Ni3S2 nanosheets doped with tin (Sn) grown on nickel foam (Sn–Ni3S2/NF) through a facile hydrothermal process were found to be superior water-splitting electrocatalysts. As for overall water splitting (OWS), when the current density is 10 mA cm–2, the required voltage is only 1.46 V. Meanwhile, it exhibits a large current density property and long-time stability (>60 h current–time tests) for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In order to reach the current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm–2, Sn–Ni3S2/NF needs overpotentials of 0.17 and 0.57 V for HER, and 0.27 and 0.58 V for OER, respectively. The water-splitting property of Sn–Ni3S2/NF is much better than that of pure Ni3S2/NF or even 20 wt % Pt/C/NF and RuO2/NF. Furthermore, Sn–Ni3S2/NF showed a higher turnover frequency at different potentials, with ∼100% Faraday efficiency for both O2 and H2. The improved activity of Sn–Ni3S2/NF activity for water-splitting is attributed to the doping of Sn, which enhanced the intrinsic activity of Sn–Ni3S2/NF for OWS. This article not only provides a new efficient and stable catalyst for OWS, but also proposes an interface design principle for NF-based high-performance water-splitting materials.

A facile approach to prepare SnO2/rGO (reduced graphene oxide) hybrid nanoparticles by a direct redox reaction between graphene oxide (GO) and tin powder was developed. Since no acid was used, it is an environmentally friendly green method. The SnO2/rGO hybrid nanoparticles were characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The microstructure of the SnO2/rGO was observed with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The tin powder efficiently reduced GO to rGO, and the Sn was transformed to SnO2 nanoparticles (∼45 nm) that were evenly distributed on the rGO sheets. The SnO2/rGO hybrid nanoparticles were then coated on an interdigital electrode to fabricate a humidity sensor, which have an especially good linear impedance response from 11% to 85% relative humidity.

To develop next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with novel designs, reconsidering traditional materials with enhanced cycle stability and excellent rate performance is crucial. We herein report the successful preparation of three-dimensional (3D) composites in which spilt Sn–Cu alloys are uniformly dispersed in an amorphous carbon nanofiber matrix (Sn–Cu–CNFs) via one-step carbonization-alloying reactions. The spilt Sn–Cu alloys consist of active Cu 6 Sn 5 and inactive Cu 3 Sn, and are controllable by optimization of the carbonization-alloying reaction temperature. The 3D carbon nanofiber framework allowed the Sn–Cu–CNFs to be used directly as anodes in lithium-ion batteries without the requirement for polymer binders or electrical conductors. These composite electrodes exhibited a stable cyclability with a discharge capacity of 400 mA h g −1 at a high current density of 1.0 A g −1 after 1200 cycles, as well as an excellent rate capability, which could be attributed to the improved electrochemical properties of the Sn–Cu–CNFs provided by the buffering effect of Cu 3 Sn and the 3D carbon nanofiber framework. This one-step synthesis is expected to be widely applicable in the targeted structural design of traditional tin-based anode materials.

Few-layer tin (Sn)-based nanosheets (NSs) with a thickness of ≈2.5 nm are successfully prepared using a modified liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method. Here the first exploration of photo-electrochemical (PEC) and nonlinear properties of Sn NSs is presented. The results demonstrate that the PEC properties are tunable under different experimental conditions. Additionally, Sn NSs are shown to exhibit a unique self-powered PEC performance, maintaining a good long-term stability for up to 1 month. Using electron spin resonance, active species, such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH), superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ), and holes (h + ), are detected during operations, providing a deeper understanding of the working mechanism. Furthermore, measurements of nonlinear response reveal that Sn NSs can be effective for all-optical modulation, as it enables the realization of all-optical switching through excitation spatial cross-phase modulation (SXPM). These findings present new research insights and potential applications of Sn NSs in optoelectronics.

Currently, inhomogeneous distribution of Zn2+ on the surface of the Zn anode is still the essential reason for dendrite formation and unsatisfactory stability of zinc ion batteries. Given the merits of strong interaction between Sn and Zn, as well as a low nucleation barrier during Zn deposition, the combination of metallic Sn with carbon material is expected to improve the deposition of zinc ions and inhibit the growth of zinc dendrites by guiding the homogeneous plating/stripping of zinc on the electrode surface. In this article, zincophilic Sn nanoparticles with low nucleation barriers and strong interaction with Zn2+ were embedded into 3D N-doped carbon nanofibers using a simple electrostatic spinning technique. Accordingly, when serving as an artificial coating layer for the zinc metal anode, an ultrastable Sn@NCNFs@Zn||Sn@NCNFs@Zn symmetric cell can be achieved for over 3500 h with a low nucleation overpotential of 29.1 mV. Significantly, the full cell device assembled with the as-prepared anode and MnO2 cathode exhibits desirable electrochemical behaviors. Moreover, this simple method could be extended to other metal–carbon composites, and to ensure ease in scaling up as required. Such significant approach can provide an effective strategy for the design of high-performance zinc anodes.

We report here the synthesis and characterization of two endohedral Zintl-ion clusters, [Fe4Sn18]4− and [Fe4Pb18]4−, which contain rhombic Fe4 cores. The Fe–Fe bond lengths are all below 2.5 Å, distinctly shorter than in the corresponding Cu clusters, indicating the presence of Fe–Fe bonding. Subtle differences in the structure of the Fe4 core between the two clusters suggest that the change in tetrel element causes a change in electronic ground state, with a very short Fe–Fe bond length of 2.328 Å present across the diagonal of the rhombus in the lead case.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal supports for the synthesis of porous composite catalysts. In the present study, Sn-Bi bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Sn-Bi-MOFs) supported silver-doped phosphotungstic acid (AgPW) catalysts (AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC and AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 )) were successfully synthesized via a simple in situ impregnation method, which was subsequently applied to catalyze esterification for the production of biodiesel from oleic acid (OA). The physico-chemical properties of the prepared composite catalysts underwent comprehensive analysis through XRD, FTIR, N 2 physisorption, SEM, EDX, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR, TG, and XPS techniques, confirming the successful impregnation of AgPW on the Sn-Bi-MOFs framework. Among the catalysts tested, AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ) exhibited the better catalytic activity than that of Sn-Bi-BDC, Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ), and AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC, reaching 91.6% of OA conversion with the methanol:OA molar ratio of 20:1 and the catalyst quantity of 0.2 g at 130°C for 4 h. The high activity of AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ) is attributed to the available multiscale pore structure, high acidity, and the synergistic action of the Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites. Additionally, the esterification with AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ) followed the first-order reaction kinetic model, with an E a of 34.5 kJ/mol. Moreover, the recyclability of the composites was also assessed, demonstrating sustained catalytic activity after four reuses. This approach showed a potential for sustainable and efficient energy production through bimetallic MOFs-based composite catalysts.

How to obtain a high-strength and corrosion resistance of Al/Sn/Al joint has been a longstanding goal for electronics industry. In this work, 6063Al was joined in the air by ultrasonic-assisted liquid phase diffusion bonding using a Sn filler metal . It was performed by applying an uninterrupted ultrasonic vibration at a heating temperature of 360 ℃, final obtaining a 6063Al joint without enriched-Sn. Under the action of ultrasonic vibrating, the breaking of oxide film , the diffusing of Sn, and dissolving of Al alloy occurred in sequence. It resulted in a transition of bonding interface from Sn/Al to an α-Al/α-Al bonding interface embedded a few Mg 2 Sn partials, after depleting Sn by grain boundary diffusion . The joints possessed a high strength coefficient of 86.7% of 6063Al base metal and 161.8% of soldering joint. The joint had a better corrosion resistance that the tensile strength only reduced 35.3% after a corroding of 72 h in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution in comparison with the soldering joints. Finally, the evolution of the interface structure and mechanism of improving corrosion resistance were discussed in detail. It is a promising technology for manufacturing high-reliable Al/Sn heterogeneous joints.

The production of high value-added chemicals and materials from renewable biomass is significant for the sustainable development of chemical industry. Herein, rice husk-based biogenic silica-anchored Sn-Co catalysts with adjustable activity are successfully prepared for biomass valorization. By regulating the pretreatment method and carbothermal reduction temperature of catalysts, the interaction between Co, Sn and biogenic silica can be regulated, thereby regulating the catalytic activity of the catalyst for cellulose hydrogenolysis. 50.7 % yield of acetol and 63.4 % yield of C3 products can be obtained. A series of characterizations show that the hydrothermal pretreatment in CoCl 2 solution promotes the combination of Co 2+ and biogenic silica, which inhibits the excessive doping of Sn 4+ and promotes the formation of Co 3 Sn 2 alloy. The Sn-O-Si and Co 3 Sn 2 species in 3Sn-5Co@RHC are the key active sites catalyzing glucose isomerization and fructose retro-aldol condensation. The intermediates experiments show that controlling the hydrolysis rate of cellulose to avoid excessive concentration of monosaccharide intermediates in the reaction system is crucial for inhibiting side reactions and improving the yield of acetol. The use of agroforestry waste-based catalytic materials for biomass conversion in this work can provide inspiration for exploiting the intrinsic characteristics of biomass to develop high value-added materials and chemicals.

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formic acid for industrial production necessitates not only high selectivity and conversion rate but also efficient CO2 utilization and minimal carbon loss to reduce overall production costs and energy consumption. Despite acidic CO2 reduction reaction being able to greatly alleviate carbon loss, it is often hindered by the aggressive hydrogen evolution reaction and the degradation of catalysts. This study puts forward an effective fluorination-hydrolysis protection mechanism for Sn-based electrocatalysts under acidic conditions. F-doped Sn oxides form a protective layer containing Sn oxide and fluoride, which safeguards the inner reduced Sn from significant degradation in acidic environments. Leveraging this strategy, we achieve impressive performance for formic acid generation without the adverse effects of a violent hydrogen evolution reaction during acidic electrolysis, attaining a Faradaic efficiency of 92% and a partial current density of 722 mA cm–2. This approach not only provides an additional avenue for preventing corrosion of Sn-based catalysts in acidic media but also significantly improves their performance in formic acid production.

Catalytic activity and hydrothermal stability are both crucial for the application of the selective catalytic reduction of NO x with NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR catalyst) in diesel vehicles. In this study, a tin (Sn)-modified Ce–Nb mixed-oxide catalyst was synthesized as an NH 3 -SCR catalyst for NO x emission control. After the introduction of Sn, both the NH 3 -SCR activity and the hydrothermal stability of the catalyst were remarkably promoted. Even after hydrothermal aging at 1000 °C, the developed Ce 1 Sn 2 Nb 1 O x catalyst achieved more than 90% NO x conversion at 325–500 °C. Various methods, including N 2 -physisorption, X-ray diffraction, in-situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, and density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the promotional effects induced by the Sn species. The characterization results showed that the addition of Sn not only promoted the formation of the Ce–Nb active phase but also improved its thermal stability, contributing to the excellent NH 3 -SCR performance and hydrothermal stability. This study provides an excellent sintering-resistance catalyst for the application of diesel engine NO x emission control.

The development of highly active and durable carbon-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of critical importance. In this study, a heteroatom-doped carbon catalyst (FeSn-NFC) was synthesized through the chelation of Fe 3+ and dopamine hydrochloride, followed by Sn/F co-doping and carbonization. The resulting FeSn-NFC catalyst exhibits an ultrahigh specific surface area of 2387.9 m 2 g −1 , with micropores accounting for 79 % of its structure. The incorporation of Sn enhances the pyridinic nitrogen content and facilitates the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Electrochemical evaluations reveal exceptional ORR performance, with a half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.857 V and a minimal degradation (Δ E 1/2 = 11 mV) after accelerated aging tests. When integrated into a zinc-air battery, the FeSn-NFC catalyst delivers a peak power density of 217 mW cm −2 and an energy density of 880 Wh kg −1 (Zn), maintaining 93.2 % of its initial energy density after ∼115 h of continuous operation. This work offers a novel strategy for fabricating efficient, stable, and cost-effective ORR electrocatalysts, advancing the field of energy conversion technologies.
