Preparation of visible-light active MOFs-Perovskites (ZIF-67/LaFeO3) nanocatalysts for exceptional CO2 conversion, organic pollutants and antibiotics degradation

Aftab Khan,Samreen Sadiq,Iltaf Khan,Muhammad Humayun,Guo Jiyuan,Muhammad Usman,Abbas Khan,Shoaib Khan,Amal Faleh Alanazi,Mohamed Bououdina

Modern industries rapid expansion has heightened energy needs and accelerated fossil fuel depletion, contributing to global warming. Additionally, organic pollutants present substantial risks to aquatic ecosystems due to their stability, insolubility, and non-biodegradability. Scientists are currently researching high-performance materials to address these issues. LaFeO 3 nanosheets (LFO-NS) were synthesized in this study using a solvothermal method with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a soft template. The LFO-NS demonstrate superior performance, large surface area and charge separation than that of LaFeO 3 nanoparticles (LFO-NP). The LFO-NS performance is further upgraded by incorporating ZIF-67. Our results confirmed the ZIF-67/LFO-NS nanocomposite have superior performances than pure LFO-NP and ZIF-67. The integration of ZIF-67 has enhanced the charge separation and promote the surface area of LFO-NSwhich was confirmed by various characterization techniques including TEM, HRTEM, DRS, EDX, XRD, FS, XPS, FT-IR, BET, PL, and RAMAN. The 5ZIF-67/LFO-NS sample showed significant activities for CO 2 conversion, malachite green degradation, and antibiotics (cefazolin, oxacillin, and vancomycin) degradation. Furthermore, stability tests have confirmed that our optimal sample very active and stable. Furthermore, based on scavenger experiments and the photocatalytic degradation pathways, it has been established that H + and •O 2 − are vital in the decomposition of MG and antibiotics. Our research work will open new gateways to prepare MOFs-Perovskites nanocatalysts for exceptional CO 2 conversion, organic pollutants and antibiotics degradation.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by mineralized PVDF-TA@Co template based ZIF-67/8 electrospinning membranes for ofloxacin degradation under visible-light

Liusha Cen,Fan Yu,Chengcai Li,Guojin Liu,Wangyong Jin,Hailin Zhu,Yuhai Guo

Recently, heterogeneous catalysts prepared by two phase metals were commonly used to activate PMS degradation. However, the synergistic effects of Zn and other metals on the activation of PMS were infrequently studied. In this work, novel PVDF@TA-ZIF-67/8 nanofibers were prepared successfully by first mineralization and then in-situ growth. The prepared PTZ70 exhibited an evidently higher photocatalytic activity than PVDF, PTC, PTZ0, PTZ10 and PTZ100 to degradation OFX (96.5 %). The effects of the mass ratio of Co and Zn, PMS dosage, coexisting ions and organic solvents on the degradation of OFX were concretely investigated. The radical trapping experiment and mechanism analysis showed that the synergistic effect of Co and Zn played a key role in PMS activation, accelerating the generation of 1 O 2 and •O 2 – . Combining the discussion of influencing factors and LC-MS analysis, four OFX degradation pathways were illustrated. In particular, we observed that the degradation OFX of PTZ70 was only slightly reduced by 5.6 % after five cycling, indicating the reusability, good stability and high environmental suitability of PTZ70 performance . This study offers a novel path for the design of catalytic membranes with controllable heterogeneous metal doping.

ZIF-67 and Biomass-Derived N, S-Codoped Activated Carbon Composite Derivative for High-Effective Removal of Hydroquinone from Water

Xuan Yang,Xueqin Wang,Shenghao Xu,Beili Lu,Biao Huang,Xinyu Zheng,Guanfeng Lin

Hydroquinone (HQ) in wastewater is of great concern, as it is harmful to human health and threatens the ecological environment. However, the existing adsorbents have low adsorption capacity for HQ. To improve the removal of HQ, N,S-codoped activated carbon-ZIF-67 (NSAC-ZIF-67@C) was synthesized in this study by in situ growth of ZIF-67 on N,S-codoped activated carbon (NSAC) and carbonization. The influence of pH, contact time, and initial concentration on the adsorption behaviors of NSAC-ZIF-67@C on HQ were investigated. Owing to the synergistic effect of abundant active sites and well-developed pore structure, the NSAC-ZIF-67@C achieved a prominent adsorption capacity of 962 mg·g–1 and can still retain high adsorption performance after 5 cycles for HQ, which is superior to that of reported other adsorbents. HQ adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (R2 = 0.99999) and the Freundlich isotherm model. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis before and after adsorption as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculation results showed that pyridinic-N-termini were conducive to the π–π interactions and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of NSAC-ZIF-67@C on HQ involve pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π–π interaction, and hydrogen bonding. This study is expected to provide a reference for designing highly effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

ZIF-67-derived petal-like Co(OH)2-MoO3/NF layered nanosheets as a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Xingnian Duan,Jianmei Cen,Xiaoyu Qiu,Xixiang Liu

The development of high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is key to renewable energy conversion and storage technologies. In this paper, a hierarchical Co(OH) 2 -MoO 3 nanosheets with petal-like architecture was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using ZIF-67/NF as a precursor, and it was used as a direct electrocatalyst for OER. Notably, this petal-like Co(OH) 2 -MoO 3 /NF layered nanosheets not only prevent the agglomeration of nanostructured material , but also facilitate the complete penetration and diffusion of electrolyte.   In addition, due to the strong electronic interaction between Co(OH) 2 and MoO 3 in the Co(OH) 2 -MoO 3 /NF system, Co(OH) 2 -MoO 3 /NF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic OER performance. It has a low overpotential of 273 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and excellent stability.   This study provides a simple and effective strategy for the rational design and structural evolution of MOF-derived materials to achieve inexpensive and effective electrocatalysis.

Hierarchically porous ZIF-67-based Au with enhanced electromagnetic, chemical, and mass-transfer properties for flexible gas–liquid SERS sensing

Guo Jing,Mu Zhi-Mei,Yu Jing,Sun Guan-Liang,Hou Lin-Rui,Qiao Xue-Zhi,Yang Shi-Kuan,Zhang Xing-Shuang,Xu Guan-Chen,Liu Guo-An,Yang Fan,Yuan Chang-Zhou,Liang Xiu

Metal–organic framework materials exhibit considerable potential as molecularly selective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates because of their microporous structures, which enrich small molecules while excluding larger ones. In this study, we develop a template-assisted chemical-etching strategy to prepare layered tuneable SERS substrates based on hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (HP-ZIF-67) with a rhombic dodecahedral structure. The synergistic SERS enhancement mechanisms of HP-ZIF-67, which combine electromagnetic (EM) and chemical (CM) effects, were systematically studied through numerical simulations and experiments. Calculations revealed that under 633-nm laser excitation, the contributions of the EM and CM effects to the total SERS enhancement factor of HP-ZIF-67 were 60% and 40%, respectively. The hierarchical porous structure enhanced the fluid-flow flux over the microporous ZIF-67 because the increased pore radius reduced the viscous resistance and facilitated rapid molecular transport through the interconnected macro-meso-channels. Precise modulation of the CM and EM effects, combined with enhanced mass transfer, facilitated the development of HP-ZIF-67 and HP-ZIF-67@Au as efficient SERS sensors. An investigation of the relationship between pore-size distribution and EM effects revealed the pivotal role of light confinement by whispering-gallery-mode microcavities in enhancing the SERS performance. The optimised HP-ZIF-67@Au composites functioned as flexible and highly sensitive in situ SERS sensors for gases and liquids, including volatile organic-compound gas and liquid-pesticide residues. This study introduces a novel design concept and provides a robust theoretical foundation for the future development of exhaled-breath point-of-care diagnostic devices and sweat-based wearable biomedical sensors. Synergistic N,P Dual-Doping in ZIF-67-Derived Carbon Frameworks Enables Crystallinity-Optimized PtCo3 for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

Dengzhao Huang,Xinxing Zhan,Lei Tian,Lin Cao,Lihui Lei,Jinshan Xiong,Lingyun Zhou,Juan Tian,Xin Tong

Pt-based alloy catalysts are critical for enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to their tunable electronic structures and high activity. However, achieving precise control over alloy crystallization and optimizing the chemical environment of catalyst supports remain significant challenges. Herein, a PtCo 3 /N,P-CoNC electrocatalyst was synthesized through pyrolysis of ZIF-67 precursors followed by Pt deposition. Synergistic N and P dual-doping adjusts the electronic configuration of the carbon matrix, promotes strong metal-support interactions (MSI), and increases accessible active sites. The catalyst delivers exceptional ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.934   V and a high electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 121.55 m 2 g Pt -1 . Accelerated durability test (ADT) reveals that PtCo 3 /N,P-CoNC exhibits only 16   mV decay in E 1/2 and 81.40% ECSA retention after 30k cycles. This enhanced stability stems from the strong nanoparticle anchoring effect induced by N, P co-doping, which effectively suppresses nanoparticle aggregation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that N, P co-doping synergistically enhances catalytic activity and durability by inducing pronounced electron localization through non-planar P configurations to create an electron-deficient Co environment that strengthens MSI, while simultaneously optimizing the ORR pathway on PtCo 3 (111) surfaces to reduce the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step. This work demonstrates a morphology and doping-engineered strategy to design durable, high-performance ORR catalysts, advancing cost-effective fuel cell systems.

ZIF-67-derived NiCo2O4/NiO hollow nanocages decorated with Ag nanoparticles for humidity tolerance and high sensitivity n-butanol sensing

Xuan Li,Yuyan Cao,Yihui Shen,Yulin Wu,Shicong Cui,Lingli Cheng,Xuechun Yang,Zheng Jiao

Nowadays, designing sensing materials possessing both high sensitivity and humidity resistance is still a challenge in the field of sensing materials. In this work, a ternary Ag nanoparticles decorated NiCo 2 O 4 /NiO (Ag/NiCo 2 O 4 /NiO) composite with hollow nanocage structure has been successfully obtained, which uses ZIF-67 as a template combined with self-etching method, followed by NaBH 4 reduction of silver ions. For the synergistic effect of the novel morphology, the presence of Ag nanoparticles and hydroxyl absorbent NiO, and the formation of p-p heterojunction between NiCo 2 O 4 and NiO, Ag/NiCo 2 O 4 /NiO exhibits good humidity resistance and high-sensitive to n-butanol. The mesoporous hollow nanocage morphology not only provides abundant adsorption sites for target gases, but also facilitates the diffusion of water molecules. The doping of Ag nanoparticles can regulate the adsorption of oxygen on the surface of gas sensing materials, improving the sensitivity while suppressing the hydroxyl poisoning reaction process. The hydroxyl absorbent NiO in Ag/NiCo 2 O 4 /NiO can both directly absorb water and form p-p heterojunction structure with NiCo 2 O 4 , which improves sensor performance while suppressing hydroxyl poisoning. In the gas sensing tests, the optimal Ag/NiCo 2 O 4 /NiO composites can achieve a high response value of 31.41, as well as rapid response/recovery times (65 s/47 s) to 100 ppm n-butanol at the working temperature of 170 °C. Moreover, it displays a wide detection range (1–120 ppm), a low detection limit (0.27 ppm), excellent selectivity to n-butanol, and superior long term stability (maintaining a response value of 84.68 % after 14 days). Notably, the optimal Ag/NiCo 2 O 4 /NiO demonstrates great humidity-tolerant ability with a response values fluctuation of 16 % under the range of 33 %-80 % relative humidity. This research provides a feasible approach for designing practical gas sensing materials with high sensitivity and moisture resistance.

Sulfidation-induced ZIF-67 melting and remodeling to enhance its interfacial bonding with hollow carbon microtubes for improving capacitive performance

Weijun Ma,Xuxin Qiu,Weihong Guo,Xin Lu,Jiarui Zhu,Zhuoqi Wang,Yi Zhang,Qiuju Zheng,Dan Liu,Changlong Sun,Dongdong Zhang

A robust interfacial bonding between CoS 2 and porous carbon with hierarchical ion fast channels is crucial for fabricating capacitive materials with high stability and rate performance. Herein, a method for high-temperature sulfidation-induced ZIF-67 melting and remodeling at the surface of cotton-derived hollow tubular carbon fiber is employed to achieve the interfacial welding of porous carbon/CoS 2 with carbon fiber, thereby constructing a vascular-like scar-shaped CoS 2 -C C -C KF . Through the in-situ reconfiguration of ZIF-67-derived carbon framework mediated by Co 2+ /2-MIM molar ratio, CoS 2 -C C -C KF achieves the multiscale collaboration among the conductive network (cotton fiber-derived carbon, C KF ), the interface bridging layer (ZIF-67-derived carbon, C C ), and the active pseudocapacitive CoS 2 nanoparticles, forming an integrated ionic-electronic conductor hierarchical architecture. CoS 2 -C C -C KF exhibits a low electron transfer impedance of 0.15 and a high ionic diffusion coefficient of 4.7 × 10 −5  cm 2  s −1 after calculation. CoS 2 -C C -C KF exhibits a specific capacitance of 997.4 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , and it still maintains 81 % of its specific capacitance at 10 A g −1 , which is higher than that of CoS 2 -C A -C KF (375.0 F g −1 , 69 %) and CoS 2 -C B -C KF (638.0 F g −1 , 75 %). The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor achieves a high energy density of 47.4 Wh kg −1 at 375.0 W kg −1 and exhibits excellent cycle stability (maintaining 81 % capacity after 10,000 cycles). These results demonstrate that the melting reconstruction strategy of ZIF-67 on carbon substrate can enhance the interfacial bonding strength of porous carbon/ CoS 2 , thereby improving their cycling stability in supercapacitors.

Peroxymonosulfate activation for the efficient removal of organic pollutant by ZIF-67-derived low-crystalline CuCoOx with abundant oxygen vacancies

Fei Yan,Luao Wu,Yanxin Quan,Wenhui You,Ping Li,Lina Wei,Guangle Zhou,Lidong Wang

In this study, low-crystalline CuCoO x with abundant oxygen vacancies (O v ) were prepared by hydrothermal-calcination method using ZIF-67 as the precursor. Abundant O v in the catalyst enhanced the activation of PMS for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The optimum catalyst Cu 1 Co 1 O x -2 completely removed BPA with a high rate constant of 0.544 min −1 , and it remained high activity in a wide pH range of 3–11. EPR analysis, electrochemical tests and quenching experiments revealed that the Cu 1 Co 1 O x -2/PMS system degraded BPA via radical (SO 4 •− , •OH, O 2 •− ), and non-radical ( 1 O 2 , electron trasfer) pathways, with O 2 •− playing a predominant role. The synergistic effect between O v and the bimetal synergy in the catalysts is the key for enhancing PMS activation. DFT analysis confirmed that the surface O v of Cu 1 Co 1 O x -2 enhanced the chemisorption of PMS on neighboring cobalt ions and facilitated the cleavage of the O-O bond of PMS. In addition, O v enhanced the interfacial charge transfer to PMS, hence boosting PMS activation with a lower energy barrier. This method is useful for eliminating refractory organic pollutants in water.

Rational Design of Mn-Doped ZIF-67-Derived MnxCoOy Catalysts with Tailored Oxygen Vacancies for Sustainable Synthesis of Carbonyl Compounds

Zhigang Zhang,Yuntao Hu,Xiangyu Sun,Guan Wang,Huaiqing Zhao

Catalytic oxidation plays a pivotal role in the chemical industry. Among various approaches, the strategy involving O2 as a green oxidant and H2O as a solvent for the efficient oxidation of organic compounds has garnered significant interest because it aligns with the principles of sustainable development. However, the inherent inertness of ground-state oxygen molecules poses a significant challenge in the development of non-noble-metal catalysts that can activate O2 to reactive oxygen species. Inspired by the regulatory effects of metal doping on the oxygen vacancy content and electronic properties of materials, we developed a bimetallic oxide catalyst MnxCoOy, derived from Mn-doped ZIF-67, for catalytic oxidation with oxygen. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, XPS, N2 adsorption–desorption, Raman, and FTIR) reveals that Mn species doping substitutes Co2+ at tetrahedral CoO4 sites, modulating the catalyst’s oxygen vacancy concentration and electronic distribution. The optimized MnxCoOy with suitable oxygen vacancy concentration exhibits superior performance in the selective oxidation of organic molecules containing benzyl sp3 C–H bonds. The cyclic and amplification experiments indicate the potential application value of the catalyst. This work provides fundamental insights into the design of multipurpose catalysts for catalytic oxidation through the metal doping strategy, which also offers a sustainable approach for obtaining carbonyl compounds.

ZIF-67-derived Co-N-C with lower graphitization as heat-core material for boosted photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H2 evolution

Kun Geng,Pengnian Shan,Lijing Wang,Feng Guo,Weilong Shi

Carbon-based materials have attracted considerable attention in the field of photothermal catalysis owing to their exceptional chemical stability, wide-range light harvesting and high photothermal conversion efficiency. In this work, ZIF-67 was pyrolyzed at different temperatures to produce Co-N-C materials with varying graphitization degrees, revealing that lower graphitization leads to superior photothermal performance. Herein, they are employed as heat-core material and integrated with ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) to form composites via a water-bath method for photothermally promoted photocatalytic H 2 production. Experimental resutls reveals that the low-graphitized Co-N-C features abundant structural defects to construct highly active surface sites and exhibits a strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect that efficiently converts photons into phonons, thereby elevating the local surface temperature of the catalyst. Meanwhile, the interfacial interaction formed between the low-graphitized Co-N-C and ZIS in Co-N-C@ZIS composite effectively promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing the performance of the photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H 2 generation with achieving an H 2 generation rate of 14.09 mmol g −1  h −1 under full-spectrum illumination, 12.04-fold higher than pure ZIS (1.17 mmol g −1  h −1 ). The work provides valuable insights and strategies for significantly enhancing photothermally promoted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution through the utilization of carbon-based heat-core materials.

Core–Shell-Structured Co–Z@TiO2 Catalysts Derived from ZIF-67 for Efficient Production of C5+ Hydrocarbons in Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Hu Wang,Bingxia Wu,Yuan Cai,Chengwei Zhou,Nengjie Feng,Geng Liu,Chong Chen,Hui Wan,Lei Wang,Guofeng Guan

The core–shell-structured Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst, which was prepared by subsequent pyrolysis and calcination from precursor ZIF-67 coated by amorphous TiO2, was applied in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Compared with Co–Z@TiO2 catalyst, which was directly calcinated in air (Co–Z@TiO2(O2)) or pyrolyzed in N2 (Co–Z@TiO2(N2)), the Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst showed better dispersion, easier reducibility, and optimal metal cobalt particle size (8.4 nm) due to the intermediate pyrolysis treatment and core–shell structure. The Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst exhibited high cobalt time yield (14.84 μmolCO·gCo–1·s–1), high selectivity to C5+ (81.5%), and low selectivity to low carbon hydrocarbon (CH4 (12.7%) and C2–C4 (5.8%)). The core–shell structure could enhance diffusion limitations to transform intermediate products into heavier hydrocarbons. After 110 h of evaluation, the Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst still maintained good catalytic performance and cobalt particle size distribution.
