The construction of artificial solid electrolyte interfaces on zinc anodes is recognized as an effective strategy to mitigate zinc dendrite formation and side reactions; however, existing methods are often complex and time-consuming. In this study, we successfully fabricated a highly stable Sn–Al sol protective layer on the surface of the zinc anode using a simple spray-coating technique. This protective layer significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of zinc symmetric cells, achieving stable cycling for over 2500 h at 1 mA cm–2. In Zn//Cu half-cells, the Sn–Al sol coating improves charge–discharge efficiency and cycling stability, with over 500 and 950 cycles at 1 and 5 mA cm–2, respectively. The average charge–discharge efficiency during stable cycling reaches 95.7%, in contrast to 85.0% for bare Zn, indicating improved utilization of Zn2+. Additionally, the Sn–Al sol coating offers enhanced corrosion resistance and effectively promotes uniform Zn2+ growth along the (101) crystal plane, reducing dendrite formation. Overall, this simple spray-coating approach presents significant potential for high-stability modifications of zinc anodes, offering a novel strategy for the industrial application of zinc-ion batteries.

The combustion efficiency and reactivity of aluminum (Al) particles, as a crucial component in solid propellants, are constrained by the inert oxide layer aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can remove the oxide layer, however, carbon deposition generated during the reaction process still limits the reaction efficiency of Al/PTFE fuel. Here, a litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel with the nano-PTFE islands distributed on the Al particles surface is successfully designed, based on localized activation and synergistic reaction strategies, to solve the Al 2 O 3 layer and carbon deposition. This unique PTFE-coated structure can achieve localized activation of Al by surface etching, creating reaction channels, and exposing the active Al. Such a channel network promotes the circulation of fluorine and oxygen, stimulating the synergistic reactions of Al-F and Al-O and energy output. Regulating the PTFE content can maximize the elimination of carbon deposition and achieve the full combustion reaction of Al/PTFE. The maximum flame area and pressure output of the litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel increased by 241.9%, 734.7%, 118.4%, and 265.2%, respectively, compared with traditional physical mixture and core-shell structure Al/PTFE fuels. The localized activation and synergistic effects of litchi-like structure effectively transform carbon waste into a valuable resource, introducing a novel approach for the propellants.

The Jahn-Teller effect and Mn dissolution always restrict the practical electrochemical properties of spinel LiMn 2 O 4 cathode material. Herein, a low-temperature solid-state combustion method is employed to synthesize various truncated octahedral LiZn 0.03 Al x Mn 1.97- x O 4 ( x ≤ 0.08) with submicron structure. The Zn/Al dual-doping is conducive to forming {110} and {100} planes, and is also beneficial to the crystal development of LiMn 2 O 4 . It is found that as the amount of Al doping increases, the average particle size gradually decreases from 188 nm to 113 nm. In addition, the Zn/Al co-doping integrated with small particles can improve the high-rate performance. The optimal LiZn 0.03 Al 0.03 Mn 1.94 O 4 exhibits submicron truncated octahedral morphology, high crystallinity , and good particles dispersibility . Benefiting from these structure merits, the LiZn 0.03 Al 0.03 Mn 1.94 O 4 delivers the first discharge capacity of 113.1 mAh⋅g −1 and low capacity fade of 9.9 % after 300 cycles at 1C. It also shows the high first discharge capacity of 86.6 mAh⋅g −1 at 10C and the high capacity retention of 72.1 % after 2000 cycles. Even at ultrahigh current density of 15C and 20C, the ultralong cycling lifespans over 2000 cycles are also achieved in LiZn 0.03 Al 0.03 Mn 1.94 O 4 cathode material. The excellent electrochemical properties are ascribed to its relatively high Li + diffusion coefficient (1.60 × 10 −11 cm 2 ⋅s −1 ) and low apparent activation energy (25.45 kJ⋅mol −1 ) during the de-intercalation process. The Zn/Al dual-doping and submicron truncated octahedron designs of the LiMn 2 O 4 provide a scientific reference to prepare high-performance cathode materials.

As the promising candidates for hot section components used in gas turbines , SiC f /SiC composites suffer severe gas steam/melt corrosion, so their long-term stability depends on the surficial environmental barrier coatings . Here, we provide an alternative method to construct the protective structure by thermal diffusion . Firstly, Y-Al diffusants is diffused into the SiC substrate, forming a Y-Al diffusion layer . Then the diffusion layer can transform to a corrosion-resistant Y(Al)Si x O y layer after oxidative treatment. The compositions and morphologies of the as-received diffusion layer and the Y(Al)Si x O y layer were contrasted. Results show that a Y(Al)Si x O y protective layer, which thickens with the extension of oxidative treatment time and the increase of Y/Al ratio, can be formed on the SiC surface. Concentration gradient caused by preferential oxidation of Y-Al prompts the Y-Al diffusing towards surface. Meanwhile, the oxidation of Y-Al makes the Y(Al)Si x O y layer denser and thicker, and finally form the Y(Al)Si x O y protective layer.

The poor stability of perovskite nanomaterials exposed in high temperature, moisture, light radiation, and polar solvent conditions severely restrict their commercial application. To address this issue, the growth in situ of CsPbX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) is carried out by using the stable aluminum (Al)-based metal-organic frameworks to create CsPbX 3 @MIL-53(Al) composites. Compared with pristine CsPbX 3 NCs prepared using room temperature ligand assisted re-precipitation synthesis, the CsPbX 3 @MIL-53(Al) composites exhibit narrow photoluminescence (PL) spectra and greatly improved stability. The green emitting CsPbBr 3 @MIL-53(Al) composite exhibit narrowed PL spectrum (the full width at half-maximum of PL spectra: 20 nm for the composite and 28 nm for CsPbBr 3 NCs) and a blue-shifted PL peak wavelength (517.6 nm for the composite and 527.6 nm for the CsPbBr 3 NCs). The relationship of microstructure, components, PL, fluorescence lifetime, and stability are discussed systematically. Anomalous stability against heat-treatment, polar solvent and humidity conditions indicated the composites retained their initial PL intensity after storge more than 4 months in ambient conditions and heat-treated to 120ºC for 5 cycles. The emitting color of CsPbBr 3 @MIL-53(Al) composites are easily adjusted from blue, green to red by controlling the halide components of precursors. The composite was used to create emitting coating and highly bright flexible emitting films which also reveal high stability, suggesting that in situ encapsulation of CsPbX 3 NCs in MIL-53(Al) would supply a novel platform for various emitting devices.

ZnO is a semiconductor with a reactive surface due to the presence of oxygen vacancies, but its application in solid oxide electrochemical cells (SOCs) was limited by its low electronic conductivity. Aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO), an n -type transparent conductive oxide, is explored for the reversible SOCs. Interestingly, 2 at. % of alumina doping in zinc oxide (AZO-2) increased the electric conductivity of ZnO to 1 Scm −1 at 800 °C. The K chem (5.98 x 10 −8 cm s −1 ) of AZO-2 from electric conductivity relaxation is 91% higher than that of ZnO. AZO-2 electrode on Y 0.16 Zr 0.84 O 1.92 (8YSZ) electrolyte exhibits a polarization resistance ( R p ) of 0.73 Ω cm 2 at open-circuit voltage and 800 °C, and the reaction is limited by the surface exchange of oxygen species. The surface exchange current density of AZO-2 cathode on Y 0.16 Zr 0.84 O 1.92 is 0.0736 A cm -2 at 800 °C. AZO-2 electrode can be activated after 20 cycles of switching bias, and the R p is further decreases to 0.26 Ω cm 2 . This study confirms that AZO with an enhanced electric conductivity can be used for the oxygen electrode of a reversible SOC due to the fast surface oxygen exchange over the defective surface with couple Zn 2+ and O 2− vacancies.

Lu-Al-Si-O-N tapes with different thickness were used to join gas pressure sintered Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The microstructure of the joints and the influences of the joint thickness and joining temperature on the bonding strength of the as-joined Si 3 N 4 ceramics have been investigated. The highest bonding strength about ~ 300 MPa of the joined specimens was achieved by using 450 µm interlayer at 1450 °C. The existence of Si 3 N 4 nanowires was beneficial for the improvement of the bonding strength by interweaving the oxynitride glass matrix in the joint region.

Aluminum powder is widely used as a high-energy fuel in the domain of energetic materials, while the oxidation kinetics of Al is limited by the oxide shell on the particle surface which acts as a reaction barrier. Recently, transition metal fluorides have emerged as an intriguing type of fluorine-containing oxidizers which can improve reactivity of Al through interfacial fluorination. However, most previous research focused on micron-sized fluorides, while the reactivity of nanosized fluoride in energetic composite was rarely studied. In this work, nanosized NiF 2 (∼100 nm) was synthesized through a facile and safe approach, and it was coupled with nanosized and micron-sized Al powders to form energetic composites. Regardless of dimension of Al, Al/NiF 2 composite exhibited higher specific heat release, higher reaction efficiency, and lower reaction temperature than that of corresponding Al/NiO composite. Post-characterizations suggested that elemental Ni and AlF 3 were produced from the reaction of Al/NiF 2 composite at 710 °C, and AlF 3 was found to evaporate over 900 − 1050 °C. The long-term stability of energetic composites was evaluated through a real-time aging test for 12 months, and only slight energy degradation (<7.5 %) was founded in Al/NiF 2 composite. Concerning combustion behavior, Al/NiF 2 composite showed relatively low flame brightness but a comparable pressure generation compared to Al/NiO composite, which is presumably attributed by the endothermic evaporation of AlF 3 . A notable finding is that hybrid Al/NiF 2 /NiO composite exhibits superior pressure output, and this composite is rather explosive even for small charge amount, which shows the potential as a novel primary explosive.

Aluminum (Al) and lithium borohydride (LiBH 4 , LB for short) are highly promising candidates for chemical hydrogen storage . However, the direct utilization of Al–H 2 O reaction faces significant challenges due to the inherent issue of surface passivation , which prevents the ongoing reaction between Al and H 2 O. Additionally, the hydrolysis of LB is constrained to temperatures exceeding 0 °C, and the development of cost-effective catalysts that enable efficient hydrogen release from LB hydrolysis remains a bottleneck in realizing its practical application. Herein, we present an efficient noncatalytic hydrogen generation system utilizing Al and LB mixtures, enabling H 2 production over a broad temperature range using methanol, ethanol, or their mixtures as reaction solvents. Our results demonstrate that the H 2 generation kinetics of Al-LB composites can be precisely tailored by adjusting various parameters, such as LB content, ball-milling time, reaction temperature, and solution composition. In comparison with the traditional Al and its alloy systems , Al-LB composites exhibit remarkable performance in both hydrogen capacity and H 2 kinetics. For instance, the Al-50 % LB composite achieves a hydrogen yield of 2322 mL g −1 H 2 within 5 min (∼80 % fuel conversion). Specifically, with a 70 % LB content, the composite generates over 3100 mL g −1 H 2 within the same time, realizing nearly 90 % fuel conversion. Notably, the apparent activation energy of the Al-30 % LB and Al-50 % LB composites is determined to be 29.1 kJ mol −1 and 13.9 kJ mol −1 , much lower than that of Al-based hydrolyzable materials. These findings hold significant importance for the advancement of practical Al-based hydrogen generation systems designed for mobile or portable applications.

Modulation of burning rates and inhibition of aluminum agglomeration in solid propellants have generated considerable research interest in the field of energetic materials. In this paper, integrated Al/oxidizer composites have been prepared by a spray-drying technique, which offer intimate contact between the fuel and oxidizers . The morphologies, thermal stability, density, heats of explosion and combustion performance of the resulted solid propellants containing these Al-based composites were systematically investigated, where the condensed combustion products (CCPs) analysis and the agglomeration behavior of Al particles have been focused. After well control of the Al/oxidizers structure, 9 % higher explosion heat, 58 % higher pressurization rate and 65 % stronger flame radiation intensity were achieved in comparison to the conventional solid propellants with the same formulation. The burn rate of the propellants can also be well controlled by using different type of Al/oxidizers composites, in the range of 3.6–5.9 mm s −1 under 0.5 MPa and 9.2–10.9 mm s −1 under 15 MPa. More importantly, very low burn rate pressure exponent of 0.1 within 0.5–15 MPa was obtained. Inspired by decreasing size of CCPs, the evolution of Al on the burning surface was studied and the agglomeration inhibition was observed, whose potential mechanism was then proposed and elucidated.

Incorporating a selenium (Se) positive electrode into aluminum (Al)-ion batteries is an effective strategy for improving the overall battery performance. However, the cycling stability of Se positive electrodes has challenges due to the dissolution of intermediate reaction products. In this work, we aim to harness the advantages of Se while reducing its limitations by preparing a core–shell mesoporous carbon hollow sphere with a titanium nitride (C@TiN) host to load 63.9wt% Se as the positive electrode material for Al–Se batteries. Using the physical and chemical confinement offered by the hollow mesoporous carbon and TiN, the obtained core–shell mesoporous carbon hollow spheres coated with Se (Se@C@TiN) display superior utilization of the active material and remarkable cycling stability. As a result, Al–Se batteries equipped with the as-prepared Se@C@TiN composite positive electrodes show an initial discharge specific capacity of 377 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 1000 mA·g −1 while maintaining a discharge specific capacity of 86.0 mAh·g −1 over 200 cycles. This improved cycling performance is ascribed to the high electrical conductivity of the core–shell mesoporous carbon hollow spheres and the unique three-dimensional hierarchical architecture of Se@C@TiN.

Systematic analysis of the information content of biological external vesicles (BEVs) is essential for understanding the complex relationships between metabolic processes and cells at a systemic level. Although considerable efforts have been made to enrich BEVs, their comprehensive analysis in a way that maintains and stabilizes information maintenance at high doses remains a challenge. To address this issue, we developed a metal–organic nanoslice-coupled exocytosis phospholipid layer method that utilized subtle interactions between the metal–organic nanoslice and the phospholipid molecular layer of the membrane to achieve the convenient and efficient enrichment of BEVs. The method bypassed the conventional ultracentrifugation and size exclusion separation and helped to highly preserve the internal information on BEVs. By integrating and analyzing the enriched BEVs for elements such as membrane proteins and endotoxins, the simplicity and robustness of the metal–organic nanoslice-coupled vesicle surface phospholipid layer technology were verified, which provided a reliable platform for studying the cellular events associated with outer vesicles and expanded the biological applications of the metal–organic nanoslice.
