Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) is an effective technology for the deactivation of antibiotics in environmental matrices. Although carbon-based catalysts exhibit good durability in EHDC, their catalytic performance is limited by suboptimal electronic structures. In this study, a core/shell catalyst consisting of a defective tungsten oxide core and a graphitic carbon shell (WO 3 @GP) was fabricated to enhance the catalytic activity of carbon materials in EHDC. WO 3 @GP achieved a mass activity of 80 g FLO h −1 g −1 (533 g FLO h −1 m −2 ) and a florfenicol (FLO) removal efficiency of 99.6 % in treating 20 mg L −1 of FLO at −1.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl, outperforming single carbon black, WO 3 , and previously reported carbon-based catalysts. Mechanistic studies revealed that the oxygen defects in WO 3 facilitated interfacial electron transfer from the core to GP shell, elevating the Fermi level of the GP shell from −4.18 eV (pristine GP) to −3.89 eV. This upward shift reduced the energy gap toward the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO, −2.57 eV) of the C Cl bond in FLO, improving electronic orbital alignment and accelerating electron transfer for enhanced EHDC. Moreover, WO 3 @GP effectively suppressed FLO resistance gene expression in swine wastewater, reducing its relative abundance from 48.2 to 0.96. This study demonstrated that defective metal oxide core-supported carbon shell represents a viable strategy for activating carbon-based catalytic systems.

A transparent nanoporous Pd-WO 3 -Nafion film is developed for gasochromic H 2 leak detection. • The Nafion overlayer significantly boosts the transmittance variation and response kinetics. • A semi-enclosed attachable H 2 leak detector with a top vent ensures the safe upward release of H 2 . • The reusable and detachable detector allows precise visual localization of leaks in H 2 systems. Hydrogen (H 2 ) is a promising clean energy carrier, but its high leakage risk and explosive nature demand safe and reliable detection technology. Here, we present a reusable and attachable H 2 leak detector based on a transparent gasochromic Pd-WO 3 -Nafion film. The film consists of a nanoporous WO 3 layer decorated with an ultrathin Pd (2 nm) catalyst and a Nafion overlayer. It exhibits a transmittance variation of approximately 59% (from 75% to 16%) upon exposure to 4% H 2 , with a coloring time of 69 s and a bleaching time of 117 s. Notably, the Nafion coating significantly enhances the transmittance variation and response kinetics compared to Nafion-free films. Building on this material, we design a semi-enclosed detector with a top vent for safe upward H 2 release and clear visual detection. Its detachable configuration enables repeated use and precise leak localization across complex systems, providing a cost-effective, visually intuitive solution for H 2 infrastructure. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on phosphotungstic acid–TiO 2 composites (PT) and WO 3 nanoparticle incorporated TiO 2 photoanodes were successfully constructed by doctor blading TiO 2 paste containing PT and various amounts of WO 3 . Film features were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Photoelectrochemical properties were examined by the photocurrent–voltage ( J – V ) curves as well as monochromatic incident photon-to-photocurrent conversion efficiency and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Compared with the DSSC based on pure P25 films, that based on PT/P25 films yielded a 16.9% higher J sc and a 21.3% higher η , while that based on PT/P25 + 1/70WO 3 films resulted in a 49.2% higher J sc and a 40.3% higher η . EIS data demonstrated that charge transfer resistance was clearly reduced by introducing PT and WO 3 into TiO 2 films. The introduction of PT and WO 3 was observed to promote electron transfer and retard recombination synergistically, leading to a significant improvement in cell performance.

Self-assembled three-dimensional tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) structures were synthesized using a low-cost hydrothermal process. By adjusting the pH of the precursor solution, monoclinic WO 3 (m-WO 3 ) and hexagonal WO 3 (h-WO 3 ) were fabricated. The morphology, structure, chemical composition, and gasochromic properties of both WO 3 phases were systematically characterized. The results showed that, compared to m-WO 3 sensors, h-WO 3 sensors exhibited a faster response time (23.43 s) and higher contrast (ΔE = 6.88) to 1 % hydrogen at room temperature. Furthermore, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) not only explained the excellent sensing performance of h-WO 3 but also refined the understanding of the gasochromic mechanism of WO 3 . The combination of experimental and theoretical studies provides a detailed explanation of the differences in gasochromic properties between the two WO 3 crystal phases. h-WO₃ possesses a unique intracrystalline tunnel structure, which provides more adsorption sites and enables faster electron transport. This work offers a feasible strategy for designing novel hydrogen sensors and holds practical significance for hydrogen leak detection and traceability.

Polymer-based composites are receiving more and more attention in the field of radiation shielding due to their good recyclability and processability; however, the poor compatibility between the organic polymer matrices and inorganic fillers usually appears as a bottleneck to their full shielding effectiveness. Although compatibilizers are widely utilized to suppress the agglomeration of inorganic fillers, their impact on the overall performance of composites is less concerning. In this study, we systematically investigate the effects of three common compatibilizers, i.e. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550), 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (AM), and maleic anhydride–grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH), on the properties of WO3/PP composites, including rheological performance, thermal properties, crystallization behaviors, mechanical properties, and radiation shielding effectiveness. It was found that in addition to dispersing WO3 particles, KH550 and AM contribute to the formation of a heterogeneous network structure in the PP matrix, and especially for KH550, it can effectively promote the structural stability, thermal stability, crystallinity, and toughness of WO3/PP composites. More importantly, WO3/PP-S-K exhibits the best shielding performance, with linear attenuation coefficients of 3.71 cm−1 and 0.279 cm−1 under 241Am (59.6 keV) and 60Co (1332 keV) irradiation, respectively. Compared with the pristine WO3/PP composite, the half-value layer is markedly reduced to 0.187 cm and 2.48 cm, representing decreases of 25.5% and 60.6%.These findings underscore the enhancements in shielding performance and structural integrity achieved through modification with KH550, thereby providing valuable insights for the future development of environmentally friendly radiation shielding materials.

Heterojunction engineering has garnered significant attention in photocatalysis as an effective strategy to address the rapid carrier recombination dynamics in semiconductor photocatalysts. The core challenge in constructing high-performance heterojunction systems lies in establishing optimized interfacial connections to achieve directional charge carrier migration. This study proposed a temperature-regulated band engineering strategy, through precise control of Ni-MOFs growth temperature and integration with WO 3-x possessing exceptional photothermal conversion capacity, to successfully construct an efficient Z-scheme heterojunction system. When the synthesis temperature of the Ni-MOF reached 140 °C, its conduction band negatively shifted to −1.2 eV (vs. NHE), resulting in a well-matched Z-scheme heterojunction with WO 3-x . The optimized 140-Ni-MOF/WO 3-x heterojunction demonstrated remarkable enhancement in charge separation efficiency while preserving strong redox capabilities through the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. Under mild gas-solid reaction conditions (H 2 O as electron donor), the optimized catalyst exhibited excellent CO 2 reduction performance, achieving a CO production rate of 111.17 μmol·g −1 with 96.92 % selectivity. The temperature-depended modulation strategy for MOF electronic band structure proposed in this study paved the way for constructing efficient MOF-based photocatalysts.

Currently, the development of semiconducting metal oxide (SMO)-based gas sensors with innovative modification and three-dimensional (3D) structural designs has become a significant scientific interest due to their potential for addressing key technological challenges. Herein, gas sensing devices based on the 3D hierarchical monoclinic-type structural Sb-doped WO3 (HMSW) gas sensing material were successfully constructed by ordered assembly of urchin-like monoclinic-type structural (P2/m) Sb-doped WO2.72 (W18O49) (UMSW) nanocrystals and nanowires. The crystalline microstructure, composition, morphological characteristics, and possible growth mechanisms were systematically investigated. The results of the gas sensor measurements, performed simultaneously on multiple samples, indicated that the 3D HMSW material has superior sensitivity (S = 122) and high selectivity to ppm-level NO2 at 30 °C with a significantly larger response than the best-reported values from other WO3-based gas sensors fabricated so far. All the results clearly demonstrate that the combined effects of abundant structural defects derived from Sb doping modification, reduced band gap, and 3D hierarchical microstructure synergistically play a key role in the NO2 gas sensing performance. Such excellent gas sensing performance foresees the great potential application of 3D hierarchical structural WO3-based sensors for fast and effective detection of toxic gases that can aid in human health and public safety.

The sensor for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection plays a crucial role in environmental monitoring and human health. However, traditional oxide-based NO2 sensors often suffer from high operating temperatures, low sensitivity, and inherent rigidity. In this work, a high-performance, wearable NO2 gas sensor that can work at room temperature was developed based on a nanocomposite of single-crystal tungsten oxide (WO3) and tin dioxide (SnO2). The results show that the fabricated SnO2/WO3 based sensor demonstrates superior performance than the bare WO3 sensors. Specifically, the Sn/W-O-12 based sensor shows a remarkable response of 27.5% to 5 ppm NO2, a low detection limit of 218 ppb at room temperature. Furthermore, its response/recovery time to 0.8 ppm NO2 is 63/38 s, respectively. The sensing device also exhibits excellent humidity resistance (50%) and long-term stability (90 days). The enhanced NO2 sensing performance can be attributed to the formation of heterojunction interface, achieved by the dispersion of small-sized SnO2 particles onto WO3 nanorods, which increases the specific surface area and facilitates charge transfer and gas molecule adsorption on the surface. Additionally, a NO2 gas detection and alarm system was constructed to realize the real-time display and alarm functions. This work contributes to the detection of low concentrations of NO2 at room temperature, fostering the development of wearable sensing systems.

The practical application of chemiresistive hydrogen (H 2 ) sensors based on WO 3 is frequently hampered by high operating temperatures and limited response amplitudes. Herein, a high-performance H 2 sensor was present based on PdAg bimetallic nanoparticle-modified WO 3 nanocubes. The WO 3 nanocubes were synthesized via hydrothermal treatment and subsequently functionalized with uniformly dispersed PdAg nanoparticles using a tannic acid (TA)/ascorbic acid (AA)-mediated reduction-precipitation approach. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the PdAg bimetallic system optimizes WO 3 ’s electronic structure, achieving a more negative H 2 adsorption energy (-0.67 eV) than pristine WO 3 (-0.07 eV) and Pd/WO 3 (-0.49 eV), which strengthens H 2 activation. The optimized 0.10 at% PdAg 0.50 -WO 3 sensor demonstrates exceptional performance, operating at 185 °C (a significant reduction of 30 °C compared to pure WO 3 -based sensors) and exhibiting an ultrahigh response (R a /R g = 4348 at 500 ppm H 2 ). Furthermore, this sensor features rapid response/recovery times (1 s/16 s), a low detection limit of 1 ppmH 2 , and negligible reactivity toward common volatile organic compounds (e.g., ethanol, acetone) and inorganic interferents (e.g., CO, CH 4 ). These superior sensing properties are attributed to the synergistic effects of the PdAg/WO 3 Schottky junctions, the enhanced catalytic activity of bimetallic sites for H 2 dissociation and O 2 activation, and the abundant oxygen vacancies that facilitate surface reactions.

The epoxidation of long-chain α-olefins is an effective strategy for optimizing synthetic oil products and expanding their high-value-added derivatives. Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) is a promising catalyst for this reaction, yet pure WO 3 suffers from low specific surface area and a high density of Brønsted acid sites (B acid), resulting in poor activity and selectivity. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) was employed as a support to anchor WO 3 via an in situ growth strategy. Leveraging the strong interaction between the oxygen-containing functional groups of GO and the acidic hydroxyl groups of WO 3 , we achieved both high dispersion and effective reduction of B acid sites on WO 3 , successfully fabricating a high-performance WO 3 /GO catalyst. In the epoxidation of 1-octene, the WO 3 /GO catalyst exhibited excellent performance, specifically, its catalytic activity for producing 1,2-epoxyoctane increased from 7.9 mmol g WO 3 −1 h −1 (pure WO 3 ) to 20.3 mmol g WO 3 −1 h −1 , representing a 2.6-fold enhancement in catalytic efficiency. The catalyst also exhibited excellent performance towards other long-chain α-olefins. This study provides a simple, efficient, and dual-benefit strategy for the structural modification of WO 3 -based catalysts, offering a promising approach for designing low-acid, highly dispersed metal oxide catalysts for the efficient conversion of long-chain α-olefins. In situ anchoring of WO 3 onto GO enables high dispersion and reduced B acidity, boosting 1-octene epoxidation activity by 2.6 times.

Developing a highly efficient and cost-effective catalyst that promotes the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a persistent and significant challenge. This study successfully constructed a WO 3 -modified cobalt phosphide nanoflower-like composite catalyst on nickel foam (CoP@WO 3 /NF) via a simple hydrothermal chemical reaction coupled with a low-temperature phosphidation process, which exhibit exceptional performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). For HER, a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 was achieved at an overpotential of 58 mV, with a corresponding Tafel slope of 73.78 mV·dec −1 . Under identical conditions, the catalyst required 302 mV for OER, accompanied by a Tafel slope of 113.9 mV·dec −1 . Additional evidence from EIS and double-layer capacitance tests confirmed its efficient charge transport and a sizable electrochemically active surface area. These findings present a viable approach for developing the bifunctional electrocatalysts composed of non-noble metals, which are highly applicable for electrochemical water splitting.

The development of highly sensitive hydrogen sensors with low operating temperatures is crucial for the safe utilization of hydrogen. Practical operating environments demand not only high sensitivity but also immunity to both humidity fluctuations and interference from other reducing gases, especially CO. In this work, hierarchical architectures comprising WO 3 nanosheets (NS) assembled on WO 3 microspheres (M) is deliberately designed and successfully synthesized via a two-step solvothermal method. Subsequently, Pt is functionally loaded onto the surfaces, adopting various morphologies and serving multiple functions for H 2 sensing. Notably, the optimal operating temperature is reduced to 50 °C while achieving exceptional sensing characteristics: an ultrahigh response of 8372.2 toward 1200 H 2 , a swift 2 s response time, outstanding selectivity with immunity to CO interference, excellent humidity immunity, and robust long-term stability. The mechanism underlying the superior sensing capability is systematically investigated to elucidate the performance enhancement. This work presents a pioneering approach to constructing high-performance, anti-interference gas sensors through hierarchical architecture engineering, offering new insights into the design and application of advanced sensing materials.
