MoS2-wrapped Mn0.2Cd0.8S nanospheres towards efficient photocatalytic H2 generation and CO2 reduction

Jiaqian Lu,Zhe Zhang,Lin Cheng,Hong Liu

Herein, a series of MoS2-wrapped Mn0.2Cd0.8S nanospheres with different MoS2 content were fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal route. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared MoS2/Mn0.2Cd0.8S composites for H2 production and reduction of CO2 under visible light irradiation was investigated. The results demonstrated that the ultra-thin MoS2 nanosheets were uniformly wrapped on the surface of cauliflower-like Mn0.2Cd0.8S nanospheres, and an intimate interfacial contact was formed between MoS2 and Mn0.2Cd0.8S. The MoS2/Mn0.2Cd0.8S hybrids exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with the pristine Mn0.2Cd0.8S. The optimal MoS2 loading content was determined to be 3.0 wt%, giving a H2 production rate of 335.02 μmol h−1 and a CH3OH production rate of 2.13 μmol h−1, which were around 5.1 and 5.4 times that of bare Mn0.2Cd0.8S, respectively. The superior photocatalytic activity was predominantly attributed to the intimate contacts between Mn0.2Cd0.8S and MoS2, which facilitated the transfer and separation of the photoexcited charge carriers. Moreover, the as-synthesized MoS2/Mn0.2Cd0.8S composites also showed excellent stability. This study demonstrates the great potential of MoS2-wrapped Mn0.2Cd0.8S as a noble-metal-free catalyst for photocatalytic energy conversion.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Exfoliation Bulk-Phase of MoS2 with Chitosan/Acetic Acid Solution

Yao Qiang,Guo Jing,Guan Fucheng,Zhao Miao,Zhang Sen,Tuo Xiaohang,Yang Qiang

As a transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) comprises individual sheets stacked into a bulk-phase structure. Compared with bulk-phase MoS 2 , the few-layer MoS 2 presents a two-dimensional nanostructure similar to graphene, which has the advantages of large specific surface area and many unsaturated vacancies in the edge layer and has broad application prospects in the fields of photoelectricity and catalysis. Here, a simple and practical method of exfoliating bulk-phase MoS 2 is proposed. The bulk-phase MoS 2 was sonicated using chitosan/acetic acid (CS/HAc) solution to obtain oligomeric MoS 2 . The raw materials used in this method have good biocompatibility, the preparation process and operation are simple, and the pollution caused to the environment is small, which meets the green chemical standard. The method provides a new idea and way for the peeling treatment of other laminated materials. The results show that the stacking of (002) crystal plane of MoS 2 samples after treatment with CS/HAc solution is reduced and the crystalline phase is changed from polycrystalline to single-crystal structure, which has great potential for applications in optical and electrical fields.

Friction reduction of water based lubricant with highly dispersed functional MoS2 nanosheets

Yongxia Wang,Yanyan Du,Jinan Deng,Zhaopeng Wang

Water based lubricant with superb features of low cost and good environmental compatibility, is considered to be a promising lubricating material. However, the poor lubrication properties of it greatly limit the practical application in a wide area. Two-dimensional MoS 2 nanosheets with special structural features and outstanding lubricating properties may be used as lubricant additives to enhance the tribological performance of water based lubricant. In this work, functional MoS 2 nanosheets modified with thiol molecules were obtained via a combined method of liquid exfoliation and thiol chemistry. The dispersion stability of the functional MoS 2 nanosheets in water were studied and the results showed that the nanosheets exfoliated by long sonication time could keep a stable dispersion over long periods of time. The results of tribological tests showed that the friction and antiwear properties of the water could be improved greatly with the addition of MoS 2 , and the water lubricant added with functional MoS 2 nanosheets had the best tribolgical properties. The low friction and improved antiwear of water could be attributed to the MoS 2 nanosheets which can be incessantly trapped between the contact junctions and then protect sliding surfaces. The enhanced tribological properties of the water lubricant with good dispersion stability of functional MoS 2 nanosheets may be useful for design of water lubricant with special surface characteristics of additives in the practical lubrication applications.

Few-Layered MoS2/ZnCdS/ZnS Heterostructures with an Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Jing Dong,Wenjian Fang,Hui Yuan,Weiwei Xia,Xianghua Zeng,Wenfeng Shangguan

Studies on highly efficient noble-metal-free catalysts are regarded as an important task for H2 production by water-splitting. MoS2/ZnCdS/ZnS dual heterostructures were successfully prepared with respective supernatant MoS2 colloidal solutions (called M/ZC/Z) and MoS2 precipitates (M(p)/ZC/Z). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the M/ZC/Z sample showed that ZnS nanosheets were decorated with ZnCdS nanorods and few-layered MoS2. Then, photocatalytic hydrogen production study was performed and the results showed that the M/ZC/Z sample has a H2 evolution rate of up to 79.3 mmol g–1 h–1 under visible light irradiation with an apparent quantum efficiency of 47.9% at 420 nm with noble-metal-free catalysts, which is nearly 5 times that of the M(p)/ZC/Z sample (15.7 mmol g–1 h–1) and approximately 9 times that of the ZC/Z sample (8.98 mmol g–1 h–1). Cycle tests showed that M/ZC/Z is stable and reusable. Without sacrificial agents, the production rates for hydrogen and oxygen evolution were obtained as 3.15 and 1.55 mmol g–1 h–1, respectively. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra revealed that the well-matched structure is effective in the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron and hole pairs, leading to the enhancement of the photocatalytic H2 production activity.

Engineering Phase Stability of Semimetallic MoS2 Monolayers for Sustainable Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Kunkun Nie,Xiaoyan Qu,Dongwei Gao,Binjie Li,Yanling Yuan,Qi Liu,Xinghua Li,Shaokun Chong,Zhengqing Liu

1T′-phase MoS2 possesses excellent electrocatalytic performance, but due to the instability of the thermodynamic metastable phase, its actual electrocatalytic effect is seriously limited. Here, we report a wet-chemical synthesis strategy for constructing rGO/1T′-MoS2/CeO2 heterostructures to improve the phase stability of metastable 1T′ phase MoS2 monolayers. Importantly, the rGO/1T′-MoS2/CeO2 heterostructure exhibits excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, which is much better than the 1T′-MoS2 monolayers. The synergistic effects between CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and 1T′-MoS2 monolayers were systematically investigated. 1T′-MoS2 monolayers combined with the cocatalyst of CeO2 NPs can produce lattice strain and distortion on 1T′-MoS2 monolayers, which can tune the energy band structure, charge transfer, and energy barriers of hydrogen atom adsorption (ΔEH), leading to promotion of the phase activity and stability of 1T′-MoS2 monolayers for hydrogen production. Our work offers a feasible method for the preparation of efficient HER electrocatalysts based on the engineering phase stability of metastable materials.

Optical identification of interlayer coupling of graphene/MoS2 van der Waals heterostructures

Yang Mingming,Wang Longlong,Hu Guofeng,Chen Xue,Gong Peng Lai,Cong Xin,Liu Yi,Yang Yuanbo,Li Xiaoli,Zhao Xiaohui,Liu Xuelu

The interlayer coupling in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures (vdWHs) is at the frontier of the fundamental research, underlying many optical behaviors. The graphene/MoS 2 vdWHs provide an ideal platform to reveal the good interfacial coupling between graphene and MoS 2 constituents. Here, three groups of graphene/MoS 2 vdWHs were prepared by transferring 1–3 layers of graphene onto monolayer MoS 2 . The interlayer coupling within graphene/MoS 2 vdWHs were characterized and analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and optical contrast (OC) spectroscopy. The upshift of the A 1g peak of MoS 2 and the upshift of the D and 2D peaks of SLG show that the electrons move from MoS 2 to graphene accompanied by the dielectric shielding effect on graphene. The weakened PL intensities and the slight red shift of A peak prove that the electrons move from MoS 2 to graphene meanwhile the recombination of hole and electron pairs is blocked in vdWHs. Our results deepen the understanding of the interlayer coupling of graphene/MoS 2 vdWHs and therefore provide guidelines for the practical design and application of optoelectronic devices based on graphene/MoS 2 vdWHs.

Catalytic Conversion of Sugars into Lactic Acid via a RuOx/MoS2 Catalyst

Zongling Li,Pengfei Wu,Jifeng Pang,Xianquan Li,Shangru Zhai,Mingyuan Zheng

The catalytic transformation of sugars into lactic acid has shown great potential for the scalable utilization of renewable biomass. Herein, RuOx/MoS2catalysts were synthesized with the assistance of CaO for the one-pot conversion of glucose to lactic acid. Under the reaction conditions of 120 °C and 1 MPa O2, a 96.6% glucose conversion and a 54.3% lactic acid selectivity were realized in the one-pot catalytic reaction, with relatively high stability after four successive cycles. This catalytic system was also effective for the conversion of many other carbohydrate substrates, such as fructose, xylose and cellulose (selectivity 68.9%, 78.2% and 50.6%, respectively). According to catalyst characterizations and conditional experiments, the highly dispersed RuOxspecies on the surface of MoS2, together with OH−, promoted isomerization, retro-aldol condensation, dehydration and hydration reactions, resulting in a relatively high lactic acid yield for sugar conversions. Keywords:glucose;catalyst;lactic acid;ruthenium;calcium

Identification of Co–O–Mo Active Centers on Co-Doped MoS2 Electrocatalyst

Meilan Pan,Xue Zhang,Chenglei Pan,Jiong Wang,Bingjun Pan

Strategies for harmonizing the construction of an active site and the building of electron transport for a hybrid MoS2 catalyst are crucial for its application in electrochemical reactions. In this work, an accurate and facile hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate the active center of Co–O–Mo on a supported MoS2 catalyst by forming a CoMoSO phase on the edge of MoS2, yielding (Co–O)x-MoSy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 1.5, or 2.1). The results show that the electrochemical performances (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical degradation) of the yielded MoS2-based catalysts were positively correlated with the Co–O bonds, verifying the significant role of Co–O–Mo as the active center. The fabricated (Co–O)-MoS0.9 presented an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope in both HER and OER, and it also demonstrated excellent BPA removal in the electrochemical degradation reaction. As compared with the Co–Mo–S configuration, the configuration of Co–O–Mo not only serves as the active center but also provides a conducting channel to facilitate electron conductivity with more accessible charge transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is favorable for electrocatalytic reaction. This work offers a new perspective for the active mechanism of metallic-heteroatom-dopant electrocatalysts and further boosts research on the development of noble/non-noble hybrid electrocatalysts in the future.

Modulating MoS2 nanostructure by vanadium incorporation for high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction

Hailu Fan,Kuo Cao,Jinxiao Ba,Hui Cheng,Xianghai Yu,Aiying Song,Chengqun Xu,Yihua Wang,Donghua Fan

In this work, we reported a facile approach to fabricate molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ) electrocatalyst with the introduction of vanadium(V) for improved catalytic performance. The morphology of prepared samples can be characterizated by SEM observation. The XRD and XPS spectra further reveal that the proper amount of vanadium introduction can effectively prompt the increase of crystallinity and formation of edge-terminated structure in MoS 2 nanostructure . The experimental results display that the morphology of MoS 2 can be modulated by various amounts of V incorporation. The conductivity of prepared samples is increased by incorporating a certain amount of graphene. MoS 2 nanostructure with 20% V incorporation shows excellent catalytic performance, and the corresponding mechanism is also discussed. The electrochemical performance of 20%V-MoS 2 can be further improved by the introduction of appropriate graphene. Compared with pure MoS 2 samples, 20%V-MoS 2 /Graphene 7.5 shows a small resistance and excellent cycling stability in the acidic electrolyte, as well as the overpotential at 10 mA decreases from 213 mV to 168 mV.

Nonlinear conductive performance and dielectric properties of MoS2 filled PEI matrix composite

Wang Haoyuan,Yang Luxi,Li Hengfeng

Field grading composites showing nonlinear conductive performance are usually applied to protection for electrical systems. In this work, polyetherimide (PEI) matrix composite films with field-dependent nonlinear conductive behavior were fabricated by using a typical type of transition metal dichalcogenides, MoS 2 as filler. The MoS 2 filled PEI composite film showed a nonlinear coefficient of 6.92 at a relatively low filler content of 15 phr, which is the percolation threshold of this kind of composite film. Nonlinear conductive behavior of the MoS 2 /PEI composites was driven by tunneling effect. Conductivity of the 20 phr of MoS 2 filled composite film increased for almost 3 magnitudes within 20 kV/mm. Enhanced dielectric constant was brought to PEI by the MoS 2 fillers. The PEI containing 20 phr of MoS 2 showed a dielectric constant of 6.1 at 1 kHz with dielectric loss still being low. This work revealed the potential of MoS 2 being adopted as filler of field grading composites.

MoS2/Au Heterojunction Catalyst for SERS Monitoring of a Fenton-like Reaction

Qian Wei,Beibei Lu,Qing Yang,Can Shi,Yulan Wei,Minmin Xu,Chenjie Zhang,Yaxian Yuan

Fenton technology is one of advanced oxidation process (AOP) methods to treat wastewater through chemical oxidation. Due to the limitations of classical iron-based catalysts, it is still challenging to find suitable catalysts for Fenton-like reactions. Here, MoS2/Au heterojunctions were successfully synthesized by reduction of chloroauric acid in the solution of layered MoS2prepared by hydrothermal method. As a model molecule, methylene blue (MB) was used as the species to be degraded to evaluate the performance of the catalyst. It was determined by UV–visible spectra that the optimal catalyst can be obtained when MoS2(mg): HAuCl4(wt. % mL) is 2:2. The Fenton-like reaction process was monitored by introducing highly sensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results show that MB can be degraded by 83% in the first 10 min of the reaction, indicating that MoS2/Au has good catalytic performance. In addition, as a fingerprint spectrum, SERS was used to preliminarily analyze the molecular structure changes during the degradation process. The result showed that C-N-C bond was easier to break than the C-S-C bond. NH2group and the fused ring were destroyed at the comparable speed at the first 30 min. In terms of application applicability, it was showed that MB degradation had exceeded 95% at all the three pH values of 1.4, 5.0, and 11.1 after the reaction was carried out for 20 min. The test and analysis of the light environment showed that the catalytic efficiency was significantly improved in the natural light of the laboratory compared to dark conditions. The possible mechanism based on ·OH and ·O2−from ESR data was proposed. In addition, it was demonstrated to be a first-order reaction from the perspective of kinetics. This study made a positive contribution to broaden of the applicable conditions and scope of Fenton-like reaction catalysts. It is expected to be used as a non-iron catalyst in practical industrial applications. From the perspective of detection method, we expect to develop SERS as a powerful tool for the in situ monitoring of Fenton-like reactions, and to further deepen our understanding of the mechanism.Keywords:MoS2/Au heterojunctions;Fenton-like reaction;methylene blue;surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy
