Vertically aligned reduced graphene oxide/Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid hydrogel for highly efficient solar steam generation

Li Wei,Li Xiaofeng,Chang Wei,Wu Jing,Liu Pengfei,Wang Jianjun,Yao Xi,Yu Zhong-Zhen

Effective utilization of abundant solar energy for desalination of seawater and purification of wastewater is one of sustainable techniques for production of clean water, helping relieve global water resource shortage. Herein, we fabricate a vertically aligned reduced graphene oxide/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (A-RGO/MX) hybrid hydrogel with aligned channels as an independent solar steam generation device for highly efficient solar steam generation. The vertically aligned channels, generated by a liquid nitrogen-assisted directional-freezing process, not only rapidly transport water upward to the evaporation surface for efficient solar steam generation, but also facilitate multiple reflections of solar light inside the channels for efficient solar light absorption. The deliberate slight reduction endows the RGO with plenty of polar groups, decreasing the water vaporization enthalpy effectively and hence accelerating water evaporation efficiently. The MXene sheets, infiltrated inside the A-RGO hydrogel on the basis of Marangoni effect, enhance light absorption capacity and photothermal conversion performance. As a result, the A-RGO/MX hybrid hydrogel achieves a water evaporation rate of 2.09 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with a high conversion efficiency of 93.5% under 1-sun irradiation. Additionally, this photothermal conversion hydrogel rapidly desalinates seawater and purifies wastewater to generate clean water with outstanding ion rejection rates of above 99% for most ions.

A near-infrared light-mediated antimicrobial based on Ag/Ti3C2Tx for effective synergetic antibacterial applications

Xiaoquan Zhu,Yingnan Zhu,Ke Jia,Bahreselam Sielu Abraha,Yang Li,Wenchao Peng,Fengbao Zhang,Xiaobin Fan,Lei Zhang

Designing antimicrobials with high efficiency and long-term antibacterial activity is an imperative issue. We found that the antimicrobial effect of Ti3C2Tx and Ag/Ti3C2Tx could be significantly strengthened upon near-infrared light exposure. The synergistic antibacterial mode of the photothermal bactericidal effect and intrinsic bacterial activity have been revealed, which confirms that the Ti3C2Tx MXene is an excellent near-infrared light-mediated nanoplatform for antibacterial applications. To further test the antibacterial effect in practical applications, Ag/Ti3C2Tx embedded hydrogels were used as wound dressings in a wound model experiment. They exhibit outstanding bacterial inhibition and wound healing performance with near-infrared light exposure. This work inspires us to explore the MXene-based photothermal platform in terms of antibacterial application.

A general way to transform Ti3C2Tx MXene into solvent-free fluids for filler phase applications

Dechao Wang,Yangyang Xin,Yudeng Wang,Xiaoqian Li,Hu Wu,Weirui Zhang,Dongdong Yao,Hongni Wang,Yaping Zheng,Zhongjie He,Zhiyuan Yang,Xingfeng Lei

The emerging two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) have been gradually coming into the limelight due to excellent mechanical properties, electrical conductivity performance and versatile surface chemistry. However, the oxidation instability and poor processability of MXenes impede further scalable applications. Toward this end, we have for the first time proposed a general and facile strategy to transform Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene into a novel class of homogenous, stable solvent-free liquids (MX-fluid) with core-corona-canopy structure via covalent linkage surface engineering strategy. The as-prepared MX-liquid exhibited rather stable antioxidant ability after setting for 540 days. Moreover, the MX-fluid presented macroscopic flow behaviors at room temperature, remarkably improving processability and showing extensive potential in addressing the daunting dispersion issue when blending the Ti 3 C 2 T x with other polymer matrixes. Furthermore, the generality of constructing solvent-free MXene fluids using covalent corona-canopy linkage strategy was verified. As two proof-of-concept demonstrations, the MX-fluid was first utilized as a filler phase of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The MX-fluid exhibited greatly enhanced CO 2 uptake compared with that of N 2 , which was also confirmed by molecular simulation. Next, the MX-fluid was incorporated into Pebax-1657 matrix, and improved CO 2 selective separation (CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 69.2) was obtained, where the CO 2 permeability increased by 179.9% compared with pristine Pebax-1657 membrane. Second, the MX-fluid was demonstrated a good reinforcement phase of epoxy-based composites. Remarkably, the rich library of MXenes family and oligomer species provides more convenience for the further optimization of structures of solvent-free MXene liquids for task-specific applications, thus paving new ways to advance the development of novel solvent-free MXene liquids into scale-up and practical applications

Fengqi Qi,Lei Wang,Yali Zhang,Zhonglei Ma,Hua Qiu,Junwei Gu

Lightweight and robust electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are highly desirable in high-end precision electronic components and 5G communication system . Herein, the starch based porous carbon foam (PCF) is prepared by yeast fermentation, steam foaming and carbonization approach with flour as raw material. The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/PCF (MPCF) composites are then fabricated via vacuum assisted impregnation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene followed by freeze drying. The obtained PCF presents excellent compression strength and superior electrical properties. The compression strength and electrical conductivity ( σ ) of the PCF carbonized at 1400 °C are 4.9 MPa and 21.8 S/cm, respectively. The MPCF composites with 8.5 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene exhibits superior EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and specific shielding effectiveness (SSE, EMI SE/ ρ ) of 75 dB and 216.9 dB cm 3 /g, respectively. Meanwhile, the MPCF composites possess excellent flame retardancy and outstanding heat insulation performances, and can be applied in the extreme environments. The resultant lightweight, robust and multifunctional MPCF composites with simple fabrication processes show broad application prospects for EMI shielding systems in aerospace, military engineering, electrical and electronics fields.

High-performance flexible and free-standing N-doped Ti3C2Tx/ MoOx films as electrodes for supercapacitors

Xiaoqing Bin,Yapeng Tian,Yangyang Luo,Minhao Sheng,Yijia Luo,Maomao Ju,Wenxiu Que

In order to obtain high-performance flexible electrodes for supercapacitors, the nitrogen-doped delaminated-Ti 3 C 2 T x (N-d-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) decorated with MoO x nanoparticles (N-d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /MoO x ) films are prepared by a one-step solvothermal method. The N-d-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets with high conductivity can facilitate electron transfer during the charge and discharge process, and the MoO x nanoparticles can contribute to high pseudocapacitance. Hence, their combination is expected to not only inhibit N-d-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets from re-stacking, but also enhance the specific capacity of the whole electrode. Here, benefiting from the synergistic effect of the two components, the obtained optimal flexible and free-standing N-d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /MoO x film electrode delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 341.0 C g −1 (920.6 C cm −3 , 487.1 F g −1 , 1315.2 F cm −3 ) at the scan rate of 2 mV s −1 , and shows superior capacity retention of 99.2% after 11000 cycles at the current density of 5 A g −1 . Moreover, the flexible and free-standing N-d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /MoO x film electrode is also beneficial to promote the development of flexible supercapacitors.

Free-electrodeposited anodic stripping voltammetry sensing of Cu(II) based on Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon black

Xia Yixuan,Ma Yuzhi,Wu Yuntao,Yi Yinhui,Lin Huiyu,Zhu Gangbing

A proof-of-principle concept for free-electrodeposited anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) sensing of Cu 2+ is proposed by using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/carbon black (Ti 3 C 2 T x @CB) nanohybrids as electrode materials. Owing to the high adsorption and reduction capability of Ti 3 C 2 T x towards Cu 2+ , Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene enables Cu 2+ to be immobilized and self-reduced directly to form Cu 0 on the Ti 3 C 2 T x @CB electrode surface. As a result an oxidation peak current appears from the re-oxidation of Cu 0 via differential pulse voltammetry. Carbon black (CB) was introduced to prevent Ti 3 C 2 T x Mxene aggregation and improve the related electron transfer as well as enhance their surface area. After optimizing various conditions, a considerable low limit of detection (4.6 nM) and a wide linear range (0.01–15.0 μM) for Cu 2+ were achieved at the working potential from − 0.3 V to 0.0 V (vs SCE). Relative standard deviation (RSD) of eight individual Ti 3 C 2 T x @CB electrodes is 3.72%, and the recoveries from tap water sample and lake water sample were in the ranges of 97.0–108% and 104–107%, respectively. Surface-Modified Metallic Ti3C2Tx MXene as Electron Transport Layer for Planar Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells

Lin Yang,Chunxiang Dall'Agnese,Yohan Dall'Agnese,Gang Chen,Yu Gao,Yoshitaka Sanehira,Ajay Kumar Jena,Xiao-Feng Wang,Yury Gogotsi,Tsutomu Miyasaka

MXenes are a large and rapidly expanding family of 2D materials that, owing to their unique optoelectronic properties and tunable surface termination, find a wide range of applications including energy storage and energy conversion. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets are applied as a novel type of electron transport layer (ETL) in low-temperature processed planar-structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Interestingly, simple UV-ozone treatment of the metallic Ti 3 C 2 T x that increases the surface Ti  O bonds without any change in its bulk properties such as high electron mobility improves its suitability as an ETL. Improved electron transfer and suppressed recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface results in augmentation of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 5.00% in the case of Ti 3 C 2 T x without UV-ozone treatment to the champion PCE of 17.17%, achieved using the Ti 3 C 2 T x film after 30 min of UV-ozone treatment. As the first report on the use of pure MXene layer as an ETL in PSCs, this work shows the great potential of MXenes to be used in PSCs and displays their promise for applications in photovoltaic technology in general.

Synthesis and photocatalytic H2-production activity of plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx MXene modified graphitic carbon nitride

Fang Xu,Dainan Zhang,Yulong Liao,Gang Wang,Xiaolei Shi,Huaiwu Zhang,Quanjun Xiang

Plasma processing technology, as a promising method to enhance photocatalytic activity of catalyst, is gradually attracting extensive interest from researchers. However, the main mechanism of plasma-treated photocatalyst on hydrogen production is not clear. In this work, 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is selected as a co-catalyst of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), which carries out a plasma treatment (500°C) under N 2 /H 2 atmosphere. Due to plasma treatment, there is a higher proportion Ti–O functional groups on surface of layered Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, especially for Ti 4+ . The obtained g-C 3 N 4 /p-Ti 3 C 2 T x photocatalyst with sandwich-like structure shows an enhanced photocatalytic activity. The rate of hydrogen generation of CN/pTC3.0 sample without Pt co-catalyst is 25.4 and 2.4 times that of pure g-C 3 N 4 and CN/TC3.0 samples, respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity is attributed to presence of Ti 4+ due to plasma treatment, which can capture photo-induced electron from g-C 3 N 4 and improve the separation of electrons and holes after visible light irradiation. The cyclic hydrogen production of the photocatalyst demonstrates good photocatalytic stability. In addition, this method of plasma treatment under N 2 /H 2 atmosphere is feasible to develop a high-performance co-catalyst, which can be extended to other photocatalysts with two-dimensional structure for photocatalytic water-splitting applications.

A MXene of type Ti3C2Tx functionalized with copper nanoclusters for the fluorometric determination of glutathione

Shi Yu-e,Han Fei,Xie Luoyuan,Zhang Chuanchuan,Li Tianzi,Wang Henggang,Lai Wing-Fu,Luo Shaojuan,Wei Wei,Wang Zhenguang,Huang Yang

Luminescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) are chosen to functionalize Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene flakes to form a new kind of nanohybrid. It was applied to the determination of glutathione (GSH) via photoluminescence (PL). The Cu NCs and MXene flakes are in close contact, and the blue PL of the Cu NCs (with excitation/emission peaks at 380/425 nm) is quenched. The addition of GSH triggers the separation of the nanohybrid. This results in the recovery of PL. GSH also promotes the PL of Cu NCs via host-guest interactions. Thus, target recognition, corresponding signal output and further magnification are accomplished in a single step. Under optimum conditions, the nanohybrid can detect GSH in the 5.0 to 100 μM concentration range and with a 3.0 μM detection limit. The assay is very specific and shows high selectivity towards metal ions, small biomolecules, amino acids, and thiol containing molecules. Luminescent copper nanoclusters are used to functionalize Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene flakes, forming a nanohybrid, which is applied to detect glutathione. Target recognition, signal output and magnification are accomplished in a single step, resulting in high selectivity.

Flammability, thermal stability and mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites reinforced with delaminated Ti3C2Tx (MXene)

Ying Pan,Li Fu,Qingwei Zhou,Zhenan Wen,Cheng-Te Lin,Jinhong Yu,Weiming Wang,Hongting Zhao

Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) was synthesized and mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to fabricate PVA/MXene nanocomposites. The results confirmed that delaminated MXene was successfully synthesized. The nanocomposites were obtained via casting/evaporation method. The thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). For the PVA composites with content of 2 wt% MXene (PVA-MXene2), the thermal decomposition was retarded by approximately 20°C when the temperature was lower than 350°C compared with that of pure PVA. Moreover, the evolved gas products of the PVA/MXene composite were lower than those of pure PVA. For the first time, the flame retardancy of PVA/MXene nanocomposite was investigated using a microscale combustion calorimeter. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release of the PVA composite were reduced by 25.7% and 25.5%, respectively, with 1 wt% of MXene. The temperatures at PHRR of PVA/MXene composites were improved with the addition of MXene. Moreover, the addition of MXene resulted in PVA composites with a higher tensile strength and elongation at break than those of a pure PVA film. The improvements in the flame retardancy, thermal and mechanical properties of PVA/MXene composites should enable a wide range of potential applications of MXenes in polymer matrices.

Bioinspired functionalization of MXenes (Ti3C2TX) with amino acids for efficient removal of heavy metal ions

Defu Gan,Qiang Huang,Jibo Dou,Hongye Huang,Junyu Chen,Meiying Liu,Yuanqing Wen,Zhenyu Yang,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

MXenes are a novel type of two-dimensional (2D) materials that could be obtained from etching of Al atoms in layered hexagonal ternary carbide. These 2D materials display many outstanding physicochemical properties and are potentially utilized for various applications. Although previous reports demonstrated that MXenes and MXenes-based composites could be potentially utilized for environmental applications, the adsorption performance is limited and development of facile methods for synthesis MXenes-based composites with higher adsorption capability is of great importance. In this work, we reported for the first time that MXenes-based polymeric composites (Ti 3 C 2 T X -PDOPA) could be simply fabricated via mixing of MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T X ) and levodopa (DOPA) under rather mild reaction conditions. In this reaction system, DOPA could adhere on the surface of MXenes through self-polymerization and many carboxyl groups could thus introduce during the polymerization procedure to form poly (DOPA). The resultant Ti 3 C 2 T X -PDOPA composites were utilized as adsorbents and showed higher adsorption capacity in removal heavy metal ions as compared with that of raw Ti 3 C 2 T X . More importantly, Ti 3 C 2 T X -PDOPA composites could be further functionalized with other functional materials through subsequent reaction because many reactive functional groups were introduced on MXenes and various MXenes-based composites could be fabricated.

Covalent Assembly of carboxyl functionalized Ti3C2Tx with Amino-Fe3O4 for excellent electromagnetic wave absorbing property

Jianye Shi,Jin Chen,XinLe Wang,Yuzhao Ma,Xiaofeng Yang,Meidan Que,Hudie Yuan,Yunqin Gao,Yanjun Li

ABSTRACT The construction of a three-dimensional heterojunction interface and chemical modification can significantly enhance the electromagnetic wave absorption capability of composites. In this study, we successfully synthesized a covalently bonded carboxyl functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x (CFTC) complexed with Amino-Fe 3 O 4 (CFTC-Fe 3 O 4 ) through an amidation reaction followed by a post-annealing process, resulting in the homogeneous dispersion of NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 between CFTC layers. The innovative approach establishes a multi-layer heterojunction interface that effectively encapsulates magnetic nanoparticles with CFTC, thereby enhancing both interface polarization, defect polarization and conduction loss. The magnetoelectric synergy between CFTC and NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 improves impedance matching and endows the composites with exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities. Notably, the absorbers demonstrate an impressive minimum reflection loss of -50.95 dB at a thickness of 1.56 mm when the mass ratio of CFTC to NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 is 1:1 (designated as CTNF-2), accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.76 GHz (12.32-17.08 GHz). This study presents a novel approach to developing highly efficient MXene-based absorbing materials through chemical modifications.
