs show higher catalytic activity, better durability and stronger CO tolerance for the methanol oxidation reaction than commercial Pt/C. This work provides a general method for convenient preparation of cage-bell nanostructures with a mesoporous bimetallic shell, which have high promising potential for application in electrocatalytic fields.

3D-Printed PLLA/Pt–GO Scaffolds with Synergistic Photodynamic and Photothermal Antibacterial Activity

Cijun Shuai,Bin Zeng,Xiuwen Gao,Gao Pan,Pan He,Fangwei Qi,Shuping Peng

Platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) as nanozymes presented great potential in photodynamic antibacterial applications. However, the tendency for aggregation and the presence of bacterial biofilms limit their photodynamic antibacterial efficacy. Herein, Pt NPs were grown in situ on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to prepare Pt–GO nanohybrids, which were subsequently blended with poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) powder and fabricated into PLLA/Pt–GO scaffolds via laser 3D printing technology. On one hand, GO possessed a high specific surface area, providing a large space for the uniform deposition of Pt NPs. On the other hand, GO had excellent photothermal properties, which not only enhanced the permeability of the bacterial biofilm but also further improved the photodynamic catalytic effect of Pt NPs. Results demonstrated that the scaffold exhibited favorable photothermal stability and transformation efficiency under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Methylene blue degradation and o-phenylenediamine oxidation assays demonstrated that the scaffold exhibited peroxidase-like activity. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that under NIR light irradiation, the PLLA/Pt–GO group exhibited decreased bacterial colonies, damaged bacterial morphology, enhanced biofilm permeability, elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and increased bacterial protein leakage compared to the ice bath-cooled PLLA/Pt–GO group. These findings indicated that thermal energy enhanced biofilm permeability, facilitated the entry of ROS into bacterial cells, induced protein leakage, and ultimately resulted in bacterial death. In summary, the scaffold demonstrated antibacterial efficacy rates of 94.15% and 91.42% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. Therefore, this study holds promise for providing therapeutic strategies for implant-related infections.

Observation of induction period and oxygenated intermediates in methane oxidation over Pt catalyst

Kuo Yang,Jinzhe Li,Zhongkui Zhao,Zhongmin Liu

Selective oxidation of methane is one of the most attractive routes for methane to chemicals. However, mechanistic understanding and avoiding over-oxidation have great challenges because of its very rapid reaction rate. Herein, a capillary micro-reaction system was introduced to monitor the initial stage of methane oxidation over platinum. For the first time, an induction period is observed, during which oxygenated intermediates, such as methanol, acetone, methyl methoxy acetate, etc., are detected. Induction period can be shortened by methane pretreatment at 600°C, which generates highly active species containing unsaturated bonds. Combined these findings and observations of in situ characterizations, the evolution route of methane oxidation over Pt is prosed, i.e., the reaction starts from the formation of initial species containing Pt-C bond, followed by the generation of oxygenated intermediates, and ended with the over-oxidation of the intermediates to CO/CO 2 .

Ascorbic acid assisted bio-synthesis of Pd-Pt nanoflowers with enhanced electrochemical properties.

Tareque Odoom-Wubah,Zhenzhen Li,Zhou Lin,Tingting Tang,Daohua Sun,Jiale Huang,Qingbiao Li

Bimetallic Pd-Pt nanoflowers (Pd-Pt NFs) of varying sizes (20–60   nm) were synthesized through the concurrent reduction of Pd(NO 3 ) 2 and K 2 PtCl 4 using Cinnamomum camphora ( C. camphora ) leaf extract assisted by ascorbic acid (AA). C.Camphora acted as both a co-reducing agent and a green template in the synthesis protocol providing a fast, simple, green and cost-effective means of producing the Pd-Pt NFs. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to confirm the Pd-Pt NFs formation. FT-IR analysis showed that biomolecules such as polyphenols and flavonoids were responsible for the reduction while stretching vibration bands from C H, C C , O H, and C O O acted as capping agents. The as-formed Pd-Pt NFs showed excellent performance and stability in the electro-oxidation of ethanol in alkaline media. Electro-catalytic performance increased with Pt content, while addition of Pd increased stability. The PdPt 3 NFs presented the best performance with a mass activity of 1.43   A   mg −1 metal , 5.72, 4.93, 2.27, 1.27, 11 and 4.6% higher than the Pd, Pt, Pd 3 Pt, and PdPt NFs, and commercial Pt and Pd-black respectively. However, it was more prone to poisoning, with an I f /I r value of 0.78 compared to 1.37 for Pd 3 Pt NFs.

Electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis catalyzed by mesoporous nickel oxide nanosheets loaded with Pt nanoparticles

Wei Xiong,Min Zhou,Hao Li,Zhao Ding,Da Zhang,Yaokang Lv

ABSTRACT Owing to its cost-effectiveness and adjustable eight-electron distribution in the 3 d orbital, nickel oxide (NiO) is considered an effective electrocatalyst for an ambient electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, because of the low conductivity of the transition metal oxide electrocatalyst, its application in this field is limited. In this study, we found that the doping of NiO nanosheets with a small amount (3–10 nm) of Pt nanoparticles (Pt/NiO-NSs) leads to considerable improvements in the Faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH 3 yield compared with those obtained using pure NiO, breaking the common perception that commercial Pt-based electrocatalysts demonstrate little potential for NRR due to their high hydrogen evolution tendency. In a 0.1 mol/L Na 2 SO 4 solution at −0.2 V vs. RHE, a typical Pt/NiO-2 sample exhibits an optimum electrochemical NH 3 yield of 20.59 μg h –1 mg –1 cat. and an FE of 15.56%, which are approximately 5 and 3 times greater, respectively, than those of pure NiO nanosheets at the same applied potential. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Pt in Pt/NiO-NSs exist as Pt 0 , Pt 2+ , and Pt 4+ and that high-valence Pt ions are more electropositive, thereby favoring chemisorption and the activation of N 2 molecules. Density function theory calculations showed that the d -band of Pt nanoparticles supported on NiO is significantly tuned compared to that of pure Pt, affording a more favorable electronic structure for NRR. The results of this study show that Pt can be an effective NRR electrochemical catalyst when loaded on an appropriate substrate. Most importantly, it provides a new synthetic avenue for the fabrication of highly active Pt-based NRR electrocatalysts.

Structural origin of hierarchical chirality in Pt@Au nanostructures with step-rich surfaces

Luan Xiaoxi,Wu Fengxia,Tian Yu,Li Fenghua,Gao Wenping,Xu Guobao,Zheng Guangchao,Wong Wing-Leung,Wong Kwok-Yin,Niu Wenxin

Hierarchical chirality, arising from the coupling of chiral surfaces, units, assemblies, and overall architectures, represents a structural paradigm with profound implications for enantioselective catalysis, molecular recognition, and chiral photonics. Unraveling and regulating its formation across multiple length scales is crucial for understanding structure–property relationships and guiding the design of chiral nanomaterials. Here, we present a strategy for constructing step-rich Pt@Au nanostructures with multilevel chirality. Using octahedral Pt nanoframes as templates and cysteine as a chiral inducer, rotated and oriented Au triangular pyramids with high-Miller-index chiral facets are generated, leading to the formation of fishbone-like, pinwheel-like, and tilted-step surface features that collectively constitute a hierarchical chiral nanostructure. Mechanistic studies identify cysteine and Pt nanoframes as indispensable for directing step formation and hierarchical growth, thereby defining the overall morphology and chiroplasmonic responses. Leveraging the abundant chiral surface area and the strong chiral electromagnetic nearfields generated under plasmonic excitation, we fabricate monolayer-modified electrodes based on the Pt@Au nanostructures that enabled plasmon-enhanced enantioselective electrochemical recognition of penicillamine enantiomers and determination of their enantiomeric purity. This strategy clarifies the origin of multilevel chirality in step-rich architectures and establishes a structural engineering approach for designing chiral nanomaterials with enhanced near-field properties for enantioselective recognition.

Trace Cu-Regulated Pt Active Sites Confined in Nano-Islands for Furfural Hydrogenation

Huabin Lian,Lin Zheng,Enwei Wang,Shuai Wang,Rongyao Wang,Daowei Gao,Riming Hu,Chunsheng Li,Guozhu Chen

Comprehensive Summary Nanostructured island-confined metal catalysts offer remarkable stability; however, it is challenge to balance the activity and selectivity in multi-step reactions owing to the limited electronic modifications for individual metal systems. Here, we develop a strategy by integrating “nano-island confinement” with “dilute alloying”, in which ~0.7 nm Pt 95 Cu 5 dilute alloy clusters are confined onto CeO ₓ nano-islands. As expected, this confinement not only suppresses metal migration and leaching, but also tailors the surface electronic structure via strong Pt-Cu coupling to regulate substrate adsorption and activation. Various characterizations reveal that the as-designed catalytic system maintains abundant active sites because of the nearly full exposure of Pt, and more importantly, downshifts the Pt d-band center through d-d hybridization within Pt-Cu dilute alloy. As a result, this configuration optimizes furfural adsorption behavior, and favors its planar adsorption instead of vertical one. DFT calculation further shows that planar-adsorption-driven hydrogenation remarkably enhances the reaction kinetics by reducing the barrier for FurCH₂O formation and accelerating proton-coupled electron transfer step. Compared with nano-island confined Pt catalyst, the confined Pt-Cu dilute alloy increases the TOF for furfural conversion from 849.3 to 1008.7 h –1 and for furfuryl alcohol from 383.9 to 657.7 h –1 , and demonstrates remarkable stability under demanding conditions (150 °C, 3 MPa H 2 ). These results demonstrate that the nano-islands confined dilute alloy strategy is promising for effectively maintaining metal stability and adjusting activity-selectivity balance.

Micropillar-patterned electrodes to enhance mass transfer in low Pt-loaded fuel cells

Yuan Wang,Linhao Fan,Yongkang Luan,Qing Du,Yalin Zhang,Xing Li,Meng Ni,Fang Liu,Zhongjun Hou,Kui Jiao

The practical application of fuel cell vehicles is hindered by poor performance and durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), especially at low Pt loading and low relative humidity conditions, owing to limited proton transport properties and electrochemical reaction surface areas of conventional electrode design. This study proposes a patterned design with ordered ionomer micropillars as an alternative electrode structure to enhance the performance and durability of PEMFCs with low Pt loading (0.1 mg cm −2 ) across a wide range of humidities. Compared to conventional electrodes, the patterned electrodes achieved up to 29% peak power density improvement under low-humidity (50% relative humidity) conditions. Pore-scale multiphysics modeling demonstrated that the ionomer micropillars inside the patterned electrodes transform the distorted transport pathways of conventional, randomly distributed catalyst layers into ordered, short-range channels for rapid oxygen and proton delivery, which significantly enhances the oxygen reduction reaction rate. Moreover, the patterned electrodes exhibited improved durability, showing lower performance loss, compared to conventional electrodes, after accelerated stress testing across a wide range of humidities. Strategic redesign of the ionomer micropillars demonstrated that the H1.8W0.38 electrode (with a micropillar height of 1.8 μm and width of 0.38 μm), with its increased penetration depth and appropriately adjusted width, achieves optimal performance by minimizing oxygen and proton transport resistances by 6% and 14%, respectively, compared to the pre-optimization (H1.5W0.38) electrode, under low-humidity (50% relative humidity) conditions. The proposed patterned electrode architecture offers a promising approach for advancing the development of high-performance, cost-effective, and durable fuel cells.
