A room-temperature ppb-level H2S sensor based on MoO3/CuO/g-C3N4 via a simple synthesis

Cheng Feng,Congting Zhang,Chang Xu,Shuang Lin,Baohua Zhang,Huanxing Wu,Zheng Zhang,Xinming Guo,Haineng Bai,Fuqiang Guo

The detection of H 2 S for biomarkers or special occasions often requires a lower detection limit. In this work, the ppb-level H 2 S sensor based on MoO 3 /CuO/g-C 3 N 4 (MCC) was presented by a simple method. The characterized results show that MCC-2 possesses a larger specific surface area, and has more adsorbed oxygen and oxygen vacancy compared to MoO 3 and MoO 3 /CuO. The gas-sensitive test results show that the response of the MCC-2 sensor to 1000 ppb H 2 S is up to 8.24 at room temperature , which is 1.31 times of MoO 3 /CuO (6.28). More importantly, the theoretical detection limit of the MCC-2 sensor is as low as 1.1 ppb, which is the lowest in the recent H 2 S sensor. In addition, the MCC-2 sensor has reliable repeatability, excellent selectivity to H 2 S, and still maintains a high response after continuous test for 5 weeks. Simultaneously, the MCC-2 sensor also keeps an outstanding response at high relative humidity. The excellent gas sensing properties are due to the larger specific surface area that can enable more gases to be adsorbed on the material surface. In addition, the oxygen vacancy reduces the energy required to adsorb the target gas and the formed heterojunctions by MoO 3 /CuO/g-C 3 N 4 expedite carrier migration.

Cu/CuO-Graphene Foam with Laccase-like Activity for Identification of Phenolic Compounds and Detection of Epinephrine

Zhu Junlun,Cui Qian,Wen Wei,Zhang Xiuhua,Wang Shengfu

Although great progress has been made in the advancement of nanozymes, most of the studies focus on mimicking peroxidase, oxidase, and catalase, while relatively few studies are used to mimic laccase. However, the use of nanomaterials to mimic laccase activity will have great potential in environmental and industrial catalysis. Herein, Cu/CuO-graphene foam with laccase-like activity was designed for the identification of phenolic compounds and the detection of epinephrine. In a typical experiment, the formation mechanism of Cu/CuO-graphene foam was investigated during the pyrolysis process by thermogravimetric-mass spectrometry. As a laccase mimic, Cu/CuO-graphene foam exhibited excellent catalytic activity with a Michaelis-Menten constant and a maximum initial velocity of 0.17 mmol/L and 0.012 µmol·L −1 ·s −1 , respectively. Based on this principle, Cu/CuO-graphene foam nanozyme could differentially catalyze phenolic compounds and 4-aminoantipyrine for simultaneous identification of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, a colorimetric sensing platform was fabricated for the quantitative determination of epinephrine, showing linear responses to epinephrine in the range of 3 µg/mL to 20 µg/mL with the detection limit of 0.2 µg/mL. The proposed Cu/CuO-graphene foam nanozyme could be applied for the identification of phenolic compounds and the detection of epinephrine, showing great potential applications for environmental monitoring, biomedical sensing, and food detection fields.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by CuO-Fe2O3/MXene composite for atrazine degradation: Performance, coexisting matter influence and mechanism

Peng Xu,Peng Wang,Xiang Li,Rui Wei,Xiaojing Wang,Chunyan Yang,Tianyao Shen,Tong Zheng,Guangshan Zhang

CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /MXene was fabricated using a rapid microwave hydrothermal method and used for the enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and atrazine (ATZ) degradation. The ATZ degradation rate could reach up to nearly 100% within 60 min at pH = 6.4, with low dosage for CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /5% MXene (0.1 g‧L -1 ) and PMS (0.37 mM). Experimental results and DFT calculations showed that coexisting matter had little influence on ATZ degradation at low concentrations, indicating the excellent anti-interference capability of the system. Circulation and interaction of ≡Fe(III)/≡Fe(II) and ≡Cu(II)/≡Cu(I) produced SO 4 •- and •OH, O* and SO 5 •- could participate in the formation of 1 O 2 . Then, ATZ degradation pathways, including dealkylation, dichlorination-hydroxylation, alkyl hydroxylation, alkyl oxidation, olefination, and deamination-hydroxylation processes, were proposed based on DFT calculations and ESI-QTOF-MS/MS data. QSAR analysis illustrated that most intermediates were more environmentally friendly than ATZ. This study developed novel materials with superior catalytic performance for elimination of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater.

Burning rate modulation for composite propellants by interfacial control of Al@AP with precise catalysis of CuO

Lyu Jie-Yao,Yang Su-Lan,Wu Shixi,Tang Gen,Yang Wenming,Yan Qi-Long

Burning rate modulation is a critical but challenging technology for solid propellants’ design. Great efforts have been made to synthesize and utilize catalysts to modify the pressure exponent ( n ), but poor catalytic efficiency and lower energy level of conventional catalysts limit their further applications. In this research, interfacial control of Al@AP together with precise catalysis of CuO is represented for the purpose of pressure exponent reduction and combustion performance improvement. The core-shell structured Al@AP and Al@AP/CuO composites were prepared and applied into HTPB/Al/AP composite propellants. These prepared propellants have the same formula but different micro-structures of ingredients, leading to varied combustion performance, in terms of the burning rates, combustion wave structures, flame spectra, agglomeration processes of Al particles and condensed combustion products . The investigation results show that by using interfacial control of Al@AP and precise catalysis of CuO, the n of involved propellants over 1–4 MPa can be greatly decreased from 0.42 to 0.21 and the agglomeration of Al could be effectively inhibited. In addition, propellants based on Al@AP and Al@AP/CuO interfacial controls of this research are summarized and compared together with those based on Al@RDX published recently, to present overall characteristics of interfacial control techniques, which could lead to the development of new smart controllable propellants.

Sensitive detection of dextromethorphan hydrobromide based on portable Raman spectrometer and CuO@AgNPs nano composite SERS substrate

Bin Yang,Jia Liu,Fengming Zhang,Yuting Wang,Xin Liu,Shiyue Niu,Yue Yuan,Shuyun Bi

A highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy approach was established for the detection of dextromethorphan hydrobromide (DXM) utilizing nano CuO modified silver nanoparticles (CuO@AgNPs) as substrate. Ultraviolet visible spectra (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterized the synthesized CuO@AgNPs. UV-vis and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) were adopted to investigate the interaction between DXM and CuO@AgNPs. The optimal experimental conditions (the dosages of CuO@AgNPs and NaCl as well as mixing time) were explored. The enhancement factor (EF) was 1.71 × 10 6 . The linear relationship between SERS intensity and the concentration of DXM in the range of 67 – 1000 nmol L −1 was obtained as I SERS = 25.81 c + 40398.77, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 2.12 nmol L −1 (S/N = 3). The interference of K + , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Ca 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , glucose, HSA, L-tryptophan, soluble starch and ibuprofen were investigated. The method was successfully applied to test DXM in serum samples. The recovery was 99.06% – 101.51% with the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.74% – 3.87%.

Efficient solar thermal energy utilization and storage based on phase change materials stabilized by MOF@CuO composites

Dandan Yan,Min Li

Solar thermal conversion technology employing phase change composites is an available strategy for solar thermal energy utilization and storage. In this work, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF)-based phase change composites were successfully constructed through vacuum impregnation method. The stearic acid (SA) was served as phase change materials , and the SA-modified MOF (HS) with CuO derived from MOF (HS@CuO composites) was assembled to be support materials, which composed the SA/HS@CuO phase change composites. HS@CuO composites could well prevent the SA leakage over phase change point and endowed the phase change composites outstanding form stability (SA loading rate: 71.8 %) and thermal storage ability (ΔH m : 158.24 J/g). Furthermore, the SA/HS@CuO possessed greatly strengthened thermal conductivity (improved by 3.8 times over SA) and extraordinary solar thermal conversion performance (η: 95.9 %). These results powerfully suggest that the innovative phase change composites own promising potentials in not only solar energy utilization and development but also thermal storage and management fields.

A new highly active La2O3–CuO–MgO catalyst for the synthesis of cumyl peroxide by catalytic oxidation

HanShuang Liu,KaiJun Wang,XiaoYan Cao,JiaXin Su,Zhenggui Gu

In this study, different magnesium, copper, lanthanide single metal, and composite multimetal oxide catalysts were prepared via the coprecipitation route for the aerobic oxidation of cumene into cumene hydroperoxide. All catalysts were characterized using several analytical techniques, including XRD, SEM, EDS, FT-IR, BET, CO2-TPD, XPS, and TG-DTG. La2O3–CuO–MgO shows higher oxidation activity and yield than other catalysts. The results of XRD and SEM studies show that the copper and magnesium particles in the catalyst are smaller in size and have a distribution over a larger area due to the introduction of the lanthanum element. The CO2-TPD results confirmed that the catalyst has more alkali density and alkali strength, which can excite active sites and prevent the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide. XPS results show that due to the promotional effect of La2O3, there are more lattice and active oxygen species in the catalyst, which can effectively utilize the lattice defects under the strong interaction between metal oxides for rapid adsorption and activation, thus improving the oxidation performance. Besides, La2O3–CuO–MgO exhibits good stability and crystalline structure due to its high oxygen mobility inhibiting coking during the cycle stability test. Finally, the possible reaction pathway and promotional mechanism on La2O3–CuO–MgO in cumene oxidation are proposed. We expect this study to shed more light on the nature of the surface-active site(s) of La2O3–CuO–MgO catalyst for cumene oxidation and the development of heterogeneous catalysts with high activity in a wide range of applications.

Revealing the heterogeneous activation mechanism of peroxydisulfate by CuO: the critical role of surface-binding organic substrates

Tao Zhou,Yi Han,Wei Xiang,Chen Wang,Xiaohui Wu,Juan Mao,Mingjie Huang

Heterogeneous catalytic activation mechanisms of peroxydisulfate (PDS) by transition metal oxides are generally attributed to the interactions between catalysts and PDS, however, the role of the co-existed organic substrate was largely overlooked in the past studies. In this work, phenol was selected as the target organic pollutant in a CuO/PDS system to evaluate its deep-seated role in participating in the effective activation of PDS. First, optimized reaction conditions as pH of 6.0, CuO of 5.96 g·L −1 and PDS of 2.5 mM were obtained by the response surface methodology (RSM) with a phenol degradation efficiency of 84.0%. It was further found that pre-adsorption of phenol or PDS led to obviously different performances in the phenol degradation with/without the radical scavengers. Two different activation pathways of PDS, i.e., the non-radical pathway mediated by surface deprotonated phenol to generate 1 O 2 and the radical pathway mediated by structural Cu(I)/Cu(II) to produce SO 4 − , were therefore proposed, and the former was predominant in the CuO/PDS/phenol system. In addition, HCO 3 − and HPO 4 2− could strongly inhibit the phenol degradation while Cl − and NO 3 − only performed negligible effects. NaOH washing could regenerate the surface hydroxyl groups and recover the catalytic ability of CuO. The result of this study integrated the interactions among the catalyst, oxidant and substrate, providing new insights into environmental-friendly PDS activation processes.

Easily Regenerated CuO/γ-Al2O3 for Persulfate-Based Catalytic Oxidation: Insights into the Deactivation and Regeneration Mechanism

Jun Wang,Bin Li,Yang Li,Xiaobin Fan,Fengbao Zhang,Guoliang Zhang,Yuanzhi Zhu,Wenchao Peng

In this work, γ-Al2O3-supported CuO (c-CuO/Al2O3) materials are successfully synthesized using a novel impregnation–precipitation–decomposition method. The obtained c-CuO/Al2O3 catalyst shows excellent catalytic activities for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation with sodium persulfate (PDS) as an oxidant. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies indicate that PDS activation is a combined mechanism involving both free radical and nonfree radical pathways. In a continuous large-scale degradation process, about 1.78 L of 20 ppm BPA can be completely removed within 480 min. Although c-CuO/Al2O3 can be deactivated after several reaction cycles, the catalytic activity can be regenerated after simple aerobic calcination. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman analysis confirm that the deactivation of c-CuO/Al2O3 should be attributed to the conversion of Cu(II) to Cu(I). The aerobic calcination could oxidize Cu(I) back to Cu(II), thus recovering the catalytic activity. In addition, the density functional technology (DFT) and temperature-programmed oxidation (TPD) results reveal that γ-Al2O3 can not only serve as a carrier to anchor the CuO particles but also can adsorb and activate PDS by introducing more basic sites on the surface. c-CuO/Al2O3 has high activity and can be regenerated easily, thus having great potential applications for wastewater treatment.

Fabrication of a Z-scheme MoS2/CuO heterojunction for enhanced 2-mercaptobenzothiazole degradation activity and mechanism insight

Yunqi Wang,Xu Tang,Zhixiang Liu,Zhi Liu,Yongsheng Yan,Boting Yang,Zhi Zhu

A Z-scheme MoS2/CuO photocatalyst is successfully developed using a hydrothermal and calcination method, which has excellent activity (96%) in the degradation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) under visible light irradiation. The reaction rate constants of MBT degradation on the MoS2/CuO heterojunction are 8 and 6 times higher than those of pure MoS2 and the original CuO, respectively. The as-prepared photocatalyst was characterized using XRD, SEM, XPS and electrochemistry measurement. From the experimental results, the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly ascribed to the formation of a Z-scheme heterostructure between MoS2 nanosheets and flower spherical CuO, effectively improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. What is remarkable is that the Z-scheme electron transfer process leads to a large accumulation of photogenerated electrons and holes, improving the oxidation and reduction properties of CuO and MoS2. Moreover, an intensive study of the mechanism has proved that holes, superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals are all active substances in the degradation process. This study opens up a new way to devise novel and highly efficient MoS2-based photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by coupling of photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate oxidation processes using CuO-BiVO4 heterogeneous catalyst

Xin Chen,Jiabin Zhou,Yi Chen,Ying Zhou,Lidan Ding,Hong Liang,Xi Li

In this study, we synthesized CuO modified BiVO 4 composite (CuO-BiVO 4 ) and used it to construct a novel coupling system, in which two processes of photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation processes were integrated together to synergistic remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TC−HCl). XRD , XPS , FESEM , EDS, PL and UV–vis DRS techniques were applied for characterization of the catalyst features. CASTEP procedure of MS software was employed to calculate the electronic structure of the catalyst. The catalytic performance of CuO-BiVO 4 + Vis + PMS system was investigated under impact of different variables such as CuO loading amount, pH, PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, temperature and co-existing ions. Compared with the individual photocatalysis or peroxymonosulfate oxidation process, the catalytic performance of the coupling system was significantly improved. Under visible light irradiation, 100 mL of 80 mg/L TC−HCl solution was completely degraded using 2 mM PMS activated by a CuO-BiVO 4 composite in 50 min without adjust pH, and the system synergistic index reached 3.04. The improved catalytic activity is due to the effective separation of photogenerated electrons-holes and the availability of more activation PMS sites. After five cycling experiments, the degradation rates of TC−HCl were reduced slightly to 94 %, which indicated the catalysts exhibited excellent reusability and stability for its practical applications. Active species trapping experiments and ESR tests confirmed that SO 4 ·− ,·OH, h VB + , O 2 ·− and 1 O 2 worked together for the TC−HCl degradation. Furthermore, the possible reaction mechanism of the coupling system was proposed, and the degradation intermediates of TC−HCl were identified by LC MS. In conclusion, integration of CuO-BiVO 4 , Vis and PMS exhibited an excellent performance for TC−HCl degradation within 50 min reaction, which could be introduced as an effective and promising method for the wastewater treatment .
