Zirconium (Zr)-doped NiO films with different contents were successfully synthesized via the chemical spray pyrolysis technique. The structure, morphology, optical and electrochemical behaviors of these films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), UV–Vis-NIR spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and chronoamperometry (CA). XRD results suggested that the synthesized samples have the cubic crystal structure and a preferred orientation along the plane (111). Raman spectra further confirmed the successful incorporation of zirconium ions into the NiO films. SEM images explained that the surfaces of the doped films were composed of uniform and dense nanoparticles. EDS analysis suggested that Zr, Ni and O elements were uniformly distributed on the films. The optical results showed that the band gap decreases from 3.53 eV to 3.47 eV as the increase of zirconium doping content. The electrochemical analysis suggested that zirconium doping improved the specific capacitance of the NiO films (the NiO film with the Zr amount of 7 %, 59 F/g at 6 mV/s). In addition, the NiO film with 5 % Zr doped amount exhibited the largest Δ OD (81 %), the largest CE (60.37 cm 2 /C), and the fastest coloring time ( t c =2.1 s) and bleaching time ( t b = 2.4 s). These results showed that this film had the excellent electrochromic properties, suggesting that the optimal Zr doped amount of NiO films is 5 %. As a novel kind of electrochromic material, the Zr-doped NiO film has broad application prospects in smart windows, green buildings and energy efficient utilization fields.

Increasing amounts of solid waste and sludge have created many environmental management problems. Pyrolysis can effectively reduce the volume of solid waste and sludge, but there is still the problem of heavy metal contamination, which limits the application of pyrolysis in environmental management. The intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (IEMV) by intercalators of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate , hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were used to control the release of Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb during pyrolysis process of sludge or solid waste. The retention of heavy metals in sludge was generally better than that in solid waste. The IEMV by octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as the intercalator calcined 800 °C (STAB-800) was the best additive for heavy metal retention, and the retention of Cr, Cu and Zn was significantly better than that of Pb and Cd. Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb were at low risk, while Cd had considerable risk under certain circumstances. New models were proposed to comprehensively evaluate the results of the risk and forms of heavy metals, and the increasing temperature was beneficial in reducing the hazards of heavy metals by the addition of STAB-800. The reaction mechanism of heavy metals with vermiculite was revealed by simulation of reaction sites, Fukui Function and Frontier Molecular Orbital. Thermal activation-intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (T-IEMV) is more reactive and had more active sites for heavy metals. Mg atoms and outermost O atoms are the main atoms for T-IEMV to react with heavy metals. The Cr, Cu and Zn have better adsorption capacity by T-IEMV than Pb and Cd. This study provides a new insight into managing solid waste and sludge and controlling heavy metal environmental pollution .

Municipal wastewater treatment relies primarily on biological methods, yet effective disposal of residual sludge remains a major challenge. Converting sludge into biochar via oxygen-limited pyrolysis presents a novel approach for waste resource recovery. This study prepared sludge-based biochar (SBC) through one-step pyrolysis of sewage sludge and applied it to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading diverse contaminants. Characterization (SEM, XPS, FTIR) revealed abundant pore structures and diverse surface functional groups on SBC. Using Acid Orange 7 (AO7) as the target pollutant, SBC effectively degraded AO7 across pH 3.0–9.0 and catalyst dosages (0.2–2.0 g·L−1), achieving a maximum observed rate constant (kobs) of 0.3108 min–1. Salinity and common anions showed negligible inhibition on AO7 degradation. SBC maintained 95% degradation efficiency after four reuse cycles and effectively degraded sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, and rhodamine B besides AO7. Mechanistic studies (chemical quenching and ESR) identified singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radicals (O2•−) as the dominant reactive oxygen species for AO7 degradation. XPS indicated a 39% reduction in surface carbonyl group content after cycling, contributing to activity decline. LC-MS identified five intermediates, suggesting a potential degradation pathway driven by SBC/PMS system. ECOSAR model predictions indicated significantly reduced biotoxicity of the degradation products compared to AO7. This work provides a strategy for preparing sludge-derived catalysts for PMS activation and pollutant degradation, enabling effective solid waste resource utilization.

The structure and reactivity of coal is the core problem of coal chemistry, and solving it at the molecular level has been an international unsolved problem. The chemical similarity-based coal chemistry group elevates the study from the macroscopic to the molecular level. However, the previous free radical mechanism lacks experimental confirmation and theoretical computational support. Here, the pyrolysis products of model compounds are first utilized to predict pyrolysis. The hydrogen-donating solvent is then used as a radical trap to confirm the reaction. Subsequently, density functional theory calculations are utilized to aid in the validation. Finally, family components are utilized to demonstrate the universality of the free radical mechanism of coal pyrolysis. This work combines radical trapping with quantum chemical calculations to analyze the radical reaction mechanism of coal pyrolysis in depth at the molecular level. This will provide a theoretical basis for coal pyrolysis and clean and efficient utilization.

Herein, the SAPO-31 produced phenol-rich bio-oil from Arundo donax (AD) via catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) in a fixed bed. Effective variables including type of catalyst, temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) and N 2 flow rate (Nfr) were evaluated to enhance the CFP. The results showed that SAPO-31 demonstrated selectivity of 80.28 % towards naphtha-range compounds and 33.57 % towards phenolic compounds (PCs) within the naphtha range at 500 °C, Nfr of 300 mL min −1 and WHSV of 1 h −1 , contrasting sharply with those of control groups (50.82 % and 14.40 %, respectively), HZSM-5 (67.66 % and 5.51 %, respectively) and Hβ (61.10 % and 25.50 %, respectively). Moreover, SAPO-31 gave the highest bio-oil yielded (26.97 wt%) compared to that of the control group (22.45 wt%), Hβ (22.21 wt%) and HZSM-5 (21.42 wt%). These results indicate that the SAPO-31 self-synthesized exhibits promising capabilities in producing phenol-rich naphtha-range compounds via the CFP of AD.

Thermal conversion technology is an effective means to transform waste plastics into high-value-added products. This study explored the thermal decomposition characteristics and cracking mechanism of four different types of plastics (polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) for thermal conversion technology. The findings revealed that PP exhibited the highest hydrogen yield, reaching 3.56 mmol/g at 510°C. PET's gas production was predominantly comprised of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. PVC gas products contained a significant amount of HCl, followed by hydrogen and methane. For solid products, the carbon yield followed the order PET > PVC > PS > PP, with the carbon content of PET accounting for 35.63% of the total products. PP and PS demonstrated higher oil yields for liquid products than PET and PVC. The oil yield of PP was 94.38%. Further analysis of the cracking mechanism found that during the thermal decomposition process, plastics underwent random fragmentation, leading to reactions such as β-scission, intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen transfer, rearrangement, cyclization, etc., due to structural variations. This work provided foundational data for the thermal decomposition studies of different types of plastics.

Electronic-double-layer supercapacitors (EDLC) usually use activated carbon with large specific surface area and abundant pore structure as the electrode active material for adsorption/desorption of electrolyte ions. Featuring huge yield, low price, multi-level structure, and inherent heteroatoms/functional groups, biomass-derived activated carbon has been demonstrating excellent specific capacitance, low electrochemical impedance, and long-term durability in supercapacitor applications. Loofah sponge is an ideal precursor for activated carbon because of its unique cross-linked parallel channel structure that facilitates ion transfer and storage in supercapacitor. Upon pre‑carbonization combined with KHCO 3 -incorporated activation pyrolysis in this study, the loofah sponge is transformed into a three-dimensional hierarchical porous structured carbon (LC-K1–800), while retaining the primary skeleton and heteroatoms (oxygen and nitrogen) of the biomass. The specific capacitance of LC-K1–800 at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 is measured to be 344 F g −1 , and that at a current density of 1 A g −1 is 296 F g −1 . Moreover, the symmetric two-electrode device assembled by the LC-K1–800 has a specific capacitance of 216 F g −1 at the current density of 0.2 A g −1 and a capacitance retention rate of 103.4 % after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles at the current density of 10 A g −1 , showcasing exceptional cycling stability. Additionally, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte has achieved an energy density of 18 Wh kg −1 in a 1.6 V voltage window. The impressive performance of the LC-K1–800 assembled EDLC is derived from the well-developed hierarchical porous structure, robust carbon skeleton, high specific surface area, as well as the superior hydrophilicity of loofah sponge-derived activated carbon. This work provides an outstanding option for high-performance and cost-effective carbon-based EDLC.

Due to incomplete hydrodeoxygenation, common biofuels, for examples alcohol-ether oxygenated fuels, is prone to oxidation in air and deviates its combustion efficiency and emissions profile. Phenolic antioxidants can substantially raise the oxidative stability of biofuels via the tapping of peroxy radicals. Activated carbon (AC) emerges as efficient catalysts for selective phenol production, even without any surface modification or metals loading. However, it’s still difficult to detect solo contributions of pore channel and native active sites in AC catalysts during reactions, due to their evolution are coupled when preparation. Herein, an ingenious experiment was designed to decouple their contributions via the comparison of three representative AC catalysts, where K-AC and Z-AC possess parallel pore size distribution (average pore size of 1.896 nm vs. 1.837 nm), while Z-AC and P-AC possess parallel acidic active sites. Results tend to the truth that phenol selectivity seems mainly dependent on active sites, where the acidic active site is more efficient than the basic, while little relevant with acidity strength. P-AC and Z-AC showed similar phenol selectivity (67.24 % vs. 65.52 %). Additionally, pore size distribution that performed the role of “shape-selective catalysis” seems mainly contribute to phenol yield, rather than phenol selectivity. So that, the phenol yield in P-AC is almost one-sixth more than Z-AC. Overall, this study provides a promising approach to interpret the mechanism of ACs in catalysis or other high value applications.

The pyrolysis behavior and mechanism of energetic materials are crucial for assessing their safety and application. In this study, the pyrolysis behavior, gas-phase decomposition products, condensate phase products and pyrolysis mechanism of high nitrogen compound 4,4’,6,6’-tetri(azide)-hydrazine-1,3,5-triazine (TAHT) were fully studied through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), thermogravimetric-infrared-mass spectrometry (TG-IR-MS) and in-situ infrared spectroscopy. The results indicate that the thermal behavior of TAHT exhibits a big exothermic decomposition process and an endothermic decomposition process accompanied by mass loss of 42.5 % and 52.1 %, respectively. At the heating rate of 10 o C·min -1 , the peak temperature ( T p ) and decomposition enthalpy of exothermic decomposition process are 230.4 o C and -2021.0 J·g -1 , respectively. The peak temperature ( T p ) of endothermic decomposition process is 703.5 o C. In the exothermic decomposition stage, the main gas-phase decomposition products of TAHT is N 2, and contains small amounts of NH 3 and HCN, the hydrazine bond and azide groups in the condensed-phase almost completely disappear during the pyrolysis process, and the residues form a network structure of triazine ring. Based on the analysis of gas-phase and condensed-phase products, a possible pyrolysis mechanism for TAHT is proposed. This work provides valuable theoretical insights for the application of TAHT as a new green energetic material.

This research focuses on the aging resistance properties of asphalt, which are crucial for determining the lifespan of asphalt pavement. To combat aging, waste tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) is often added to asphalt, enhancing its resistance to aging but compromising high-temperature performance. This study offered a pioneering solution by integrating TPO with polyphosphoric acid (PPA) to address these issues. In this study, we conducted a series of tests to characterize the properties of PPA/TPO modified asphalt, including temperature sweep and bending beam rheometer tests. The results demonstrated that the presence of PPA in the PPA/TPO modified asphalt could improve its high-temperature performance while maintaining its low-temperature properties. Moreover, PPA in the PPA/TPO modified asphalt enhanced the modified asphalt’s resistance to fatigue and deformation during the aging process, while the presence of TPO effectively reduced the impact of thermo-oxidative aging on the modified asphalt during the aging process. Additionally, physicochemical interactions between the base asphalt and modifiers were observed before and after aging. In summary, this study had offered an innovative method to enhance the anti-aging properties of asphalt, and had provided more options for sustainable, environmentally friendly roads.

Hierarchical ZSM-5 (Z-40) was synthesized via a simple two-step hydrothermal crystallization without using any organic template. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as hydrogen donor was added into the catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose to enhance deoxygenation and the formation of BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene). Cellulose and LDPE showed the strongest synergistic effect at a feed ratio of 1, and the obtained experimental BTX yield (22.9 %) was 52.7 % higher than the theoretical yield (15 %). Co-catalytic pyrolysis (CCP) of two polymers followed similar cracking behavior to CCP of their pyrolysis vapor model compounds (furfural and n -octane), mainly including pyrolysis, catalytic cracking of pyrolysis fragments in external surface and hydrocarbons pool reactions of small cracking fragments in the internal micropores of zeolite. Z-40 showed better catalytic performance than the commercial ZSM-5 (higher BTX yield and less coke deposition) due to the appropriate acidic properties and distinctive pore structure. The optimal condition for CCP of cellulose/LDPE was temperature at 550 °C, feed ratio at 1:1 and catalyst/feed ratio at 2:1, and the achieved BTX yield reached 24.5 % with high BTX selectivity of 86.7 %. This work provided a cost-effective method for synthesis of ZSM-5 and production of high value-added BTX via a green non-oil route.

The concept of producing structure–function integrated wave-absorbing ceramics by combining three-dimensional (3D) printing with the precursor conversion method has sparked extensive discussion and research. However, the synergistic enhancement of both the mechanical and electromagnetic (EM) properties of structural wave-absorbing ceramics remains an area requiring further exploration. In this study, we employed the direct ink writing (DIW) process and polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) method to fabricate SiOC/SiCN composites with excellent mechanical and EM properties, modified by the polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) process. The results demonstrated that PIP significantly improved the mechanical properties of SiOC/SiCN composites. After one cycle of infiltration pyrolysis, the compressive strength of the material was 6.3 times that of the unmodified state, and after three cycles, the compressive strength reached 10.13 MPa, which was 12.8 times that of the original. Furthermore, after three cycles of infiltration pyrolysis, the material exhibited effective absorption across the entire X-band range (8.2–12.4 GHz) for thicknesses of 4.0 mm and 4.5 mm, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −64 dB, showcasing excellent wave-absorbing capabilities. This study provides an innovative solution for the synergistic enhancement of both mechanical and EM properties in structure–function integrated wave-absorbing ceramics.
