The deterioration degree of pomegranate husk, aroma components and antioxidant contents of pomegranate juice have important effects on postharvest storage quality and vary among cultivars. At the present study, ‘Tunisia soft seed’, ‘Jingpitian’ and ‘Lishanhong’ cultivars from Shaanxi, China was used as raw materials. They were stored at 4 ± 0.5 °C and 85–90% relative humidity for 90 d which aimed to elucidate storability differences. Both husk changes and storage quality were monitored. Our results showed that ‘Tunisia soft seed’ maintained a good microstructure in husk and possessed a high value of soluble solids/titratable acid ratio and high contents of antioxidants (total phenols , total flavonoids , total anthocyanins , vitamin C) but suffered from high moisture and volatile aroma compounds losses. ‘Jingpitian’ exhibited lower moisture and aroma compounds losses, but showed significant husk browning, micro-cracks widening, lenticels blocking and wax layer disintegrating. ‘Lishanhong’ showed similar fruit quality characteristics to ‘jingpitian’. These findings will contribute to elucidating the appearance change, microstructure and fruit quality differences among cultivars in postharvest pomegranates during cold storage and providing help for enterprises to discriminate and select varieties suitable for fresh sales or storage.

The reported ionic liquid (IL)-based magnetic effervescent tablets are a result of direct addition of ILs and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). In effervescent reaction-enhanced microextraction procedures, the dissociation between ILs and MNPs easily leads to loss of ILs due to aqueous solubility, thereby decreasing the extraction efficiency. Herein, we attached a hydrophilic IL ([BMIM]Br) onto the surface of NiFe2O4@SiO2@polyaniline (NiFe2O4@SiO2@PANI-IL) to prepare novel core–shell-like multi-layer nanocomposites. Magnetic effervescent tablets were composed of Na2CO3 as an alkaline source, tartaric acid as an acidic source and as-synthesized nanocomposites as an extractant. The nanocomposites were used in an effervescent reaction-enhanced magnetic solid-phase extraction (ERMSE) for the extraction of four organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in fruit juices prior to HPLC-DAD detection. Under optimized conditions, this method provided low limits of detection (0.06–0.17 μg L−1), high recoveries (80.6–97.3%) and excellent precision (1.1–5.2%) for OPP quantification in five fruit juices. Notably, the three-layer core–shell nanocomposites were efficiently recycled for at least eight extraction cycles with a recovery loss of <10%. The novelty of this study lies in: (1) for the first time, the ILs-based hybrid magnetic nanocomposites were prepared with appropriate pore size/volume and more active sites for OPPs; (2) the combination of the nanocomposites with effervescent tablets realizes rapid dispersion of CO2 bubbles, and convenient magnetic separation/collection into one synchronous step; and (3) due to there being no requirement of electrical power, it is feasible for use in field conditions. Thus, the ERMSE method has excellent potential for conventional monitoring of trace-level OPPs in complex fruit juice matrices.

Phytopathogenic fungi pose a critical threat to global food security through substantial pre- and post-harvest crop losses, intensified by climate change and fungicide resistance. To address this, we synthesized low-concentration chitosan–inorganic oxide nanocomposites (CS-SiO2, CS-ZnO, CS-CuO) via ionic gelation, a green and scalable method. Comprehensive characterization (DLS, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM) confirmed nanocomposite formation, CS-SiO2exhibited uniform particle sizes (200–250 nm), while CS-CuO showed slightly larger particles, all with excellent dispersity. Zeta potential analysis confirmed strong colloidal stability, with pure chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) displaying a surface charge of +12.9 mV, while all nanocomposites retained positive charges, enhancing adhesion to negatively charged fungal membranes. In vitro antifungal assays againstAlternaria alternata,Botrytis cinerea,Colletotrichum graminicola, andFusarium graminearumdemonstrated hierarchical efficacy: CS-CuO > CS-ZnO > CS-SiO2, with CS-CuO achieving >80% growth inhibition against B. cinerea and A. alternata. SEM revealed severe hyphal damage and spore collapse in CS-CuO-treated fungi, attributed to synergistic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and chitosan-mediated membrane disruption. In vivo trials on B. cinerea-infected apples showed CS-CuO reduced lesion area by 81% and elevated host defense markers, including a 1.5-fold increase in total phenolic content and higher DPPH radical scavenging activity compared to controls. These nanocomposites, particularly CS-CuO, offer a sustainable, dual-action solution direct antifungal activity and enhanced host resilience while minimizing environmental impact. By integrating scalable synthesis, eco-compatibility, and efficacy, this work advances chitosan–inorganic oxide nanocomposites as viable alternatives to conventional fungicides, with immediate potential for agricultural and postharvest applications.

Due to their abundance and biodegradability, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have been increasingly used in food packaging, but there are still some limitations for the development and industrial application of CNF-based packaging films, such as low water resistance and high manufacturing costs. In response to these issues, we developed a simple and sustainable strategy to produce cost-effective and multifunctional CNF-based composite films from bast fibers. CNFs were directly isolated from bast fibers via ball milling and high-pressure homogenization and then the long CNFs derived from flax fibers (FCNFs) were mixed with the short CNFs derived from jute fibers (JCNFs); the resultant JCNF−FCNF film exhibited enhanced barrier properties to oxygen (oxygen permeability of 1310 cm 3 ∙μm/m 2 ∙day∙atm) and water vapor (water vapor permeability of 5399 g∙μm/m 2 ∙day∙kPa) and superior antioxidant, UV blocking, water-resistant and mechanical properties. The high barrier properties of JCNF−FCNF film were mainly attributed to the abundant physical interwinding between mixed CNFs as well as the natural hydrophobicity of residual lignin in the film. Compared with both neat JCNF and neat FCNF coatings, the JCNF−FCNF coating was more effective in delaying browning of banana peels. This work offers a novel strategy to fabricate sustainable CNF-based composite films for fruit preservation.

The development of multifunctional and biodegradable composite films represents a promising approach to enhancing food preservation. Herein, a chitosan-based composite film was designed by incorporating bacterial cellulose (as a mechanical reinforcement agent) and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HY2–1 lipopeptides (as an antimicrobial component), with the aim of enabling its potential application in food packaging. A systematic investigation was conducted to evaluate the influence of varying HY2–1 lipopeptides concentrations on the key performance metrics of the composite films, including mechanical strength, barrier properties, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activity, and practical efficacy in fruit preservation. The results revealed a concentration-dependent enhancement in functional properties of the composite films with increasing of HY2–1 lipopeptides incorporation. At the optimal HY2–1 lipopeptides concentration of 2.4 mg/mL, the composite film demonstrated significantly improved antioxidant activity, with DPPH radical scavenging of 48.21% (8-fold that of the control) and ABTS radical scavenging of 60.73% (3-fold that of the control). Besides, the composite film exhibited significantly enhanced antimicrobial activities against a broad spectrum of pathogens, including Gram-positive bacteria ( Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus ), Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli ), and the fungal Penicillium digitatum , compared to the control film. Furthermore, the lipopeptides-incorporated composite film effectively preserved critical shelf-life indicators of citrus and strawberry under ambient storage conditions, including color retention, firmness maintenance, and nutritional content preservation, thereby demonstrating excellent practical preservation efficacy. Overall, this study designs a high-performance, fully bio-based composite film by integrating multifunctional lipopeptides into a chitosan matrix, presenting a potent and natural strategy to extend the shelf-life of perishable foods.

In this work, optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of Osmanthus fragrans (OF) fruit oils from four representative species of OF groups was firstly performed. A Box-Behnken design was applied to investigate and optimize the process variables. Among them, the specie of OF var. latifolius Makino (OFL) had the highest oil yield (18.53 %) by UAE under the optimal conditions with an ultrasound extraction time of 33 min, ultrasound temperature of 52 ℃ and liquid-to-solid ratio of 12 mL/g. Furthermore, the fatty acid composition, physicochemical characteristics, and antioxidant activity of OFL fruit oil extracts obtained through UAE and Soxhelet extraction (SE) were determined and compared. The results demonstrated that the oil yield and fatty acid composition between UAE and SE were similar, while the oil obtained by UAE displayed superior physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity . These findings suggest that UAE represents an effective method for OF fruit oil extraction.

A novel magnetic sorbent has been synthesized by co-polymerization of calixarene ionic liquid and mercaptan-modified Fe 3 O 4 particles. This material was used as a sorbent for dispersive solid phase extraction of trace-level flavonoids in the samples of bottled fruit juice and green tea without other pre-treatments. The experimental parameters were investigated and optimized. Coupled with high performance liquid chromatography, an analytical method was established and successfully applied to the determination of flavonoids in these beverages. The proposed method showed good linearity for the analytes with a correlation coefficient ( r ) > 0.9982, and detection limits for the flavonoids ranged 0.15–0.75 ng mL −1 were achieved. The proposed method has been used successfully to determine flavonoids in bottled fruit juice and green tea samples with satisfactory recoveries of 92.5–104.8% and relative standard deviations ≤ 5.2%. The results suggest that poly(calixarene ionic liquid) modified Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles can be used in the extraction of flavonoids in beverage samples.

Fruit ripening is accompanied by extensive reprogramming of secondary metabolism, which determines the antioxidant value of medicine-food homologous fruits.Ziziphus jujubaMill. cv. ‘Junzao’ (Junzao) is a high-quality cultivar rich in bioactive compounds, yet its stage-dependent metabolite accumulation and the corresponding antioxidant capacity remain poorly resolved. In this study, widely targeted metabolomics was combined with the quantification of total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC), and total triterpenoid (TTC) contents and with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical (ABTS) radical-scavenging assays to profile Junzao fruits at five developmental stages. A total of 2388 secondary metabolites were identified, with flavonoids and terpenoids representing the major classes. TPC and TFC were highest at the immature YG (young-fruit) stage, whereas TTC peaked at the BS (white-ripe) stage; all three decreased during subsequent ripening, consistent with the stronger DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging activities observed in early-stage fruits. Multivariate analyses revealed distinct metabolic profiles among developmental stages, and 2111 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified. K-means clustering resolved nine temporal accumulation patterns, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment indicated dynamic regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid metabolism, and triterpenoid-related pathways. Spearman correlation analyses further identified ten metabolites, comprising six flavonoids, three triterpenes, and one phenolic acid, that were strongly associated with antioxidant capacity (|r| ≥ 0.5,p< 0.05), highlighting their potential as biomarkers for quality evaluation. Overall, immature Junzao fruits exhibited superior antioxidant capacity, supporting their promise as functional-food ingredients and providing a basis for stage-specific harvesting and utilization.

As global attention to sustainable development continues to grow, plant dyes, as natural, renewable, and biodegradable biobased materials, are gradually becoming an ideal choice to replace traditional synthetic dyes due to their environmental friendliness, low toxicity, and sustainability. However, the application of plant dyes still faces challenges, including low extraction efficiency, poor dyeing performance, and the complexity and unclear nature of the dye components. This study presents a novel polyphenolic plant dye derived from the residues of Litsea cubeba fruits after essential oil extraction, and utilizes green deep eutectic solvent (DES) technology for efficient extraction and application. By screening and optimizing extraction conditions using response surface methodology, choline chloride/oxalic acid (ChCl/OA) DES was identified as the optimal solvent. Under conditions of 18% moisture content, a molar ratio of 0.75, and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 0.1, it significantly increased the polyphenol content in L. cubeba fruit residues. Compared to traditional extraction methods, the dye extracted using this method demonstrated significant advantages in both dyeing performance and antibacterial effects on silk. Furthermore, enzyme modification of the dye extracted with ChCl/OA successfully enhanced the color fastness of the fabric. More importantly, it was found that monomers such as p-hydroxycinnamic acid, trans-ferulic acid, and quercetin 3-β-d-glucoside play a key role in fabric dyeing performance, especially in enhancing dyeing strength and color fastness. This study provides theoretical support for the efficient extraction and application of polyphenolic plant dyes and promotes the sustainable development of green dyeing technologies.

•AuNPs-modified COF on a portable 25-well plate for testing DIF and FLU residues. • •Integration of adsorption and SERS functions for streamlined analyses. • • Portable, on-site detection system enabling field-ready pesticide monitoring. • • Ready-to-use, pretreatment-free SERS assay delivering real-time results. We developed a ready-to-use surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor for rapid, pretreatment-free detection of difenoconazole (DIF) and flusilazole (FLU) in peach and lychee juices. The substrate combines Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with covalent organic frameworks (COF) and is implemented on a portable 25-well plate, enabling in situ testing. Juices can be directly applied to the SERS-active Au/COF composite, allowing simultaneous adsorption and signal generation. The correlation between SERS intensity and logarithmic concentration yielded R-values between 0.925 and 0.986, meeting the monitoring needs of non-laboratory scenarios. The entire workflow completes within 12 min, offering a faster alternative to conventional methods while maintaining high sensitivity and reproducibility. Detection limits reach 0.96–1.22 ppb for DIF and FLU, both of which are below the regulatory maximum residue limits. Distinct SERS fingerprints enable reliable discrimination of mixed residues across juice matrices, supporting rapid on-site monitoring and cost-effective pesticide surveillance. Fruit color correlates with distinct metabolite and flavor profiles: red with high lycopene/phenolics (sweeter), green with highest vitamin C (more acidic), yellow intermediate. • The highest lycopene content among all cherry tomatoes was found in red cultivars from Yunnan. • Organic cultivation further increased lycopene and phenolic contents in cherry tomatoes, concurrent with increased potassium/iron and decreased zinc/calcium. • Higher contents of lycopene and phenolics in cherry tomatoes led to their stronger antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. • The synergistic effects of color, origin, and cultivation management on cherry tomato quality were elucidated, guiding targeted production. Cherry tomato is a globally consumed high-value fruit whose quality and bioactive composition vary substantially due to interactions among geographical origin, fruit color, and cultivation type. A cross-regional survey evaluated conventional red, yellow, and green cultivars from Yunnan, Shandong, and Guangdong, followed by a case study comparing organic and conventional production in Yunnan. Results identified red cultivars with superior lycopene of 144.95 mg/100 g DW and phenolics of 7.15 mg GAE/g DW, leading to enhanced α-glucosidase inhibition of 65.27% and bile acid-binding capacity. High-altitude Yunnan samples exhibited distinct advantages in vitamin C and functional accumulation. Furthermore, organic cultivation in Yunnan enhanced metabolic quality, boosting lycopene to 233.90 mg/100 g DW, total phenolics to 6.94 mg GAE/g DW, and enzyme inhibition to 65.93%. The findings establish a clean influence hierarchy (color > origin > cultivation) and validate organic farming as a premium strategy for region-specific production of functionally enhanced cherry tomatoes. Dispersed loading of MnO 2 on g-C 3 N 4 resulted in enhanced oxidase-like activity. • MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 nanozyme exhibited excellent selectivity to carbaryl • Target nanozyme showed good anti-interference ability • Smartphone-assisted visual detection achieved good sensitivity and reliability. In present work, MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 nanozyme was synthesized via a calcination-hydrothermal two-step method to achieve enhanced oxidase-like activity based on the conception of electron transfer regulation and effectively loading for avoiding agglomeration to expose more active sites. Herein, g-C 3 N 4 served as a dispersing substrate for MnO 2 with oxidase-like activity and regulating the interfacial electron transfer, and their synergistical catalytic effect accelerated the conversion of dissolved oxygen to superoxide anion radicals (•O 2 − ), which oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue products. Carbaryl can be adsorbed on g-C 3 N 4 surface through π-π stacking interactions, while its carbamate group can be bound to the active centers of MnO 2 . By Lineweaver-Burk plot method, the steady-state kinetic analysis showed that carbaryl had a mixed inhibitory effect on electron transfer and the production of superoxide anion radical (•O 2 − ). Based on this principle, a smartphone-based colorimetric sensor was constructed for carbaryl detection, which exhibited a linear response in the range of 6.3–210.2 μM, with a detection limit of 3.79 μM and a quantitation limit of 12.64 μM. The method achieved satisfactory recoveries (94.3–107.5%) for spiked fruit peel samples and owned great application prospect.
