Although some groundbreaking work has proved the feasibility of non-contact Marangoni propulsion generated by combination of the superhydrophobicity and photothermal effect, there are still challenges including the strong interfacial adhesion, multifunctional structural design and superior durability. In this paper, a simple two-step spraying method is used to prepare superhydrophobic and multi-functional fluorinated acidified carbon nanotubes (F-ACNTs)/Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings. The introduction of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and F-ACNTs not merely improve the surface roughness but also endow the coating with the outstanding magnetic property and photothermal conversion performance. The PDMS can reduce the surface energy and also improve the interfacial adhesion between the nanofillers and the substrate (the filter paper). The superhydrophobicity can be maintained when the material experiences abrasion, near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation and acid treatment, exhibiting outstanding durability. The highly stable superhydrophobic coating introduces a thin layer of air to decrease the drag force between the filter paper and the water surface, and can be used for controlled self-propelled light-driven motion and magnetic-driven motion. The movement can be manipulated by adjusting the direction of the incident NIR light and magnetic field. In particular, the superhydrophobic and superoleophilic coating based actuators can be easily driven to the oil-contaminated area on the water surface by using a magnet for high efficiency oil removal. This work provides a simple and universal strategy for developing intelligent and multi-responsive actuators possessing promising applications in various fields such as environmental protection, micro-robots and biomedicine.

One of the difficulties in atherosclerosis treatment is that the ablation of inflammatory macrophages, repair of vascular endothelial injury, and anti-tissue proliferation should be considered. However, there are few studies that can solve the abovementioned problems simultaneously. Herein, we present a kind of near-infrared (NIR) light-driven multifunctional mesoporous/macroporous tubular micromotor which can rapidly target the damaged blood vessels and release different drugs. Their motion effect can promote themselves to penetrate into the plaque site, and the generated heat effect caused by NIR irradiation can realize the photothermal ablation of inflammatory macrophages. Furthermore, these micromotors can rapidly release the vascular endothelial growth factor for endothelialization and slowly release paclitaxel for antiproliferation to achieve synergistic treatment of atherosclerosis. In vivo results demonstrated that the micromotors can achieve a good therapeutic effect for atherosclerosis. This kind of micro/nanomotor technology with a complex porous structure for drug loading will bring a more potential treatment platform for the disease.

The oxidative stability of Jatropha biodiesel after exposure to different wavelengths of visible light was studied and kinetic analysis of the oxidation process was carried out. The results showed that the induction period of Jatropha biodiesel was 5.12 h and visible light at different wavelengths affected the oxidation of biodiesel differently. Effect of oxidation was the strongest in the purple, where the induction period was reduced to 2.65 h. The red had the weakest effect on biodiesel oxidation, and the induction period was reduced to 4.61 h. Acid value detection, component analysis and UV characterization of biodiesel oxidized by visible light at different wavelengths. The results showed that with the decrease of light wavelength, the acid value of the biodiesel increased from 0.2577 mg KOH/g to 0.3438 mg KOH/g and the content of methyl linoleate containing two carbon–carbon double bonds decreases. UV characterization results showed that the absorption peak absorbance of conjugated double bond of Jatropha biodiesel oxidized by purple light was 5.282, while the absorption peak absorbance of conjugated double bond of Jatropha biodiesel oxidized by red light was only 2.877, and purple light was helpful to stimulate the generation of conjugate double bond. The kinetic analysis results showed that the different wavelengths had different rates of biodiesel degradation. Purple light has the fastest oxidation rate. The oxidation rate constant k 1 was 0.06011, the reaction order was n = 1, and the minimum activation energy of the oxidation reaction process was 19.79 kJ·mol −1 .

Graphical A visible light-mediated reaction of N -phenylpropynamide with diethyl 2,2-dibromomalonate has been developed for the synthesis of bromo-substituted azaspirotrienedione. This method avoids the use of transition metals, peroxides and other substances that are harmful to the environment. Through radical addition/ipso-cyclization/oxidation cascade reaction, C−Br, C−C and C=O bonds can be formed in one pot. Various substituents of N -arylpropynamide are well tolerated and yield of the target product is up to 95%. A visible-light-mediated reaction of N -phenylpropynamides with diethyl 2,2-dibromomalonate for the synthesis of bromo-substituted azaspirotrienediones has been developed. This method allows the formation of C−Br, C−C and C=O bonds in one pot via a cascade radical addition/ipso-cyclization/oxidation process. A possible radical mechanism involving single electron transfer and energy transfer processes is proposed based on control experiments, cyclic voltammetry determination and Stern-Volmer quenching experiments.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by external physical impacts and can induce complex cascade events, sometimes converging to paralysis. Existing clinical drugs to traumatic SCI have limited therapeutic efficacy because of either the poor blood–spinal cord barrier (BSCB) permeability or a single function. Here, we suggest a “pleiotropic messenger” strategy based on near-infrared (NIR)–triggered on-demand NO release at the lesion area for traumatic SCI recovery via the concurrent neuroregeneration and neuroprotection processing. This NO delivery system was constructed as upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) core coated by zeolitic imidazolate framework–8 (ZIF-8) with NO donor (CysNO). This combined strategy substantial promotes the repair of SCI in vertebrates, ascribable to the pleiotropic effects of NO including the suppression of gliosis and inflammation, the promotion of neuroregeneration, and the protection of neurons from apoptosis, which opens intriguing perspectives not only in nerve repair but also in neurological research and tissue engineering.

Herein, novel carbon dots (CDs) with efficient antibacterial activity are prepared by a simple cyclization reaction of 4-formylbenzoic acid and pyrrole and cross-linking with p-phenylenediamine at room temperature. The CDs exhibit the fluorescence property of red emission, greatly reducing the noise interference from bacterial autofluorescence in fluorescence imaging. At the same time, the CDs with the feature of red absorption facilitate the achievement of light excitation of deep tissues in the living body. Owing to the introduction of the porphyrin ring structure as a photosensitizer, the CDs are able to trigger the generation of singlet oxygen. When excited by a 638 nm laser and irradiated for 20 min, 10 μg mL−1 CDs can achieve complete bacterial extinction. Laser confocal microscopy imaging further demonstrates that the CDs act on the outside of bacteria and generate reactive oxygen species under red light irradiation, providing a non-multidrug resistant sterilization method.

The controllable synthesis and customized design of micro/nanomotors represents a highly desired paradigm in the field of intelligent nanovehicles. Exploiting asymmetrical structures and geometry-dependent propulsion are the two main strategies for achieving light-driven micro/nanomotors. However, inherent crystal-structure differences in a single colloidal motor have rarely been explored. Here, we propose the first surface-heterojunction-induced propulsion methodology for cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanomotors, by tailoring the crystal morphology of a Cu2O crystalloid from a sphere into a truncated octahedron and preserving the controllable-index crystal facets of {100} and {111} in a single colloid. Due to the high crystallinity and distinct activity of the exposed crystal facets, a surface heterojunction between the {100} and {111} facets is formed to enhance electron–hole separation, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, thus endowing the truncated octahedral Cu2O nanomotors with autonomous and vigorous movement in biocompatible fuels under visible light. These Cu2O nanomotors can reach a propulsion speed in water of over two times faster than that of polycrystalline spherical motors with low crystallinity. The efficient Cu2O nanomotors offer a promising guideline not only for the synthesis of novel light-driven motors with desired structures, but also for potential applications in biocompatible environments.

Microwave absorbents with specific morphology and structure have fundamental significance for tuning microwave absorption (MA). Herein, N-doped carbon sphere nanoparticles and hollow capsules were successfully fabricated via oxidative polymerization of dopamine in different mixed solutions, without any template preparation or etching process. Compared to solid particles, the microwave absorbents consisting of N-doped carbon with a hollow structure showed enormously enhanced MA performance, exhibiting a broad effective absorption bandwidth (from 12.7 GHz to 17.9 GHz) and a minimum reflection loss of −27.2 dB with a sample thickness of 2.0 mm. This work paves an attractive way for simple and eco-friendly preparation of advanced light weight microwave absorbents.

A highly efficient light-driven cuprous oxide @ graphene oxide (Cu 2 O@GO) micromotor which can be propelled with various biocompatible fuels is described. The Cu 2 O@GO micromotors, which achieve enhanced photocatalytic performance by doping Cu 2 O with GO, can be efficiently propelled by visible light and even near infrared light. Compared with conventional plain Cu 2 O micromotors, which can only be driven by visible light, the Cu 2 O@GO micromotors show more than 3 times faster speeds under the full range of visible light with biocompatible glucose fuel. In addition, due to the GO-induced enhanced photocatalytic performance and local photoinduced thermal effects, such motors can be powered by NIR with a series of biocompatible fuels, such as glucose, leucine, and urea solutions, with speeds reaching up to 11.39 µm s −1 (in glucose), which extends the excitation wavelength of photocatalytic micromotors to near-infrared light. This novel strategy of improving the performance of light-driven micromotors via GO doping has opened up a new and attractive path for the preparation of micromotors with potential applications in biological environments.

Colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have shown promise in visible and near-infrared light emission compared with conventional quantum dots because of their sharp and highly efficient emission. Light-driven halide exchange offers high degrees of tunability of perovskite NC composition and photoluminescence properties. A remaining challenge is the incomplete change between bromide and chloride due to the presence of radical quenchers. Herein, an optimized in situ halide exchange method of perovskite NCs is reported. Chloroform is used as the solvent and the precursor to effectively generate halide radicals and ions under ultraviolet light irradiation in an inert atmosphere. This strategy achieves complete crystal transformation in colloidal perovskite NCs such as CsPbBr3-to-CsPbCl3 and Cs4PbBr6-to-CsPbCl3. The exchange reaction rate can be further tuned by the presence of B-site dopants such as Zn2+ and Ce3+. The dopant cations are partially remained in the exchanged perovskite NCs, indicating the predominance of thermodynamic control in the crystal transformation.

BiVO 4 , a promising visible-light responding photocatalyst, has aroused extensive research interest because of inexpensiveness and excellent chemical stability. However, its main drawback is the poor photoinduced charge-transfer dynamics. Building nanostructures is an effective way to tackle this problem. Herein, we put forward a new method to prepare nanostructured BiVO 4 from Bi-based metal-organic frameworks[Bi-MOF(CAU-17)] precursor. The as-prepared material has a rod-like morphology inherited from the Bi-MOF sacrificial template and consists of small nanoparticle as building blocks. Compared with its counterparts prepared by conventional methods, MOF-derived nanostructured BiVO 4 shows better light absorption ability, narrower bandgap, and improved electrical conductivity as well as reduced recombination. Consequently, BiVO 4 nanostructure demonstrates high photocatalytic activity under visible light towards the degradation of methylene blue. Methylene blue can be degraded up to 90% within 30 min with a reaction rate constant of 0.058 min −1 . Moreover, the cycling stability of the catalyst is excellent to withstand unchanged degradation efficiency for at least 5 cycles.

In this study, a photocatalysis-assisted adsorption process was proposed to remove a typical azo dye , Congo red (CR), from wastewater, using Ag 2 O. The organic dyes were adsorbed using Ag 2 O, and photodegraded in situ under visible light irradiation, thus, eliminating the desorption step. The results indicated that the maximal adsorption capacity of Ag 2 O for CR reached 180.8 mg/g at the initial CR concentration of 300 mg/L and pH 7. The adsorption of CR could be described using the Langmuir equation, and obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic expression. The CR adsorbed by Ag 2 O was completely photodegraded in 35 min to regenerate the Ag 2 O adsorbent under visible light irradiation, and only a slight decrease in the performance of Ag 2 O was observed after four cycles. This photocatalysis-assisted adsorption process could be extended to other azo dyes including acid orange 7 and amido black 10B , but could not be applied to non-azo dyes such as rhodamine B and methylene blue . This adsorption behavior difference was ascribed to the similar molecular orbital structures of Ag 2 O and azo dyes.
