Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) features a unique fingerprint spectrum for fast and highly sensitive non-destructive detection without sample pretreatment. Aiming at the problem of few “hot spot” and uneven distribution of traditional SERS substrate, in this work, a surface-enhanced Raman substrate of silica/carbon nanotubes/silver nanoparticles (SiO 2 /CNTs/AgNPs) with high on all sides and low in the middle was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The AgNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the average diameter was 38 nm to 63 nm. The substrate exhibited high sensitivity, stability, and uniformity with a detection limit of 10 −12 M for rhodamine 6G (R6G). Furthermore, we conducted an in-depth research on the enhancement contribution of the substrate by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD); the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, the substrate was used for the detection of phenol red in water; the results showed that the Raman intensity was exponentially related to the concentration of phenol red solution with the coefficient of determination R 2 = 0.99991, which provided a new method for detecting water pollutants. Tailoring nanofiltration (NF) membrane with low scaling potential and high energy efficiency is of critical importance to its practical implementation for groundwater remediation . In this study, interfacial polymerization was performed on the surface of an intermediate layer of TA-Fe/CNTs coated polyether sulfone (PES) substrate to obtain a loose NF membrane (TFNi-x) with negative surface charges and optimized water transport path for selective permeation of scaling ions and higher water permeance . The obtained TFNi-10 intermediated with a moderate amount of CNTs (10 μg/cm 2 ) exhibited 80.5 % higher selectivity of Ca 2+ over SO 4 2− and 156 % higher water permeance compared to the control TFC while maintaining a high PFOA rejection (∼97.3 %). For the gypsum scaling measurements, TFNi-10 showed better anti-scaling behavior and 40 % less pressure energy consumption for the same recovered water volume (2.2 L), resulting in the higher water recovery and lower energy cost of specific volume of the permeate. It was contributed by the synergistic effects of the strong affinity of TA-Fe to piperazine monomer and the gutter effect of TA-Fe/CNTs interlayer . Our results paved a new way of fabricating novel NF membrane with tailored intermediate layer for optimized interfacial polymerization to realizing groundwater remediation in a cost-effective manner.

Silicone rubber with its odorless and non-toxic, high and low temperature resistance and other advantages is widely used in many fields, but its shortcomings of flammability and low thermal conductivity limit its application and development. Therefore, the research on flame retardant and thermal conductive silicone rubber is practically valueable. In this study, iron oxyhydroxide (β-FeOOH) was synthesized on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by in situ growth and added to silicone rubber after surface modification with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550). The results showed that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of methyl vinyl silicone rubber (VMQ) with the addition of one part of KH550@CNTs-β-FeOOH increased to 29.8%, its peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased by 40.1% and 30.2%, respectively, and its thermal conductivity increased to 0.3680 W/m·k. The flame-retardant performance and thermal conductivity of the VMQ composite were significantly improved. The improvement of its flame retardancy was mainly due to the catalytic carbonization of CNTs and β-FeOOH, which promoted the formation of dense carbon layers. The carbon layer insulates the exchange of oxygen and combustible gases. In addition, the thermal conductive network constructed by KH550@CNTs-β-FeOOH in the composite effectively improved the thermal conductivity of VMQ.

Ingenious microstructure design and appropriate multicomponent strategies are still challenging for advanced electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with excellent shielding effectiveness (SE) and reliable mechanical properties in harsh environments and low filling levels. In this study, nickel@multiwalled carbon nanotubes/alumina (Ni@CNTs/Al2O3) ceramic composites with segregated structures and electric/magnetic-coupling networks anchored by CNTs and magnetic Ni nanofillers were prepared by hot-press sintering. CNTs/Al2O3 ceramic composites exhibit a percolation threshold of only about 0.32013 vol %, which is lower than those of other reported CNTs/Al2O3 composites with segregated or uniformly dispersed structures. The electrical conductivity and EMI SE of 9CNTs/Al2O3 ceramic composites with 9 vol % (4.76 wt %) CNT content were 103.1 S/m and 33.6 dB, respectively. In addition, EMI SE and toughness were both enhanced by the synergistic effect of Ni nanoparticles and CNTs. In the unit of a segregated structure, a three-dimensional (3D) electric/magnetic-coupling network effectively captures and attenuates electromagnetic wave energy by electrical conduction, dielectric loss, and magnetic loss. On the other hand, the pull-out of CNTs and deflection of cracks distributed along the segregated structures synergistically enhance the fracture toughness of Ni@CNTs/Al2O3 ceramic composites. High-performance 3Ni@5CNTs/Al2O3 ceramic composites with 5 vol % (2.64 wt %) and 3 vol % (0.76 wt %) CNT contents have been achieved, whose EMI SE is 41.8 dB, density is 90.99%, flexural strength is 197.83 ± 18.62 MPa, and fracture toughness is 6.03 ± 0.23 MPa·m1/2. This efficient method provides a promising way to fabricate EMI shielding ceramic composites with high mechanical properties.

Accurately evaluating the aging state of oil paper insulation in electrical equipment is a key to ensure the safe operation of the power transformer. For achieving highly sensitive in-situ detection of dissolved furfural in transformer oil with good reproducibility, flower-like silver nanoparticles modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs@Ag-F-AgNPs) was synthesized by a combination of electroless silver plating and redox method. The large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity of CNTs@Ag promoted the formation of more “hot spots”. CNTs@Ag-F-AgNPs were adsorbed on Si-Au substrate via mercapto groups on the coupling agent 1′4 phenyldimercaptan molecule (BDT). Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe molecule, the enhanced factor reached 6.96 × 10 9 . Then, the substrate was used for in-situ SERS detection of transformer oil-dissolved furfural at different concentrations and the detection limit was 2.25 mg/L at 1703 cm −1 (Stretching vibration of C = O in furfural molecule), fulfilling requirements of furfural content detection after severe aging of transformer (4 mg/L). Besides, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of characteristic peak intensity at ten different positions was only 1.74%. These results exhibite that three-dimensional nanostructure with high sensitivity and good reproducibility exhibited a wide application range for in situ detection of dissolved trace furfural in transformer oil.

The energy storage device has been urgently studied and developed to meet the increasing demand for energy and sustainable development. Due to the excellent conductivity of graphene and high performance of ZnCo 2 O 4 and NiCo 2 O 4 , we design a self-supporting electrode based on vertically grown two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnCo 2 O 4 hierarchical flakes on the carbon-based conductive substrate (NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnCo 2 O 4 @graphene/carbon nanotubes, NZ@GC). The density functional theory calculations indicate that the high OH − adsorption capacity of the NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnCo 2 O 4 nanosheets can significantly enhance the electrochemical reaction activity. NZ@GC shows a high capacitance of 1128.6 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . The capacitance retains 84.0% after 6000 cycles even at 10 A g −1 . A hybrid supercapacitor is fabricated using NZ@GC and activated carbon, exhibiting a large energy density of 50.8 W h kg −1 at the power density of 800 W kg −1 . After 9000 charge/discharge cycles, the supercapacitor still has 86.1% capacitance retention. The NZ@GC film has showed the potential as promising electrodes in high efficiency electrochemical energy storage devices.

Aiming to the repetitively large volume change and the inevitably loss of volumetric capacity of bismuth (Bi) based sodium-ion battery (SIB) during cycling, a binder-free Bi anode based on one-step electrochemical co-deposited three-dimensional Bi nanosheets and conductive carbon nanotube networks (Bi NS/CNTs) was developed. Compared with the sole Bi anode achieved via the same strategy, the co-deposition of 3D hierarchical Bi nanosheet/CNTs arrays manifests the strong interfacial adhesion and accommodates the volume change upon sodium alloying/dealloying. Such structural feature endows the Bi NS/CNTs anode a long-term cycling stability (383.72 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 200 cycles, 311.68 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles) and a good rate performance. A full SIB assembled with Bi NS/CNTs anode and Na 3 (VOPO 4 ) 2 F@rGO cathode shows a high operating voltage (above 4 V) and a high energy density of 221.99 Wh kg −1 , which outperforms many reported Bi-based analogues. This work may open a new opportunity for developing efficient SIB with high energy and good practicability.

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared by using acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) as hydrogen bonding donors (HBD) and choline chloride (ChCl) as hydrogen bonding receptors (HBA). Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) were dispersed in DES as fillers, and N-CNTs/P(AA-co-AM) composite hydrogels were prepared by FP. The interaction mode between the hydrogel and N-CNTs was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties, pH response and electrical conductivity of the composite hydrogels were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were significantly enhanced with the increase of N-CNT content. The tensile strength and compressive strength of the FP4 composite hydrogel reached 5.42 MPa and 4.29 MPa, respectively. Due to the dissociation of carboxyl groups in AA in an alkaline environment the composite hydrogel showed excellent pH response performance. The conductivity of the hydrogel was also found to be improved with the content of N-CNTs. When the content of N-CNTs is 1.0 wt%, the conductivity of the hydrogel was 4.2 times higher than that of the hydrogel without N-CNTs, and connecting it to a circuit can make an LED lamp emit bright light. In this study, a simple and green method was proposed to prepare composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity by FP of DES in less than 5 min.

A novel efficient catalyst called Ag/N-doped TiO 2 /CNTs was fabricated using a two-step method involving treatment with ammonia plasma followed by a process of hydrogen plasma reduction at a low temperature. The photocatalyst , which was composed of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and 5% amount of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), achieved an adequate formaldehyde elimination rate of 95% under visible-light irradiation. A series of analytical methods was employed to investigate the advantages of the novel fabrication method . The results showed that the first step, which is the N doping of TiO 2 could be particularly important for improving the photocatalytic performance because of the reduced band gap and newly formed Ti 3+ . Furthermore, it could assist in the anchor of AgNPs during the second step of fabrication. During the second step of hydrogen reduction process, AgNPs of smaller sizes were more homogeneously anchored on the surface of N-doped TiO 2 /CNTs than that of the catalysts without ammonia plasma treatment . The resulting higher level of AgNPs could aid in efficient electron transfer and significantly improve the response to visible light, considering the surface plasmon resonance effect. CNTs and AgNPs played significant roles as electron acceptors in reducing the recombination rate of photogenerated hole pairs, and moreover, this two-step plasma process could be beneficial for achieving surface and interface properties suitable for formaldehyde photodegradation . This novel approach for fabricating an efficient Ag/N-doped TiO 2 /CNTs has potential for application in environmental purification systems.

The rational design and preparation of bifunctional electrocatalysts with pleasant oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is crucial for extensive commercial applications of rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we report a simple method to obtain multi-metal (Fe, Ni, Zn) embedded in N-doped carbon sheets entangled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as superior oxygen electrocatalysts (FeNi-NCS-2). The resultant FeNi-NCS-2 exhibits an impressive electrochemical performance, providing a reversible oxygen overpotential as low as 0.758 V. The ZAB with FeNi-NCS-2 as the air cathode shows a promising capacity of 639.71 mAh g −1 at 20 mA cm −2 , a power density of 109.8 mW cm −2 and cycling stability of over 130 cycles at 10 mA cm −2 with an energy efficiency of about 55%, superior to the ZAB based on Pt/C–IrO 2 . The satisfactory electrocatalytic performance is mainly due to the Fe, Ni-based nanoparticles protected by graphitic carbon layers, hierarchical porous lamellar structures that promote the accessibility between the active centers and the electrolyte as well as self-growing tangled carbon nanotubes that provide fast transmission channels. This study presents a facile way for the synthesis of highly efficient ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts for high-performance rechargeable ZABs.

Mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (Ni/CNTs, Co/CNTs and NiCo/CNTs) were synthesized at room temperature (RT) via hydrazine hydrate reduction method without any surfactant. The galvanic replacement reaction was exploited to prepare Rh/Ni/CNTs, Rh/Co/CNTs and Rh/NiCo/CNTs supported nanocatalysts. Prepared nanocatalysts were extensively characterized using an array of advanced analytical techniques. The catalytic performance of the catalysts was evaluated in the hydrogenation of tetralin. Reduced Rh/NiCo/CNTs catalyst (Rh-on-NiCo NP) exhibited high catalytic activity at RT, significantly improved as compared to Rh/Ni/CNTs and Rh/Co/CNTs due to the interfacial nano-synergy effect among different metallic related species (Rh, Ni and Co). In-situ XAS results confirmed the mechanism of the interfacial nano-synergy effect, wherein Rh sites provided activated hydrogen species (H*), and H* was subsequently transferred to the surface of NiCo NPs; while tetralin was adsorbed and activated at NiCo sites, reacting with H* to produce decalin. The present work proposed a novel strategy to design highly efficient and stable multimetallic catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions.

Graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have their own advantages in electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. An effective combination of these materials is ideal for preparing transparent conductive films to replace the traditional indium tin oxide films. At present, the preparation conditions of rGO are usually harsh and some of them have toxic effects. In this paper, an SnCl 2 /ethanol solution was selected as the reductant because it requires mild reaction conditions and no harmful products are produced. The whole process of rGO preparation was convenient, fast and environmentally friendly. Then, SEM, XPS, Raman, and XRD were used to verify the high reduction efficiency. CNTs were introduced to improve the film conductive property. The transmittance and sheet resistance were the criteria used to choose the reduction time and the content ratios of GO/CNT. Thanks to the post-treatment of nitric acid, not only the by-product (SnO 2 ) and dispersant in the film are removed, but also the doping effect occurs, which are all conducive to reducing the sheet resistances of films. Ultimately, by combining rGO, GO and CNTs, transparent conductive films with a bilayer and three-dimensional structure were prepared, and they exhibited high transmittance and low sheet resistance (58.8 Ω/sq. at 83.45 T%, 47.5 Ω/sq. at 79.07 T%), with corresponding \({{\sigma_{dc} } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\sigma_{dc} } {\sigma_{opt} }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sigma_{opt} }}\) values of 33.8 and 31.8, respectively. In addition, GO and rGO can modify the surface and reduce the film surface roughness. The transparent conductive films are expected to be used in photoelectric devices.
