Flash spinning polyethylene/Fe3O4 magnetic drive fibers for oil absorption underwater

Dengkun Shu,Xingyu Long,Pengju Zhao,Lang Wang,Zhenhua Li,Chunzu Cheng,Shuo Yang,Long Jiao,Peng Xi,Lei Xia,Chenyang Li,Bowen Cheng

Oil pollution in water has destructive effect on the ecological environment of water bodies. However, the treatments for oil pollution underwater in irregularly shaped and non-open environments face a challenge owing to the difficulty in driving oil absorption materials underwater. Herein, this work reports a facile strategy to prepare flash spinning magnetic polyethylene fibers (FSMPFs) for oil absorption application in irregularly shaped and non-open underwater environments. The as-prepared FSMPFs exhibit good oil absorption performance, of which the oil absorption in air and underwater is 76.70 g/g and 65.32 g/g, respectively, and the FSMPFs can maintain their oil absorption performance in environments with different salinities (1–5 %) and pH values (2–12). Also, the FSMPFs show good magnetic responsiveness and controllability when applied to oil–water separation underwater in irregularly shaped pipes, and the oil–water separation efficiency of FSMPFs for oil–water emulsion reaches 99.6 %. Besides, the FSMPFs have good mechanical properties and reusability, of which the tensile strength and elongation at break is 185.9 cN and 41.2 %, respectively, and oil absorption is 76.28 g/g (99.5 % of the initial value) after 10 cycles of absorption–desorption. The FSMPFs have great potential in practical applications for oil absorption under irregularly shaped and non-open environments.

Fabrication of Magnetic Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA)/Fe3O4 Composite Electrospun Fibers

Zhu Liu,Yufu Zheng,Lizhong Lin,Xiaofei Liu,Na Qiang

Electrospinning technology is widely used for preparing biological tissue engineering scaffolds because of its advantages of simple preparation, accurate process parameters, and easy control. Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) is regarded as a promising biomass-based polymer for use in electrospinning. The incorporation of Fe3O4nanoparticles (NPs) could improve the osteogenic differentiation and proliferation of cells in the presence or absence of a static magnetic field (SMF). In this work, these two materials were blended together to obtain electrospun samples with better dispersibility and improved magnetic properties. First, composite PLLA and Fe3O4NP fibers were prepared by means of electrospinning. The influence of electrospinning conditions on the morphology of the composite fibers was then discussed. Changes in magnetic properties and thermal stability resulting from the use of different PLLA/Fe3O4mass ratios were also considered. Next, the morphology, crystal state, thermodynamic properties, and magnetic properties of the electrospun samples were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and vibration sample magnetization (VSM). The results showed that the fibers prepared using PLLA withMn= 170,000 exhibited good morphology when electrospun at 12 KV. The magnetic properties of PLLA/Fe3O4composite electrospun fibers increased with the NP content, with the exception of thermal stability. The results of the present study may help to promote the further development of PLLA/Fe3O4composite materials in the biomedical field.

High-Throughput Synthesis of Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 Nanoparticles in Chaotic Convection Mode

Mingxin Li,Wensheng Wang,Cong Xu

Conventional batch reactors are difficult to fabricate high-quality superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles at high throughput due to their high energy consumption and low mixing efficiency. We designed a four-stage oscillating feedback micromixer (FOFM) to achieve efficient mixing and mass transfer at high throughput. The FOFM can induce strong chaotic convection, resulting in a uniform concentration field and a narrow residence time distribution. High-quality superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized in the FOFM using a microemulsion method. Even at a high throughput of 155 mL/min ( Q total ), the synthesized Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 8.98 nm, a particle size distribution of 3–18 nm, and a saturation magnetization of 66 emu/g, and the productivity could reach 63.2 g/h which was three times higher than that of the conventional batch reactor. The FOFM has been proven to have great application potential in the synthesis of high-throughput and high-quality nanoparticles.

Macroscopic superlubricity achieved by polyacrylic acid modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles as additives

Yongfeng Yang,Rui Zhang,Shaowen Dong,Xiaoyang Ma,Jinjin Li

In this study, a stable macroscopic superlubricity state (COF about 0.005) after a short running-in period of 5 s under an ultra-high contact pressure of 1.45 GPa was achieved with the lubrication of polyacrylic acid modified Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as additives at the Si 3 N 4 /sapphire interface. The realization of superlubricity can be attributed to the detachment of polyacrylic acid molecules on the modified Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles surface, which induced the tribochemical reaction between the polyacrylic acid molecules and friction surfaces, generating a tribofilm to prevent the direct contact of the friction pair and provide a low shear strength to reduce friction. The extremely low friction and wear induced by polyacrylic acid modified Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles may contribute to the development of high-performance lubrication systems.

Preparation of Fe3O4 magnetic nanomaterials for the enrichment of phosvitin phosphopeptides

Shuze Ren,Songming Li,Mahmoud Abou-Elsoud,Rui Cui,Xing Fu,Xi Huang

Phosvitin phosphopeptides (PPP) have a high ability to chelate mineral ions and promote calcium absorption. In this study, The Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres were first synthesized by hydrothermal method, then the three magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@PMAA@PAMAM, Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ce 4+ , and Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@TiO 2 ) were obtained by layer modification on their surfaces, respectively. The magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, XRD, VSM, and Zeta potential. TEM analysis revealed that the nanoparticles were spherical and regular in shape. XRD diffraction analysis showed that the modified nanoparticles have a complete crystal structure. Meanwhile, PAMAM, Ce 4+ , TiO 2 , and other groups have been successfully modified on the nanoparticles. VSM hysteresis regression line results revealed that the magnetic nanoparticles are superparamagnetic. The three kinds of magnetic nanoparticles still maintained excellent enrichment performance after five times of repeated use. Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@TiO 2 has the best enrichment performance (167 mg g −1 ). The N/P ratio of the enriched PPP decreased from 1.36 to 0.98, which also showed that it had excellent PPP enrichment performance. Therefore, the modified magnetic nanoparticles could be an optimal PPP enrichment and purification material.

Stimuli-responsive PAO10@PSF/Fe3O4 microcapsules for regulation of tribological properties

Liang Bao,Chengkun Wang,Yaoming Zhang,Shoubing Chen,Liming Tao,Lihe Guo,Rui Yang,Peng Liu,Qihua Wang,Tingmei Wang

Magnetic PAO10@PSF/Fe 3 O 4 microcapsules (MMCs), loaded with PAO10, were prepared by solvent evaporation method using PFOTES/Fe 3 O 4 particles stabilized oil-in-water emulsion as template, and embedded into epoxy (EP) to prepare self-lubricating composites. Further, the tribological properties of the MMCs were analyzed, and the wear mechanism were discussed in detail. When the content of microcapsules was 20 wt%, compared with pure epoxy resin, the friction coefficient (COF) and wear rate of epoxy/magnetic microcapsule composites (EP/MMCs) decreased by 91.2 % and 92.9 %, respectively, primarily attributed to the formation of lubricating oil film during friction, and the internal lubricating oil and the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the shell were formed a coordinated solid-liquid lubrication effect. During the preparation of EP/MMCs, MMCs could respond to the external magnetic field, the distribution of the microcapsules in the composites could be controlled by the magnetic field, thereby affecting the tribological properties of the composites at different positions. In addition, the composite material had light stimulation response performance. Under the irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) light, the friction coefficient of EP/MMCs decreased rapidly and responded quickly. This study provides a high-performance friction material, which is expected to regulate the tribological properties of the material according to external stimuli to achieve intelligent lubrication.

Fluorine doping induced accelerated Li+ kinetics in conversion-type Fe3O4 anode

Shasha Guo,Mohamed Ait Tamerd,Jiayi Li,Jianwei Wu,Xinyue Shi,Chih-Wen Pao,Zhiwei Hu,Jiwei Ma

Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) is a potential anode for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries thanks to its high theoretical capacity and cost-effectiveness. Yet, the capacity decay and limited kinetics induced by the structure damage along the conversion process need to be emphasized before its practical application. In this study, we propose an intrinsic modulation of Fe 3 O 4 using fluorine doping to considerably boost the cycle stability and rate capability. Benefiting from the enlarged metal-anion distance and improved electronic conductivity induced by the fluorine dopants, the as-prepared Fe 3 O 3.94 F 0.06 anode provides a low-energy-barrier path for the Li + intercalation, which is responsible for the enhanced kinetics. The present study emphasizes the essential role of anion modification on conversion-type transition metal oxides that enable boosting the electrochemical performance towards high-energy-density battery applications.

Controlled Synthesis of Fe3O4/ZIF-8 Nanoparticles for Magnetically Separable Nanocatalysts

Fei Pang,Mingyuan He,Jianping Ge

Graphical Increasing attraction : Fe 3 O 4 /zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were synthesized through a room-temperature reaction between 2-methylimidazolate (MeIM) and zinc nitrate in the presence of Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals (see figure; PAA=polyacrylic acid). The particles have a superparamagnetic response and can be separated by means of a magnetic field and redispersed into the solution after withdrawal of the field. Fe 3 O 4 /ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized through a room-temperature reaction between 2-methylimidazolate and zinc nitrate in the presence of Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals. The particle size, surface charge, and magnetic loading can be conveniently controlled by the dosage of Zn(NO 3 ) 2 and Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals. The as-prepared particles show both good thermal stability (stable to 550 °C) and large surface area (1174 m 2 g −1 ). The nanoparticles also have a superparamagnetic response, so that they can strongly respond to an external field during magnetic separation and disperse back into the solution after withdrawal of the magnetic field. For the Knoevenagel reaction, which is catalyzed by alkaline active sites on external surface of catalyst, small Fe 3 O 4 /ZIF-8 nanoparticles show a higher catalytic activity. At the same time, the nanocatalysts can be continuously used in multiple catalytic reactions through magnetic separation, activation, and redispersion with little loss of activity.

Wood-converted porous carbon decorated with MIL-101(Fe) derivatives for promoting photo-Fenton degradation of ciprofloxacin

Li Kaiqian,Zhang Xupeng,Huang Xueqin,Li Xianghong,Chang Qiaowen,Wang Jing,Deng Shuduan,Zhu Gang

In response to the escalating concerns over antibiotics in aquatic environments, the photo-Fenton reaction has been spotlighted as a promising approach to address this issue. Herein, a novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst (Fe 3 O 4 /WPC) with magnetic recyclability was synthesized through a facile two-step process that included in situ growth and subsequent carbonization treatment. This catalyst was utilized to expedite the photocatalytic decomposition of ciprofloxacin (CIP) assisted by H 2 O 2 . Characterization results indicated the successful anchoring of MIL-101(Fe)-derived spindle-like Fe 3 O 4 particles in the multi-channeled wood-converted porous carbon (WPC) scaffold. The as-synthesized hybrid photocatalysts, boasting a substantial specific surface area of 414.90 m 2 ·g −1 and an excellent photocurrent density of 0.79 μA·cm −2 , demonstrated superior photo-Fenton activity, accomplishing approximately 100% degradation of CIP within 120 min of ultraviolet-light exposure. This can be attributed to the existence of a heterojunction between Fe 3 O 4 and WPC substrate that promotes the migration and enhances the efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Meanwhile, the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox circulation and mesoporous wood carbon in the catalyst synergistically enhance the utilization of H 2 O and accelerate the formation of •OH radicals, leading to heightened degradation efficiency of CIP. Experiments utilizing chemical trapping techniques have demonstrated that •OH radicals are instrumental in the CIP degradation process. Furthermore, the study on reusability indicated that the efficiency in removing CIP remained at 89.5% even through five successive cycles, indicating the structural stability and excellent recyclability of Fe 3 O 4 /WPC. This research presented a novel pathway for designing magnetically reusable MOFs/wood-derived composites as photo-Fenton catalysts for actual wastewater treatment.

Yolk–Shell Fe3O4@Void@N-Carbon Nanostructures Based on One-Step Deposition of SiO2 and Resorcinol-3-Aminophenol-Formaldehyde (R-APF) Cocondensed Resin Dual Layers onto Fe3O4 Nanoclusters

Kesong Tian,Junyan Wang,Wanchun Guo,Ruifei Li,Ling Cao,Zhaopeng Xu,Haiyan Wang

Yolk–shell magnetic nanoparticles@nitrogen-enriched Carbon nanostructures with a magnetic core and a hollow nitrogen-enriched carbon shell exhibit considerable promise in various applications, such as drug delivery, heterogenous catalysts, removal of metal ions and organic pollutants, and screening of biomolecules, due to their strong magnetic response, unique cavities, and the selective absorption ability of nitrogen-enriched groups. However, their complicated synthesis always involves possible surface modification, layer-by-layer deposition of a sacrificial middle layer and an outer nitrogen-enriched layer on magnetic nanoparticles, subsequent carbonization, and final removal of the sacrificial middle layer. Herein, yolk–shell Fe 3 O 4 @nitrogen-enriched carbon nanostructures are constructed based on NH 4 + ion-induced one-step deposition of SiO 2 and Resorcinol-3-aminophenol-formaldehyde cocondensed resin (R-APF) dual layers onto poly acrylic acid-modified Fe 3 O 4 nanoclusters without any extra surface modification. The N-Carbon shell thickness of the yolk–shell Fe 3 O 4 @Void@N-Carbon nanostructure can be finely tailored though tailoring the feeding amount of aminophenol and resorcinol to tune the thickness of the outer R-APF resin shell onto Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 intermediate particles. This NH 4 + ion-induced one-pot deposition of double layers can effectively promote synthesis efficiency of this kind of yolk–shell nanostructure.

Development of bovine serum albumin-modified Fe3O4 embedded in porous α-ketoglutaric acid/chitosan (BSA/Fe3O4@KA/CS): A magnetically targeted hemostatic dressing for deep and irregular wounds

Jinnan Guo,Yuanyuan Zhao,Guanqun Peng,Tong Ye,Xiaohui Zhu,Runtian Li,Jintao Shen,Lina Du,Shanshan Wang,Zhiyun Meng,Hui Gan,Ruolan Gu,Wenzhong Sun,Guifang Dou,Shuchen Liu,Yunbo Sun

Severe bleeding from deep and irregular wounds poses a significant challenge in prehospital and surgical settings. To address this issue, we developed a novel chitosan-based hemostatic dressing with a magnetic targeting mechanism using Fe 3 O 4 , termed bovine serum albumin-modified Fe 3 O 4 embedded in porous α-ketoglutaric acid/chitosan (BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS). This dressing enhances hemostasis by magnetically guiding the agent to the wound site. In vitro, the hemostatic efficacy of BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS is comparable to that of commercial chitosan (Celox™) and is not diminished by the modification. In vivo, BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS demonstrated superior hemostatic performance and reduced blood loss compared to Celox™. The hemostatic mechanism of BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS includes the concentration of solid blood components through water absorption, adherence to blood cells, and activation of the endogenous coagulation pathway. Magnetic field targeting is crucial in directing the dressing to deep hemorrhagic sites. Additionally, safety assessments have confirmed the biocompatibility and biodegradability of BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS. In conclusion, we introduce a novel approach to modify chitosan using magnetic guidance for effective hemostasis, positioning BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS as a promising candidate for managing various wounds.

Cellulose as a template to fabricate a cellulase-immobilized composite with high bioactivity and reusability

Lin Tan,Zhaojun Tan,Huixia Feng,Jianhui Qiu

Herein, a new strategy was developed to fabricate an oriented cellulase/chitosan/Fe3O4 composite, which possesses extremely high activity, reusability, and stability. Compared to the conventional methods, herein, cellulase was first mixed with cellulose; this allowed the active-centers of cellulase to combine with cellulose tightly. Then, the cellulase/cellulose mixture was immediately embedded into chitosan (CS) layers, which were coated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles. After hydrolyzing the cellulose, a flexible hollow structure was obtained. The activity of immobilized cellulase was still maintained over 50% even after 15 uses; this indicated that the composite we fabricated herein possessed much higher activity and reusability as compared to those reported in other studies. The promising stability and activity of the immobilized cellulase is very important for practical applications.
