Efficient reduction and adsorption of U(VI) by TiN-modified zero-valent nickel: mechanistic insights and DFT calculations

Linkai He,Xingqiang Wu,Yixin Pan,Faquan Wu

The mining of uranium ore and the disposal of nuclear power plant waste may lead to uranium contamination. Particularly in aquatic environments, uranium exhibits high solubility and mobility, thereby causing severe radioactive pollution to groundwater, soil, and ecosystems. Such contamination poses significant challenges for remediation efforts. In this study, we synthesized a composite material (Ni-TiN) composed of nano-titanium nitride (TiN) and zero-valent nickel using an in-situ reduction method, achieving efficient uranium adsorption and reduction. The experimental results demonstrated that under the conditions of 303 K and pH = 5, the maximum uranium adsorption capacity reached 418.97 mg/g, accompanied by a significant enhancement in the removal rate. The experimental data perfectly fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this indicates that the removal process of U(VI) by the composite material involves a combination of chemical reduction and complexation, further elucidating its adsorption mechanism. In the presence of multiple ions, only a few ions significantly inhibited U(VI) removal. These findings suggest that Ni-TiN exhibits exceptional environmental adaptability and selective adsorption capacity, highlighting its significant potential in the field of environmental remediation.

Enhancing the long-term marine atmospheric corrosion performance of structural steel via an advanced Tin thermal diffusion process

Bingqin Wang,Yadi Zhao,Ruichao Yan,Liangan Liu,Xuequn Cheng,Luntao Wang,Zhong Li,Chao Liu,Dawei Zhang,Xiaogang Li

In this study, 45 steel was taken as the research object, and a tin-iron alloy layer was prepared on its surface via a thermal diffusion tinning process. Combined with a series of characterization methods, the microstructure and element distribution of the thermal diffusion layer were systematically analyzed. Additionally, through cyclic immersion tests, electrochemical measurements, and outdoor exposure tests in marine atmosphere, the effects of thermal diffusion temperature and tin content in the diffusion agent on the structure and corrosion resistance of the thermal diffusion layer were systematically investigated. The results show that thermal diffusion tinning can form an alloy layer dominated by FeSn2 on the surface of 45 steel. Moreover, the higher the thermal diffusion temperature and the greater the tin content in the diffusion agent, the larger the thickness (up to 15 μm) and the better the compactness of the alloy layer. The corrosion resistance of the tinned steel is significantly better than that of 45 steel, and it is further improved with the increase of thermal diffusion temperature, tin content, and extension of thermal diffusion time. Among them, the tinned steel prepared under the thermal diffusion process of 80%-280°C-4h exhibits a corrosion current density of 4.027 μA · cm -2 , which is only 1/400 of that of 45 steel (12.095 μA · cm -2 ), and demonstrates the latest corrosion initiation and slowest development rate in marine atmospheric exposure. The key factors contributing to the improved corrosion resistance are the stable structure of FeSn 2 intermetallic compounds in the thermal diffusion layer, the physical barrier effect of the dense alloy layer, and the protective rust layer formed during the corrosion process.

Macrophage-amplified toxicity of indium tin oxide nanoparticles to bronchial epithelial cells involving ROS-associated NF-κB signaling

Yu Zhang,Yu-Qi Hong,Yi Liu,Ye Yuan,Zi-Xuan Lu,Xiang Zhang,Ting-Ting Zhu

Indium tin oxide nanoparticles (ITO NPs) are widely used in optoelectronic industries, and increasing occupational exposure has raised concern about their pulmonary toxicity. Although ITO exposure has been associated with severe lung diseases, the mechanisms underlying epithelial injury remain unclear. Here, a simplified macrophage–epithelial cell model using RAW264.7 macrophages and BEAS-2B epithelial cells was established to investigate how macrophages modulate ITO NP-induced epithelial toxicity. Direct exposure to ITO NPs caused limited toxicity in BEAS-2B cells, whereas conditioned medium from ITO NP-exposed RAW264.7 cells was associated with reduced epithelial viability, increased LDH release, and EMT-like changes. Dissolved indium species alone did not fully account for the observed effects, whereas macrophage-derived oxidative stress and associated inflammatory responses appeared to contribute more substantially to the epithelial responses. Transcriptomic and biochemical analyses showed that ITO NPs induced oxidative stress and activated NF-κB signaling in macrophages. Inhibition of ROS or NF-κB attenuated macrophage-derived cytotoxicity and reduced EMT-like changes in epithelial cells. These findings support a role for macrophages as important regulators of ITO NP-induced epithelial injury and provide additional mechanistic insight into ITO-related pulmonary toxicity.

Dual carbon layer hybridized mesoporous tin hollow spheres for fast-rechargeable and highly-stable lithium-ion battery anodes

Weili An,Jijiang Fu,Shixiong Mei,Lu Xia,Xingxing Li,Huazhi Gu,Xuming Zhang,Biao Gao,Paul K. Chu,Kaifu Huo

Although tin-based nanocomposites are potential fast-charging anode materials for lithium-ion batteries to replace graphite-based materials due to their high theoretical capacity, they have some practical limitations such as relatively poor cycle stability which is caused by the large volume change and aggregation of Sn. Herein, we report a conjoined Sn/C hollow spherical nanocomposite (MSHSs@C/C) prepared by double DA polymerization and annealing. MSHSs@C/C with ultrasmall Sn nanoparticles (5–8 nm) embedded in its conductive carbon matrix can achieve a large Sn mass loading of 75% and overcome the aggregation and volumetric expansion of Sn during cycling. The MSHSs@C/C anode delivers an excellent performance including a high reversible capacity of 831 mA h g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g−1, a capacity retention of 42.5% when the density is increased 100 times from 0.1 to 10 A g−1, a capacity of 325 mA h g−1 at a large current density of 10.0 A g−1 (10C, 1C = 1.0 A g−1) after 4000 cycles, and superior cycling stability. Fast charging can be accomplished in 2.5 min and the MSHSs@C/C anode overcomes many of the intrinsic problems plaguing Sn-based anode materials in Li-ion batteries.

Achieving High Open-Circuit Voltage on Planar Perovskite Solar Cells via Chlorine-Doped Tin Oxide Electron Transport Layers

Jiwei Liang,Zhiliang Chen,Guang Yang,Haibing Wang,Feihong Ye,Chen Tao,Guojia Fang

The open-circuit voltage deficit is one of the main limiting factors for the further performance improvement in planar structured perovskite solar cells. In this work, we elaborately develop chlorine binding on the surface of tin oxide electron transport layer for a high open-circuit voltage device (1.195 V). The chlorine passivation on SnO2 not only effectively mitigates the interfacial charge recombination between SnO2 and perovskite but also enhances the binding of chlorine with lead at the SnO2/perovskite interface. The chlorine-passivated SnO2 electron transport layer exhibits a better energy alignment with the perovskite layer and an improved electron mobility, which will promote efficient electron transfer at the interface. In addition, the elevated Fermi level of SnO2 electron transport layer increases carrier extraction and suppresses interfacial recombination, which is responsible for the open-circuit voltage enhancement. Planar perovskite solar cells with chlorine-passivated SnO2 exhibit a higher open-circuit voltage of 1.195 V than that of reference ones (1.135 V) for a lower band gap of 1.58 eV perovskite absorbers, which achieve a power conversion efficiency of 20% with negligible hysteresis.

Superhydrophobic and photothermal SiC/TiN durable composite coatings for passive anti-icing/active de-icing and de-frosting

Hua He,Wei Huang,Zhiguang Guo

Facing the problems of fossil energy shortage and solid surface icing, the use of solar energy to remove surface ice accumulation is a promising solution. Here, we propose a superhydrophobic coating with a photothermal effect for anti-icing and de-icing and defrosting performance. We designed the coating using a simple secondary spray method. That is, a bonding substrate (epoxy resin) is first constructed on the glass substrate , then a protective layer (polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)) mixed with SiC/TiN composite particles is sprayed onto the epoxy resin surface, and finally dried to obtain a photothermal superhydrophobic coating. In this design, the coating shows (I) excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle = 155°, sliding angle = 4°), (II) excellent photothermal effect (the surface temperature of obtain coating rapidly rose to 111.8 °C under 1 sun), and (III) good chemical and mechanical stability. As a result, the coating shows excellent anti-icing, de-icing, and defrosting properties. For example, the coating can significantly extend the icing time. In the face of surface frozen water droplets, frost layers, and large areas of ice cover, the coating can rapidly photothermally remove surface ice layers under 40 mW cm −2 light irradiation. As a result, the coating is simple to prepare and has excellent superhydrophobic, photothermal anti-icing/de-icing, and defrosting properties. The study is of great significance for multifunctional applications.

Tin–chromium bimetallic metal–organic framework MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) as a catalyst for glucose conversion into HMF

Jiawen Hao,Wei Mao,Guirong Ye,Yi Xia,Cui Wei,Ling Zeng,Jinghong Zhou

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is considered a promising platform chemical, from which numerous chemicals can be produced. Hence, developing an efficient catalytic system to convert glucose into HMF has drawn considerable attention. In this study, a series of Lewis acidic Sn–Cr bimetallic metal–organic frameworks, MIL-101(Cr, Sn), with different Sn ion loading were synthesized hydrothermally using acetic acid as the mineralizer and water as the solvent. The resulting MIL-101(Cr, Sn) was systematically analyzed as a catalyst for the conversion of sugar to HMF. Moreover, the effects exerted by various reaction parameters on HMF yield and selectivity were investigated. With glucose as the substrate and 0.5-wt% H 2 SO 4 as a catalyst, an 85.75% glucose conversion with 22.64% HMF yield and 26.41% selectivity was achieved. Meanwhile, these parameters were improved via addition of MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1. That is, glucose conversion, HMF yield, and selectivity were increased to 86.36%, 60.75%, and 70.35%, respectively, when using MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1 and H 2 SO 4 as the catalyst under the same reaction conditions. The MIL-101(Cr, Sn) structure enabled high stability of the catalyst in aqueous solutions with different pH values, while improving its thermal stability. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused several times despite a slight reduction in its catalytic activity . The current results illustrate that MIL-101(Cr, Sn) is an excellent acid and sustainable catalyst for the production of HMF from fructose, glucose, and starch .

Pulmonary and Systemic Toxicity in a Rat Model of Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis Induced by Indium-Tin Oxide Nanoparticles

Nan Liu,Yi Guan,Chunling Zhou,Yongheng Wang,Zhanfei Ma,Sanqiao Yao

Purpose The main objective of this study was to clarify the biodistribution and in vivo toxicological effects of indium-tin oxide nanoparticles (Nano-ITO) in male rats. Methods Dose-response (three divided doses) and time-course studies (six exposure durations) were performed to examine Nano‑ITO-induced pulmonary and systemic toxicity. At the end of the experiment, hematology and serum biochemical parameters were determined, and cytokines levels and oxidative stress were analyzed in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In addition, indium biodistribution following Nano‑ITO exposure was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer to measure indium concentration in the lung, spleen, brain, liver, kidney, and testis. Rat lung tissues were also harvested for staining with hematoxylin and eosin, periodic acid Schiff stain, Masson’s trichrome, and Sirius red. Results Relative lung weights were significantly increased in all Nano-ITO-exposed groups. All organs exhibited a statistically significant difference in indium levels. Rat exposure to Nano‑ITO resulted in a dose-response increase in acute systemic inflammation and injury. BALF analysis revealed significantly elevated levels of lung oxidative stress, pulmonary injury, and inflammatory markers across most groups. Serum biochemistry results showed that Nano-ITO could affect the liver and renal functions of rats when exposed for 3 days. Compared with the control group, significant inflammatory responses or pathological changes were observed in the liver, kidney, and testis of rats at different sampling times and three doses examined. Histopathologically, foci of slight-to-severe pulmonary inflammatory response along with acute inflammatory, pulmonary fibrosis and alveolar proteinosis were detected, and the severity of these lesions worsened in a dose- and time-dependent manner.Discussion These findings provide novel evidence that enhanced progressive massive pulmonary fibrosis, diffuse interstitial fibrosis, and collagen accumulation play a role in the development of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis following Nano-ITO exposure.

Halogen regulation triggers structural transformation from centrosymmetric to noncentrosymmetric switches in tin phosphate halides Sn2PO4X (X = F, Cl)

Ting Zheng,Qiang Wang,JinXuan Ren,Liling Cao,Ling Huang,Daojiang Gao,Jian Bi,Guohong Zou

Generally, phosphates are employed to design ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals. However, phosphates always suffer from too small birefringence to effectively achieve phase matching. Herein, the Sn2+ cation with a stereochemically active lone pair was introduced into a phosphate as a birefringence-active unit, and two tin phosphate halides Sn2PO4X (X = F, Cl) were successfully synthesized. Interestingly, the different coordination environments of the Sn-polyhedron caused by the partial substitution of halide ions (F−/Cl−) with different ionic radii for the oxygen ligands lead to structural transformation from centrosymmetric (CS) Sn2PO4F to noncentrosymmetric (NCS) Sn2PO4Cl. Thus, Sn2PO4X (X = F, Cl) were characterized by enlarged birefringence, and Sn2PO4Cl is type I phase-matchable with a moderate SHG response, and is a potential ultraviolet nonlinear optical material. Furthermore, both phosphates show wide band gaps. Theoretical analysis confirmed that their excellent optical properties result from the synergistic effect of the [SnOX] (X = F, Cl) polyhedra with stereochemically active lone pairs and the [PO4]3− tetrahedron.

TiN ceramic membrane supported nitrogen-incorporating NiCo2 nanowires as bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting in alkaline solution

Chuntian Tan,Feihong Wang,Kai Lv,Yangyang Shi,Binbin Dong,Luyuan Hao,Liangjun Yin,Xin Xu,Yuxi Xian,Simeon Agathopoulos

Developing a highly efficient, cost-effective, and stable bifunctional electrode for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is still a major challenge. This work reports on a novel method for fabricating TiN ceramic membrane supported nitrogen-incorporating NiCo 2 nanowires (NiCo 2 -N/TiN) as a bifunctional electrode. Owing to its unique structure, the ample reaction sites available, and the enhanced mass/charge transport ability, the NiCo 2 -N/TiN electrode exhibits efficient catalytic performance both in HER and OER, with overpotentials of 131 mV at 20 mA·cm −2 for HER and 330 mV at 20 mA·cm −2 for OER, together with excellent stability in alkaline solution. The NiCo 2 -N/TiN electrode only requires a cell voltage of 1.71 V to drive the current density of 20 mA·cm −2 for overall water splitting, which exhibits excellent stability for more than 100000 s. Accordingly, the produced ceramic membrane electrode has a great potential for application in industrial hydrogen production.

Liang Liu,Baocang Liu,Xuan Xu,Peng Jing,Jun Zhang

The electrochemical oxidation of glycerol is considered as a promising route to generate high value-added products. Rationally tuning the electronic structure of Pt catalysts by supporter and modifier is desirable for promoting the activity and stability of glycerol electrooxidation reaction (GEOR). In this work, we report Pt–Bi hybrid nanoparticles anchored hollow titanium nitride nanowires grew on carbon cloth (Pt 1-x -Bi x /TiN HNWs/CC (0≤ x ≤ 1)) as a self-supported monolithic electrode for efficient GEOR. Contributed by 3D porous nanotube structure, high corrosion resistance and conductivity of TiN, and strong electronic coupling effect of Pt, Bi, and TiN, the optimized Pt 0.95 -Bi 0.05 /TiN HNWs/CC electrode exhibits good catalytic activity and stability for GEOR. It shows a high peak current density of 88.4 mA cm −2 or 306.7 mA mg Pt −1 in 0.05 M glycerol +1.0 M KOH solution. After continuous electrolysis for 8 h in 0.05 M glycerol +1.0 M KOH solution at a constant potential of 0.85 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), a high glycerol conversion of 87.0%, a moderate selectivity of 36.6% for glyceric acid , and a good stability were achieved, which is superior to other compared electrodes and most of the reported Pt–Bi catalysts.

Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose for the Selective Production of Levoglucosenone Using Phosphorus Molybdenum Tin Mixed Metal Oxides

Yang Li,Bin Hu,Hao Fu,Yu-long Wu,Zhen-xi Zhang,Ji Liu,Bing Zhang,Qiang Lu

Cellulose can be selectively converted into levoglucosenone (LGO), a high-value anhydrosugar, through fast pyrolysis with acidic catalysts. Herein, phosphorus molybdenum tin mixed metal oxides (P-Mo/SnO2) were prepared for the selective production of LGO from the in situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose, where the PO43–, P-support, and Mo6+ species in P-Mo/SnO2 played the determining role in promoting depolymerization, dehydration, and deoxygenation reactions. Pyrolysis-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) tests were carried out to explore the influence of catalyst-to-cellulose (CA-to-CL) ratio, phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) loading, and pyrolytic reaction temperature on LGO preparation. The results demonstrated the maximal LGO yield could reach 17.98 wt % via using P-Mo/SnO2 with the PMA loading of 50 wt % at the pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C and the CA-to-CL ratio of 1:1. Moreover, the highest LGO yield could be up to 12.70 wt % in lab-scale CFP tests at 300 °C and the CA-to-CL ratio of 2:1, and the LGO yield could remain above 10 wt % after five runs of catalyst calcination regeneration.
