Traditional analytical methods for evaluation of lipid oxidation often rely on costly and sophisticated equipment or complex operations, which limit their application in daily life. Aldehydes are important compounds that are produced during the process of lipid oxidation, thus a good type of indicator for edible oil freshness. Herein, a chitin-based colorimetric sensor for aldehydes was developed and applied in visual detection of edible oil oxidation. The sensor was prepared by using Congo red and hydroxylamine sulfate to be incorporated into TEMPO-oxidized chitin nanowhiskers (TOChN) films. The sensing mechanism is based on the specific reaction in which hydroxylamine sulfate reacts with aldehydes, releasing sulfuric acid and leading to a decrease of pH, and finally inducing obvious color change from red to blue of the Congo red in the sensor films. Hexanal was chosen as model aldehyde to investigate the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor films. As a result, the sensor films were highly sensitive and selective to aldehydes, with a detection limit of gaseous hexanal of 44.8 ppm and minor interference from other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Additionally, to evaluate the effectiveness of the sensor films, their responses for real samples were also investigated. Surprisingly, the oxidation status of all seven sunflower oil samples was correctly identified by the sensor films, suggesting great potential of the colorimetric sensor for visual detection of edible oil oxidation.

Conversion of digestate into biochar-based catalysts is an effective strategy for disposal and resource utilization. The active sites on biochar correlated with reactive species formation in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system directly. Clarifying the structure-performance relationship of digestate derived biochar in PMS system was essential for decomposition of contaminants. Herein, dairy manure digestate derived biochar (DMDB) was prepared for PMS activation and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The higher pyrolysis temperature could promote effective sites generation. Especially, the DMDB-800 catalyst exhibited excellent performance for PMS activation, achieving 90.2% degradation of SMX within 60 min. Based on the correlation analysis between log ( k ) values and active sites, defects, graphite N and C O were identified as dominant sites for PMS activation. The 1 O 2 oxidation and surface electron transfer were critical routes for SMX degradation. Besides, the degradation pathways of SMX were proposed according to DFT calculations and intermediates determination. The cleavage of the sulfonamide bond, hydroxylation of the benzene ring and oxidation of the amino group mainly occurred during SMX degradation. Overall, this study provides deep insights into the enhanced mechanism of tunable active sites on DMDBs for PMS activation, boosting the application of digestate biochar for water treatment in advanced oxidation systems.

The low sensitivity of fluorescent sensors limits the on-site and visual detection of seafood freshness. To address these issues, a novel intelligent nanofiber ratiometric fluorescent sensor, known as a BAsCNF, was designed using cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) produced by TEMPO oxidation (TO-CNFs) as the skeleton, and fluorescein isothiocyanate and proporphyrin IX modified nanofibers as the indicator and internal reference, respectively. TO-CNFs with nano-scale characteristics improved the air permeability of BAsCNF films, which endowed the sensor with excellent response performance to biogenic amines (BAs). Thus, the BAsCNF produced obvious colour changes from red to yellow-green in response to an increased concentration of BAs, where the limit of detection for BAs was as low as 1 ppm. Meanwhile, the discoloration trend of the BAsCNF in the freshness detection of shrimp and pork was consistent with the variation of the key indicators during storage, such as the content of total volatile basic nitrogen and the total number of colonies. The results suggest that the BAsCNF sensor possessed high detection accuracy and broad application prospects in the field of food safety.

Herein, carboxyl-rich cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were obtained through a designed TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) mediated oxidation process without any subsequent mechanical treatment, which was proved to be widely suitable for commonly used cellulosic sources, including fibril-like fibers and lignocellulose biomasses. CNC prepared from the acid-free process showed better dispersion stability, less aggregation, higher aqueous UV transmittance and crystallinity compared with that from sulfuric acid hydrolysis process. Furthermore, the residuals in the insoluble precipitate were further conducted ultrasonic treatment and extra CNC was obtained from the oxidized cotton and ramie cellulose while cellulose nanofibril (CNF) was extracted from rice straw and pine powder, attributing to their different native structures. The total yields of nanocelluloses (NCs) were up to 63.2–68.3 %, improving the utilization ratio of the raw materials. This work provided a widely applicable acid- and mechanic-free route in fabricating CNC with inherent carboxyl groups and described an understanding of the relationship between the native structure of raw materials and their products, which is beneficial for improving the application of NCs.

The utilizations of the complexes or coacervates of protein/polysaccharide generated by electrostatic interactions to stabilize Pickering emulsions have attracted increasing attentions. In this work, the effect of pH on the conformational states, interfacial adsorption characteristics and emulsifying properties of soybean protein isolate/oxidized bacterial cellulose (SPI/TOBC) complexes had been investigated. The spectroscopy analysis, including far-UV circular dichroism and intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy, was applied to evaluate protein conformational transitions. The interfacial adsorption behaviors were characterized by using adsorption kinetics and dilatational viscoelasticity modulus analysis. According to spectroscopy analysis, the addition of TOBC reduced surface hydrophobicity of SPI at pH 2–9, since the added TOBC partially hinder SPI unfolding to decrease the formation of unordered structure. Moreover, the interfacial adsorption property of SPI around isoelectric point (pI, pH 4.5) was improved in the presence of TOBC with increased balanced interfacial surface pressure (π) and diffusion rate constant ( K diff ) values, while the viscoelastic modulus had no significant difference, and the emulsions stabilized with SPI/TOBC complexes exhibited uniform droplets distributions and smaller sizes (<20 μm) at pH 4–5. This work would provide some guidance for the emulsions stabilized by using protein/polysaccharide complexes and has a practical application in food industry.

For the preparation of high-performance sound absorption materials, the fabrication of hierarchical pore structure has proven to be an effective way. Herein, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and melamine foam (MF) were combined by an environmentally friendly method for the first time, which endowed the final composite foam with both macropores and mesopores. The hierarchical pore structure was constructed by cyclic freezing-thawing, which enhanced the multiple reflections and micro-vibration of the sound waves, resulting in an obvious improvement in sound absorption performance. Specifically, compared with the unmodified MF, the sound absorption performance of composite foam with a thickness of 20 mm at 0.4 wt% CNF concentration showed an enhancement of about 107 % at 500 Hz and the NRC (noise reduction coefficient) had an improvement of 80 %. This work is expected to provide more inspiration for the design and preparation of high-performance sound absorption materials.

A sugarcane bagasse nanocellulose-based hydrogel was developed as a colourimetric freshness indicator for monitoring spoilage of chicken breast. Nanocellulose was prepared from sugarcane bagasse cellulose filaments by TEMPO-mediated oxidation, and then used to form a strong self-standing hydrogel matrix through Zn 2+ cross-linking. The hydrogel worked as a carrier for pH-responsive dyes (bromothymol blue/methyl red), which changed colour according to the freshness of the chicken sample. CO 2 levels were found to increase with the spoilage of chicken, relative to rising levels of micro-organisms. The indicator hydrogel optical colour changed from green to red on the third day, as the log CFU/g passed the limit of acceptability for human consumption and emission of complicated volatiles. This new design of colourimetric freshness indicator made with a nanocellulose hydrogel has a quick response to chicken spoilage and is expected to facilitate the utilisation of bagasse nanocellulose as a value-added material in intelligent packaging.

In this study, we reported an environmentally benign method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as the only reducing agent and stabilizer under mild aqueous conditions. The AgNPs were tightly adhered to the CNF surface, and the resulting stable CNF–AgNP suspension can be used for rapid and selective detection of l-cysteine (Cys). The efficacy of the process relies upon the surface plasmon resonance properties of AgNPs and the aggregation effect of AgNPs in the presence of Cys. Under optimal ionic strength provided by NaCl, Cys interacted with AgNPs, leading to a change in yellow color of the CNF–AgNP to purple. The colloidal suspension showed high sensitivity (limit of detection of 49 nM) and rapid (5 min) and selective detection of Cys among 20 amino acids that make up human proteins, hence demonstrating great potential for analyzing practical samples.

To compare photodegradation processes in single- and binary-contaminant systems, a representative antibiotic (tetracycline) and insecticide (imidacloprid) were employed as two contaminants of emerging concern. Ag/AgBr modified BiOBr was synthesized hydrothermally in an ionic-liquid/water medium and characterized via various techniques to support mechanistic studies. As-prepared flower-shaped Ag/AgBr/BiOBr exhibits superior photocatalytic activity to Ag/AgBr and BiOBr. Parallel experiments were conducted in single-contaminant systems to optimize the solution chemistry for comparison studies; these suggested that the photodegradation rate (DR) is highest at 1.0 g L−1 at catalyst dosages ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 g L−1, while raising the initial concentration reduces the DR. Additionally, electrostatic interactions between the reactants and photocatalyst cause DR fluctuations at different pH values. In the mechanistic studies, the contributions of the dominant active species (˙O2− and h+) were analysed quantitatively through quenching tests with scavengers. Furthermore, electrostatic interactions between the reactants and the active species result in non-equilibrated contributions from ˙O2− and h+ in single-contaminant systems. Comparison studies distinctly demonstrated a synergistic effect in binary-contaminant systems, which is caused by the mutually complementary utilization of h+ and ˙O2− during the photodegradation of tetracycline and imidacloprid.

The para arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) used as feed additive in the poultry and swine industries tends to transform into more toxic inorganic arsenic (As(V) and As(III)), leading to a greater risk to human health and environmental system. In this study, simultaneous adsorption and oxidation of p -ASA was achieved by a synthesized highly efficient nanostructured Fe-Ti-Mn composite oxide (FTMO), with a high specific surface area of 424.7 m 2 /g. The maximum adsorption capacity for p -ASA could be as high as 45.6 mg/g, meanwhile the combined oxidation/photo-oxidation processes led to the formation of intermediate containing hydrazine group, however, without release of toxic inorganic As(III) and As(V). The p -ASA adsorption by FTMO was verified as the chemisorption process with the formation of inner-sphere complexes at the solid/water interface, which was prominently influenced by solution pH, coexisting ions and humic acid, however relatively insensitive to ionic strength. The systematic characterization by FTIR, XPS, EPR and XANES revealed that Fe phase of FTMO played the dominant role for p -ASA adsorption, while Mn and Ti phases were responsible for the oxidation and photo-oxidation of p -ASA, respectively.

Recently, green and sustainable photochromic devices have attracted considerable attention in the research community. In this work, we report a novel ultraviolet (UV)-responsive nanocellulose film using ammonium molybdate as the photochromic dye. Meanwhile, trirthylene glycol (TEG) was incorporated to accelerate the light-responsive process. Therefore, the photochromic nanocellulose film exhibits a fast response photochromic ability and inherits the high transparency of the nanocellulose film. Moreover, the reversible photochromic of the film can be easily repeated. Importantly, the photochromic and fading processes can be precisely controlled and predicted by adjusting the outside temperature and the film composition. Interestingly, the photochromic cellulose films also have great UV blocking and biodegradability. In summary, this green nanocellulose based photochromic film has a giant potential for flexible light-memory devices.

Chitosan has attracted much attention for use in antimicrobial food packaging because of its unique antibacterial properties and excellent film-forming ability. However, its poor barrier properties to UV light and high water-solubility limit its application. In this study, modified cellulose nanofiber was incorporated into chitosan films to improve their UV blocking, physical, and antibacterial properties. Modified cellulose nanofiber was obtained by grafting curcumin to 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that cellulose was successfully modified. Bio-nanocomposite films composed of chitosan (67–100 wt %) and curcumin grafted TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (CGTOCNF, 0–33 wt %) were prepared using the casting method. Scanning electron microscopy images and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the addition of CGTOCNF noticeably affected the morphology of the composite films, with the crystallinity significantly increasing from 21.93% to 87.15%. Moreover, CGTOCNF incorporation improved the oxidation resistance and UV blocking properties of the composite films compared to pure chitosan films. It is also worth mentioning that all of the composite films have excellent antibacterial activity with CGTOCNF partially replacing chitosan. Furthermore, the water solubility of films decreased with the incorporation of CGTOCNF. However, this study demonstrated that incorporation of CGTOCNF at concentrations greater than 10% resulted in a slight decrease in the water vapor barrier properties and mechanical strength of chitosan films. The findings in this work indicate that the addition of 10% CGTOCNF to chitosan films enhances their physical and antibacterial properties, thus increasing their potential for use in food packaging.
