ZIF-67 has garnered much attention in the field of photocatalytic water splitting due to the advantages of MOFs and zeolite sieves. However, post-modification and composite strategies have emerged as effective approaches to enhance its photocatalytic performance, particularly in enabling bi-functionality for oxidation-coupled reduction reactions. In this study, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) modified ZIF-67 and cadmium sulfide (CdS) composites were prepared to investigate their application in photocatalytic oxidation-coupled hydrogen evolution reactions. The results demonstrated an enhancement in hydrogen production performance over CdS@ZIF-67-MBI, with an increase from 2.39 mmol g−1 h−1 to 4.49 mmol g−1 h−1 upon the introduction of MBI. Moreover, the conversion efficiency of benzyl alcohol reached an improved value of 58.5%. The study findings revealed that the heterogeneous coupling between ZIF-67 and CdS, along with the effective charge transfer facilitated by the anion S, played a decisive role in promoting charge–hole separation of composite materials and improving carrier transport efficiency. This demonstrates the viability of utilizing ZIF-67 in a bifunctional photocatalytic reaction system, thereby paving the way for broader applications of ZIF-67.

Metal sulfides with suitable morphology typically possess efficient solar light utilization and suitable band structures for photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, a significant challenge is faced in developing the optimal morphology of individual semiconductors and precisely modulating hybrid heterostructures. Herein, this work reports the superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of hexagonal CdS pyramids compared to other nanostructured CdS catalysts. Additionally, ZnS nanoparticles with zinc vacancies are grown in situ on the surface of the hexagonal CdS pyramids, meticulously constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction of CdS/ZnS. By elaborately adjusting the ratio of Cd to Zn sources, the interfacial structure of the heterojunction can be optimized to significantly reduce the obstruction of charge transfer. With the same concentrations of Cd and Zn sources, the CdS/ZnS heterojunction hexagonal pyramid–nanoparticle morphology exhibits a significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 4660 μmol h−1 g−1 under visible light, which is 4.6 and 84.72 times higher than those of pristine CdS pyramids and ZnS nanoparticles, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results comprehensively demonstrate the promoted interfacial charge separation in the Z-scheme CdS/ZnS. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of catalyst morphology and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient photocatalysis.

The introduction of MoS 2 is beneficial to the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs for CdS/TiO 2 . Herein, MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method at 200 °C and applied to photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The batch characterizations showed the irregular spherical MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites with low bandgap (1.95 eV) and high chemical stability. MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites displayed the rapid removal rate of U(VI) (more than 90 % under 15 min illumination), good regeneration (> 91 % after four cycles) due to the highly efficient separation of electron-hole pair. The possible photocatalytic pathway was demonstrated to be the main active ·O 2 − radical by quenching experiments, ESR and XPS analysis. This work highlights the potential application of MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 on removal of radioactive wastewater in the actual remediation.

It is of great significance and challenges to construct physical field-enhanced photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications. Herein, an artificial-photosynthesized CdS/PbTiO 3 S-scheme heterostructures with the enhancement of polarization electric field have been developed to promote the bifunctionally catalytic efficiencies for Cr(VI) photoreduction degradation of heavy metal pollution and Tetracycline (TC) photooxidation degradation of antibiotic. In our work, CdS nanoparticles are selectively grown on the positive polarization planes of PbTiO 3 microplates to form the same direction for both the ferroelectric polarization field of PbTiO 3 and the built-in electric field of S-scheme heterojunction. In this case, the stable heterostructures of PTO(00−1)/CdS(010) are obtained, and the greatly improved photocatalytic performances of redox degradation are achieved. The charge transfer mechanism and the synergetic effect between the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and S-scheme heterojunction have been revealed by DFT calculations and experimental verifications. This interesting finding provides new insight into the design of efficient artificial-photosynthesized photocatalytic systems and we hope our work could serve as a valuable reference for our colleagues.

Photocatalytic oxidation technology using solar energy is an effective strategy to solve environmental pollution and energy shortage. To avoid angle dependence of traditional photonic crystal photocatalysts and address the limitations of high charge recombination rate and low light utilization of TiO 2 , this study proposed a novel inverse opal TiO 2 /CdS photonic crystal beads (IO TiO 2 /CdS PCBs) photocatalyst. By leveraging the synergistic coupling of PCBs’ slow light effect and TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction, the photocatalytic activity was significantly enhanced. The results revealed that the PCBs matching the blue edge with TiO 2 ′s electronic band gap (IO TiO 2 -140 PCBs) exhibited the highest apparent rate constant of 0.01901 min −1 . By introducing CdS to form a heterojunction with TiO 2 , the photocatalytic performance was further improved by effectively inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The degradation rate of RhB reached 96.6 % in 60 min, outperforming that of IO TiO 2 at 65.1 %, with the rate constant increasing by 3.1 times. Electron spin resonance and trapping experiments indicated that h + was the main active specie, and the possible reaction mechanism path was proposed. The combination of “extrinsic” modifications by doping CdS and “self-structural” modifications by shaping TiO 2 into periodic IO PCBs structure provided a systematic insight on the design of novel photocatalysts.

Photoelectrochemical water splitting represents a promising route for converting solar energy into hydrogen, but sluggish reaction kinetics associated with inefficient charge separation and migration, and poor stability limit solar-to-hydrogen conversion. In this work, we develop a N-doped-CdS/TiO 2 -nanorods heterojunction photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting by anchoring CdS on TiO 2 nanorods followed by nitrogen doping. The light harvesting is significantly enhanced and the charge separation and migration are promoted due to the formed heterojunction and nitrogen doping, which greatly enhances the water oxidation reaction. As a result, the photoelectrochemical cell with the optimized N-doped-CdS/TiO 2 -nanorods heterojunction photoanode yields a hydrogen production rate of 42.6 μmol cm −2 h −1 , which is 2.51 times higher than that of the TiO 2 -nanorods photoanode. In particular, doping nitrogen atoms into CdS greatly alleviates the photocorrosion problem. Therefore, the newly-developed photoanode exhibits excellent stability under a continuous 10-h running.

The construction of a heterojunction with multichannel charge transfer represents an effective strategy for achieving efficient visible light photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this study, the TiO 2 /CdS/Co 2 P ternary photocatalyst was synthesized by stepwise assembly method. The UPS and work function(Φ) results confirmed the band structure and associated band bending of TiO 2 /CdS/Co 2 P, the multichannel electrons transfer from CdS to TiO 2 and CdS to Co 2 P can induce more charge carriers to participate in photocatalytic reaction. Moreover, combine with the results of 3D model charge density and photoelectric performance characterization, proves that the as-prepared ternary photocatalyst accelerates the transfer of photo-generated electrons and reduces the charge recombination rates. According to the Gibbs free energy results, Co as the additional active site is beneficial for hydrogen desorption, thus achieving a high hydrogen production result. Based on the synergistic effects, TiO 2 /55CdS/5.5Co 2 P presented a relatively high hydrogen evolution rate of 250.9 μmol h −1 under the visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is almost 2 times higher than CdS/5.5Co 2 P (122.8 μmol h −1 ). This work provides theoretical guidance and practical insights for constructing ternary heterojunction structures with central-to-bilateral electron migration to achieve efficient visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production.

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on cerium (Ce) doped CdS modified graphene (G)/BiYWO 6 was designed, which exhibits enhanced PEC intensity compared with pure BiYWO 6 , G/BiYWO 3 and BiYWO 6 /Ce:CdS. In this scenario, ascorbic acid (AA) was exploited as an efficient and non-poisonous electron donor for scavenging photogenerated holes. The doping of Ce in CdS promoted its visible light absorption range and facilitated the charge transfer rate as well as hindered the h + /e - recombination. Moreover, the combination of G further promoted the electron carrier separation and transfer process due to its excellent electron collection and shuttling characteristic. Thus, the G/BiYWO 6 /Ce:CdS heterostructure was successfully served as a matrix for the PEC detection of tetracycline (Tc) at 0 V (vs Hg/Hg 2 Cl 2 ). Under optimal conditions, the PEC aptasensor could offer a sensitive and specific detection limit (3 S/N) of Tc down to 0.01 ng/mL, as well as acceptable reproducibility, selectivity and storage stability, which opened up a promising pathway for the development of PEC biosensors.

A series of hierarchical flower-like CdS/carbon quantum dots/NiAl-LDH (CCL) photocatalyst have been successfully prepared to achieve efficient conversion of CO 2 -to-CO via a simple yet effective hydrothermal method. In the CCL, interspersed-CQDs not only increase the number of reactive sites but also reduce inner electronic impedance with the assistance of light reflecting-scattering effect. This significantly improves electron migration efficiency and inhibits the recombination of photoinduced electron-holes pairs. Without any sacrificial agent or photosensitizer, the sample of CCL-1 exhibits the highest CO evolution rate of 7.04 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 in water under simulated sunlight illumination with a large specific surface area (129.15 m 2 g −1 ) and an appropriate CQDs content of 15.2 wt%, which is 12.8- and 11.2-fold higher than those of pristine LDH, pure CdS, and many previously reported LDH-based counterparts. A type-Ⅱ interfacial charge transfer mechanism is proposed, where electrons migrate rapidly from CdS to LDH with highly-interspersed CQDs as unhindered electron conduction bridges. The present work outlines a simple and controllable LDH-based heterojunction, which give rise to superior photocatalytic activity for CO 2 photoreduction.

Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit distinctive optical, electronic, and physicochemical properties, rendering them effective cocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic performance of light-absorbing materials. The interplay between CDs and substrates is pivotal in manipulating photogenerated charge separation, transfer, and redistribution, significantly influencing overall photocatalytic efficiency. This study introduces a novel electrostatic interaction strategy to interface positively charged CdS nanorods (CdS NRs) with negatively charged furfural-derived CDs. The resulting optimized composite (25-CDs@CdS NRs), showcases photocatalytic hydrogen production at a rate of 1076 μmol g −1 h −1 . Experimental analyses and theoretical simulations offer insights into the structure–activity relationship, underscoring the crucial role of enhanced electrostatic interaction between CDs and CdS NRs in facilitating efficient charge transfer, activating reaction sites, and improving reaction kinetics. This research establishes an adaptable strategy for integrating CDs with metal-based semiconductors, opening new avenues for developing photocatalytic hybrid assemblies.

A molecularly-imprinted electrochemiluminescence sensor was constructed for the determination of fenpropathrin (FPT) by molecular imprinting technology. In this sensing platform, the introduction of CdS@MWCNTs significantly enhanced the initial ECL signal of the luminol-O 2 system. Specifically, MWCNTs was used as a carrier to adsorb more CdS, in which CdS acted as a co-reaction promoter for luminescence. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) containing specific recognition sites of FPT was used as the material for selective recognition. With increasing amount of FPT the ECL signal decreased. Under the optimum conditions, the ECL response was linearly related to the logarithm of FPT concentration. The developed ECL sensor allowed for sensitive determination of FPT and exhibited a wide linear range from 1.0 × 10 − 10 mol L − 1 to 1.0 × 10 − 6 mol L − 1 . The limit of detection was 3.3 × 10 − 11 mol L − 1 (S/ N = 3). It can be used for the detection of FPT in vegetable samples.

The pathogenic bacteria induced foodborne disease has been detrimental to public health worldwide. Herein, the peroxidase (POD)-like Fe 3 O 4 /MWCNTs@Mo-CDs (FMMC) nanozyme was applied for the detection of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). The E. coli aptamer was conjugated with the surface of the FMMC, which effectively enhanced the POD-like activity attributing to the higher affinity to the substrate, and then specific capture of E. coli in food matrices, leading to the reduction of POD-like activity. Therefore, a robust and facile colorimetric aptasensor was developed for detecting E. coli with a wide linear range of 10 1 –10 6 CFU/mL, low LOQ of 10 1 CFU/mL and LOD of 0.978 CFU/mL. The aptasensor demonstrated the satisfied selectivity for E. coli compared to the other strains. This method possessed the potential application for fast in situ screening of foodborne pathogens in food products.
