Poly(quaternary ammonium salt-epoxy) grafted onto Ce doped ZnO composite: An enhanced and durable antibacterial agent

Dangge Gao,Jiahao Zhang,Bin Lyu,Leihong Lyu,Jianzhong Ma,Lintao Yang

The composite after referred to as P(DMDAAC-AGE)/(Ce-ZnO) was prepared via free radical polymerization by polymer including quaternary ammonium salt and epoxy group which grafted onto the surface of Ce-ZnO. ZnO nanorods, Ce-ZnO nanorods, P(DMDAAC-AGE), P(DMDAAC-AGE)/ZnO composites, P(DMDAAC-AGE)/(Ce-ZnO) composites and commercial antimicrobials were respectively treated on the cotton fabrics and their biological properties were investigated. There is a synergistic effect between Ce-ZnO and N + from the polymer in the fabric treated with P(DMDAAC-AGE)/(Ce-ZnO) composite so that it had a better antibacterial activity than pure polymer and pure Ce-ZnO. The antimicrobial rate of fabric treated with P(DMDAAC-AGE)/(Ce-ZnO) composite could reach up to 96%. And in order to investigate the durable ability, the fabric was washed multiple times to simulate the daily use washing. The result showed that the fabric still gave a superior antibacterial performance after 11 cycles (the equivalent of 55 times house laundering). Simultaneously, the differences in the amount of P(DMDAAC-AGE)/(Ce-ZnO) composite deposited on the fibers after washing were also investigated.

An injectable Ce–MnCo LDH nanozyme gel with cascade catalytic activity for acute radiation proctitis in rats

Aguo Cheng,Yixin Yu,Jing Ding,Shuhao Sun,Peng Li,Rong Sun,Kelong Fan

Acute radiation proctitis (ARP) is a common complication of pelvic radiotherapy driven by direct DNA damage and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced oxidative stress. Currently, effective clinical treatments that can systematically intervene in ARP are lacking. In this study, we developed an injectable, multicenter cascade nanozyme gel (Ce–MnCo LDH gel) for intrarectal administration to combat radiation-induced intestinal injury. By atomically integrating cerium (Ce) into the lattice of manganese-cobalt layered double hydroxides (MnCo LDH), we constructed a complex multicenter electron transfer network, endowing the nanozyme with potent, broad-spectrum catalase-, superoxide dismutase-, and glutathione peroxidase-like activities that effectively neutralize various ROS. Ce–MnCo LDH gel exhibited good stability and local retention capacity, effectively alleviated radiation-induced oxidative damage, reduced DNA damage, protected mitochondrial function, and inhibited NF-κB-mediated inflammatory signaling. In the ARP rat model, intrarectal administration of Ce–MnCo LDH gel effectively alleviated radiation-induced injury. This platform restored the expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1 and Claudin-3) in epithelial cells, repaired the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier, and remodeled the immune microenvironment in damaged areas by regulating inflammatory factors. In summary, this study provides a promising therapeutic strategy for radiation-induced intestinal injury and other oxidative inflammatory diseases.

Redox on Mn-Ce interface and its effects on low temperature selective catalytic reduction for NOx removal

Fengyuan Liu,Junqi Li,Hong Yong Sohn,Chaoyi Chen,Jian Yang,Xudong Liu,Yuanpei Lan,Wei Zhang,Qin Wang,Li Liu

The objective of this work was to clearly elucidate the interactions on Mn-Ce interface and understand how they affect low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NO x removal. In this work, three Mn-Ce catalysts in similar particle size and morphology with different Mn-Ce interface areas were prepared. MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F had the tightest and largest amount of Mn-Ce interfaces compared with MnO 2 @CeO 2 -P and MnO 2 -CeO 2 -M, and also exhibited the highest NO conversion degree at 100–150 °C as well as the strongest activity of Mn species and lowest generation of N 2 O. The TG-DTG, XPS and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results proved the redox of Ce 4+ + Mn 3+ ↔ Ce 3+ + Mn 4+ on the Mn-Ce interface, and MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F had the highest Mn 4+ , Ce 3+ , O α concentrations. The results of the study on the redox reactions during the NH 3 -SCR process provided powerful evidence of the Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ recycles that are important for low temperature NH 3 -SCR process. Moreover, the Mn-Ce interface was directly proved to benefit the surface acid sites, redox ability, and activity of the adsorbed intermediates. Both the Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) reaction mechanisms were observed in the SCR reaction with prepared Mn-Ce materials, where “fast SCR” can be observed with MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F. Moreover, the Mn-Ce interface also lowers the activation energy of the low-temperature SCR process, with MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F having the lowest activation energy. The results from this work offered powerful evidences for the interactions of Mn/Ce redox at the Mn-Ce interface and elucidated clear understanding of the effects of Mn-Ce redox on low-temperature SCR process, which is expected to promote the NO x removal process.

Preparation of N and Ce Co-doped MIL-101(Fe) Heterogeneous Catalysts for Efficient Electro-Fenton Oxidation

Jiakang Wan,Ling Wang,Wentao Xu,Zehai Xu,Junsheng Yuan,Guoliang Zhang

Design and synthesis of high-efficiency and stable heterogeneous catalysts for the electro-Fenton process remain challenging. In this study, a co-doped Ce and N metal–organic framework MIL-101(Fe) heterogeneous catalyst (Ce/N-MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized by a facile one-step solvothermal method. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone played dual roles during the fabrication process, which not only acted as a nitrogen source for doping but also prevented MIL-101(Fe) molecules from aggregating and reinforcing the formation crystal with a complete polyhedral crystal shape. The introduction of Ce significantly enhanced the density of active sites and promoted the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle of the reaction system. Owing to the specific structure and properties, the rate of electron transfer in the catalytic process was significantly promoted. The synthesized Ce/N-MIL-101(Fe) catalyst exhibited a high degradation rate for dyes (>98%) with competitive stability and reusability. Moreover, compared with common electro-Fenton catalysts usually operated in a limited pH range of 3.0–6.0, the working pH range of Ce/N-MIL-101(Fe) was widened up to 10.0. The design concept for producing abundant active sites with co-doping into frameworks can be extended to more heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalysts constituted by other porous materials.

Efficient defluoridation of water by utilizing nanosized Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides encapsulated inside porous polystyrene anion exchanger

Wenjing Chen,Huan Tang,Han Li,Yu Zhao,Xiaozhi Wang,Jiachao Chen,Zhihui Chen,Yaxian Zhu,Wenlan Yang

Fluoride contamination is a serious problem of global concern, and water decontamination from fluoride remains an imperative but also a challenging task. Recently, Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides (CFBOs) nanoparticles of sufficient hydroxyl group and high reactivity have exhibited unique advantages for specific fluoride elimination. Unfortunately, they are difficult to apply directly in scale-up water treatment due to their ultrafine nature. Herein, we fabricated a novel polymer-based Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides nanocomposite, i.e., CFBOs@201, by co-precipitation of Ce/Fe oxides nanoparticles inside a porous polystyrene anion exchanger D201. The material characterization results confirmed that CFBOs were successfully immobilized inside the pores of D201 with nanoscale and micro crystalline nature, and the shielding effect of the host D201 significantly improved the chemical stability of CFBOs against pH variation (3–12). As compared with cerium and ferric (hydr)oxides nanocomposites (HCO@201 and HFO@201) and its host D201, CFBOs@201 exhibited superior capacity and better selectivity for fluoride adsorption. Thanks to the inner-sphere complexation between immobilized CFBOs and fluoride, the concomitant competing anions exerted negligible effect on the defluoridation efficiency of CFBOs@201. Fluoride uptake onto CFBOs@201 agreed well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 65.99 mg/g. The exhausted CFBOs@201 could be efficiently regenerated by a simple alkaline treatment for cyclic utilization with constant defluorination performance. Fixed-bed assays demonstrated that the encapsulating of CFBOs nanoparticles enhanced the effective treatment capacity of CFBOs@201 by 10–12 times over the host D201 irrespective of whether synthetic wastewater or mine drainage was the feeding solution. The above results verified that CFBOs@201 is a new kind of efficient defluoridation adsorbent with practical application prospect.

Preparation and Performance of Carbon-Based Ce-Mn Catalysts for Efficient Degradation of Acetone at Low Temperatures

Tong Li,Zhibo Wang,Yue Shi,Xiaolong Yao

Based on the porous carbon material from citric acid residue, catalysts of different Ce-Mn ratios were prepared with incipient-wetness impregnation (IWI) to delve into their acetone-degrading performance and relevant mechanisms. When the Ce-Mn molar ratio is 0.8, the prepared catalyst Ce0.8-Mn/AC shows abundant and uniformly dispersed Mn and Ce particles on the surface. The content of Mn and Ce on the Ce0.8-Mn/AC surface reaches 5.64% and 0.75%, respectively. At the acetone concentration of 238 mg/m3(100 ppm), the laws of acetone degradation in different catalysts at different catalyzing temperatures and with various oxygen concentrations were studied, and we found that the rate of acetone degradation by Ce0.8-Mn/AC can exceed 90% at 250 °C. Cerium oxide and manganese oxide are synergistic in the catalytic degradation of acetone. Adding cerium to manganese-based catalysts can increase the oxygen migration rate in the catalysts and thus raise the reduction rate of lattice oxygen in manganese oxide. The results offer new ideas and approaches for the efficient and comprehensive utilization of bio-fermentation by-products, and for the development of cheap and high degradation performance catalysts for acetone.Keywords:acetone;Ce0.8-Mn/AC;efficient degradation;low temperatures

Construction of Ce-MOF@COF hybrid nanostructure with controllable thickness for the electrochemical sensitive detection of metol

Xiaoxian Hu,Jing Qian,Juan Yang,Xiaomin Hu,Yanjiao Zou,Nianjun Yang

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a newly emerging kind of porous material, have gained extensive attention due to their fascinating structural features. However, the superiority of COFs as electrochemical sensing materials has not yet been adequately explored. Herein, a new type of core–shell metal–organic framework (MOF)@COF composites are synthesized through in situ growth of TAPB-DMTP-COF on the pre-synthesized Ce-BDC core. The thickness of the COF shell can be controlled to 20–50 nm by adjusting the Ce-MOF mass. It is found that the obtained MOF@COF composite possesses a larger electrochemical active area and faster electron transfer kinetic than its single component. As a case application of this composite, it has been employed as a sensing material for voltammetric detection of metol, where a linear range from 0.1 − 200 μM and a detection limit of 30 nM have been obtained. This study provides a new strategy to synthesize COF-based electrode materials as well as to explore their electrochemical properties and applications.

Enhanced PMS Activation by Highly Dispersed Mn-Ce Bimetallic Oxide on Carbon Nanotubes for Degradation of Phenol

Jing Wang,Quanfeng Wang,Pei Gao,Da Sun,Libo Jin,Li Ma,Lan Yang,Jujiao Zhao

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is an intriguing technology for refractory organic pollutant removal in wastewater treatment. Herein, a highly dispersed Mn-Ce bimetallic oxide on carbon nanotubes (MCC) was synthesized and applied to catalyze PMS for the degradation of phenol. The material was well characterized using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), N2adsorption–desorption isotherms, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The synthesized MCC showed superior activity for PMS activation. Thekvalue of phenol removal with MCC is 0.135 min−1, which is greatly superior to that of CNT (6.17 × 10−5min−1) and Mn-Ce bimetallic oxide (3.18 × 10−4min−1). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), along with radical quenching experiments, revealed that the activation of PMS by MCC for phenol degradation involves both radical and non-radical reaction pathways. Moreover, a synergic effect between Mn-Ce bimetallic oxide and CNT was identified to be responsible for the outstanding catalytic activity. Keywords:PMS activation;Mn-Ce bimetallic oxide;CNT;synergic effect

Preparation of Ce-Ag bimetallic modified biochar composite for the efficient removal of sulfathiazole and its mechanism

Shixing He,Lieshan Wu,Yalin Zeng,Bing Jia,Liuling Liang

Modified biochar (Ce-Ag-BC) was successfully prepared by using Camellia oleifera shell and doping with cerium (Ce) and silver (Ag). Through the results of BET, SEM, XRD , FTIR, and XPS, Ce and Ag were successfully embedded on biochar and participated in the sulfathiazole (STZ) adsorption. After being modified, high adsorption capacity of STZ on Ce-Ag-BC was observed. The maximum adsorption amount of STZ on Ce-Ag-BC was 261.84 mg/g, which was increased by more than six times compared to raw biochar (BC, 42.41 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics and isotherm on Ce-Ag-BC could be better fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively, indicating that the adsorption is mainly controlled by chemisorption and can be described as a monolayer process. The STZ adsorption process on Ce-Ag-BC is a spontaneously endothermic reaction. Besides, the adsorption mechanism on Ce-Ag-BC mainly involves pore filling, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding , and electrostatic attraction.

Visual detection of vitamin C in fruits and vegetables using UiO-66 loaded Ce-MnO2 mimetic oxidase

Haiping Zhao,Ziyi Zhang,Yong Han,Weixia Yang,Wenzhi Tang,Tianli Yue,Zhonghong Li

A nanocomposite (UiO-66/Ce-MnO 2 ) was fabricated by combining UiO-66 with cerium-doped manganese dioxide (Ce-MnO 2 ) for colorimetric detecting vitamin C (Vc). Compared with traditional artificial enzymes, the as-synthesized UiO-66/Ce-MnO 2 were simple to prepare and did not require the participation of other active substances. The doping of cerium increased the oxygen vacancies and the UiO-66 as a carrier improved the dispersibility. The formation of superoxide anion (O 2 − ) and the inside Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox couples of UiO-66/Ce-MnO 2 endowed UiO-66/Ce-MnO 2 with a high catalytic capability, which could catalytically oxidize 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxidation state TMB (oxTMB) without H 2 O 2 , accompanying with color change and a prominent peak at 652 nm in UV–vis spectra. Based on the inhibitory effects of Vc on catalytic oxidation of TMB, detection of Vc can be achieved, exhibiting a linear relationship in the concentration of 1.13–17.01 μmol L −1 with a low detection limit of 65.82 nmol L −1 . This system can also be detected by smartphone, the linear detection range is 12.47–22.67 μmol L −1 . Vc contents in fruits and vegetables detected by the sensor were in good agreement with the 2, 4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine colorimetry method ( P  > 0.05), indicating a reliable sensor for Vc detection.

Efficient formation of ZIF-8 promoted by DBU for the preparation of ZnO and Ce/ZnO nanomaterials

Tingting Chen,Yingjie Xu,Bin Chen,Huiquan Xiao

In this work, the efficient preparation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) from Zn 2+ and 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) promoted by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) was presented. The mechanism obtained from NMR, MS, DFT calculations, and conductivity shows that [DBUH][2-MI] ionic liquid formed in-situ from proton transfer between DBU and 2-MI can ionize 2-MI to [2-MI] - and form electrostatic interaction between Zn 2+ and [2-MI] - , resulting in the efficient self-assembly of Zn 2+ and 2-MI to form ZIF-8. Moreover, the effect of the amount of DBU on ZIF-8 indicates that too much DBU will cause excessive deprotonation of 2-MI, leading to agglomerate of ZIF-8. Accordingly, the optimal ratio to form ZIF-8 is n(DBU): n(2-MI): n(Zn 2+ ) = 2: 25: 1.25, which is also employed to prepare cerium-containing ZIF-8. Moreover, ZnO and Ce/ZnO nanomaterials are prepared by using ZIF-8 and cerium-containing ZIF-8 as precursors respectively, and their structure and morphology are characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM. Interestingly, Ce content in Ce/ZnO obtained by EDS spectrum is basically consistent with the actual doping amount, indicating that DBU can effectively control the doping of Ce in ZIF-8. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation ability of ZnO and Ce/ZnO for Rhodamine B under visible light and sunlight is investigated in detail.

Deactivation characteristics of Ce-modified Cu-based carbon materials for catalytic wet air oxidation of phenol wastewater

Guoqiang Li,Siqi Chai,Guojie Zhang,Jun Liu,Yongfa Zhang,Yongkang Lv,Ying Wang,Yuqiong Zhao

In this paper, Ce-modified Cu-based carbon materials (Cu-Ce/AC) were prepared by impregnation method using walnut shell as the carbon precursor, Cu-ammonia solution as Cu source and Ce as modifier. The catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) degradation of phenol wastewater was carried out in a self-assembled fixed-bed reactor. The stability of Cu-Ce/AC catalyst under different pH conditions was studied. This study combines XRD, BET, FT-IR, ICP-OES and XPS characterization techniques to study the main reasons for the deactivation of Cu-Ce/AC catalysts. The reaction mechanism of Cu-Ce/AC catalytic wet air oxidation degradation of phenol was clarified. The result indicates that although phenol was completely converted in the CWAO process, the acidic intermediate product produced were difficult to completely degraded. Therefore, the pH of the solution gradually decreased. In acidic environment, the interaction between active component Cu and carbon carrier is weak, resulting in a large amount of metal leaching into the solution. As a result, the COD conversion gradually decreases. The alkaline environment can effectively slow down the leaching of catalyst Cu while maintaining its high catalytic activity . In addition, the incompletely degraded intermediate products are easy to accumulate and deposit on the Cu-Ce/AC surface, block the micropores and cover the surface-active sites, which reduces the catalyst activity. The study also found that there is a redox cycle between Cu + , Cu 2+ Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ during phenol degradation, which enables Cu and Ce to form a strong interaction. The redox cycle can also promote the formation of oxygen vacancy (h + ), O 2 − ·, and HO·, making the degradation of phenol more thorough. At the same time, the mutual conversion between metal lattice oxygen and surface chemisorbed oxygen can generate high concentration of oxygen defect sites, which can improve the oxygen storage capacity of Cu-Ce/AC. These oxygen vacancies also provide more reactive sites to further promote adsorption and catalytic oxidation degradation of phenol and intermediate products.
