Recently, tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing carbon-based metal-free catalysts as an alternative to metal-based catalysts for remediation of emerging contaminants. However, further investigations have demonstrated that the durability of carbocatalysts is poor. Therefore, it is extremely desirable to seek a novel metal-free catalyst with high efficiency and superb stability. Herein, we first discovered that amorphous boron (A-boron) can be used as a metal-free catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to produce free radicals for effective degradation of bisphenol S (BPS), which is a newly-occurring estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical. It exhibited outstanding catalytic activity and superior stability as comparing to metal-based and metal-free carbon-based catalysts. Moreover, many other typical organic pollutants in water such as bisphenol F, sulfamethoxazole, rhodamine B and methyl orange can also be effectively decomposed in A-boron/PMS oxidative system. The effects of reaction parameters on BPS degradation were systematically investigated. The catalytic oxidation mechanism was proposed. The intriguing catalytic feature of A-boron discovered in this study will provide new opportunities for the future development of A-boron based materials with promising applications in water remediation.

This work investigates the influence of synthetic C-S-H/polycarboxylate(PCE) nanocomposites (CPNs) on the hydration and properties of hydrated cement pastes. HPEG-PCE copolymers exhibiting side chain length of 45 ethylene oxide (EO) units was utilized to synthesize CPNs by precipitating C-S-H from Na 2 SiO 3 and Ca(NO 3 ) 2 in the PCE solution. A Box-Behnken Design (BBD) for the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to statistically optimize the sizes of the resultant. The prepared CPNs were characterized by particle size distribution (PSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) and thermo gravimetric/derivative thermo gravimetric (TG/DTG) analyses. The influence of CPNs on the hydration properties of cement were assessed and discussed in terms of hydration kinetics, mechanical properties, phase composition and pore structure analysis. The experimental results showed that the optimum synthetic parameters, an experimental temperature of 30.1 °C, reactant flow velocity of 0.63 ml/min and initial volume of PCE solution of 28.5 ml, produced CPNs with a minimum size of 329.12 nm. It was demonstrated that PCE polymers were either grafted on the surface or partially intercalated in the interlayer regions of C-S-H, and their introduction also increased the distance between C-S-H interlayers. Cement hydration was significantly promoted as a result of an increased heat release, even at low CPNs content. The early compressive strength of the mortar significantly improved with increasing CPNs content due to the accelerated cement hydration of the CPNs: the 0.6 wt.% CPNs content improved the compressive strength by 18.97%. Moreover, the inclusion of CPNs is advantageous for pore modification: the total porosity decreased by 25.77% after 3 days. Finally, phase composition analysis confirmed that no new crystalline phase was produced upon CPNs addition.

Poly(ionic liquid)s have been demonstrated as high efficient CO 2 absorbents. In the current study, a kind of poly(ionic liquid)s, Poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethyl] trimethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (P[MATMA][BF 4 ]) was used to functionalize graphene oxide (GO). The hybrid in which P[MATMA][BF 4 ] was covalently bonded on GO platelets was prepared by a simple method, that is, traditional radical polymerization. The characterizations based on transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated the graft of P[MATMA][BF 4 ] on GO. N 2 adsorption measurements indicated that P[MATMA][BF 4 ] also greatly increased the specific surface area of GO. Due to the higher specific surface area and the CO 2 affinity of P[MATMA][BF 4 ], the GO-P[MATMA][BF 4 ] hybrid exhibited a much higher CO 2 adsorption capacity compared with GO, GO-NH 2 , and P[MATMA][BF 4 ]. Their study showed that the combinations of poly(ionic liquid)s and GO could be promising CO 2 absorbents. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 44592.

A hollow zeolite encapsulated Rh catalyst Rh@H-S-1 with an “eggshell” structure was prepared using the method of organic alkali treatment and recrystallization. Compared with catalysts with directly encapsulated Rh@S-1 and surface impregnated Rh/S-1, this catalyst exhibited both superior activity and a higher TOF value in hydroformylation of 1-hexene due to the high dispersion of Rh and high diffusion. The Rh element did not need to be reduced in the preparation, and it was in situ reduced by the syngas. The content of lower valence Rh δ+ gradually increased with the reaction procedure and played as an active center. The low oxidized state Rh + or Rh δ+ in the form of Rh(CO) 2 are proposed as active sites in hydroformylation, which were generated under the synergistic effect between CO and H 2 . Importantly, the hollow encapsulated catalyst effectively decreased Rh leaching to 0.1 ppm and showed better stability compared with the impregnated Rh/S-1 catalyst.

This work illustrates the novelty of double S-scheme ZnS/ZnO/CdS ternary heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient photocatalytic activity. The sample with optimal CdS content, ZnS/ZnO/CdS-14% (ZZC14%), displayed the maximum H 2 evolution rate of 4.1 mmol·g ‒1 ·h ‒1 . The maximum photocatalytic performance was approximately 2 and 13 times higher than their corresponding counterparts, ZnS/CdS and ZnO/ZnS, respectively. A high AQE of 19.8% under 420 nm was obtained. Additionally, the slight changes in H 2 evolution activities and retentions of crystal structures after six successive cycles indicate the stability of the photocatalyst. In accordance with the theoretical calculations and experimental results, the remarkable enhancement in photocatalytic activity is attributed to fast electron transfer and separation as well as the intimate contact due to mutual interaction between S-scheme. This work highlights an innovative approach to constructing a dual S-scheme photocatalytic system with high separation and fast migration capabilities of photogenerated charge carriers for splitting water to produce hydrogen. The commercialization of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries faces several challenges, including poor conductivity, unexpected volume expansion, and continuous sulfur loss from the cathode due to redox shuttling. In this study, we introduce a novel polymer via a simple cross-linking between poly(ether-thioureas) (PETU) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)- poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as a bifunctional binder for Li-S batteries (devotes as “PPTU”). Compared to polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), as-prepared PPTU exhibits significantly higher electrical conductivity, facilitating electrochemical reactions. Additionally, PPTU demonstrates effective adsorption of lithium polysulfides, leading to improved cycling stability by suppressing the shuttling effect. We investigate this behavior by monitoring morphological changes at the cell interface using synchrotron X-ray tomography. Cells with PPTU binders exhibit remarkable rate performance, desired reversibility, and excellent cycling stability even under stringent bending and twisting conditions. Our work represents promising progress in functional polymer binder development for Li-S batteries.

Eucalyptol is one of the major insecticidal active ingredients in a variety of plant essential oils, and has good killing and avoidance effects on Tribolium castaneum . The presence of detoxifying enzymes glutathione S-transferase (GST) in T. castaneum makes it resistant to a variety of insecticides. However, whether GST is involved in regulating the sensitivity of eucalyptol by T. castaneum is not well understood. In our previous study, a glutathione S-transferase, TcGSTu1 , was significantly up-regulated in RNA sequencing data when T. castaneum was exposed to eucalyptol. Therefore, in this study, the role of TcGSTu1 in the regulating the sensitivity of T. castaneum to eucalyptol was studied. The enzyme activities of GST and the transcription levels of TcGSTu1 were significantly increased following stimulation with eucalyptol. When using RNA interference technology knockdown TcGSTu1 heightens the sensitivity of T. castaneum to eucalyptol, demonstrating a link between TcGSTu1 and eucalyptol detoxification metabolism. Furthermore, TcGSTu1 is expressed in all developmental stages of T. castaneum , with higher expression levels observed particularly in the late egg stage. There was significant expression of TcGSTu1 in various tissues of different organisms, including larval head, fat body, and adult head. This observation indicated a possible connection between high TcGSTu1 expression and eucalyptol detoxification. The present findings suggest that TcGSTu1 may be involved in regulating the sensitivity and response of T. castaneum to treatment with eucalyptol, providing new research insight into pest control.

In this study, imidazole-based poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are introduced into acid-treated mesoporous silica by solid grinding and subsequent thermal polymerization methods. The purpose of treating mesoporous silica with hydrochloric acid is to increase the number of hydroxyl groups on the surface to fix more PILs. Because of the synergism of enhanced hydrophilicity and the mesoporous structure, the synthesized composite materials exhibited excellent capacities to adsorb and transport water vapor molecules and are suitable for low-humidity sensing applications. In the 7%–33% relative humidity (RH) range, the response of the as-prepared sensor reached 806% with a short response/recovery time of 8/13 s.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery, as a promising next-generation high-energy-density battery, suffers from lithium polysulfides (LPSs) shuttle and Li dendrites issues. Porous crystalline framework-based membranes as separator can effectively absorb and restrain LPSs but without precise structural design principal exploration and mechanism studies. Herein, bio-inspired 1D oriented lithium-ion transport channels with molecular negatively charged PO 3 (−1) have been developed in hybrid tetrazole frameworks for promoting the transmission of Li + ions. The theoretical calculations and in situ spectroscopy demonstrated the higher binding energy and inhibited diffusion of LPSs in PO 3 . The assembled PP@PO 3 Janus separator in Li-S coin cell delivered a high initial capacity of 1410.9 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C and a low attenuation rate of 0.038% per cycle over 500 cycles at 5 C. Besides, the high capacities of 862, 542 and 409 mAh g −1 based on high-sulfur-loading cathodes of 2.6, 3.8 and 5.0 mg cm −2 at 0.5 C were achieved, respectively. Moreover, the punch battery of PO 3 @PP separator with S-cathode of 1.2 mg cm −2 has been developed for demonstrating its potentials commercial application, which displays impressive capacity of 873.4 mAh g −1 with the retention of ∼78.9% over 50 cycles.

Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as significant fluorescent nanomaterials due to their bright, stable fluorescence, good biocompatibility, facile synthesis, etc. They are widely used in various scientific and practical applications, particularly in combination with mesoporous, florescent, or magnetic nanomaterials to enhance their properties. Recent research has focused on employing CDs and their composites in drug analysis, drug loading, biological imaging, disease diagnosis, and temperature sensing, with a growing interest in their biological and medical applications. In this study, we synthesized blue-fluorescent S, N-co-doped CDs (cys-CDs) using hydrothermal synthesis with L-cysteine and sodium citrate. These resulting cys-CD particles were approximately 3.8 nm in size and exhibited stable fluorescence with a quantum yield of 0.66. By leveraging the fluorescence quenching of the cys-CDs, we developed a rapid and sensitive method for baicalein detection, achieving high sensitivity in the low micromolar range with a detection limit for baicalein of 33 nM. Our investigation revealed that the fluorescence-quenching mechanism involved static quenching and inner-filter effect components. Overall, cys-CDs proved to be effective for accurate quantitative baicalein detection in real-world samples.

The development of non-viral gene delivery systems often requires balancing transfection efficiency and cytotoxicity, particularly when using cationic polymers. Poly(2-hydroxypropenimine) (PHP), with its hydroxyl groups, presents a more biocompatible alternative to traditional polymers such as polyethyleneimine (PEI). In this study, we explored the potential to enhance PHP’s transfection capabilities and reduce its cytotoxicity through a targeted fluorination strategy. Specifically, fluorinated alkyl groups were grafted onto PHP via an ethylene oxide ring-opening reaction, with the reaction conditions optimized for temperature, solvent, and time to ensure efficiency. Transfection experiments using HEK 293 cells demonstrated that fluorinated PHP variants, especially PHP-FH8 16 , significantly improved transfection efficiency, achieving a 75.1 % gene expression rate at an N/P ratio of 2, compared to 44.0 % for unmodified PHP. The transfection experiments in Hela cells also showed substantial transfection efficiency. The gene expression rate was 53.2 % at an N/P ratio of 2 compared to 31.6 % for unmodified PHP. Notably, the fluorinated polymers exhibited lower cytotoxicity and increased serum stability, which suggests their potential as safer gene delivery systems. This study carefully evaluates the feasibility of using fluorinated cationic polymers as next-generation gene delivery vectors, balancing efficacy and safety. It underscores the strategic application of fluorination technology in developing modified polymer vectors that could lead to more efficient and safer non-viral gene therapy solutions.

Exploring efficient photocatalysts holds significant importance for the prevention and treatment of antibiotic pollution. This research reports a 2D/2D CeO 2 /BiOCl S-scheme photocatalyst constructed by mesoporous CeO 2 and BiOCl nanosheets (NSs). Efficient charge separation and transfer was achieved by the synergistic effect of large-area contact and S-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which significantly enhanced the photocatalytic performance of CeO 2 /BiOCl. Experimental results demonstrated that the CeO 2 /BiOCl photocatalyst displayed superior photocatalytic activity to the individual components, which could efficiently eliminate four types of antibiotics, namely tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), doxycycline (DOC), and oxytetracycline (OTC) under UV light irradiation. Particularly, the sample of 0.4CeO 2 /BiOCl exhibited the highest catalytic efficiency, with a TC degradation rate constant of 0.01524 min −1 , which was 1.85 and 22.74 times higher than that of single CeO 2 and BiOCl, respectively. Moreover, liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) analysis is employed to reveal the degradation pathways of TC. This work offers an insightful idea for the fabrication of novel S-scheme photocatalysts applied in environmental purification.
