CO 2 electrochemical reduction (CO 2 ER) can convert CO 2 into value-added liquid fuel, which can not only mitigate the global warming problem caused by CO 2 , but also can be used for energy storage in the form of intermittent renewable energy. High-performance catalysts are required in order to efficiently conduct electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction under mild conditions. In this work, the bimetallic bismuth and tin were deposited on the copper mesh via a simple and speedy electrodeposition strategy and assessed as electrocatalysts for the conversion of CO 2 to formate. The Bi 5 Sn 60 electrode (bismuth deposition time of 5 min, tin deposition time of 60 min) exhibited an excellent catalytic activity with a remarkably high Faradaic efficiency of 94.8% and partial current density of 34.0 mA cm −2 at − 1.0 V vs RHE. More intriguingly, it exhibited a remarkable formate production rate of 634.3 μmol cm −2 h −1 that outperformed most of the reported electrocatalysts. The pine needle-shaped dendritic structures could provide a considerable surface area and massive active sites. The fast electron transfer was of great benefit to the formation of CO 2 • − intermediate. The metal oxide/metal metastable interface was conducive to stabilizing the CO 2 • − intermediate and inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process. Moreover, the optimized electronic structure strengthened the pathway related to the OCHO • intermediate, thereby boosted the conversion of CO 2 to formate. The results demonstrated that the dendrite structured Bi/Sn bimetallic catalysts would be a promising candidate for high-efficiency CO 2 reduction.

Present polymer inhibitors depend on a major inhibitory group to restrain bentonite hydration, and monomer design is concerned to improve the inhibition and stability through complex copolymerization. Conveniently, a homopolymer (PIL-NH 2 ) that contained primary amine and cationic imidazolium as bi-functional groups was proposed, aiming to provide two synergistic inhibitory modes. Comprehensive methods were conducted to characterize the chemical structure and inhibitory performance of PIL-NH 2 . The ζ potential absolute value of bentonite suspension was decreased by PIL-NH 2 from 28.7–33.3 mV to 4–7 mV, and the increment of bentonite particle size d 50 was observable from 1.83892 μm to over 200 μm. With water squeezed out, the lattice spacing d 001 of hydrated bentonite was reduced from 1.9070 to 1.2683 nm due to PIL-NH 2 intercalation. The ESEM images revealed that inhibited bentonite showed a tight structure with classical dehydration phenomenon, and the hydrogen bond between PIL-NH 2 and bentonite was further confirmed according to the FT-IR result. In mechanism analysis, the electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bond existed simultaneously for PIL-NH 2 to adsorb bentonite. The two adsorption modes from bi-functional groups were synergistic to improve inhibition remarkably. PIL-NH 2 maintained high performance during the whole hydration process, including crystalline hydration, osmotic hydration, and hydrated dispersion.

Graphical Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction : Benefiting from the synergistic effect of local high electron density at active sites and thermodynamic bicarbonate assistance, the hierarchical Bi@Bi 2 MoO 6 composite simultaneously shows good photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity and high ethanol selectivity (92 %). Furthermore, bicarbonate ions play an important role in the formation of long-chain products due to the C−C coupling between derivative carbene intermediates and other carbon-containing intermediates. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is a sustainable and inexpensive method to solve the energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. However, the major stumbling blocks such as poor product selectivity, low yield of the multi-carbon products, and serious recombination of electron-hole pairs hinder practical application of photocatalysts. Herein, a high-performance Bi@Bi 2 MoO 6 photocatalyst, Bi nanoparticles grown on the surface of Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies, was fabricated via a simple solvothermal approach. Benefiting from the abundant active sites and effective separation of photogenerated carriers of Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets, and the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi nanoparticles, the Bi@Bi 2 MoO 6 sample exhibited great photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity. Furthermore, adding NaHCO 3 into the system not only significantly increased the C 2 H 5 OH generation rate but also enhanced the product selectivity. In the photocatalytic measurement (0.17 mol L −1 CO 2 -saturated NaHCO 3 solution), the highest formation rates of CO, CH 3 OH, and C 2 H 5 OH were reached at 0.85, 0.59, and 17.93 μmol g −1 h −1 (≈92 % selectivity), respectively.

The toxicity and instability of lead halide perovskite seriously limit its commercial application in lighting, although it has high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and adjustable emission. Here, lead-free bismuth (Bi) and antimony (Sb) codoped Cs2SnCl6 (BSCSC) microcrystals (MCs) are prepared successfully by a solvothermal method. The PL spectrum is composed of dual emission bands with the peak at 485 and 650 nm, of which relative intensity can be tunable through the change of Bi and Sb feeding contents, respectively. Because of the phonon–electron interaction, the PL intensity is enhanced as the temperature rises within the range of 80–260 K. Then, the nonradiative transition is intensified until 380 K, which results in decrease in PL intensity. Simultaneously, combining with time-resolved PL, it is concluded that the emission peak at 485 nm is attributed to the [BiSn+VCl] as the luminescent centers with the lifetime of hundreds of nanoseconds, and the emission peak at 650 nm is attributed to microsecond-timescale self-trapped excitons. The maximum values of relative sensitivity (SR) and absolute sensitivity (SA) values obtained are 3.82% K−1 and 5.11 ns ·K−1, which for the first time to our knowledge demonstrate that BSCSC MCs can be novel luminescent materials for developing better optical thermometry. White-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are constructed using BSCSC MCs only combined with an LED chip, the Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage color coordinates of which are (0.30, 0.37). It provides a novel scheme for the lighting field to realize WLEDs without adding additional commercial phosphors.

The Pb-free hybrid-layered-double perovskites (HLDPs) have been proposed as green and stable semiconducting materials for optoelectronic devices, but the synthesized members are still limited. Here, we report the synthesis of three new HLDPs, (C8H20N2)2AgMBr8 (M = In, Sb, and Bi), by a solution method using 1,4-bis(ammoniomethyl)cyclohexane (C8H20N22+) as the organic spacing cation. All three of these HLDPs show ⟨100⟩-oriented layered structures with Ag and In/Sb/Bi order arranged in corner-sharing octahedral layers. The first-principle calculations indicate the indirect-gap nature of (C8H20N2)2AgInBr8 and (C8H20N2)2AgSbBr8, while their Bi counterpart shows a direct band gap after considering spin–orbit coupling. The band gaps obtained by diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy are 3.11, 2.60, and 2.70 eV for M = In, Sb, and Bi, respectively. (C8H20N2)2AgInBr8 shows a broadband red emission centered at 690 nm, and it is mainly attributed to the self-trapped-excitons mechanism. Our results not only provide a series of new “Pb-free” HLDPs with chemical diversity but also help us to further understand the structure–property relationships of HLDP materials.

The complexation of IrCl 3 ⋅3H 2 O with the electron-deficient phosphines ( L1 - L6 ) respectively afforded a bi-functional catalyst possessing the dual functions of transition metal complex (Ir III -P) and Ir III -Lewis acid for tandem hydroformylation-acetalization of olefins. The best result was obtained over L5 -based IrCl 3 ⋅3H 2 O catalytic system which corresponded to 97% conversion of 1-hexene along with 92% selectivity to the target acetals free of any additive. The crystal structure of the novel Ir III -complex of Ir III -L4 indicated that the electron-deficient nature of the involved phosphine warranted Ir-center in +3 valence state without reduction, which served as the Lewis acid catalyst for the subsequent acetalization of the aldehydes as well. Moreover, as an ionic phosphine, L6 -based IrCl 3 ⋅3H 2 O system immobilized in RTIL of [Bmim]PF 6 could be recycled for 6 runs without the obvious activity loss or metal leaching.

Inspired by the mechanism of bone formation, a porous collagen-carboxymethyl cellulose/hydroxyapatite (Col-CMC/HA) composite was designed and fabricated using a biomimetic template of Col and CMC protein-polysaccharide bi-molecules. The morphology, composition and physical properties of Col-CMC/HA composites were characterized systematically. It was found that the nano-HA homogenously distributed on the surface of Col-CMC bi-templates while the composite presented 3D porous structure with pore size from 100 μm to 300 μm. The porosities of composites were located at the range of 71%–85%. Besides, the compressive strength of composites was highly depended on the ratio of Col to CMC in the organic template. The optimized composite in respect to physical properties showed a compressive strength as high as 7.06 MPa, quite close to that of natural bone. The high relative growth rate of wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblasts cells was found for the composite, indicating a good biocompatibility. The organic-inorganic composite also behaved good in collagenase resistance and could be biodegraded in 8 weeks, with about 50% of initial weight left at the ratio of Col to CMC of 1:9. The results demonstrated that the Col-CMC/HA composite by bi-molecular template method was a rational and safe method to prepare biomaterials with tunable properties.

Soda lime tempered glass was successfully joined by a Bi-B-Zn lead-free low-melting glass with a composition of 35Bi 2 O 3 -50H 3 BO 3 -15ZnO (mol%). The Bi-B-Zn glass exhibited a glass transition temperature (T g ), softening point (T d ) and crystallization temperature (T c ) of 346 ℃, 364 ℃and 448 ℃ respectively. The wettability of the glass on tempered glass substrate was investigated, and a contact angle of less than 13.94° was obtained when the temperature was raised to above 470 ℃ in open atmosphere. The microstructural evolution, interfacial bonding mechanism and mechanical properties of the joint at different joining temperatures were investigated. The diffusion bonding between Bi-B-Zn glass solder and tempered glass was achieved. The crystals of Bi 4 B 2 O 9 were detected in the joint when the joining temperature was higher than 450 ℃. The shear strength and Vickers hardness of the joint reached 35.14 ± 1.89 MPa and 191.55 ± 13.93 MPa, respectively. The effects of the fractions and size of Bi 4 B 2 O 9 on the shear strength were evaluated, and the fracture mechanism at the interface was also clarified.

Herein we report on a biluminophore fast-responding pressure sensitive coating with a bi-layer structure prepared by a non-sensitive reference base paint and subsequently a classic polymer-ceramic pressure sensitive paint (PSP). The coating procedure is fully sprayable and allows the separation of the two luminophores in each layer to prevent their interference that may affect the pressure responsibility. The major advance is the use of sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) to make the bottom reference layer which ensures the spreading and affinity of the top PSP, composed of a room-temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber (RTV), so that very thin PSP layer, i.e. less than 5 μm, was achieved. Besides, silane-functionalized carbon dots (CDs) was selected as the reference probe, for it could be well-incorporated with the TEOS/MTES matrix, and gained high loading level and hence strong luminescence of the basecoat to overcome the attenuation effect of the top PSP layer. The resultant biluminophore bi-layer fast-responding PSP (denoted as Fast bi-PSP) showed two completed separated emissions with λ max at 430 and 600 nm for the incorporated CDs and the oxygen sensitive ruthenium complex dye, which enables the utility of intensity ratio from blue and red luminescence for the measurement of surface pressure by following Stern-Volmer relationship. Using a shock tube , the response time of the Fast bi-PSP coating was determined to be 0.4–0.6 ms according to the chemical composition . The ability of the coating for monitoring the dynamic evolution of full-field surface pressure was demonstrated on sample plates at attack angles of 0° and 5°. Our work suggests a facile but efficient way for the future design of self-referenced photoluminescent non-contact surface pressure sensing systems.

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to useful low-carbon fuels can not only mitigate global warming problems but also be used for energy storage. For efficient CO2 electrochemical reduction in mild conditions, high-performance catalysts are required. In this work, the electrodeposition of bismuth, tin, or both on copper sheets to fabricate Sn/Cu, BiSn/Cu, Bi2Sn/Cu, Bi3Sn/Cu, Bi4Sn/Cu, and Bi/Cu electrodes was conducted, and the electrodes were used as catalysts in CO2 reduction. Experimental results show these electrodes have high activity, stability and selectivity toward CO2 reduction to formic acid. A maximum Faraday efficiency of 90.4% for formic acid production can be achieved when using a Bi/Cu electrode. The mechanism catalyzed by such electrodes is also proposed for fundamental understanding and is clearly explained on the basis of DFT calculations. The results in this paper demonstrate that electrodeposition can be a faster and easier to operate industrial technology for the fabrication of catalyst electrodes, compared with other technologies.

The Co 2 P@NiCo 2 O 4 bi-functional electrocatalyst was fabricated for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in acidic, neutral and alkaline media. The Co 2 P@NiCo 2 O 4 in alkaline media exhibites an extremely low overpotential of 170 mV in oxygen evolution to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and produces stable water splitting nearly 30 h. The anchored-Co 2 P can enhance the electrochemical performance of pristine NiCo 2 O 4 as well as increase the tolerance in acidic media of NiCo 2 O 4 . Additional, the Co 2 P is oxidized to oxides/hydroxides species during the electrocatalytic reaction , which acts as the active centers of the electrocatalysis . The Co 2 P@NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst can be used as an effective bifunctional synergistic center in a wide range of pH values (from 0 to 14).

Glucose oxidase (GOD) and cytochrome c (Cyt c ) were co-entrapped in the poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)–graphene nanosheets–gold nanoparticles (PDDA–Gp–AuNPs) hybrid nanocomposites modified glassy carbon electrode to prepare a novel bi-protein bio-interphase. Electron transfer and electrocatalysis of the bi-protein bio-interphase were investigated in detail. The results showed that the PDDA–Gp–AuNPs nanocomposites accelerated the electron transfer between proteins and electrode. The bi-protein exhibited effective direct electron transfer (DET) reaction with an apparent rate constant ( k s ) of 2.36 s −1 . The optimal molar ratio and total amount of Cyt c and GOD in the bio-interphase for DET of GOD was estimated to be about 3:1 and 1.40 nmol, respectively. The bi-protein bio-interphase could be used to detect glucose based on the consumption of O 2 with the oxidation of glucose catalyzed by GOD. The resulted biosensor exhibits wide linear range from 2.0 to 18.0 mM. Thus, this study not only successfully achieved DET of GOD, but also constructed a novel biosensor for glucose detection.
