PAMAM generation-regulated chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose–UiO-66-NH2 aerogels for CO2, formaldehyde, and cigarette-smoke purification

ZhenXiang Xu,Yuan Gao,JingLiang Wang,YunHuan Li,YiPeng Zhao,Xin Meng,Xia Feng,Li Chen,YiPing Zhao

Bio-based porous adsorbents for multicomponent air purification are often constrained by limited active-site density, insufficient control over hierarchical pore architectures, and inadequate mechanical robustness. Herein, chitosan was functionalized with poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of different generations and combined with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and UiO-66-NH 2 to construct nitrogen-enriched composite aerogels. The effects of PAMAM generation and UiO-66-NH 2 loading on the pore architecture, surface chemistry, mechanical response, and pollutant-capture performance of the aerogels were systematically evaluated. The optimized CG 2 MUNA-2 aerogel exhibited a well-connected porous network and sustained a compressive stress of 13.62 MPa at 80% strain. It achieved a CO 2 uptake of 0.64 mmol·g −1 at 273.15 K and a formaldehyde adsorption capacity of 1.57 mmol g −1 , while retaining 92.4% of its initial formaldehyde adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. When incorporated into cigarette filter rods, CG 2 MUNA-2 reduced CO, CO 2 , and total particulate matter by 30.87%, 14.01%, and 62.58%, respectively. Its superior overall performance was associated with a favorable balance among accessible amine functionalities, pore connectivity, and UiO-66-NH 2 dispersion. These results indicate that the coordinated regulation of PAMAM generation and MOF loading offers a rational materials-design strategy for developing biopolymer-based aerogels for multicomponent air-pollutant capture and cigarette-smoke purification. Dual-modulated anthocyanin-based freshness indicators with improved stability using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and UiO-66-NH2

Hao Fang,Limin Cao,Jianxin Sui,Xiudan Wang,Hong Lin,Kaiqiang Wang,Jinjie Li

A dual-modulation strategy improved the stability of anthocyanin-based indicator patches. • Phenolic copigmentation enhanced thermal stability of anthocyanins. • UiO-66-NH 2 provided effective UV protection and additional pigment immobilization. • The anthocyanin-based patch maintained color integrity for more than 6 months. • The anthocyanin-based patch was used to monitor the freshness of shrimp. Anthocyanins are natural pH-sensitive pigments with potential for intelligent food packaging, but their poor stability under environmental stress limits practical use. Herein, a highly stable intelligent indicator patch was developed by combined incorporation of UiO-66-NH 2 , a metal-organic framework, and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. This dual-modulation strategy significantly enhanced anthocyanins stability through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions. The optimized indicator patch maintained color integrity for over 30 days at ambient temperature and more than 6 months at 4 °C in darkness. It exhibited excellent pH responsiveness and high selectivity to spoilage amines (e.g., NH 3 , dimethylamine, trimethylamine) over common volatile interferents. When applied to Litopenaeus vannamei , the patch's color change correlated strongly with total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values ( r  > 0.93), accurately identifying freshness stages. The indicator patch showed high batch-to-batch reproducibility ( RSD  < 5%) and anti-interference capability. This study provides a feasible approach to commercialize anthocyanin-based freshness indicators for intelligent packaging. Systematic regulation of pore microenvironments: Thermodynamics and mass transfer kinetics of functionalized UiO-66 chromatographic stationary phases

Haonan Wu,Jia Jia,Chaoqiong Zhao,Yunli Luo,Yi Pan,Jin Luo

A uniformly functionalized UiO-66 capillary column with a continuous flow process was prepared. • The hydrophobic pore channel microenvironment (−2CH 3 ) significantly reduces the mass transfer resistance of non-polar molecules. • The polar group (−2SH) triggers specific adsorption of noble gases within the confined pores. • The GCMC simulation quantitatively revealed the thermodynamic essence of the functional group control over adsorption heat. • A structure-activity relationship was established, mapping from functional group design to chromatographic performance. To address the challenges posed by the ill-defined regulatory mechanisms of pore microenvironments in metal-organic framework (MOF) chromatographic stationary phases, this study employs continuous flow synthesis to fabricate a series of functionalized UiO-66 wall-coated open-tubular column with precisely controlled thicknesses. This approach aims to decouple physical morphological interference and systematically elucidate intrinsic separation principles. In the thermodynamic dimension, the retention of aromatic compounds is synergistically governed by framework shape selectivity and π–π interactions. Conversely, for permanent gases where size-sieving is restricted, thiol functionalization achieves successful baseline separation through physical confinement and the induction of specific dipole-quadrupole interactions. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations quantitatively confirm a significant elevation in the isosteric heat of adsorption at the molecular scale, which corroborates the macroscopic chromatographic performance. Long-term stability tests (RSD < 0.28 %) further validate the physicochemical robustness endowed by the synergy between Zr-O coordination bonds and covalent modification groups. This work provides a definitive methodological basis for the theoretical customization and engineering-scale fabrication of high-performance MOF stationary phases.

Construction of Sulfhydryl-Amino UiO-66/PVDF Membranes via Morphology Regulation for the Selective Separation of Artesunate

Kunyi Li,Ziyang Wang,Lingna Meng,Minjia Meng

Artesunate (ARU), a key derivative of artemisinin (ART), exhibits excellent water solubility and antimalarial activity due to its incorporation of a succinic acid group. However, the synthesis process of ARU often leaves behind ART with a highly similar structure and properties, making traditional separation methods ineffective for efficient separation. Developing selective separation technologies holds significant importance. Based on previous studies, in work involving the preparation of bidentate MOFs with different ligands, bidentate MOFs containing thiol/amino groups have been found to exhibit outstanding adsorption capacity and selectivity for ARU molecules. Among these, -NH2forms hydrogen bonds with -COOH in ARU, while -SH interacts non-specifically with Aru, significantly enhancing the adsorption effect. This study employed a delayed inversion method to prepare a sulfhydryl-amino UiO-66/PVDF hybrid membrane (UiO-66-SH/NH2/PVDF) by adjusting the composition of the coagulation bath, which was used for efficient separation of ART/ARU. The effects of ethanol ratio in the coagulation bath on membrane structure and performance were systematically investigated. Results showed that increasing the ethanol ratio delays phase transition, promotes MOF material enrichment on membrane pore surfaces, and forms more abundant pore structures. When the ethanol-to-water volume ratio was 1:1, the UiO-66-SH/NH2/PVDF membrane exhibited optimal pore structure and highest water flux. Static permeation experiments demonstrated that the membrane achieved effective separation of ARU and ART for 8 h, maintaining stable selective adsorption performance after five cycles. This study reveals the critical role of morphology regulation in separating structural analogs, providing new materials and theoretical foundations for efficient separation of artemisinin-based compounds.

Rapid and easily scalable solvothermal synthesis of functionalized UiO-66 for selective separation of CO2 and N2

Beining Qi,Shangzhen Zhang,Qingze Shi,Zexuan Gong,Qian Yue,Zhenqi Duan,Tianyi Zhang,Yinglong Wang,Limei Zhong,Fengbin Zheng

A rapid and easily scalable solvothermal method is developed to synthesize UiO-66 with different functional groups. • UiO-66-NH 2 exhibits excellent CO 2 /N 2 separation performance. • UiO-66-NH 2 significantly enhances the adsorption interaction with CO 2 . • This solvothermal method exhibits good scalability and performance reproducibility. UiO-66 is one of the most promising metal-organic framework (MOF) materials for CO 2 adsorption due to its high specific surface area, high stability, and ease of functionalization. However, its synthesis methods often suffer from problems such as long reaction times, uneven mass and heat transfer, and limitations in equipment size. Here, we develop a rapid and easily scalable solvothermal method to prepare UiO-66 with different functional groups, denoted as UiO-66-x (x = H, NH 2 , NO 2 , F, CH 3 ), for the selective separation of CO 2 and N 2 . Adsorption experiments show that UiO-66-NH 2 exhibits excellent adsorption performance for CO 2 , reaching an adsorption capacity of 76.71 cm 3 /g at 273 K and 0.1 MPa, which is superior to some reported solid adsorbents. Dynamic breakthrough experiments show that UiO-66-NH 2 has excellent separation performance for CO 2 and N 2 under practical conditions. More importantly, UiO-66-NH 2 exhibits good reusability after 10 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Theoretical calculations indicate that the introduction of amino groups enhances the adsorption interaction of UiO-66-NH 2 with CO 2 , thereby improving its selective adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the UiO-66-NH 2 prepared in gram-scale experiments exhibits high consistency with the milligram-scale samples in terms of crystal structure and CO 2 adsorption performance, indicating that this method has good scalability and performance reproducibility. Suppressing Polysulfide Shuttle and Boosting Reaction Kinetics via UiO-66-SH-Functionalized Separators for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Min Chen,Yaping Lu,Xinmin Zhang,Yixin Song,Fengtao Shao,Xuetao Gao,Zhichao Liu,Chunmei Xu,Yiting Peng,Yaping Feng,Kai Xi,Yatao Liu

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries represent promising energy storage devices by virtue of their ultrahigh theoretical energy density, yet their practical deployment is severely impeded by the polysulfide shuttle, sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, and progressive degradation of lithium anodes. Herein, we design a thiol-functionalized UiO-66 (UiO-66-SH)-coated polypropylene separator that addresses these challenges simultaneously. The UiO-66-SH combines abundant coordinatively unsaturated Zr sites and  SH groups, enabling both strong chemical anchoring of lithium polysulfides and catalytic acceleration of their conversion to Li 2 S. The modified separator exhibits superior electrolyte wettability, a high Li + transference number (0.76), and enhanced ionic conductivity. Furthermore, it regulates lithium deposition to achieve a dendrite-free anode and mitigates polysulfide-induced corrosion. Consequently, Li–S cells incorporating UiO-66-SH/PP separator deliver an initial discharge capacity of 821.3 mAh g −1 at 1 C, retain 521 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles, and achieve a high-rate capacity of 590.9 mAh g −1 at 5 C. Even under a high sulfur loading of 5.05 mg cm −2 , a reversible capacity of 620.1 mAh g −1 is maintained after 200 cycles. This work offers a rational design of a multifunctional MOF-based separator that integrates polysulfide entrapment, catalytic conversion, and anode protection, paving the way toward high-performance, long-life Li–S batteries.

Defect-engineered Cr-UiO-66 catalysts for enhanced hydroxyacetone production from 1,2-propanediol via promoted H2O2 activation

Jiarui Li,Bolun Mei,Zhouxuan Zang,Yi Yu,Guoji Liu,Li Xu

A series of Cr-UiO-66 catalysts with ligand-vacancy defects was prepared for the oxidative dehydrogenation of biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol to hydroxyacetone. • A volcano-shaped trend between defect level and hydroxyacetone yield was established. • Moderate ligand vacancies balance H 2 O 2 conversion and the selective formation of hydroxyacetone. • •OH radicals were identified as key species for H 2 O 2 -driven ODH of 1,2-propanediol. The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) to the high-value chemical hydroxyacetone (HA) is a meaningful route for upgrading renewable feedstocks into value-added multifunctional chemicals. In this study, Cr-UiO-66 catalysts with tunable content of ligand vacancies were synthesized for the conversion of 1,2-PDO to HA. Notably, a volcano-shaped relationship was observed between defect density and HA yield. The optimized 0.4Cr-UiO-66 catalyst achieved an HA yield approximately 3 times that of pristine UiO-66, reaching 12.9% at 45 °C after 2 h. Moreover, the catalyst sustained its ODH performance over five reaction runs. Regulating the content of ligand vacancies was shown to modulate the acidic properties of Cr-UiO-66 and H 2 O 2 activation to generate •OH radicals. A moderate level of ligand vacancies enabled a balance between H 2 O 2 activation and selective HA formation, resulting in improved performance. This study highlights ligand-vacancy engineering as an effective strategy for regulating H 2 O 2 activation over UiO-66-based catalysts. It provides meaningful insights for tailoring structural defects in UiO-66 for the ODH valorization of biomass derivatives. Phosphatase-like Ce4+@UiO-66-NH2 nanozyme-based dual-mode hydrogel nanosensor for visual detection of paraoxon

Wenjing Li,Mengqing Xu,Zhuoyun Xia,Zheng Wang,Yingying Feng,Hui Li,Chuang Jiang,Yingnan Liu

The highly selective and sensitive detection of paraoxon residues at low environmental concentrations remains challenging. Herein, a novel fluorescent metal-organic framework composite (Ce 4+ @UiO-66-NH 2 ) with excellent phosphatase-like activity was developed to catalyze the hydrolysis of paraoxon into yellow p -nitrophenol ( p -NP), which quenched the composite's blue fluorescence via the inner filter effect. Based on this mechanism, a simple, portable, non-biological colorimetric/fluorescent hydrogel nanosensor (CM-SA spheres) was constructed by incorporating red fluorescent Mn-CDs with aggregation-induced emission as an internal reference. Upon increasing paraoxon concentration, the spheres showed visible color changes from colorless to yellow under daylight and blue to red under UV light. The sensor demonstrated a visual detection sensitivity of 0.05 μg mL −1 and limits of detection of 0.013 μg mL −1 (daylight) and 0.027 μg mL −1 (UV). In real sample analyses of tea and water, the CM-SA spheres exhibited strong anti-interference capability and reliability, offering a practical strategy for paraoxon degradation and detection.

Development of biochar supported bifunctional UiO-66 catalyst and its application for 5-HMF production from cellulose

Tursunjan Aydan,Nuermaimaiti Yimamu,Ding Kaize,Yao Zhengzheng,Guan Qingqing

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly UiO-66, offer advantages in biomass catalytic conversion due to their good thermal stability, tunable porosity and abundant active sites. However, agglomeration limits their catalytic efficiency. To address this, a series of acid-base bifunctional UiO-66-type catalysts supported on biochar (BC) was developed in green solution through a one-pot method. BC prepared by pyrolyzing cotton stalks (CS) under N 2 atmosphere at high temperature and activated before use. The physico-chemical properties of materials were studied by various characterization methods, and their catalytic performance for converting cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in [BMIM]Cl ionic liquid was evaluated. Reaction parameters such as catalyst type, catalyst loading, temperature and time were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, achieving a 5-HMF yield of 46.58 %. The BC-supported catalyst NH 2 -UiO-66-SO 3 H/BC exhibited significantly higher catalytic activity than its unsupported counterpart and increased the 5-HMF yield by 23.78 %. This performance improvement is attributed to the grafted sulfonic/amino groups, which enhance the catalytic performance by improving the dispersion of UiO-66 upon the introduction of BC. This work demonstrates biochar-supported UiO-66 as an effective strategy for enhancing catalytic efficiency in sustainable biomass valorization to platform chemicals.

MOF ligand side group regulation enables UiO-66/PDMS mixed-matrix membranes for ester/alcohol azeotropic separation

Doudou Dong,Weiliang Xu,Yuanhang Jin,Huan Yu,Rui Yao,Guining Chen,Yanan Guo,Haipeng Zhu,Gongping Liu,Yanshuo Li,Wanqin Jin

Currently, separation of ester/alcohol azeotropes such as methyl methacrylate (MMA)/methanol is a typical energy-intensive process using distillation technology. In principle, pervaporation membrane technology can separate azeotropes with higher energy efficiency, while the membrane performance could not meet the application requirement. We reported a new type of MOF ligand side group regulated UiO-66/PDMS mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to selectively separate MMA from the its methanol azeotrope. The incorporation of UiO-66 fillers improved the MMA/methanol performance of PDMS membrane. The results of molecular simulation and characterizations revealed that compared with the pristine UiO-66 and UiO-66-CH 3 , amino groups of UiO-66-NH 2 showed stronger interaction energy and thus higher affinity towards MMA molecule. Therefore, although the pore size of UiO-66-NH 2 is larger than the molecular kinetic diameters of MMA and methanol, the tunable chemical environment and molecular interaction promoted the selective transport of MMA. The optimal UiO-66-NH 2 /PDMS MMM displayed an outstanding separation performance with a total flux of 2.07 kg m −2  h −1 and a separation factor of 5.7 for 18 wt% MMA/methanol azeotrope at 40 °C. The membrane exhibited an excellent long-term performance during continuous separation process of ∼3400 h, and showed potential in scale-up fabrication and separation of other ester/alcohol azeotropes. The proposed MOF ligand side group regulation offers a promising strategy to develop high-performance membranes for azeotropic separation.

The Facile Construction of Defect-Engineered and Surface-Modified UiO-66 MOFs for Promising Oxidative Desulfurization Performance

Chao Wang,Junchao Ding,Haoyu Wu,Jiaxuan Zhang,Jing Xu,Ying Zhang,Mindan Ma,Ming Zhang,Hongping Li

The effective and deep removal of unreactive sulfides to achieve ultra-low-sulfur or sulfur-free oils has recently attracted extensive attention. In this work, a series of UiO-66 based catalysts have been prepared facilely for the effective removal of unreactive sulfides. Here, the incorporation of nitro functional groups into UiO-66, along with the construction of defects, results in remarkable sulfur removal for dibenzothiophene (DBT), achieving oil with sulfur content of less than 1 ppm. The successful construction of the designed catalysts was verified through a series of characterization studies. The exposed unsaturated metal sites help provide significantly more active reaction sites. In addition, the incorporated nitro group, with its electron-withdrawing property, would help increase the Lewis acidity of the catalytic metal sites. Thus, the catalytic oxidative capability of the designed UiO-66-based catalysts would be significantly increased. The enhanced catalytic oxidative performance helps ensure acceptable sulfur removal for oils with much higher sulfur concentrations. Additionally, the catalyst developed in this work can also be used to remove the derivatives of DBT with even lower reactivity. The relatively mild reaction conditions, combined with the exceptional sulfur removal, demonstrate the practicality of this reaction system.

Unveiling the Mechanism of Plasma-Catalyzed Oxidation of Methane to C2+ Oxygenates over Cu/UiO-66-NH2

Chong Qi,Yifu Bi,Yaolin Wang,Hong Yu,Yuanyu Tian,Peijie Zong,Qinhua Zhang,Haonan Zhang,Mingqing Wang,Tao Xing,Mingbo Wu,Xin Tu,Wenting Wu

Nonthermal plasma (NTP) offers the potential for converting CH4 with CO2 into liquid products under mild conditions, but controlling liquid selectivity and manipulating intermediate species remain significant challenges. Here, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the Cu/UiO-66-NH2 catalyst in promising the conversion of CH4 and CO2 into oxygenates within a dielectric barrier discharge NTP reactor under ambient conditions. The 10% Cu/UiO-66-NH2 catalyst achieved an impressive 53.4% overall liquid selectivity, with C2+ oxygenates accounting for ∼60.8% of the total liquid products. In situ plasma-coupled Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) suggests that Cu facilitates the cleavage of surface adsorbed COOH species (*COOH), generating *CO and enabling its migration to the surface of Cu particles. This surface-bound *CO then undergoes C–C coupling and hydrogenation, leading to ethanol production. Further analysis using CO diffuse reflection FTIR and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicates that in situ generated surface *CO is more effective than gas-phase CO (g) in promoting C–C coupling and C2+ liquid formation. This work provides valuable mechanistic insights into C–C coupling and C2+ liquid production during plasma-catalytic CO2 oxidation of CH4 under ambient conditions. These findings hold broader implications for the rational design of more efficient catalysts for this reaction, paving the way for advancements in sustainable fuel and chemical production.
