Heterogeneous Ni-Boride/Phosphide Anchored Amorphous B-C Layer for Overall Water Electrocatalysis

Shiwei Song,Yanhui Wang,Yucan Liu,Pengfei Tian,Jianbing Zang

Graphical The Ni-boride/phosphide particles anchored amorphous B-doped carbon layer with hierarchical porous characteristics in Ni foam (Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF) was constructed for overall water splitting. Benefitting from the synergistic effect between Ni 3 P and Ni 3 B, the amorphous B−C layer and high space utilization of NF, the Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF electrocatalyst exhibited a desirable activity and durability for water electrolysis. The rational design of efficient and economical bifunctional electrocatalysts remained a challenge for overall water electrolysis. In this work, the Ni-boride/ phosphide particles anchored amorphous B-doped carbon layer with hierarchical porous characteristics in Ni foam (Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF) was fabricated for overall water splitting. The Boroncarbide (B 4 C) power was filled and fixed in the NF interspace through the electroplating and electroless plating, and then annealed in vacuum high temperature. The amorphous B−C layer derived from the B4 C not only speeded up the electron transport, but also cooperate with Ni-boride/phosphide to enhance the electrocatalytic activity for HER and OER synergistically. Furthermore, the hierarchical porous architecture of Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF increased space utilization to load more active materials. The self-supported Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF electrode possessed a low overpotential of 212 and 280 mV to deliver 100 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively, and high stability for 48 h. In particular, the electrolyzer constituted with the Ni 3 P/Ni 3 B/B−C/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst only required a voltage of 1.59 V at 50 mA cm −2 for water electrocatalysis under alkaline medium, and demonstrated long-term stability for 48 h. This study provides a new technical path for the development of bifunctional of transition metal borides to promote the application of hydrogen production from water splitting.

Highly b-oriented MFI mixed matrix membrane prepared by detaching twins and junctions

Pingping Li,Ming Zhang,Yubin Hu,Lei Han,Gang Lou,Pengyuan Wu,Oleksiy Penkov,Junjie Zhao,Kemal Celebi

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with aligned microporous sheets offer enhanced molecular transport. Platelike MFI zeolite crystals can form such MMMs with aligned micropores. However, platelike MFI synthesis suffers from twinning and crystal junctions. Here, we present a method to minimize and preferentially detach these twins and junctions to obtain standalone platelike MFI crystals with high aspect ratios (ca. 4.3 μm by 120 nm). These platelike crystals can be synthesized in kilogram scale and do not aggregate after calcination, exhibiting ∼100 % dispersion yield, in contrast to the ultrathin nanosheets, which lose ∼90 % to aggregation. Twins and crystal junctions are eliminated using a preferential detaching strategy by selectively etching the twin boundaries and junctions. Discrete crystals are aligned in a 2.8 μm thick Pebax matrix to prepare highly b -oriented MFI MMMs with 30 % MFI loading, exhibiting CO 2 permeances up to 37 GPU, and CO 2 /N 2 separation factors up to 16.8 at ambient pressure.

Multispectral bioactivity studies of N-terminal fatty acid modified antimicrobial peptide Andricin B

Libo Yuan,Ke Wang,Lei Lei,Dongxin Zhao,Hongyan Yang,Yuan Fang,Kui Lu

A series of Andricin B derivatives were designed and synthesized using fatty acid modification at N-terminus of the antimicrobial peptides. The hydrophobicity of Andricin B was altered through fatty acid modification, and the bioactivity was investigated. The interaction between Andricin B and its derivatives with DNA was measured using multi-spectroscopy. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that Andricin B and its derivatives can interact with ct-DNA and G-quadruplexes DNA, and the interaction related with the length of fatty acid chain. Antimicrobial activity tests showed a significant increase using peptides with 8–10 carbons fatty acid chain. C10-Andricin B exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity, with up to a 16-fold enhancement compared to the original peptide Andricin B. Meanwhile, the protease hydrolysis stability test showed that fatty acid modification improved the stability of Andricin B against protease. Scanning electron microscopy results distinctly showed that C8-Andricin B could rupture the cell wall of bacteria. All results indicated that fatty acid modification peptides are an effective strategy for enhancing activity and stability of antimicrobial peptides. This research provides valuable insights for further research on antimicrobial peptides.

Amphotericin B-conjugated polypeptide hydrogels as a novel innovative strategy for fungal infections

Chang Shu,Tengfei Li,Wen Yang,Duo Li,Shunli Ji,Li Ding

The present work is focused on the design and development of novel amphotericin B (AmB)-conjugated biocompatible and biodegradable polypeptide hydrogels to improve the antifungal activity. Using three kinds of promoting self-assembly groups (2-naphthalene acetic acid (Nap), naproxen (Npx) and dexamethasone (Dex)) and polypeptide sequence (Phe-Phe-Asp-Lys-Tyr, FFDKY), we successfully synthesized the Nap-FFDK(AmB)Y gels, Npx-FFDK(AmB)Y gels and Dex-FFDK(AmB)Y gels. The AmB-conjugated hydrogelators are highly soluble in different aqueous solutions. The cryo-transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy micrographs of hydrogels afford nanofibres with a width of 20–50 nm. Powder X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrate that the crystalline structures of the AmB and Dex are changed into amorphous structures after the formation of hydrogels. Circular dichroism spectra of the solution of blank carriers and the corresponding drug deliveries further help elucidate the molecular arrangement in gel phase, indicating the existence of turn features. The in vitro drug releases suggest that the AmB-conjugated hydrogels are suitable as drug-controlled release vehicles for hydrophobic drugs. The antifungal effect of AmB-conjugated hydrogels significantly exhibits the antifungal activity against Candida albicans. The results of the present study indicated that the AmB-conjugated hydrogels are suitable carriers for poorly water soluble drugs and for enhancement of therapeutic efficacy of antifungal drugs.

Catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B through peroxymonosulfate activation by the Co-doped hydroxyapatite

Lei Wang,Yang Ruan,Zenghui Diao,Diyun Chen,Lingjun Kong

Supported Co-based catalysts have shown attractive prospects for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this work, Co-doped hydroxyapatite (H-Co/HAP) composites were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The Co content in H-Co/HAP could reach 71.2 mg/g, while the Co leaching rate remained relatively low. By right of the excellent catalytic performance, the as-prepared H-Co/HAP could achieve 99.02% degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 10 min in the presence of 0.5 mM PMS and a first-order kinetic rate constant of 0.876 min −1 . Even after 8 cycles, the RhB degradation efficiency remained at 81.96%. In addition, the effects of vital reaction parameters, including catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, initial pH, humic acid, and coexisting anions, on the catalytic performance in the H-Co/HAP10/PMS system were systematically investigated and discussed. The degradation mechanism of a non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) as the dominant active specie and a radical (•O 2 − and SO 4 •− ) as the minor active specie was identified through quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance testing. Moreover, possible degradation pathways of RhB were proposed in the H-Co/HAP10/PMS system. Overall, this study offers a meaningful strategy for designing high-content Co-based catalysts to degrade dye molecules in wastewater.

(B, N)-codoped carbon dots for sensitive luteolin detection and HepG2 cell imaging

Yongqiang Wang,Xingyu Hou,Yali Li,Xue Sun,Rui Hu,Yuguang Lv,Rui Jia,Lixin Ding

Luteolin (3′,4′,5,7-tetrahydroxyflavone, LTL) is a kind of hydrophobic flavonoid, which has a number of pharmacological actions. It has a number of pharmacological actions, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antihepatic fibrosis properties. High-dose LTL, on the other hand, can cause oxidative DNA damage and hydroxyl radical generation. It is critical to create easy, sensitive, and dependable LTL detection technologies and delivery methods for LTL quality control, clinical drug monitoring and enhancing drug bioavailability. In this work, a novel phenylboronic acid derived quantum dots (P-QDs) were synthesized for LTL sensitive detection and pH-responsive delivery. It showed remarkable selectivity and a brilliant fluorescence with a quantum yield of 43.62 %. In vitro experiments reveal negligible cytotoxicity. P-QDs and LTL coupling (P-QDs/LTL) showed powerful proliferation inhibition and migration restriction effects on HepG2 cells. In addition, P-QDs/LTL could time-dependently release it to restore fluorescence in the microacidic environment of HepG2 cells, thus demonstrating satisfactory fluorescence imaging capability. This strategy demonstrated a favourable linear relationship between LTL concentration and the fluorescence intensity of P-QDs in the range of 0.02–200 μM ( R 2  = 0.9952), with a detection limit of 1.16 nM (S/N=3). The recoveries in different real samples were in the range of 85.23 %-108.04 % with RSDs ≤6.1 %. The material is both a new attempt at LTL detection methodology and has significant promise for providing pH-responsive intracellular release of drug monitoring and cancer therapies from naked QDs without the requirement for sophisticated modified grafting.

Allulose mitigates chronic enteritis by reducing mitochondria dysfunction via regulating cathepsin B production

Fang Shi,Yong-Sheng Gao,Shu-Mei Han,Cheng-Suo Huang,Qing-Sheng Hou,Xiao-wen Wen,Ben-Shi Wang,Zhen-Yu Zhu,Lei Zou

Metabolic changes have been linked to the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes colitis. Allulose, an endogenous bioactive monosaccharide, is vital to the synthesis of numerous compounds and metabolic processes within living organisms. Nevertheless, the precise biochemical mechanism by which allulose inhibits colitis remains unknown. Allulose is an essential and intrinsic protector of the intestinal mucosal barrier, as it maintains the integrity of tight junctions in the intestines, according to the current research. It is also important to know that there is a link between the severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC), chemically-induced colitis in rodents, and lower levels of allulose in the blood. Mice with colitis, either caused by dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) or naturally occurring colitis in IL-10 -/- mice, had less damage to their intestinal mucosa after being given allulose. Giving allulose to a colitis model starts a chain of reactions because it stops cathepsin B from ejecting and helps lysosomes stick together. This system effectively stops the activity of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) when intestinal epithelial damage happens. This stops the breakdown of tight junction integrity and the start of mitochondrial dysfunction. To summarise, the study's findings have presented data that supports the advantageous impact of allulose in reducing the advancement of colitis. Its ability to stop the disruption of the intestinal barrier enables this. Therefore, allulose has potential as a medicinal supplement for treating colitis.

A bioinspired supramolecular nanoprodrug for precision therapy of B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Zhang Qixiong,Tian Yuhan,Yang Yanrui,Huang Qiuying,Feng Haibo,Zeng Rui,Li Shanshan

Fludarabine (FA) is still considered as a first-line chemotherapy drug for hematological tumors related to B lymphocytes. However, it is worth noting that the non-specific distribution and non-different cytotoxicity of FA may lead to irreversible consequences such as central nervous system damage such as blindness, coma, and even death. Therefore, it is very important to develop a system to targeting delivery FA. In preliminary studies, it was found that B lymphoma cells would specific highly expressing the sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 2 (known as CD22). Inspired by the specific recognition of sialic acid residues and CD22, we have developed a supramolecular prodrug based on polysialic acid, an endogenous biomacromolecule, achieving targeted-therapy of B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (B-NHL). Specifically, the prepared hydrophobic reactive oxygen species-responsive FA dimeric prodrug (F2A) interacts with the TPSA, which polysialic acid were modified by the thymidine derivatives, through non-covalent intermolecular interactions similar to “Watson–Crick” base pairing, resulting in the formation of nanoscale supramolecular prodrug (F@TPSA). Cell experiments have confirmed that F@TPSA can be endocytosed by CD22+ B lymphoma cells including Raji and Ramos cells, and there is a significant difference of endocytosis in other leukocytes. Furthermore, in B-NHL mouse model, compared with FA, F@TPSA is determined to have a stronger tumor targeting and inhibitory effect. More importantly, the distribution of F@TPSA in vivo tends to be enriched in lymphoma tissue rather than nonspecific, thus reducing the leukopenia of FA. The targeted delivery system based on PSA provides a new prodrug modification strategy for targeted treatment of B-NHL.Graphical abstract

The synthesis and protein resistance of amphiphilic PDMS-b-(PDMS-g-cysteine) copolymers

Yufeng Lei,Yaling Lin,Anqiang Zhang

Zwitterionic polymers have been used to cope with nonspecific protein adsorption and bio-fouling problems for a wide range of materials, including biomedical devices, marine coatings and membrane separation. However, direct surface modification with highly water-soluble zwitterionic polymers is rather difficult due to their poor attachment to hydrophobic solid surfaces. In this work, we utilize the hydrophobic interaction to anchor zwitterionic polysiloxanes grafted with cysteine onto surfaces by adding an hydrophobic block of polydimethylsiloxanes, referred as PDMS- b -(PDMS- g -Cys)s. The synthesis involves only three steps of reactions, and the structures of each product were characterized using GPC, FT-IR and 1 H NMR. The adsorption and protein resistance of PDMS- b -(PDMS- g -Cys)s on a gold surface are investigated with QCM-D. The results show that the hydrophobic interaction moieties of the additional PDMS blocks help the hydrophilic cysteine-grafted blocks stably attach and then function on the sensor. These findings suggest that the addition of hydrophobic moieties provides an effective approach to construct anti-fouling interfaces with zwitterionic polymers in aqueous solution.

Preparation of Co/Cr-MOFs for efficient removal of fleroxacin and Rhodamine B

Fuhua Wei,Yan Wang,Qinhui Ren,Qin Zhang,Hongliang Chen,Zhao Liang

Cr/Co-MOFs were synthesized via a solvothermal method using chromium acetate and cobalt chloride hexahydrate as metal ions, and trimeric acid as the organic ligand. The structures of Cr/Co-MOFs were characterized using Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. These Cr/Co-MOFs were used for removing organic contaminants in wastewater treatment. Fleroxacin and Rhodamine B (RhB) were specifically selected as target molecules in this study to evaluate the removal efficiency based on the mass of Co/Cr-MOFs, concentrations of organic contaminants, and adsorption time. Experimental findings indicated that at a Co/Cr-MOFs dosage of 100 mg, with initial concentrations of Fleroxacin (30 ppm) and RhB (20 ppm), removal efficiencies achieved were 95% and 99%, respectively. Within a timeframe of 5 h, Co/Cr-MOFs attained adsorption capacities amounting to 269.6 mg·g −1 for fleroxacin and 289.5 mg·g −1 for RhB. The interaction between Co/Cr-MOFs and fleroxacin, as well as RhB, is primarily attributed to factors such as pore size, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic charge, and π–π interactions. Moreover, theoretical analysis corroborated these experimental results by demonstrating conformity between the adsorption process and both second-order kinetic model equations alongside Langmuir isotherm model equations. Collectively, the experimental data combined with theoretical investigations underscore the practical significance associated with employing Co/Cr-MOFs for effective eradication of organic pollutants.

Synergistic improvement of pH-universal hydrogen evolution through B, N dual-doped Mo2C

Shuaipeng Wang,Shengli Zhu,Zhenduo Cui,Zhaoyang Li,Shuilin Wu,Wence Xu,Zhonghui Gao,Yanqin Liang,Hui Jiang

The quest for a cost-effective, high-performance catalyst for hydrogen production from electrolyzed water across a broad pH range holds immense importance. B, N co-doped Mo2C was first synthesized via microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) for efficient hydrogen production from electrolyzed water. The B, N-Mo2C catalyst demonstrates a requirement of 81 mV in 1.0 M KOH to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that B, N co-doping optimizes the charge transfer between H* and Mo2C, diminishes the excessive hydrogen binding energy of Mo2C, and supports effective and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) conduction in diverse settings. This doping strategy offers a systematic design approach for designing highly active noble-metal-free HER catalysts.

High-Performance and Stable b-PBD/Perovskite Liquid Scintillators for X-ray Imaging

Yumeng Wang,Beiping Liu,Yingming Liu,Xi Chen,Xi Chen,Quan Wen,Eyu Wang,Bi Du,Han Zheng,Guo-Hua Zhong,Chunlei Yang,Ming Chen

Perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are emerging as promising scintillator materials owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and substantial X-ray absorption coefficient, among other superior properties. Nevertheless, their solid-state films encounter challenges such as limited environmental stability and nonuniform deposition over large areas. In contrast, liquid scintillators present advantages including superior radiation hardness, environmental stability, morphological flexibility, and cost-effective scalability, positioning them as a viable alternative. However, a significant limitation remains: PNCs demonstrate markedly reduced scintillation efficiency in solution. To address this issue, we propose an organic–inorganic hybridization strategy. The surface hybridization of metal halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X: Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) with the organic molecule b-PBD results in a new generation of efficient and low-cost liquid scintillators. This hybrid system substantially enhances the X-ray radioluminescence quantum yield, achieving a light yield that represents an 18.59-fold increase over that of pristine CsPbBr3 solutions. The composite exhibited remarkable stability, retaining high luminescence intensity after high-dose X-ray irradiation and maintaining robust fluorescence intensity with stable emission peaks following prolonged ambient exposure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density-functional theory (DFT) analyses confirmed N–Pb bond formation, revealing an enhancement mechanism driven by X-ray-induced directional electron transfer from the organic molecule to PNCs. We have further demonstrated a CsPbBr3/b-PBD liquid X-ray imager showing a high spatial resolution of 4.9 lp/mm. This strategy demonstrates universal enhancement across CsPbX3 variants and lead-based PNCs (e.g., Mn: CsPbCl3, Ni: CsPbBr3), facilitating low-dose radiation detection for fundamental science and diverse imaging applications.
