Synthesizing a surface-imprinted polymer based on the nanoreactor SBA-15 for optimizing the adsorption of salicylic acid from aqueous solution by response surface methodology

Haiqing Xu,Yuhang Gao,Qiantu Tao,Aiping Li,Zhanchao Liu,Yinhua Jiang,Hongwei Liu,Rongguang Yang,Yan Liu

A novel salicylic acid (SA) molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) has been synthesized successfully by a surface imprinting technique based on the SBA-15 nanoreactor. SBA-15, selected as the nanoreactor for immobilizing the monomers and template molecules, would be an option to develop a new SA imprinting strategy. The obtained imprinted materials were characterized by Fourier transmission infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The results suggested that MIP possessed an excellent ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure, which preserved the highly ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15. Experimental variables influencing the adsorption process, including the initial pH, initial concentration and temperature, were optimized by the three-level Box–Behnken experimental design with the three factors combining the response surface method (RSM) for the first time. The optimal adsorption conditions were obtained to achieve the maximum adsorption capacity of SA as follows: initial solution pH 4.62, initial SA concentration 52.38 mg L−1, and temperature 35.0 °C. Under these conditions, the experimental value of the adsorption capacity was 44.435 mg g−1, which was very close to the predicted value (43.429 mg g−1). Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm and selectivity towards SA onto MIP and non-imprinted polymer (NIP) were investigated, indicating that MIP had splendid recognizing ability and a superior specific adsorption capacity (145.19 mg g−1) compared to that of NIP (64.30 mg g−1) at 35 °C. Meanwhile, MIP was regenerated and found to be suitable for reuse in successive adsorption–desorption cycles five times without significant loss in the adsorption capacity. The results suggested that MIP could be used as an excellent adsorbent for the efficient removal of SA from aqueous solution.

Highly efficient selective oxidation of 2-methylnaphthalene to vitamin K3 over mesoporous Al/Ti-SBA-15 catalysts: The effect of acid sites and textural property

Yi Yu,Fanfan Li,Zhouxuan Zang,Li Xu,Guoji Liu

Catalytic oxidation of 2-methylnaphthalene to 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (vitamin K 3 ) is a significant pathway to produce vitamin groups K. High pollution and low-productivity of the traditional method require a greener catalyst and process. In this work, Al/Ti-SBA-15 with different n Si /n Al and n Si /n Ti ratios were hydrothermally prepared in mild acidic condition and tested in partial oxidation of 2-methylnaphthalene. Commercial zeolites NaY, β and ZSM-5 were applied to investigate the influence of mass transfer resistance and acidity on catalytic performance. Catalysts were characterized by XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, NH 3 -TPD, FTIR and Py -FTIR. We have found that the 2-methylnaphthalene conversion and vitamin K 3 selectivity depend strongly on the mesoporous structure as well as Brönsted acid concentration and strength. Irregular micropores and strong acidity will accelerate the cleavage of C = C in aromatic rings, leading to the production of phthalic anhydride. DFT calculation reveals that incorporation of aluminum in SBA-15 can reduce the energy gap, facilitating the electron transfer. And as a consequence of the substitution of Al in tetrahedral positions in SBA-15, Al-SBA-15 (10) gives the best result with 72% yield to vitamin K 3 . This catalyst markedly reduces the activation energy due to the modified activated center. Repeated experiments recommend that Al-SBA-15 is a steady and high-efficiency catalyst for the production of vitamin K 3 .

Effects of α- and γ-cyclodextrin-modified impregnation method on physicochemical properties of Ni/SBA-15 and its catalytic performance in CO2 reforming of methane

Huimin Liu,Yuming Li,Hao Wu,Jiaxiong Liu,Dehua He

Organic compounds containing multiple hydroxyl groups, namely α-cyclodextrin and γ-cyclodextrin, were used as additives for promoting Ni dispersion on supported Ni/SBA-15 catalysts. Catalysts prepared using modified and unmodified impregnation methods were characterized using N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, and thermogravimetric analysis, and their catalytic performance in the CO 2 reforming of methane (CRM) to syngas was evaluated. The results show that compared with Ni/SBA-15 prepared using a conventional impregnation method, the cyclodextrin-modified catalysts had smaller NiO particles. They also exhibited higher catalytic activity and had stronger ability to resist carbon deposition in the CRM. Mechanistic studies showed that for the unmodified catalysts, Ni 2+ could migrate into the channels of SBA-15 as a result of concentration differences, and the Ni species were sintered during the following thermal treatment processes, and could not be well dispersed. In contrast, various types of complex were formed between Ni(NO 3 ) 2 and the cyclodextrins, and this would be favorable for Ni 2+ being taken into the channels of the SBA-15. The presence of cyclodextrins was beneficial to the mutual isolation of Ni species, and finally resulted in better dispersion of Ni species.

Experimental and theoretical insights into binary Zn-SBA-15/KI catalysts for the selective coupling of CO2 and epoxides into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions

Mengshuai Liu,Kunqi Gao,Lin Liang,Jianmin Sun,Li Sheng,Masahiko Arai

The combination of a metal-modified SBA-15 catalyst with potassium iodide was developed as heterogeneous dual catalysts for chemical fixation of CO2 to cyclic carbonates. It was observed that the binary Zn-SBA-15/KI catalysts were the most efficient among various metal-modified SBA-15/KI catalysts and showed an excellent synergetic effect in promoting the reaction under mild conditions. Moreover, the effects of reaction parameters on cycloaddition of CO2 with propylene oxide (PO) to propylene carbonate (PC) were optimized. Under the optimal conditions determined, the Zn-SBA-15/KI catalytic system was also versatile in CO2 cycloaddition with other epoxides. Additionally, the mechanistic details for the fixation of CO2 into a cyclic carbonate catalyzed by SBA-15/KI and Zn-SBA-15/KI were also contrastively elucidated using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The DFT results suggested that the zinc-modified and unmodified catalysts showed different coupling modes of CO2, and the ring-opening reaction was the rate-determining step in the SBA-15/KI catalyzed cycloaddition reaction, but the zinc-modified SBA-15/KI catalysts could enhance the CO2 cycloaddition, as the formation of a stable complex was beneficial to CO2 trapping. As a result, the ring-closing reaction became the rate-determining step in the Zn-SBA-15/KI catalyzed cycloaddition reaction, which was a promising result to guide the catalyst design for CO2 conversion.

Design and fabrication of highly ordered ion imprinted SBA-15 and MCM-41 mesoporous organosilicas for efficient removal of Ni2+ from different properties of wastewaters

Rong He,Zhihong Wang,Lei Tan,Yi Zhong,Weiming Li,Da Xing,Chaohai Wei,Youwen Tang

We developed two types of novel highly ordered Ni 2+ imprinted mesoporous organosilica materials (SBA-15 (NiIMS1) and MCM-41 (NiIMS2)) through co-condensation for selective adsorption of Ni 2+ from electroplating Ni 2+ effluents. FTIR and solid-state 13 C NMR spectra demonstrated the successful embedment of functionalized iminodiacetic acid and ethanediamine chelating groups in NiIMS1 and NiIMS2, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed that Ni 2+ was coordinated by N atom and carboxyl O atom of the functional groups. Furthermore, NiIMS1 and NiIMS2 displayed highly ordered periodic hexagonal P6mm meso-structure, large surface area, and highly specific recognition ability toward Ni 2+ . The adsorption experimental results proved that NiIMS1 was suitable for acidic wastewater treatment , whereas NiIMS2 was fit for alkaline wastewater. The saturated adsorption capacity of NiIMS2 was 20.8 mg/g at pH 6.0, and that of NiIMS1 reached up to 22.9 mg/g at pH 3.0. The values of selectivity coefficients of NiIMS1 and NiIMS2 for five competing metal ions ranged from 46.4 to 12.4 and 36.9 to 18.8, respectively. The adsorption efficiency of NiIMS1 was above 92.5% even after seven extraction-stripping cycles, while that for NiIMS2 was 90.9%. The real sample adsorption experiments demonstrated that these mesoporous organosilica materials have high potential for water treatment applications.

In-situ functional modification of the inner and outer surfaces of mesoporous silica SBA-15 towards improving fire safety and thermal stability of epoxy resins

Shuyang Shi,Shuxian Zheng,Kun Zeng,Liang Yue,Xianlai Zhang,Wenhui Rao,Chuanbai Yu

The inflammability of epoxy resins (EPs) severely limits their safe and reliable application. The design and application of flame retardants has enormous potential for increasing the fire safety of EP composites. In the present study, a novel organic-inorganic nanohybrid material (VDSZ), consisting of mesoporous silica (SBA-15), P/N/Si-containing compound and the transition metal (Zn), was constructed by in-situ functional modification of the inner and outer surfaces of SBA-15. That is, Zn was in-situ modified on the inner pore surface of SBA-15, and phosphorus-containing compound was in-situ grafting onto outer surface of SBA-15 by Schiff base reaction. The results showed that EP/VDSZ-3 composite had a significant improvement in flame-retardant properties. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) for EP/VDSZ-3 increased from 24.5 % (EP) to 30.8 %, resulting in a UL-94 V-0 rating. Furthermore, the findings of the cone calorimeter test (CCT) demonstrated that, in comparison with pure EP, the peak heat release rate, total smoke generation and smoke production release of EP/VDSZ-3 decreased by 29.16 %, 25.95 %, and 30.90 % respectively. Moreover, the impact strength of EP/VDSZ-1 was 40 % higher than that of pure EP. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of EP composites improved dramatically as the VDSZ increased. This study found that creating a multi-level structure provided a fresh idea for simultaneously boosting polymer flame retardancy, smoke suppression and thermal stability, which will be applied to building materials with flame retardant requirements.

Largely Enhancing Luminous Efficacy, Color-Conversion Efficiency, and Stability for Quantum-Dot White LEDs Using the Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Pore Structure of SBA-15 Mesoporous Particles

Jiasheng Li,Yong Tang,Zongtao Li,Xinrui Ding,Binhai Yu,Liwei Lin

Quantum-dot (QD) white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are promising for illumination and display applications due to their excellent color quality. Although they have a high quantum yield close to unity, the reabsorption of QD light leads to high conversion loss, significantly reducing the luminous efficacy and stability of QD white LEDs. In this report, SBA-15 mesoporous particles (MPs) with two-dimensional hexagonal pore structures (2D-HPS) are utilized to largely enhance the luminous efficacy and color-conversion efficiency of QD white LEDs in excess of 50%. The reduction in conversion loss also helps QD white LEDs to achieve a lifetime 1.9 times longer than that of LEDs using QD-only composites at harsh aging conditions. Simulation and testing results suggest that the waveguide effect of 2D-HPS helps in reducing the reabsorption loss by constraining the QD light inside the wall of 2D-HPS, decreasing the probability of being captured by QDs inside the hole of 2D-HPS. As such, materials and mechanisms like SBA-15 MPs with 2D-HPS could provide a new path to improve the photon management of QD light, comprehensively enhancing the performances of QD white LEDs.

Highly selective extraction of uranium from wastewater using amine-bridged diacetamide-functionalized silica

Fan Zhang,Yi Liu,Kai-Qiang Ma,Heng Yan,Yue Luo,Feng-Cheng Wu,Chu-Ting Yang,Sheng Hu,Shu-Ming Peng

A major environmental concern related to nuclear energy is wastewater contaminated with uranium, thus necessitating the development of pollutant-reducing materials with efficiency and effectiveness. Herein, highly selective mesoporous silicas functionalized with amine-bridged diacetamide ligands SBA-15-ABDMA were prepared. Different spectroscopy techniques were used to probe the chemical environment and reactivity of the chelating ligands before and after sorption . The results showed that the functionalized SBA-15-ABDMA had a strong affinity for uranium at low pH (pH = 3) with desirable sorption capacity (68.82 mg/g) and good reusability (> 5). It showed excellent separation performance with a high distribution coefficient ( K d,U > 10 5 mL/g) and separation factors SF U/Ln > 1000 at a pH of 3.5 in the presence of lanthanide nuclides, alkaline earth metal and transition metal ions . In particular, SiO 2 spheres-ABDMA was used as a column material, which achieved excellent recovery of U(VI) (> 98%) and good reusability for samples of simulated mining and nuclear industries wastewater. XPS and crystallography studies clearly illustrated the tridentate coordination mode of U(VI)/PEABDMA and the mechanism and origin behind the high selectivity for U.

Inclusion of the poorly water-soluble drug simvastatin in mesocellular foam nanoparticles: Drug loading and release properties

Yanzhuo Zhang,Jinghai Zhang,Tongying Jiang,Siling Wang

The purpose of this study was to develop spherical mesocellular foam (MCF) loaded with a poorly water-soluble drug, intended to be orally administered, able to improve the dissolution rate and enhance the drug loading capacity. Spherical MCF with a continuous 3-D pore system was synthesized using Pluronic 123 triblock polymer (P123) as a surfactant coupled with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a co-surfactant. A model drug, simvastatin (SV), was loaded onto spherical MCF via a procedure involving a combination of adsorption equilibrium and solvent evaporation . The drug release rate and the drug loading efficiency of spherical MCF were compared with those of fibrous SBA-15. Investigations using nitrogen adsorption , scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and HPLC demonstrated the successful incorporation of SV into the MCF host. It was found that spherical MCF has a high drug loading efficiency up to 37.5%, and higher than that of fibrous SBA-15 with a pore diameter of 6.5   nm. It is worth noting that fast release rate of SV was obtained from spherical MCF compared with SBA-15 and pure crystalline SV using enzyme-free simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 6.8).

Leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat-containing protein (LRPPRC)-stabilized lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 15 (Snhg15) modulates hematopoietic injury induced by γ-ray irradiation via m6A modification

Zhang Shuqin,Cheng Yajia,Gao Yujia,Xu Feifei,Wang Yuna,Zhang Junling,Shang Yue,Li Deguan,Fan Saijun

With advancements in radiotherapy technologies, the detrimental effects of ionizing radiation on biological systems, particularly the hematopoietic system, have caused significant concern. N 6 -methyladenosine (m 6 A), the most pervasive representative of post-transcriptional modifications, plays critical roles in diverse biological events. Non-coding RNA comprises the vast majority of the human genome. This study aimed to explore the role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) m 6 A modification in γ-ray irradiation-induced hematopoietic injury. By using mouse models, it was found that γ-radiation rapidly damaged hematopoietic bone marrow cells (BMCs), triggering apoptosis, oxidative stress and DNA damage, along with up-regulation of m 6 A Reader proteins. We revealed the time-conditioned landscape of lncRNA m 6 A methylome of BMCs in the short term after radiation and found that a dynamic “change-then-recover” trend involved. LncRNA Snhg15 was identified as a key regulator through integration analysis of the methylome and transcriptome data. Its m 6 A modification was closely related to progression of radiation injury in BMCs. Further research demonstrated that the novel m 6 A Reader LRPPRC could interact with the modification site of Snhg15 , stabilize Snhg15 and promote its expression, thereby exacerbating radiation-induced injury to BMCs both in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of Lrpprc or Snhg15 could alleviate the radiation injury to the hematopoietic system. Additionally, the LRPPRC- Snhg15 axis was involved in the radio-protective efficacy of gut microbiota-derived valeric acid. These findings uncover a novel mechanism by which m 6 A-modified lncRNA Snhg15 is stabilized by LRPPRC modulates γ-irradiation-induced hematopoietic injury, providing potential therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of radiation injuries.

Simultaneous determination of 15 pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides in weeds, soil, fresh tea leaves, and tea: Exploring the pollution source of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in tea

Weiting Jiao,Lei Zhu,Tingting Shen,Luyao Wang,Qing X. Li,Chen Wang,Xiangwei Wu,Hongping Chen,Rimao Hua

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their N -oxides (PANOs) are novel contaminants in tea. However, the source of PA/PANO contamination in tea remains unclear. In this study, 15 PAs/PANOs were extracted from plant samples (tea, fresh tea leaves, and weeds) with 0.1 M sulfuric acid and from soil with 0.1 M sulfuric acid methanol after adjusting soil acidity with 0.1 M trisodium citrate. Satisfactory recoveries of PAs/PANOs from four different matrices at 0.02, 0.1, and 0.5 mg kg −1 was 72%–114% with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 0.03%–16%. Seven out of 15 PAs/PANOs were detected in tea purchased from the local market ranging from undetected to 96.2 μg kg −1 . Thirteen, three, and four PAs/PANOs were detected in weeds, fresh tea leaves, and soil, respectively. Based on the types of PAs/PANOs detected in the three matrices, it was preliminarily speculated that PAs/PANOs in tea originated from weeds in the tea garden.

High-efficient generation of natural killer cells from peripheral blood with preferable cell vitality and enhanced cytotoxicity by combination of IL-2, IL-15 and IL-18

Min Liu,Yuan Meng,Leisheng Zhang,Zhongchao Han,Xiaoming Feng

Natural killer (NK) cells are pivotal effector lymphocytes characterized for the innate immune response to pathogenic microorganism and tumor cells without priming and sensitization. Despite emerging knowledge has highlighted the rosy prospects in tumor immunosurveillance , yet the large-scale clinical application of NK cell-based therapy is hindered largely attributes to the defects in generating sufficient and high-quality cellular products. Herein, on the basis of 16 kinds of candidate combinations, we investigated the feasibility of cytokine cocktail-based strategy for convenient and standardized NK cell cultivation as well as the multifaceted characteristics and cytotoxicity against tumor cells. Our results revealed that joint utilization of Interleukin (IL)-2, IL-15, IL-18 manifested the optimal facilitation upon the ex vivo expansion and proportion of NK cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Meanwhile, the obtained NK cell population expressed high levels of activating molecules (CD16 and NKG2D) and exhibited splendid cytotoxicity against K562 cell line. Collectively, with the aid of cytokine-based programming, we established an alternative strategy for facilitating the large-scale persistence and activation of NK cells from peripheral blood, which would benefit the NK cell- and chimeric antigen receptor-modified NK (CAR-NK) cell-based autologous or allogeneic tumor immunotherapy.
