Mercuric ion (Hg 2+ ) is a toxic metal ion in the environment, which will seriously damage the people's health. Therefore, the simple sensitive detection of Hg 2+ is of great significance. In this work, Ag-CoFe 2 O 4 /reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites were synthesized via a one-pot microwave-assisted reaction, which can directly oxidize 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce a light blue. Then we have developed a dual colorimetric and SERS detection of Hg 2+ based on the stimulus of intrinsic oxidase-like catalytic activity of Ag-CoFe 2 O 4 /rGO nanocomposites. It is demonstrated that the interaction between Hg 2+ and Ag nanoparticles can occur in a short time, which includes the formation of Ag-Hg alloy due to the reduction of Hg 2+ . In addition, the formation of such alloy can enhance the oxide-like activity, which makes the detection of Hg 2+ more sensitive. By using the SERS detection approach, the assay can detect Hg 2+ as low as 0.67 nM. This detection ability is much better than previous reports based on the enzyme-like catalytic reaction, which is also lower than the maximum value of Hg 2+ permitted in drinking water by the World Health Organization (WHO) (30 nM) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (10 nM). In addition, this detection system also shows an excellent selectivity toward Hg 2+ due to the affinity of Hg to Ag-CoFe 2 O 4 /rGO nanocomposites. Therefore, this approach is potentially applicable for the sensitive determination of Hg 2+ in real environmental conditions.

A monomer 1-acrolyl-2-rhodamine 6G hydrazide (AR6GH) was synthesized by the heterogeneous reaction of acryloyl chloride with rhodamine 6G hydrazide (R6GH) and characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR and elememtal analyses. Then it was micellar copolymerized with acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA) to obtain a water-soluble fluorescent copolymers (poly(AM-AA-AR6GH)) which were characterized by the method of FTIR and 1 H NMR. The viscosity average molecular weight M

– of poly(AM-AA) and poly(AM-AA-AR6GH)s were 1.76 × 10 6 , 8.58 × 10 4 and 7.68 × 10 4 g/mol, respectively. The fluorescent characteristic of the aqueous solutions of copolymers was investigated both in varied pH and in the presence of metal cations. The poly(AM-AA-AR6GH) was found to be a selective chemosensor for Hg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , Pb 2+ ions. Obvious fluorescence enhancement was due to the photophysical response of the copolymer to the presence of Hg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , or Pb 2+ ions. In addition, the ability of the copolymer to detect different metal cations (Ag + , Ba 2+ , Co 2+ , Cd 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ , K + , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Na + , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ ) in aqueous solution was studied. The results suggest that copolymer may offer potential application for sensors of Hg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , or Pb 2+ ions in aqueous solution.

Using environment-friendly materials for sensing toxic metal ions has drawn significant attention in recent research. Herein, we present an aqueous synthesis of stable CdS quantum dots (QDs) using thiol-functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the unique capping ligand for the detection of trace Hg2+ in environmental water samples. The CdS QDs with an average size of 3.3 nm had good water-solubility and favorable fluorescence with a quantum yield of 32.8% and a longer luminescence lifetime of 31.9 ns. The fluorescence intensity of QDs aqueous solution in the 520 nm wavelength was quenched upon the addition of Hg2+. Under the optimal conditions, the ratio of the blank fluorescence intensity to the quenched fluorescence intensity was linearly proportional to the Hg2+ concentration from 2 to 4000 nM with a detection limit of 1 nM. Also, many co-existing metal ions were not interfered with the detection of Hg2+. This nanomaterial was successfully applied to the measurement of Hg2+ in water samples.

A new multiple-ion-responsive chemosensor was developed for the selective and differential detection of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ , based on the completely different ions recognition behaviors of the single rhodamine hydrazone-type probe in the absence and presence of UV irradiation. The probe was synthesized through simple chemical linkages of rhodamine B hydrazide, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and acryloyl group. In the absence of UV irradiation, this probe could selectively sense Hg 2+ in the presence of other metal ions by colorimetric and fluorescent responses with considerably high sensitivity (limit of detection: 7.1 × 10 −8 M), and the process could be monitored directly by the naked eye. Intriguingly, when adding various metal ions to the probe solution under UV irradiation, only the Cu 2+ ion, even at a concentration of 1.5 × 10 −7 M, was found to induce a significant photochromism along with distinct color change. Benefiting from the high selectivity and sensitivity of such a photochromism, a convenient colorimetric sensing method for detection of Cu 2+ in presence of UV irradiation was also established. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the interference of Hg 2+ on Cu 2+ could be easily eliminated by employing Br − as a masking agent, and subsequently the discrimination of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ under their coexistence was achieved.

A HPU-23@Ru@Tb-NH 2 sensor array with light-driven oxidase-mimicking activity and triple-emission fluorescence was developed. It was composed of a Tb 3+ -functionalized metal organic framework and Ru(bpy) 3 2+ and applied to the simultaneous detection of Hg 2+ , ClO − , and PO 4 3− via differently responsive channels. HPU-23@Ru@Tb-NH 2 had a photoresponsive colorimetric response toward Hg 2+ with a LOD as low as 4.18 nM. In addition, the three emissions of the HPU-23@Ru@Tb-NH 2 sensor array were influenced by ClO − and PO 4 3− to varying degrees, causing remarkably distinguishable responses for the fluorescence channels to discriminate ClO − and PO 4 3− from each other. The detection limits of ClO − and PO 4 3− were 12.26 µM and 0.197 nM, respectively. Therefore, this work demonstrates the feasibility of multi-emission and multi-mode sensing platform, which is able to combine the advantages of different strategies for solving the problems of various toxic substances coexisting in the environment while meeting the needs of accurate and precise results and no side interferences. Hg 2+ contamination in aquatic environments represents a significant threat to human health and ecological systems due to its pronounced toxicity and enduring nature. It is imperative to develop a high-performance, recyclable adsorbent for Hg 2+ removal to enable effective treatment of wastewater. Herein, MIL-101@MXene was synthesized through in-situ hydrothermal growth of MIL-101 on MXene substrates, and was subsequently incorporated into a double-network hydrogel matrix comprising polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), resulting in the formation of the MIL-101@MXene/hydrogel adsorbent. A comprehensive characterization of MIL-101@MXene/hydrogel was conducted utilizing a series of analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The porous hydrogel network of MIL-101@MXene/hydrogel, along with the micro-mesoporous structure of MIL-101@MXene, creates a hierarchical pore architecture. In this configuration, the macropores of the hydrogel facilitate efficient diffusion of Hg 2+ into the material's interior while promoting physical adsorption. Meanwhile, the micro-mesopores not only provide a substantial specific surface area but also reveal numerous active adsorption sites, thereby enhancing the overall adsorption capacity. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that MIL-101@MXene/hydrogel exhibited optimal performance for the removal of Hg 2+ at a pH of 5, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity. In addition, MIL-101@MXene/hydrogel demonstrated competitive selectivity and reusability, with only about a 25 % reduction in Hg 2+ adsorption capacity in the presence of various competing ions, and retaining over 55 % of its initial capacity after six successive adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption mechanism was further elucidated through FT-IR and XPS analyses conducted both before and after the adsorption process. The results highlighted the coordination of Hg 2+ with unsaturated Fe 3+ sites and carboxyl oxygen atoms, as well as surface complexation between Hg 2+ and the functional groups on MXene. Physisorption also contributed to the overall adsorption process. Additionally, there were interactions characterized by hydrogen bonding and coordination between the hydrogel matrix and Hg 2+ . This work indicates that MIL-101@MXene/hydrogel is an effective adsorbent with practical potential for Hg 2+ -contaminated wastewater remediation.

A novel label-free fluorescence “turn-on” strategy was developed for the sensitive detection of Hg 2+ based on the thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T-Hg 2+ -T) coordination and the fact that single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) greatly enhances the fluorescence of terbium (III) (Tb 3+ ), but double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) does not. In the absence of Hg 2+ , the mercury-specific DNA (MSD) hybridized with the corresponding complementary strand (cDNA) to form a double helix structure in solution based on Watson-Crick base pairings, which cannot enhance the fluorescence of Tb 3+ . In the presence of Hg 2+ , MSD preferentially bound with Hg 2+ to form the T-Hg 2+ -T complex due to the strong affinity of Hg(II) for the T bases of DNA, thus avoiding the hybridization of the cDNA to MSD. The free cDNA can greatly enhance the emission of Tb 3+ , leading to a sharp increase in fluorescence intensity . Under the optimized conditions, the increased fluorescence intensity was proportional to the concentration of Hg 2+ in the range from 10 to 600 nM, and this method can detect concentrations of Hg 2+ as low as 0.24 nM. Moreover, satisfactory results were obtained for the detection of Hg 2+ in river water and fish samples, and the results were consistent with those from the atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS). Thus, the fluorescence characteristics of Tb 3+ were here used in a “turn on” approach to detect Hg 2+ , which represents a new opportunity for Hg 2+ analysis in the field of environmental monitoring and food safety.

N-Doped carbon dots (NCDs) were facilely synthesized by a hydrothermal method using an ethanolamine–ionic liquid (1-carboxyethyl-3-methyl imidazole chloride) gel as a precursor. The NCDs had an average particle size of 3.4 nm and were partially crystalline and abundant in amide and hydroxyl groups and pyridinic/pyrrolic nitrogen atoms on their surfaces. In water, the NCDs showed excitation- and concentration-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties with a high salt tolerance and a quantum yield of 24.7% under 350 nm excitation. The PL of the aqueous suspension of NCDs remained stable in a pH range of 4–11 and was significantly quenched by Hg2+ and Cu2+ owing to the strong interactions between the metal ions and the surface groups and/or nitrogen atoms of the NCDs. The possible quenching mechanism was determined to be photo-induced electron transfer. By introducing the masking agents of P2O74− and S2O32− into the aqueous suspension of NCDs, two label-free “turn-off” fluorescent probes for Hg2+ and Cu2+ with a high sensitivity and selectivity were built, respectively. Moreover, the quenched NCDs–Hg2+ system could be used as a selective “turn-on” fluorescent probe for S2O32− due to the strong affinity of S2O32− to Hg2+. The above described three probes all illustrated two good linear detection ranges for Hg2+ (0–10 and 10–50 μM), Cu2+ (0–2.5 and 2.5–40 μM) and S2O32− (0–20 and 20–80 μM), and their limits of detection were calculated to be 0.076, 0.125 and 1.17 μM. The recovery tests demonstrated that the above described probes were reliable and capable of detecting corresponding ions in tap water samples with satisfactory results.

Mercury (Hg 2+ ) contamination in water is associated with potential toxicity to human health and ecosystems. Many research studies have been ongoing to develop new materials for the remediation of Hg 2+ pollution in water. In this study, a novel thiol- and amino-containing fibrous adsorbent was prepared by grafting 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol (AMTD) onto PAN fiber through a microwave-assisted method. The synthesized functional fiber was characterized by FTIR, SEM, and elemental analysis. Adsorption tests depicted that for mercury uptake, PAN MW -AMTD fiber exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity compared with other fibrous adsorbents and selective adsorption feature under the interference of other metal ions , including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Zn 2+ . The influence of pH on the adsorption process was investigated and the effect of temperature revealed that the adsorption sorption process was endothermic and the adsorption performance of PAN MW -AMTD was elevated with the increase of temperature. Kinetic studies of PAN MW -AMTD fiber followed the pseudo-second-order and the adsorption isotherm of Hg 2+ was well fitted by Sips and Langmuir equations, given the maximum adsorption amount of 332.9 mg/g. XPS results suggested that a synergetic coordination effect of sulfur and nitrogen in functional fiber with mercury took responsibility for the adsorption mechanism in the uptake process. In addition, the prepared PAN MW -AMTD fiber could easily be regenerated with 0.1 M HCl for five times without significant reduction of mercury removal efficiency. Thus, this study will facilitate the research on novel functional material for the removal of mercury from water.

The fluorescence intensity of N, S co-doped graphene quantum dots (N, S-GQDs) can be quenched by Fe3+and Hg2+. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation and experimental studies indicate that the fluorescence quenching mechanisms for Fe3+and Hg2+detection are mainly attributed to the inner filter effect (IFE) and dynamic quenching process, respectively. The electronegativity difference between C and doped atoms (N, S) in favor to introduce negative charge sites on the surface of N, S-GQDs leads to charge redistribution. Those negative charge sites facilitate the adsorption of cations on the N, S-GQDs’ surface. Atomic population analysis results show that some charge transfer from Fe3+and Hg2+to N, S-GQDs, which relate to the fluorescent quenching of N, S-GQDs. In addition, negative adsorption energy indicates the adsorption of Hg2+and Fe2+is energetically favorable, which also contributes to the adsorption of quencher ions. Blue fluorescent N, S-GQDs were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal treatment. Fluorescent lifetime and UV-vis measurements further validate the fluorescent quenching mechanism is related to the electron transfer dynamic quenching and IFE quenching. The as-synthesized N, S-GQDs were applied as a fluorescent probe for Fe3+and Hg2+detection. Results indicate that N, S-GQDs have good sensitivity and selectivity on Fe3+and Hg2+with a detection limit as low as 2.88 and 0.27 nM, respectively.

Conveniently and efficiently monitoring I − and Hg 2+ in agricultural products or drinking beverages for the protection of human health is currently a great challenge. With this aim, a Ag-Pt bimetal quantum-dot nanozyme boosted by bioactive folic acid (FA@Ag-Pt QDs) was first developed for multichannel monitoring of I − and Hg 2+ in this work using a two-step liquid-phase reduction method. Not only did the present FA@Ag-Pt QDs possess superior peroxidase-like activity with Michaelis constant ( K m ) and maximal reaction rate ( V max ) of 0.01 mM/2.95 × 10 −8 M·s −1 and 1.15 mM/3.88 × 10 −8 M·s −1 , respectively, trace Hg 2+ or I − could exclusively alter their enzyme-mimic performance with obvious color changes from blue to colorless or dark blue. I − could also strengthen the inherent fluorescence property of FA@Ag-Pt QDs. When applied for visual monitoring of I − and Hg 2+ in real beverages or iodine-containing agricultural products, the detection recoveries were 93.9 %–105.3 % and 96.8–104.3 % with low detection limits of 6.56 × 10 −8 mol/L and 4.00 × 10 −10 mol/L (S/N = 3), respectively. The recovery and detection limit for fluorescent detection of I − were 95.8 %–104.1 % and 1.75 × 10 −8 mol/L (S/N = 3), respectively. The mechanisms driving the improved peroxidase-like activity of FA@Ag-Pt QDs and their selective monitoring of Hg 2+ and I − were illustrated in detail. The proposed FA@Ag-Pt QDs will act as an efficient sensor for the practical multichannel monitoring of Hg 2+ and I − , with superior catalytic signal amplification.

The increasing accumulation of toxic mercury species in water environment has posed a serious health threat worldwide, making it inevitable to develop the versatile materials to achieve efficient prevention and remediation of mercury pollution. Guided by the solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) approach, this work rationally constructed a mixed-ligand NH 2 -UiO-66-SH (NSU66) with hierarchical-pore structure by incorporating the thiol-rich ligands (H 2 DMBD) into the water-stable NH 2 -UiO-66 (NU66) precursor to act as a smart adsorbent equipped with sensitive detector for simultaneous sensing and removal of Hg 2+ . Unlike the traditional adsorbents, the as-prepared NSU66 not only exhibits a remarkable removal ability with fast capture rate (within 60.0 min), large uptake capacity (265.29 mg/g), and qualified selectivity, but also possesses satisfactory sensing capability, accompanied by low detection limit (3.50 × 10 −2 µM), wide linear range (1.00–99.7 µM), high specificity, and strong anti-interference capability. The detection function plays a vital role in indicating the removal behavior and the pre-enrichment effect of adsorption process correspondingly improves the sensitivity of indicator. Notably, the sensing and trapping capabilities of NSU66 are significantly improved compared to the NU66, which stems from the delicate design of the mixed-ligand and hierarchical-pore structure. Furthermore, proven excellent stability and recyclability emphasize the feasibility of NSU66 in practical applications. These results suggest that the smart NSU66 adsorbent can serve as a favorable platform for early warning and guided removal of toxic Hg 2+ in water.
