TA@ZIF-8 was synthesized via impregnation for selective Rb + /Cs + recovery from salt-lake brine. • Optimal TA loading (5 g L −1 ) maximizes active sites while preventing self-aggregation. • Rapid kinetics (30 min) and high selectivity for Rb + /Cs + in complex brine matrices. • Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm indicate ion exchange–driven uptake. • >82% capacity retained after five cycles, demonstrating robust stability and reusability. Driven by the demand for rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs), an adsorption-based strategy employing a tannic acid (TA)-functionalized ZIF-8 composite adsorbent (TA@ZIF-8) was developed for the selective extraction of Rb + and Cs + from salt-lake brine. The incorporation of TA introduced phenolic hydroxyl groups, which significantly enhanced the affinity of ZIF-8 toward alkali metal ions, and enabled efficient adsorption of Rb + and Cs + . The material was systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Bath adsorption experiments demonstrated that TA@ZIF-8 achieved maximum capacities of 0.492 mmol g −1 for Rb + and 0.484 mmol g −1 for Cs + within 30 min under alkaline conditions (pH = 11), with high selectivity against competing ions (e.g., Na + , K + ). The adsorption behavior was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a chemisorption-controlled monolayer adsorption process. Furthermore, the adsorbent retained over 80% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability and structural stability. This work highlights the potential of polyphenol-functionalized metal–organic framework adsorbents for the efficient recovery of alkali metal resources. ZIF-8 is an ideal membrane material for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. However, its inherent framework flexibility leads to structural changes under external pressure, impairing the C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation performance. In this work, ZIF-8 membranes were decorated with a low-cost polyether-block-amide copolymer, Pebax 2533. The copolymer, containing flexible PTMO segments and rigid PA12 segments, enhanced the rigidity of the ZIF-8 framework through confinement effects and interfacial interactions. The resultant ZIF-8 P2533 membranes exhibit excellent pressure-resistant separation performance. As the transmembrane pressure was increased from 0 to 6 bar, the separation factor increased by 49%, from 152 to 227, while the C 3 H 6 flux reached 2.25 × 10 −3 mol·m −2 ·s −1 , outperforming most currently reported C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation membranes. This work demonstrates that Pebax 2533 post-modification significantly enhances the separation stability of ZIF-8 membranes under high-pressure conditions, highlighting their potential for practical C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation, although further enhancement of permeance is still desirable.

A pH-responsive MBT/Ce-ZIF-8@TA nanocontainer system was developed to enhance the corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings. Porous Ce-ZIF-8 cores loaded with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) were encapsulated by a functional tannic acid (TA) shell. In this system, TA acts as a “gatekeeper,” preventing premature leakage in neutral environments while triggering inhibitor release under corrosive stimuli. Release kinetics reveal a distinctive “on-demand” mechanism: while stable at neutral pH, a rapid burst release (87.84% in 24 h) occurs at pH 3.0, ensuring immediate delivery of inhibitors to passivate defects. The nanocontainers are uniformly dispersed in the epoxy matrix, significantly enhancing long-term corrosion protection. After 60 days of immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl, the composite coating exhibits an impedance modulus 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure epoxy. Notably, scratched coatings demonstrate superior active self-protection, with Rc recovering from 7.76 × 109 Ω·cm2 to 1.58 × 1010 Ω·cm2 within 24 h. This enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic combination of physical barrier reinforcement and pH-triggered chemical passivation by the released inhibitors.

TiO 2 is a widely studied photocatalyst, but its practical performance is limited by poor light utilization and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a TiO 2 -ZIF-8 heterojunction with a chemically bonded interface was constructed through the formation of Ti-O-Zn interfacial bonds. This design integrates the strong adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 with improved charge separation and transfer across the heterojunction. The optimized TiO 2 -ZIF-8 composite showed markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity, achieving 94.6% degradation of methylene blue within 120 min under simulated solar irradiation. Its apparent rate constant reached k = 0.01508 min -1 , which is 1.55 and 2.38 times higher than those of pristine TiO 2 and ZIF-8, respectively. XPS, FTIR, TEM, and PL results confirm the successful construction of the heterojunction and reveal the key role of Ti-O-Zn bonding in strengthening interfacial interaction and facilitating photogenerated carrier migration. Meanwhile, the strong interfacial interaction improved the structural stability of the composite and helped inhibit nanoparticle agglomeration during photocatalysis. Overall, this work provides new insight into the design of high-performance MOF-based photocatalytic systems through interfacial chemical bond engineering.

Due to their poor resistance to swelling, developing biomass-based radionuclide-capturing aerogel adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and excellent mechanical stability remains a significant challenge. This paper describes a dual-network aerogel constructed using a multiscale interface-control strategy, leveraging Zn2+-induced chitosan precross-linking and entanglement of oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (ox-CMC). Within this stable framework, ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized in situ. This design, through physical entanglement and chemical cross-linking, suppressed the swelling of the dual-network framework. After 30 days of soaking, its tensile strength remained approximately 0.48 MPa, and it also exhibited good compressive resilience. Simultaneously, the nitrogen-rich channels of ZIF-8 synergize with the negatively charged surface of the dual network (zeta potential: −40.5 mV), resulting in an Sr2+ adsorption capacity of 226.8 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of many clay- or polymer-based adsorbents. After 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, the aerogel retained 85.8% of its initial properties. This multiscale interface design provides a robust strategy for preparing swelling-resistant, high-performance biomass aerogels for advanced radioactive wastewater treatment.

The efficient removal of radioactive iodine from aqueous nuclear waste is hindered by its high mobility and water solubility. Here, robust three-dimensional (3D) printed ZIF-8 monoliths were fabricated via a direct ink writing strategy and evaluated for aqueous iodine removal. A highly loaded printable ink containing up to 80 wt% ZIF-8 was formulated using carboxymethyl cellulose and kaolin, enabling the construction of mechanically stable monoliths with interconnected macroporous channels, while the intrinsic microporosity and crystallinity of ZIF-8 were well preserved. Static adsorption experiments using I 3 ‒ solutions showed a high iodine uptake capacity of 1.4 g g −1 at room temperature. Notably, the monolithic architecture significantly improved water stability and recyclability, retaining 83.8% of the initial removal efficiency after five adsorption–regeneration cycles, whereas ZIF-8 powders degraded rapidly and retained only 75.8% efficiency after two cycles. Dynamic column tests further demonstrated effective iodine removal under continuous flow conditions up to 1.5 mL min −1 . Structural analyses confirmed structural integrity after 3D printing and iodine adsorption, while elemental mapping revealed a homogeneous iodine distribution within the monolith. This work highlights 3D printing as an effective route to transform MOF powders into water-stable monolithic adsorbents for practical aqueous radioiodine remediation.

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is a key feedstock for clean energy, and efficient separation of H 2 /CO 2 is an important link. To solve classic ZIF-8 membrane difficulties, such as long preparation times and weak binding force between crystals and supports, this work used an innovative gel-assisted in-situ growing approach. Specifically, a zinc-based gel was placed onto the PSf support and thermally activated, resulting in the creation of an ultra-thin dense membrane with a thickness of about 100 nm. The effects of reaction time and 2-MIM concentration on membrane performance were thoroughly examined. The results showed that the 0.8-ZIF-8-40 membrane had the best separation performance. The resulting 0.8-ZIF-8-40 membrane exhibited an H 2 permeance of 2200 GPU and an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 33, surpassing the Robeson upper bound (2008). Furthermore, the membrane maintained good separation performance after 60 h of continuous operation.

Gas separation using metal organic framework (MOF) membranes has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Despite the progress made, establishing thin, defect-free MOF layers within the porous polymer remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel approach is reported for the preparation of ZIF-8/Polyethersulfone (ZIF-8/PES) composite membranes via non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS)-triggered in-situ crystallization strategy. In this method, PES serves as a solid solvent for Zn(NO 3 ) 2 . During the NIPS process, an asymmetric PES membrane with a skin layer, finger-like pores, and interconnected foam structures is formed. Concurrently, Zn(NO 3 ) 2 diffuses to the skin layer and reacts with 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM), yielding a dense ZIF-8 layer on the PES surface. The simultaneous nucleation and growth of ZIF-8 within the polymer create strong interfacial interactions at the organic-inorganic interface. These interactions improve the compatibility between ZIF-8 and the polymer matrix, reduce interfacial defects. As a result, the composite membrane exhibits enhanced mechanical stability. When the crystallization time is extended to 48 h, the thickness of the ZIF-8 layer reaches approximately 540 nm, and the membrane exhibits an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 72.3 ± 3.35 at 298 K. This study provides a facile and effective route for constructing thin MOF membranes on polymeric matrix for high-performance gas separation.

Osteosarcoma remains a highly aggressive primary bone
malignancy,
and its clinical treatment is frequently limited by chemoresistance,
systemic toxicity, and insufficient tumor-specific drug accumulation.
To address these challenges, we developed an OS-7.9 aptamer-functionalized
ZIF-8 nanoscale platform for the targeted codelivery of sorafenib
(SFN) and GPX4 siRNA, designated O-SR-ZIF-8, with the intended application
of ferroptosis-based osteosarcoma therapy. The resulting nanoparticles
exhibited a uniform nanoscale size distribution, favorable colloidal
stability, high payload-loading capacity, and pH-responsive release
behavior. The ZIF-8 nanostructure remained relatively stable under
physiological conditions but promoted accelerated release of SFN and
GPX4 siRNA in acidic tumor-mimicking microenvironments, supporting
its suitability for tumor-localized delivery. Compared with nontargeted
formulations, O-SR-ZIF-8 markedly enhanced cellular internalization
in MG-63 osteosarcoma cells, inhibited cell proliferation, promoted
cell death, increased intracellular oxidative stress, and suppressed
migration and invasion. In a murine osteosarcoma xenograft model,
systemic administration of O-SR-ZIF-8 significantly restrained tumor
growth through GPX4 silencing and modulation of ferroptosis-related
signaling. Moreover, the nanoscale formulation exhibited favorable
biocompatibility, as evidenced by negligible hemolytic activity and
no obvious histopathological injury in major organs. Together, these
findings indicate that O-SR-ZIF-8 is an aptamer-guided nanoscale therapeutic
platform with potential in the treatment of osteosarcoma through targeted
delivery of sorafenib and GPX4 siRNA to silence genes and increase
oxidative stress associated with ferroptosis.

Nanovoid-engineered TFC membranes fabricated via ZIF-8 sacrificial templates. • Acid etching creates maze-like wrinkled architectures with tubular nanovoids. • Optimized membrane shows 95% higher water permeance than conventional TFCs. • Maintained >97% divalent salt rejection and >99% organic dye rejection. • Controlled nanovoid engineering overcomes permeability-selectivity trade-off. Traditional thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes face an inherent trade-off between water permeance and selectivity in water treatment applications. To overcome this challenge, this study proposes a nanostructure-mediated interfacial polymerization strategy using size-controlled zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles (30-400 nm) as sacrificial templates to construct ordered nanovoid networks. By embedding ZIF-8 nanoparticles at the polyamide (PA)-polysulfone (PSf) interface and subsequently removing them via selective acid etching, a unique maze-like wrinkled architecture with tubular nanovoids is successfully generated. Systematic investigation reveals that the optimized membrane (TFC-200A, using 200 nm templates) achieves a remarkable pure water permeance of 15.7 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 -a 95% enhancement over conventional TFC membranes-while maintaining excellent selectivity, specifically >92% rejection for Na 2 SO 4 and >99% rejection for dyes. The enhanced performance arises from increased surface roughness, improved hydrophilicity, and laterally interconnected interfacial nanovoids that shorten water-transport pathways while preserving steric and electrostatic selectivity. Nanovoid continuity, rather than surface corrugation alone, governs permeance, with the effective template-size window limited by nanovoid discontinuity and PA-arch collapse. This controlled nanovoid engineering provides a highly effective pathway to break the permeance-selectivity trade-off, showing great promise for advanced wastewater treatment, dye removal, and desalination applications. A CMLA-biomimetic coating on ZIF-8 enables Dectin-1-mediated macrophage-targeted quercetin delivery. • The nanoplatform exhibits pH-responsive sustained release and 6.35-fold enhanced cellular uptake in macrophages. • Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA restores LPS-induced TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 to normal levels, outperforming free quercetin. To address the limitations of quercetin (Qu), including low bioavailability, limited targeting, and insufficient synergistic enhancement, we developed a ZIF-8-based nanodelivery system (Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA) coated with a carboxymethyl laminarin (CMLA) layer. The platform was designed for macrophage-targeted delivery with potential for oral administration. Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA exhibited a hydrodynamic diameter of 151.5 nm, a drug loading capacity of 15.2%, and colloidal stability. Characterization confirmed CMLA coating of the Qu-ZIF-8 surface through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. The resulting nanoparticles maintained structural integrity and exhibited pH-responsive, controlled-release properties. In simulated gastric fluid, Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA released 23.54% of the Qu, whereas release reached 70.08% under simulated intestinal conditions, indicating a more sustained release profile than free Qu. Release kinetic analysis suggested a non-Fickian mechanism involving polysaccharide erosion and drug diffusion. In RAW264.7 macrophages, CMLA modification increased uptake by 6.35-fold, while competitive inhibition with free CMLA significantly attenuated this enhancement, supporting the involvement of CMLA-sensitive receptor-associated recognition in macrophage uptake. At high concentrations, Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA maintained higher RAW264.7 cell viability than Qu-ZIF-8 under the tested conditions. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages by measuring TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 secretion using ELISA. Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA significantly reduced three pro-inflammatory cytokines compared with the LPS model group, and no statistically significant differences were detected between the Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA and untreated control groups (p > 0.05). Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA showed significantly greater anti-inflammatory activity than free Qu and Qu-ZIF-8. Collectively, these findings provide in vitro proof of concept for CMLA-modified, macrophage-targeted Qu delivery and support further investigation of this platform for oral anti-inflammatory applications. The development of active packaging with sustained antimicrobial and antioxidant functions is crucial for extending the shelf life of highly perishable fruits. In this study, we developed a novel composite film by incorporating dihydromyricetin (DMY)-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles into a chitosan (CS) matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the good compatibility between ZIF-8@DMY and the chitosan matrix at optimal loadings (2.5–15wt%). Importantly, the incorporation of ZIF-8@DMY significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite films, increasing tensile strength by approximately 4.8-fold (from 1.77 to 8.50 MPa). Concurrently, critical physical properties including water vapor permeability, hydrophilicity and UV-vis transmittance were also enhanced. The composite films exhibited intelligent pH-responsive release of DMY. Furthermore, the ZIF-8@DMY/CS films exhibited potent in vitro antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , with the 5% ZIF-8@DMY/CS film reducing E. coli counts by 5.38 log CFU/mL. In the grape preservation test, the 5% ZIF-8@DMY/CS film effectively mitigated weight loss and retained higher levels of total soluble solids (TSS) and ascorbic acid (V C ) over10 days of cold storage. These findings highlight that ZIF-8@DMY/CS composite films are a promising smart active packaging material for preserving the postharvest quality of fresh produce.
