Material design for converting an oxidative-type BiVO4 catalyst into a reductive BiV(S,O)4−x sulfo-oxide catalyst for nitrogen photoreduction to ammonia

Xiaoyun Chen,Pengkun Zhang,Dong-Hau Kuo,Qinhan Wu,Adugna Boke Abdeta,Binghong Wu,Zhengjie Su,Longyan Chen,Osman Ahmed Zelekew,Jinguo Lin

Herein, we demonstrated S2− anion incorporation into BiVO4 for converting an oxidative-type BiVO4 photocatalyst into a reductive-type BiV(S,O)4−x (labeled BiVOS) sulfo-oxide photocatalyst for efficient N2 fixation under an ambient environment. BiVOS-2 not only exhibited the highest NH3 production rate of 563.6 μmol g−1 h−1 without sacrificial agents and with durable stability but also had an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 2.18% at 420 nm and a solar-to-ammonia (STA) conversion efficiency of 0.071% in pure water under AM1.5G light irradiation. At the same time, the sulfur-free BiVO4 can't realize N2 to NH3 conversion. The S2− doping introduced Vo, which converted V5+ around Vo into V4+ to keep the electrical neutrality. The active atoms V4+ were exposed and activated N2, and the electron hopping between V5+ and V4+ improved electron transfer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that S2− anion doping can enhance adsorption energy, elongate the NN bond of the adsorbed N2 molecule, and facilitate electron transfer to the antibonding orbital of the N2 molecule, leading the BiVOS sulfo-oxide catalyst to have excellent N2 fixation activity. This study provides a promising method for converting an oxidative-type catalyst into a reductive catalyst to extend material applications.

Enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation by S-scheme AgI/Cu-BiVO4 heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic organics degradation and Microcystis aeruginosa inactivation: Performance, interfacial engineering and mechanism insight

Jing Li,Dandan Wang,Siyuan Zhao,Rui Ma,Jifeng Guo,Zhuoya Li,Dong Wang,Yue Xuan,Liping Wang

Novel oxygen vacancies-enriched AgI/Cu-BiVO 4 (ACBV) S-scheme heterojunction catalysts were constructed to boost photocatalytic organics degradation and M. aeruginosa inactivation with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) assistance. Specific interfacial charge transfer and abundant active centers were guided by introducing Cu doping and AgI coupling into BiVO 4 , with the catalytic activity and mechanism systematically investigated. The optimal 0.25-ACBV heterojunction exhibited 97.6% tetracycline (TC) degradation under PMS-assisted visible light and achieved effective inactivation of M. aeruginosa within 20 min (78.8%). The S-scheme heterostructure from Cu-BiVO 4 to AgI and synergistic effects endowed the system with high-energy carrier transfer kinetics and strong oxygen reduction capability. Meanwhile, the redox cycling of Cu 2+ /Cu + and surface oxygen defects served as electron acceptors to accelerate interfacial charge separation and as adsorption activation sites for PMS, promoting efficient mass transfer in the non-homogeneous system. This study inspires the design of high-performance S-scheme photocatalytic activators and expands their potential applications in environmental remediation.

Synthesis of a BiVO4/SnS2/Bi2S3 ternary heterojunction via ion exchange: Experimental and DFT study on the synergistic photocatalysis for Cr(VI) reduction and tetracycline degradation

Pengyu Zhang,Jinping Zhang,Yuan Cheng,Hongwei Wang,Minghui Tan,Yake Wang,Tong Zhang,Yunchao Mu,Joshi Mahesh Kumar,Xinli Li

In response to the rising severity of co-pollution from heavy metal ions and organic antibiotics in water, creating efficient synergistic removal technologies has become a critical research direction in environmental catalysis. In this study, a BiVO 4 /SnS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst with a broad spectral response was successfully constructed through a hierarchical construction strategy, using a hydrothermally synthesized BiVO 4 /SnS 2 binary heterojunction as the precursor, followed by in-situ growth of narrow-bandgap Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles via a room-temperature ion exchange method. Characterization results from XRD, TEM and XPS confirmed that SnS 2 nanosheets and Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles were distributed on the BiVO 4 surface, forming a tightly contacted heterojunction interface. The sequential introduction of SnS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 significantly increased the specific surface area of the material (to 14.723 m 2 /g). Optical performance tests demonstrated that the ternary heterojunction exhibited substantially enhanced visible light absorption, with the bandgap narrowing to 2.21 eV. Electrochemical tests revealed a significant reduction in the interfacial charge transfer resistance and a marked improvement in the charge carrier separation efficiency. Photocatalytic performance evaluation indicated that under simulated solar irradiation, BV/SN/BS(1 h) achieved a Cr(VI) reduction rate constant (0.07032 min −1 ) over 15 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 and a TC degradation rate constant (0.00520 min −1 ) approximately 1.3 times higher. In the Cr(VI)-TC combined system, a significant synergistic degradation effect was observed, with the Cr(VI) reduction rate constant further increasing to 0.09252 min −1 and the TC degradation rate constant rising to 0.01471 min −1 . Notably, EPR tests did not detect •O 2 − or •OH radicals. DFT calculations combined with experimental characterization revealed the formation of a type-II heterojunction among BiVO 4 , SnS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 , in which electrons and holes migrate in opposite directions, achieving efficient charge carrier separation. Cr(VI) and TC act as mutual sacrificial agents during the reaction process, further enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. This study provides a novel material construction strategy and theoretical basis for designing efficient photocatalytic systems aimed at the synergistic degradation of heavy metal-organic pollutants from complex water bodies.

Efficient degradation and detoxification of bisphenol analogues through carbon doping and oxygen-vacancy co-modification of BiVO4: risk assessment of BPA alternatives based on toxicity monitoring

Runren Jiang,Chuanxin Li,Min Wang,Qindong Xu,Zehui Li,Yuhao Ji,Honghui Teng

The unregulated use and abuse of bisphenol analogues (BPs) have led to a sharp increase in environmental concentrations. Although photocatalytic technology can effectively degrade these compounds, insufficient attention has been paid to the ecological risks posed by both the parent compounds and their degradation products. In this study, BiVO 4 co-modified with oxygen vacancies and carbon (BVO-3) was successfully prepared via molecular intercalation combined with calcination. This material exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance toward various BPs. Structural characterization and in-situ spectral analysis indicated that oxygen vacancies act as a dynamic “electron reservoir”, working synergistically with carbon doping to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Carbon doping not only enhances pollutant adsorption through π–π conjugation but also, together with oxygen vacancies, improves the activation of molecular oxygen. Toxicity assessment revealed that although the parental toxicity order was BPAF > BPF > BPA, the intermediates of BPAF and BPF exhibited a transient toxicity surge exceeding that of their parent compounds during the early photocatalytic stage. This is attributed to the generation of numerous breakdown products that retain the core toxic structure. In contrast, no such effect was observed for BPA. These findings indicate that, contrary to their intended purpose as safer alternatives, BPAF and BPF pose higher ecological risks during environmental transformation due to the formation of highly toxic intermediates. This study not only developed a method for constructing efficient modified photocatalysts but also proposed that “transformation process toxicity evolution” should be included in the comprehensive ecological risk assessment of pollutants and their substitutes.

The effects of precursors and loading of carbon on the photocatalytic activity of C–BiVO4 for the degradation of high concentrations of phenol under visible light irradiation

Minli Niu,Rongshu Zhu,Fei Tian,Kelin Song,Gang Cao,Feng Ouyang

A series of carbon modified BiVO 4 (C–BiVO 4 ) photocatalysts were synthesized by impregnation calcination method of BiVO 4 with glucose, sucrose and cellulose as precursors, respectively. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, SEM, Raman, BET, UV–vis DRS and PL. Their photocatalytic activities were investigated by degradation of phenol under the visible light. The precursor and loading of carbon had remarkable effects on physical–chemical properties of samples and degradation activities of phenol. The increase of the number of carbon ring in precursors led to a better crystallinity, smaller grain size, larger surface area and higher separation efficiency of electron–hole pairs. The increase of loading led to a smaller catalyst grain size, larger surface area, higher visible light absorption and higher separation efficiency of electron–hole pairs. The results showed that the 0.5   wt.% of C–BiVO 4 –cellulose has the best photocatalytic activity and degraded 88.7% of 5   mg/L phenol. Besides, addition of 25   mmol KBrO 3 as an electron capture agent can degrade 27.4% of 1000   mg/L phenol. The degradation efficiency of the same system above mentioned under sunlight irradiation was 22.6%. In addition, the relationship between the photocatalytic activity of C–BiVO 4 and its physical–chemical properties was also discussed.

A novel split-type photoelectrochemical biosensor based on double-strand specific nuclease-assisted cycle amplification coupled with plasmonic Ag enhanced BiVO4 performance for sensitive detection of microRNA-155

Yu-Yang Wei,Shao-Hua Wu,Qi-Meng Wang,Jian-Jun Sun

A novel split-type and signal-on photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was proposed based on double-strand specific nuclease (DSN)-assisted recycling amplification coupled with photodeposited Ag enhanced BiVO 4 photoanode for sensitive detection of microRNA (miRNA)− 155. In the presence of target miRNA, the capture DNA (cDNA) modified with silver nanocube(AgNC)would hybridize with the miRNA, then DSN-assisted cycle amplification was triggered, leading to the release of AgNCs. The released AgNCs were acidolyzed and photodeposited on the BiVO 4 electrode. Compared with the BiVO 4 electrode, an enhanced photocurrent could be achieved at this obtained BiVO 4 /Ag electrode. And the morphology change from worm-like nanoparticles to nanosheets after Ag photodeposition was observed for the first time. This PEC signal enhancement was mainly contributed to the synergistic action of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag, Schottky junction formed between BiVO 4 and Ag, and the formation of BiVO 4 nanosheets with larger specific surface area. The PEC signal enhancement was positively related to the miRNA-155 concentration, so this method could be used to sensitively and selectively detect miRNA-155. A limit of detection of 8 aM could be achieved. This strategy does not require layer-by-layer modification of the electrode, so it is easy to operate, and owns good stability.

A label-free photoelectrochemical immunosensor for detection of the milk allergen β-lactoglobulin based on Ag2S -sensitized spindle-shaped BiVO4/BiOBr heterojunction by an in situ growth method

Xiaokai Sun,Canguo Li,Qiying Zhu,Haowei Huang,Wei Jing,Zhiwei Chen,Ling Kong,Lei Han,Jun Wang,Yueyun Li

Food allergies have become a nonnegligible food safety issue, and milk allergies are one of the most common food allergies, that has attracted large consumer attention. In this work, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for the detection of the allergen β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) in dairy products was designed that used the specific recognition of allergen β-LG and antibodies in dairy products in combination with biosensing technology . Here, Ag 2 S-sensitized spindle-shaped BiVO 4 /BiOBr heterojunction was fixed on the surface of the ITO electrode as an excellent photoactive substrate and effectively improved the photocurrent responses and sensitivity. Thioglycolic acid (TGA) was used as a linker to immobilize the β-LG antibody on the surface of the electrode. The photocurrent was detected at different antigen concentrations, which realized the quantitative testing of β-LG. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the PEC immunosensor proved an ideal linear relationship ranging from 10 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL, with a low detection limit of 3.7 pg/mL. The designed immunosensor showed good stability, a wide linear range, high sensitivity and good reproducibility and could be used for the detection of actual samples. The PEC immunosensor had a strong ability to specifically recognize β-LG, which was not affected by other proteins in the milk without pretreatment . Meanwhile, the developed immunosensor provided a promising PEC detection platform and reference idea for the detection of other proteins in milk.

Fabrication of MoS2@BL-BiVO4 photoanode with promoted charge separation for photoelectrochemical sewage treatment to simultaneously degrade PPCPs, disinfect E. coli, and produce H2: Performance, mechanisms, and influence factors

Zexiao Zheng,Irene M.C. Lo

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) are ubiquitous in sewage posing adverse effects on both ecosystems and human health. Herein, we propose a multifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) system to simultaneously degrade PPCPs, disinfect E. coli , and produce H 2 . To this end, an optimized MoS 2 @BL-BiVO 4 photoanode with reduced bulk and surface charge recombination was synthesized, exhibiting a photocurrent density of 2.21 mA/cm 2 at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl in actual sewage, 8.1 times that of P-BiVO 4 . The MoS 2 @BL-BiVO 4 photoanode achieved complete degradation of 2 ppm benzophenone-3 and inactivation of E. coli in sewage with 89.32 μmol H 2 evolution at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl in 30 min. Chloride ions in the sewage played a critical role in the PEC system: they were activated to become chloride-based radicals ( Cl, ClO) for sewage treatment and worked as hole scavengers to increase H 2 evolution. Natural organic matters in the sewage played a dominant role in impeding the PEC reactions because they can quench the reactive species and were adsorbed onto the photoanode’s surface to block charge separation. The PEC system shows good efficiency when degrading various PPCPs, and excellent reusability and stability, giving it great practicality.

Up-conversion luminescence and Bi SPR effect promoted Z-scheme BiVO4(040)-Bi-(NaYF4:Er,Yb,Tm@BiOBr)/Bi photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production with simultaneous degradation of malachite green

Shuguang Li,Jize Liu,Haibo Wu,Xinxin Zhang,Yanqiong Guo,Boyang Kang,Limin Zhao

Photocatalytic hydrogen production with simultaneous degradation of organic pollutants by using solar energy provide a promising strategy to solve the energy and environmental issue in the future. However, for onefold wide band-gap semiconductor, the poor photocatalytic efficiency limits its application on a large scale due to its easy recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs and low solar energy utilization. Herein, a novel Z-scheme BiVO 4 (040)-Bi-(NaYF 4 :Er,Yb,Tm@BiOBr)/Bi photocatalyst is prepared via photo-assisted isoelectric point method. In this composite photocatalyst, up-convention luminescence material, NaYF 4 :Er,Yb,Tm, can offer more ultraviolet light and visible light to intensify the activations of BiOBr and metal Bi nanoparticles, respectively. Furthermore, the formation of Z-scheme BiVO 4 (040)-BiOBr photocatalystic sytem, the spatial separation of the BiVO 4 (040) and BiVO 4 (110) facets and the presence of metal Bi surface plasmon resonance effect are contributed to the high-efficiency separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs. The experimental results show that as-prepared Z-scheme BiVO 4 (040)-Bi-(NaYF 4 :Er,Yb,Tm@BiOBr)/Bi photocatalyst exhibits advanced photocatalytic hydrogen production amount (192.0 μm) and excellent degradation ratio of malachite green (88.51 %) under simulated sunlight irradiation for 5.0 h. The apparent quantum yield of the Z-scheme BiVO 4 (040)-Bi-(NaYF 4 :Er,Yb,Tm@BiOBr)/Bi photocatalyst at 420 nm reaches a specific value of 5.8 %. In addition, Z-scheme BiVO 4 (040)-Bi-(NaYF 4 :Er,Yb,Tm@BiOBr)/Bi photocatalyst also remains a high stability in the photocatalytic hydrogen production with simultaneous degradation of malachite green within six reuse. At last, the possible reaction mechanism and degradation pathways of malachite green caused by Z-scheme BiVO 4 (040)-Bi-(NaYF 4 :Er,Yb,Tm@BiOBr)/Bi photocatalyst under simulated sunlight irradiation are put forward.

Highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst constructed by selective doping of Ag@AgBr and Co3O4 separately on {010} and {110} facets of BiVO4: Pre-separation channel and hole-sink effects

Fangfei Chen,Chaoyue Wu,Jinnan Wang,Corvini Philippe François-Xavier,Thomas Wintgens

To improve the visible-light photocatalytic activity and photo-carriers separation of BiVO 4 , highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 was constructed by selective doping of Ag@AgBr and Co 3 O 4 on {010} and {110} facets of BiVO 4 . Due to the different energy levels of conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) between {010} facet and {110} facet, BiVO 4 could act as the ‘pre-separation channel’ to achieve spatial charge separation. Such pre-separation channel effect improved photo-electrons transfer from BiVO 4 {010} facets to electron mediator (Ag°) for subsequent recombination with holes of AgBr. Thus, the photo-induced electrons of AgBr could be accumulated on CB for reduction of O 2 to O 2 − . On the other hand, holes of BiVO 4 accumulated on {110} facets were captured by deriving-hole-type co-catalysts Co 3 O 4 for organics oxidation. In addition, Ag° not only served as the electron mediator of Z-scheme but also improve the visible-light utilization due to SPR-effect. Being attributed to the synergistic effect of pre-separation channel and deriving-hole-type co-catalysts, Z-scheme structured Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 (0.15 wt%) achieved high photodegradation rate of organics. Even after 9th cycles, Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 (0.15 wt%) could still photodegraded more than 90% of OTC within 24 min. DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical analyses also confirmed the improvement of visible-light utilization and charge separation of Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 . The radical trapping experiments and EPR demonstrated that both superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) were main active species for organics photodegradation. In summary, this work not only constructed a highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst, but also provided a new method to diminish the photo-carriers recombination by pre-separation channel and hole-sink effects.
