Herein, nitrogen and sulfur codoped carbon dots (N&S CDs) were prepared by a facile hydrothermal process and they could be introduced as a fluorescent probe for the determination of cadmium ions (Cd2+), yielding high sensitivity and excellent selectivity. The obtained N&S CDs exhibited bright blue fluorescence with a quantum yield of 40% and exhibited a fast responsive fluorescence quenching signal within 2 min toward Cd2+ in both ultrapure water and real water samples. The CDs responded to Cd2+, which acted as a quencher of blue fluorescence at 459 nm with the limit of detection of 0.018 μM in the range of 0.02–1 μM. The quenching fluorescence behavior was found to obey the static quenching effect (SQE). The low toxicity and good cell permeability of CDs were verified by cell experiments.

Since Cd(II) and As(III) have extremely opposite chemical characteristics, it is a huge challenging to simultaneously remove these two ions from aqueous solutions. Therefore, a novel iron sulfide-based porous biochar (FSB) was synthesized and used to evaluate its Cd(II) and As(III) removal performance and mechanisms. The characterization and batch experiments results indicated that FeS was successfully loaded on the surface of biochar and increased its adsorption sites. The iron sulfide-based porous biochar was very favorable for the removal of Cd(II) and As(III) in the weakly acidic environment. The maximum adsorption of Cd(II) and As(III) by FSB was 108.8 mg g −1 and 76.3 mg g −1 , respectively, according to the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption model, and the adsorption equilibrium time was 12 h and 4 h, respectively, according to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In the coexisting ion system, Cd(II) adsorption was suppressed by Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and humic acid, but enhanced by PO 4 3− and As(III). As(III) adsorption was inhibited by PO 4 3− and humic acid. Precipitation and complexation are the predominant adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II) and As(III), which contribute to the formation of Cd-O, Fe-O-Cd, As-O, Fe-O-As, ternary complex Cd-Fe-As, and stable compounds FeAsO 4 ·2H 2 O and CdS. Therefore, The iron sulfide-based porous biochar can be an efficient and environmentally friendly candidate for the treatment of Cd(II) and As(III) co-polluted irrigation water.

In this paper, air-dried lake sludge was pretreated by ball milling, and then pyrolysed at 600°C to prepare lake sludge-derived ball milling biochar, and Fe 3 O 4 was loaded on lake sludge-derived ball milling biochar by chemical precipitation. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate and characterize the adsorbents. The results demonstrated that ball mill pretreatment and Fe 3 O 4 -loaded can effectively increase the content of O-containing groups in the adsorbent. The batch adsorption experiments revealed that Cd(II) removal followed the pseudo-second- order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. Additionally, the Cd(II) maximum adsorption by biochar (BC), MBBC and Fe 3 O 4 @MBBC was 31.33, 47.36 and 92.42 mg/g, respectively. The Cd(II) removal mechanisms were complexation, ion exchange, co-precipitation and electrostatic interaction. The Cd(II) removal efficiency on Fe 3 O 4 @MBBC was maintained at 91.35% after 5 adsorption– desorption experiments, indicating that Fe 3 O 4 @MBBC had the ability to be better applied for the removal of Cd(II)-containing wastewater.

The removal of Cd from irrigation water and the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil remain significant challenges. Herein, we developed necklace-like core-shell structured mesoporous silica-coated nanoscale zero-valent iron (NL-NZVI@mHs) to efficiently remediate Cd-contaminated water and soil. The obtained materials had a large specific surface area and a higher adsorption capacity of 41.38 mg/g on Cd(II) [this was 5.7 times for nano-zero-valent iron (NZVI) alone]. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that ligand exchange, surface complexation, and electrostatic adsorption were the main mechanisms of Cd(II) adsorption. In addition, NL-NZVI@mHs exhibited good performance in the removal of Cd(II) from practical irrigation water samples. The nanochain mesoporous term chain of zero-valent iron exhibits long-term stability, indicating that it can be used multiple times (reduce waste volume). Furthermore, the addition of the obtained NL-NZVI@mHs composites decreased the bioavailability of Cd in the soil and significantly reduced the Cd content in rice seedlings. The results of this study provide a promising strategy for the remediation of Cd-polluted water and soil that may have large-scale applications in the future. Graphical abstract

Heavy metal pollution is an abiotic factor that can affect the efficiency of pest control. In this study, two microbial pesticides , Bacillus thuringiensis and Mamestra brassicae nuclear polyhedrosis virus (MbNPV), were used to treat Hyphantria cunea larvae with Cd pre-exposure, and the humoral and cellular immunity of H. cunea larvae with Cd exposure were evaluated. The results showed that Cd exposure increased the susceptibility of H. cunea larvae to microbial pesticides B. thuringiensis and MbNPV, and the lethal effect of Cd exposure and microbial pesticides on H. cunea larvae was synergistic. Cd exposure significantly decreased the expression of pathogen recognition genes (GNBP1 and GNBP3), signal transduction genes (Relish, Myd88, Tube, and Imd), and antimicrobial peptide gene (Lebocin) in the humoral immunity of H. cunea larvae compared with the untreated larvae. Parameters of cellular immunity, including the number of hemocytes , phagocytic activity , melanization activity, encapsulation activity, and the expression of three phagocytic regulatory genes (HEM1, GALE1, GALE2), were also found to decrease significantly in Cd-treated larvae. TOPSIS analysis showed that humoral immunity, cellular immunity, and total immunity levels of H. cunea larvae with Cd exposure were weaker than those in untreated larvae. Correlation analysis showed that the mortality of two microbial pesticides investigated in H. cunea larvae was negatively correlated with the humoral and cellular immunity of larvae. Taken togther, Cd exposure results in immunotoxic effects on H. cunea larvae and the use of microbial pesticides are an effective strategy for pest control in heavy metal-polluted areas.

A novel composite fluorescence probe (oPD-CDs@UiO-66-NH2) was successfully prepared for NO detection in the aqueous phase, where carbon quantum dots (oPD-CDs) with NO recognition units were doped in a hydrothermally stable metal–organic framework material (UiO-66-NH2). oPD-CDs and UiO-66-NH2 combined by electrostatic adsorption, and oPD-CDs were uniformly distributed within the pore channel of UiO-66-NH2. This not only suppressed the aggregate induced fluorescence quenching occurring in carbon quantum dots, but also facilitated the efficient detection of NO. The prepared novel fluorescence probes were more sensitive to NO detection than pure oPD-CDs. NO can be detected in a wide linear concentration range of 6.25–500 μM with a lower limit of detection of 4.27 μM. The probes had high selectivity for NO analogs as well as other common substances. This was mainly attributed to the modification of UiO-66-NH2 by oPD-CDs, which can improve the efficient and selective adsorption of NO.

Choline chloride, acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) were used as raw materials to prepare deep eutectic solvent, and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was used as filler to prepare β-CD/P(AM- co -AA) composite hydrogel by frontal polymerization. The composite hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The pH response, mechanical properties and self-healing of the hydrogel were studied. The results show that AA contains easily ionized –COOH, which makes the composite hydrogel have excellent pH response and super-high swelling ratio under alkaline conditions. With the addition of β-CD, due to the increase of hydrogen bonds and the combination of β-CD and polymer chains the mechanical properties of the hydrogel are obviously improved and the tensile strength and compressive strength are increased by 4.12 and 2.26 times respectively. The introduction of β-CD can improve the self-healing performance of the composite hydrogel. With the increase of β-CD content, the healing rate and healing speed of the composite hydrogel show an upward trend. In this study, a simpler and faster method is proposed to prepare self-healing composite hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties and pH responsiveness. The self-healing property and the existence of a hydrophobic cavity of β-CD make β-CD/P(AM- co -AA) composite hydrogel have potential application in wound healing. © 2023 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

In this paper, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was constructed using Bi 2 S 3 @Au nanoflowers as the based nanomaterial and [email protected] and CdS QDs as independent ECL emission signal respectively. As the substrate of the working electrode, Bi 2 S 3 @Au nanoflowers improved the effective area of electrode and accelerated electron transfer rate between gold nanoparticles and aptamer, provided a good interface environment for the loading of luminescent materials. Then, the [email protected] functionalized DNA2 probe was used as an independent ECL signal source under positive potential and recognized Cd(II), while the CdS QDs functionalized DNA3 probe was used as an independent ECL signal source under negative potential and recognized ampicillin. The simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and ampicillin in different concentrations are realized. This sensor not only has good selectivity and high sensitivity in real sample detection, but also open up a novel way to construct multi-target ECL biosensor for simultaneous detection.

A two-dimensional (2D) water-stable Cd (II) luminescent coordination polymer ( 1 ), namely {[CdLCl 2 ]} n , was obtained through assembly of a new 2-deoxy- d -ribose derivative ligand (L) with CdCl 2 , 1 showed high stability in water. Further investigation showed that 1 can be used as luminescent probe for the organoarsenic compound Roxarsine (ROX) with high selectivity and sensitivity, high quenching constants (K SV = 2.34 × 10 4 M −1 ), low limits of detection (LOD) (0.16 μM) and good recyclability in aqueous media. In addition, this luminescent probe can detect some inorganic harmful ions (Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− and CrO 4 2− ) with excellent versatility. The detection mechanism was proved that the quenching was caused by competitive absorption and resonance energy transfer effect between 1 and analytes. More strikingly, a simple 1 -based test strip was developed owing to the quick response and recyclability of 1 , which shows visible quenching signals under UV light even when analytes concentrations are as low as 5 μM. This work has provided an effective method for the design of multifunctional CP luminescent sensors for pollutants detections in aqueous media.

Resource utilization of gangue solid waste has become an essential research direction for green development. This study prepared a novel gangue based geopolymer adsorbent (GPA) for the removal of Cd(II) from wastewater using pretreatment gangue (PG) as the main raw material. The ANOVA indicated that the obtained quadratic model of fitness function (R 2 > 0.99, P-value <0.0001) was significant and adequate, and the contribution of the three preparation conditions to the removal of Cd(II) was: calcination temperature > Na 2 CO 3 :PG ratio > water-glass solid content. The hybrid response surface method and gray wolf optimization (RSM-GWO) algorithm were adopted to acquire the optimum conditions: Na 2 CO 3 :PG ratio = 1.05, calcination temperature of 701 °C, solid content of water glass of 22.42%, and the removal efficiency of Cd(II) by GPA obtained under the optimized conditions (GPAC) was 97.84%. Adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and characterization by XRD, FTIR, Zeta potential , FSEM-EDS and BET were utilized to investigate the adsorption mechanism of GPAC on Cd(II). The results showed that the adsorption of Cd(II) from GPAC was consistent with the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 = 0.9936) and the Langmuir model (R 2 = 0.9988), the adsorption was a monolayer adsorption process and the computed maximum Cd(II) adsorption (50.76 mg g −1 ) was approximate to experimental results (51.47 mg g −1 ). Moreover, the surface morphology of GPAC was rough and porous with a specific surface area (SSA) of 18.54 m 2 g −1 , which provided abundant active sites, and the internal kaolinite was destroyed to produce a zeolite-like structure where surface complexation and ion exchange with Cd(II) through hydroxyl (-OH) and oxygen-containing groups (-SiOH and -AlOH) were the main adsorption mechanisms. Thus, GPAC is a lucrative adsorbent material for effective Cd(II) wastewater treatment , complying with the “high value-added” usage of solid wastes and “waste to cure poison” green sustainable development direction.

“Core sliding” in metal nanoclusters drives the reconstruction of external structural units and provides an ideal platform for mapping their precise transformation mechanism and evolution pathway. However, observing the movement behavior of metal atoms in experiments is still challenging because of the uncertain stability of intermediates. In this work, a series of Au–Cd alloy nanoclusters with continuously assembled kernels (one icosahedral building block assembled with 0 to 3 tetrahedral units) were constructed. As the assembly continued, it eventually led to the Cd atom doping into the inner positions of the clusters. Importantly, the Cd doped into the interior of the cluster exhibits a different behavior than the surface or external Cd atoms (dispersion doping vs localized occupy), which provides experimental evidence of the sliding behavior in the nanocluster kernel. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that this sliding behavior in the inner sites of nanoclusters is an energetically favorable process. In addition, these Au–Cd nanoclusters exhibit tunable optical properties with different assembly patterns in their kernels.

Nonylphenol (NP) and cadmium (Cd), very toxic to microorganisms , plants, and animals, are often detected simultaneously in soil and water. Selenium (Se) is important to microorganisms and plants. A pot experiment was carried out to explore the effect of Se on the efficiency of ryegrass in the remediation of NP-Cd co-contaminated soil. The removal rate of soil NP and Cd increased by 6.2 % and 30.8 %, respectively, with the application of exogenous Se in NP-contaminated soil (50 mg·kg −1 ). The selenium significantly increased the catalase activity (11.5–24.5%), but decreased the activities of acid phosphatase (5.5–9.0 %), invertase (19.8–22.5 %), and urease (11.1–18.4 %) in NP contaminated soil (50 mg·kg −1 ) ( p <0.05). The selenium also increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, including Massilia , Burkholderiaceae , Micrococcales, and Sphingomonas in the NP-Cd co-contaminated soil. These bacteria are closely related to Cd and NP pollution remediation. In summary, applying Se to the contaminated soil effectively improved the efficiency of the phytoremediation of NP and Cd, and also increased the relative abundance and diversity of microorganisms in the NP-Cd co-contaminated soil. These findings can attract practical interest in phytoremediation measures of organic and heavy metals co-contaminated soil.
