To gain insights into the effect of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) on Mg corrosion in NaCl medium, in-situ Raman spectroscopy was employed to monitor the interface evolutions of Mg surface in NaCl and NaCl+SDBS solutions. Accompanied by ex-situ Raman, SEM and XPS results, the evolution models during Mg corrosion in corrosive media were established to reveal the influence of DBS − . Competitive adsorption models about the interface of Mg/NaCl+SDBS between DBS − and Cl − were also presented to explain the inhibition effect of SDBS. These models guide the optimal usage of SDBS in Mg alloy corrosion inhibition.

In this work, Mg/Al layered double hydroxides embedded phosphorylated cellulose microspheres (Mg/Al LDH@PCMs) were prepared first with solid-phase phosphorylation on CMs then in situ nano-assembly between Mg 2+ , Al 3+ and phosphate groups. Hence the synthesis degree of Mg/Al LDH was enhanced. The obtained Mg/Al LDH@PCMs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area test (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ζ potential, X-ray electron energy (XPS). The novel in situ nano-assembly method provided improved Mg/Al LDH load without compromising the porous structure of CMs, making Mg/Al LDH@PCMs suitable for water treatment. The Mg/Al LDH@PCMs adsorbed tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) with a kinetic pattern of pseudo second-order kinetic model, while isothermally fitted with the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum theory adsorption capacity of Mg/Al LDH@PCMs q m was 25.107 mg g −1 with the Gibbs free energy ∆G = 7.523 kJ mol −1 under 298 K. The TC removal mechanism was deeply investigated via characterization results and also the batch experimental results, it was inferred that electrostatic attraction between LDH particles and the anion species mainly dominated the adsorption process. These properties make Mg/Al LDH@PCMs have a wide application prospect in the water purification field.

A composite catalyst Fe@C was successfully prepared by chemical blowing and carbonization method, at the same time its defect level, pore distribution and specific surface area were investigated. In addition, the Mg–Ce–Y + x wt.% Fe@C ( x = 1, 3, 6, 10) composites also were synthesized by mechanical ball-milling. The effect of the Fe@C content on hydrogen absorption and desorption property of the Mg–Ce–Y alloy was characterized by XRD, SEM , TEM, PCI , and DSC method. The activated composites exhibit an excellent absorption and desorption kinetic performance, which attributeed to the efficient catalysis of Fe@C composite catalyst. The Mg–Ce–Y + 6 wt % Fe@C composite exhibits the fastest hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics and relatively lower decomposition temperature and it can absorb 90% of the maximum hydrogen capacity within 2 min and only takes 12 min to release the same amount of hydrogen under 300 °C. Besides, the dehydrogenation activation energy is reduced to 84.9 kJ/mol and the initial hydrogen release temperature is less than 250 °C, which is owing to the outstanding synergistic catalyst effect of Fe@C on Mg-based hydrogen storage alloy . However, the thermodynamic properties of the composites have not been improved, of which the enthalpy change is 80.6 kJ/mol.

Antimony enrichment in aquatic environments is of great concern to international community. High-temperature geothermal waters usually contain excessive Sb, which are apt to contaminate the groundwaters or surface waters used as drinking waters in and around a hydrothermal area. However, Sb removal from geothermal water is rarely documented and the effect of high temperature on Sb removal has not received much attention. In this study, batch sorption experiments were conducted to investigate Sb removal from water by a hydroxyl-intercalated, mechanochemically synthesized Mg-Fe-LDH (i.e. Mg-Fe-OH-LDH) capable of avoiding secondary pollutions commonly related to other Mg-Fe-LDH intercalated by undesirable anions, such as Cl − and NO 3 − . The sorption capacities of Mg-Fe-OH-LDH for Sb(III) and Sb(V) were up to 48.7 and 30.0 mg/g, respectively. Notably, Mg-Fe-OH-LDH performed even better in removing aqueous Sb(V) at higher temperatures, superior to sorption of Sb by iron oxides that is generally exothermic and tends to be inhibited by increasing reaction temperature. The removal of Sb(V) existing as Sb(OH) 6 − by Mg-Fe-OH-LDH was attributable to its exchange with interlayer hydroxyl, and therefore could be impaired to some degree by coexisting anions with stronger electronegativity or smaller ionic radii . In contrast, anion exchange didn't contribute so much to Sb(III) sorption, because the main Sb(III) species at pH < 10 is neutral Sb(OH) 3 . XPS analyses confirmed that inner-sphere complexation between sorbed Sb(III) and Fe on Mg-Fe-OH-LDH layers was formed, which was hardly affected by competitive anions. Mg-Fe-OH-LDH is promising to be practically applied in removing both Sb(III) and Sb(V) from contaminated natural waters, wastewaters, or geothermal waters potentially acting as a pollution source .

Mg-Li matrix composite containing Ni 0.4 Zn 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 2 O 4 (NZCF) was fabricated by multi-layer composite rolling (MCR). Anti-electromagnetic interference composites with multi-scale microstructure were obtained, in which Mg-9Li alloy serves as the reflecting layer and NZCF particles serve as the absorbing layer. The microstructure, electrical conductivity , magnetic property , and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding property of the composites were investigated. The results show that, with the increase of NZCF content, the electrical conductivity of the composites decreases, the magnetic property increases, and its shielding capability increases. The electrical conductivity and magnetic property of the composites can be regulated and controlled by adding nano-scale Ni-Zn-Co ferrites, which provides an efficient strategy for producing metal matrix composites with high EMI property.

The valence electron structure (VES) of MoSi 2 -based solid solution alloys was studied herein by the bond length difference (BLD) method based on the empirical electron theory (EET) of solids and molecules and the average atomic model. Compared to those for a MoSi 2 alloyed with Al or Mg separately, alloying with Mg + Al together significantly decreased the bond energy of the main bond branch and the ratio of the number of covalent valence electrons to the total number of valence electrons in the Mo(Si 0.92 Al x Mg 0.08- x ) 2 solid solutions and increased the lattice electrons. Thus, alloying MoSi 2 with Mg + Al together reduced the hardness and strength of MoSi 2 and increased its fracture toughness above what occurred when Mg or Al were added separately. The combined impact of the impurities was especially noticeable when MoSi 2 was alloyed with 4 at% Mg+4 at% Al. Based on those results, Mo(Si 0.92 Al x Mg 0.08- x ) 2 solid solution alloys were made, their mechanical properties were tested, and the experimental results were consistent with those of the theory.

A high-performance dye adsorbent of ultrathin dodecyl-sulfate (DS − ) intercalated Mg-Al layered double hydroxide nanosheets (DI-LDH Ns) were controllably synthesized by a simple one-step surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method. The unique intercalated structure with week interlayer interaction and high accessible surface of DI-LDH Ns provide efficient adsorption of methyl orange (MO), leading to its superior performance with much higher uptake capability (846.6 mg/g at 298 K) and less adsorbing equilibrium time (5 min) than those of ultrathin DS − -surface-modified Mg-Al-LDH nanosheets (DM-LDH Ns, 327.4 mg/g at 298 K, 120 min) and original Mg-Al-LDH (O-LDH, 208.2 mg/g at 298 K, 120 min). The composition and structure of these LDHs were investigated by systematic physicochemical characterization, such as XRD, TEM, FT-IR, BET and TGA. The adsorption behavior of DI-LDH Ns follows the Langmuir isotherm equation. A plausible mechanism is proposed to explain the adsorption process of such DI-LDH Ns, in which the synergistic contributions of surface and interlayer adsorption between DI-LDH Ns and MO play an important role. This study puts forward a new thought for the development of high-performance LDH adsorbents with an ultrathin intercalated structure for the efficient and rapid removal of dyes.

Agglomeration behavior of TiB 2 particles in 5%TiB 2 /Al-4.5%Cu composites (all compositions are in wt.% unless otherwise specified) is studied by adding different content of Mg to improve its strength and ductility, a widely used in-situ molten salt reaction process is used to produce the composites. The results show that addition of Mg could not only significantly segregate TiB 2 particles but also further refine the α-Al grains and then improve the mechanical properties of the composites on the basis of TiB 2 particles. Here, 0.5% Mg is considered the optimum mass fraction for dispersion, refinement, and modification of particles based on the results of investigation. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elastic Young’s modulus (EM), and Vicker’s hardness (VHN) of the composites in T6 heat treatment are increased to 375 MPa, 486 MPa, 88 GPa, and 167 HV - an improvement of 21.8%, 16.5%, 20.9%, and 9.4%, respectively, versus the original TiB 2 /Al-4.5%Cu composite (308 MPa, 417 MPa, 63 GPa, and 153 HV). The elongation of the composite is improved by 20.9%. These merits are mainly attributed to addition of Mg, which increases the surface-spread coefficient of TiB 2 particles by reducing the surface tension of the Al melt, thereby improving the wettability .

Nanostructured spinel-type M(M = Mg, Co, Zn)Cr 2 O 4 oxides with novel adsorbents for aqueous Congo red removal were synthesized by a polyacrylamide gel method and studied for their phase structure, microstructure, adsorption performance, and multiferroic behavior. The phase structure and purity analysis revealed that the nanostructured spinel-type M(M = Mg, Co, Zn)Cr 2 O 4 oxides presented a spinel-type cubic structure, and the formation of a secondary phase such as Cr 2 O 3 , MgO , ZnO, or Co 3 O 4 was not observed. The microstructure characterization confirmed that the spinel-type MCr 2 O 4 oxides grew from fine spherical particles to large rhomboid particles. Adsorption experiments of spinel-type MCr 2 O 4 oxides for adsorption of Congo red dye were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption capacity of the ZnCr 2 O 4 oxide (44.038 mg/g, pH 7, temperature 28 °C, initial dye concentration 30 mg/L) was found to be higher than that of MgCr 2 O 4 oxide (43.592 mg/g, pH 7, temperature 28 °C) and CoCr 2 O 4 oxide (28.718 mg/g, pH 7, temperature 28 °C). The effects of initial adsorbent concentration, initial dye concentration, pH, and temperature between the ZnCr 2 O 4 oxide and Congo red dye at which optimal removal occurs, were performed. The thermodynamic studies confirmed that a high temperature favors the adsorption of Congo red dye onto ZnCr 2 O 4 oxide studied. The nanostructured spinel-type M(M = Mg, Co, Zn)Cr 2 O 4 oxides that exhibited high adsorption performance for adsorption of Congo red dye can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of electrostatic interaction , pore filling, and ion exchange. The present work suggested that the nanostructured spinel-type M(M = Mg, Co, Zn)Cr 2 O 4 oxides have excellent adsorption performance and multiferroic behavior, which shows potential applications for removal of the Congo red dye from wastewater, magnetic memory recording media, magnetic sensor, energy collection and conversion device, and read/write memory.

Techniques for reutilization of the discarded bischofite are limited while efficient recovery of the Mg(OH) 2 nanoparticles from water during the synthesis and reuse processes is a challenge. In this study, the Fe 3 O 4 @Mg(OH) 2 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles were firstly prepared from discarded bischofite and used as catalyst for improving the ozonation of metronidazole (MNZ). The removal rate constant of MNZ increased by 694.7% using Fe 3 O 4 @Mg(OH) 2 . Compared with the Mg(OH) 2 control, the MNZ removal rate constant of Fe 3 O 4 @Mg(OH) 2 treatment was almost tripled. The persistent high catalytic activity of the Fe 3 O 4 @Mg(OH) 2 catalyst was observed since the MNZ removal rate constant decreased by just 13.2% in the third reuse run. The Fe 3 O 4 @Mg(OH) 2 primarily enhanced ozone decomposition through producing hydroxyl radicals . The MNZ removal rate constant increased from 0.075 min −1 to 0.643 min −1 as catalyst dose increased from 0 to 0.6 g L −1 while it decreased by 96.0% when its initial concentration increased from 10 to 200 mg L −1 . The maximum removal rate constant was observed at 25 °C when temperature increased from 15 °C to 35 °C. The Cl − , HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ ions could jeopardize MNZ degradation. The antibacterial activity of MNZ was eliminated after catalytic ozonation while the mineralization efficiency was almost doubled. The nitro group reduction and the cleavage of hydroxyethyl bond were two main transformation pathways of MNZ. These findings suggest that Fe 3 O 4 @Mg(OH) 2 nanoparticle made from discarded bischofite is the promising catalyst for the ozonation of antibiotics in the terms of water purification practice and reutilization of the bischofite.

In this work, in situ growth of thin layer and highly catalytic activity molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) was successfully synthesized by spatial confinement effect of Mg–Al layered double hydroxide (Simplified as LDH below). Due to the unique spatial confinement effect and electropositivity of the LDH layer, MoS 2 will controllable in situ grows along the surface of LDH layer, the MoS 2 synthesized in LDH tends to monolayer or thin layer instead of growing into a flower-like structure, this new strategy is different from vapor deposition, exfoliation and laser irradiation to prepare thin layer MoS 2 . Meanwhile, the conglomerate structure of LDH is opened and converted to thin layer by the growth of MoS 2 , too. The rich defects carried by thin layer LDH also help to improve the catalytic ability of MoS 2 . MoS 2 /LDH can absorb the light from ultraviolet to visible light region, The prepared MoS 2 /LDH composite was used as a photocatalytic material, and was found to be the best photocatalyst degrading about 96% of the MB solution (20 mg/L) after 180 min.

Mg-based batteries modulated by Li-salt additive can bypass the sluggish Mg solid diffusion at cathode side by kinetically better Li intercalation. However for this dual-salt system the highly electroactive cathodes endowed with high intrinsic conductivity and multi-electron transfer are still lacking, especially under large-sized grains and their high loading. Here a rhodizonate organic salt pre-pillared by K-ions (K 2 C 6 O 6 ) is proposed as high-rate cathode for Li-salt mediated Mg batteries. Under a high loading of 70 wt%, well-crystallized K 2 C 6 O 6 composed of ultra-large micro-sized grains (up to 30 μm) shows a reversible capacity more than 300 mA h/g at 0.1 C (based on three electron transfer), and up to 200, 130 and 60 mA h/g at 2 C, 5 C and 10 C respectively. The high bulk electron/ion conductivity and low solubility are responsible for such a superior performance based on fast Li-K electrochemical exchange and highly reversible Li intercalation without the assistance of nano-sizing, as a consequence of optimization and stabilization of desired electron structure and open framework by K-ion pre-supporting (instead of Li/Na-pillaring) and Mg-ion trapping between C 6 O 6 2- layers. These large monoliths of K 2 C 6 O 6 do not undergo serious grain fracture after long-term cycling, and at that time the Mg anode still remains compact and dendrite-free.
