The controlled introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in photocatalysts has been demonstrated to be an efficient approach for improving the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and thus, for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. In this study, a two-step calcination method where ZIF-8 was used as the precursor was explored for the synthesis of ZIF-8-derived ZnO nanoparticles with gradient distribution of OVs. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements indicated that the concentration of OVs in the samples depended on the temperature treatment process. Ultraviolet–visible spectra supported that the two-step calcined samples presented excellent light-harvesting ability in the ultraviolet-to-visible light range. Moreover, it was determined that the two-step calcined samples presented superior photocatalytic performance for the removal of NO , and inhibited the generation of NO 2 . These properties could be attributed to the contribution of the OVs present in the two-step calcined samples to their photocatalytic performance. The electrons confined by the OVs could be transferred to O 2 to generate superoxide radicals, which could oxidize NO to the final product, nitrate. In particular, the NO removal efficiency of Z 350-400 (which was a sample first calcined at 350 °C for 2 h, then at 400 °C for 1 h) was 1.5 and 4.6 times higher than that of Z 400 (which was one-step directly calcined at 400 °C) and commercial ZnO, respectively. These findings suggested that OV-containing metal oxides that derived from metal-organic framework materials hold great promise as highly efficient photocatalysts for the removal of NO.

FeII(EDTA) solution has been considered an efficient option in wet flue gas denitrification, whereas the generated FeII(EDTA)–NO restricts its wide application, suggesting that FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction is the key to this process. This work investigated the performance, kinetics, and mechanism of FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction by Mn powder coupled with manganese ion (Mn2+) recovery. We initially studied the performance of FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction with respect to the major influencing factors (i.e., the particle size of Mn powder, initial FeII(EDTA)–NO concentration, Mn powder concentration, stirring speed, and temperature). Shrinking core model and Arrhenius law were applied to illustrate the kinetics and mechanism between FeII(EDTA)–NO solution and Mn powder, suggesting that the solid–liquid reaction was fitted on chemical reaction control, and the activation energy was calculated as 43.0 kJ mol–1. The effects of main operating parameters, such as precipitant concentration, pH value, and temperature, were studied on Mn2+ recovery. Results indicated that the pseudo-second-order model could precisely describe the kinetics of Mn2+ recovery. Finally, according to Arrhenius and Eyring–Polanyi equations, the reaction activation energy, enthalpy of activation, and entropy of activation for Mn2+ recovery were calculated as 17.25 kJ mol–1, 14.55 kJ mol–1, and 252.07 J (k mol)−1, respectively.

This paper reported the feasibility of a supercritical water synthesis route (referred as CHFS) in the application of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH 3 . A series of well-reported Ce x TiO 2 SCR catalysts were synthesized and then subjected to a range of characterizations (e.g. XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR, HADDF, etc.). Experimental results revealed that the unusual and rapid crystallizing environment of the CHFS route had resulted in a highly dispersed CeO 2 and a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) for Ce x TiO 2 catalysts, which promoted the enriched surface oxygen vacancies and facilitated the formation of NO 2 and nitrite species over the catalyst surface, effectively enhancing their SCR performances. Amongst the developed Ce x TiO 2 catalysts, Ce 0.25 TiO 2 revealed the highest SCR activity with more than 90% NO conversion being achieved in a broad temperature range of 240–440 °C. Such broad temperature window was proven due to the SMSI, which lowered the NH 3 oxidation ability of CeO 2 , retaining the effective utilization of NH 3 throughout the SCR process. The work conducted herein demonstrates the feasibility of the CHFS route in the syntheses of SMSI catalysts for SCR application and also explores the SCR reaction mechanism over the well-reported Ce x TiO 2 catalysts. We expected that this work could shed some lights on the development of feasible preparative routes for the syntheses of advanced SMSI catalysts for SCR application.

NO is a common harmful air pollutant which leads to various environmental and health problems and needs to be addressed urgently. Herein, by combining sol-gel method and microfluidic approach, we successfully developed novel hollow alginate microfibers containing CNT/TiO 2 photocatalysts. The resulting fibers, with diameter of 1000 μm and adjustable wall thickness of 60–150 µm, were confirmed through microscope and SEM. The formation condition about various flow rate ratios of different phases was also investigated. Subsequently, various characterization methods including XRD, FT-IR and XPS were employed to investigate structural properties of prepared CNT/TiO 2 hybrid materials. Our findings indicate that the boosted absorption ability towards the visible light region, improved photo-generated electron transfer efficiency, as confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance respectively, mainly account for the enhanced photocatalytic performance in NO oxidation. The optimized CNT(10 %)/TiO 2 microfibers exhibited the best NO removal efficiency of 44.3 % under visible light, which is 1.59 times that of the pure TiO 2 . This study represents an interesting case for the combined preparation of CNT/TiO 2 /alginate microfibers for NO abatement.

The emergence of treatment approaches that integrate conventional phototherapy with additional adjuvant treatments has garnered considerable interest. In this study, we proposed a complex utilizing Fe and polydopamine as a carrier, co-loaded with the nitric oxide initiator L-arginine (L-Arg) and the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG), as a potential strategy for the “photothermal/photodynamic/Chemodynamic/nitric oxide gas therapy” of osteosarcoma. Nanoparticles have the ability to undergo degradation within the mildly acidic conditions present in the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, the resulting release of Fe ions facilitates the consumption of hydrogen peroxide through Fenton/Fenton-like reactions, thereby generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that possess potent cytotoxic properties. L-Arg can also be catalyzed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) or NO synthase overexpressed in cancer cells to generate NO, which is not only used for gas therapy (GT), but also as a biological messenger to regulate vasodilation to relieve tumor hypoxia. More importantly, the addition of low-dose near-infrared laser can not only promote the efficiency of the above two reactions, but also achieve PTT/PDT and obtain good synergistic tumor treatment effects. The anti-tumor efficacy of nanoparticles was verified in the 143B mouse osteosarcoma model. This “PTT/PDT/CDT/GT” strategy expands bone tumor treatment options through nanoparticle-mediated enhanced therapy.

It is still challenging to design stimuli-responsive smart hydrogel dressing to promote bacteria-infected diabetic wound healing from the whole healing stage by intelligently responding to external stimuli or wound microenvironment. In addition, nitric oxide (NO) and oxygen (O 2 ) have been shown to accelerate diabetic wound healing by promoting angiogenesis and alleviating hypoxia. A series of NIR/glucose stimuli-responsive multifunctional smart hydrogels with NO/O 2 dual gas-releasing properties was designed based on N-carboxyethyl chitosan-grafted-phenylboronic acid (CECP), oxidized dextran (OD), ε-polylysine (EPL)-coated manganese dioxide (EMn), and β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide/N, N’-di-sec-butyl-N, N’-dinitroso-1,4-phenylenediamine (rGB) via dual dynamic crosslinking to promote bacteria-infected diabetic wound healing. The added rGB and EMn as photothermal agents rapidly kill bacteria through photothermal therapy. Meanwhile, rGB endows CECP/OD/EMn/rGB hydrogels to release NO under NIR stimulation to promote angiogenesis. Nanozyme EMn with catalase (CAT)/superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity can scavenge ROS and release O 2 to alleviate hypoxia and oxidative stress. The phenylboronic acid in CECP forming phenylboronate ester structure endows hydrogel with glucose-controlled release of doxycycline. NIR/glucose stimuli-responsive CECP/OD/EMn/rGB hydrogels with NO/O 2 dual gas-releasing property in a full-thickness skin wound-infected diabetic model reduced the inflammation, promoted wound contraction, collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and alleviated wound hypoxia, providing new ideas for treating bacteria-infected diabetic wounds.

Under mild continuous-flow gas-solid conditions, the direct conversion of gaseous nitric oxide (NO) in flue gas to pure ammonia (NH 3 ) is hindered by the challenges of sustaining continuous proton-electron coupling and transfer. Here, we develop a PtO x -TiO 2 photocatalyst featuring ultrafine PtO x clusters that sustain continuous electron transfer via dynamic PtO x /PtO ( x−δ ) redox cycling. Upon illumination, PtO x continuously captures photogenerated electrons to form PtO ( x−δ ) and injects them into NO antibonding orbitals, while the PtO x -TiO 2 interface simultaneously drives H 2 O dissociation to provide a steady proton flux. This persistent electron-proton coupling orchestrated by PtO x /PtO ( x−δ ) cluster interface promotes exciton dissociation, interfacial charge separation, and stepwise hydrogenation of NO to NH 3 . Under continuous-flow conditions with 200 ppm NO, PtO x -TiO 2 achieves 76.0% NO conversion, 808.25 mmol m −2 h −1 NH 3 yield, and 98.1% selectivity, representing a 9.1-fold enhancement over pristine TiO 2 and representing the current best performance in the gas-solid phase NO reduction for NH 3 synthesis. In situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the exceptional activity mainly stems from the facilitated electron-proton coupled transfer via the unique role of PtO x /PtO ( x−δ ) cluster. This work establishes a practical strategy for sustainable NO abatement with green NH 3 production without separation in gas-solid systems.

The construction of CN/UiO-67 (CNU) S-scheme heterojunction composites through in situ formation of UiO-67 on carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) helps to address the limitations of carbon nitride (CN) in photocatalytic NO elimination. The optimized CNU 3 demonstrates superior photocatalytic efficiency, which is attributed to electronic channels constructed by Zr-N bonds and S-scheme electron transport mechanism, effectively promoting the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers with high redox potentials. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal redistributed electronic orbitals in CNU 3 , with progressive and continuous energy levels near the Fermi level, which bolsters electronic conduction. Comprehensive quenching experiments, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), and in situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses highlight a synergistic interplay of electrons, holes, and superoxide radicals in CNU 3 , inhibiting the generation of toxic nitrogen oxide intermediates and culminating in highly efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation. This study not only elucidates the mechanisms underpinning the enhanced performance of CNU 3 heterojunctions but also offers new perspectives on the preparation and interfacial charge separation of heterojunction photocatalysts.

Camellia sinensis var. assamica is a major variety used to produce black tea. However, the core compounds influencing its aroma quality are unknown. In this study, Yinghong No. 9 black tea (YJBT), a distinctive black tea in South China, was analyzed. We detected 44 aroma compounds and identified seven key contributors, namely linalool, geraniol, trans -linalool oxide (furanoid), hexanal, methyl jasmonate, phenylacetaldehyde, and β-ionone. Linalool, which was generally more abundant in spring tea than in summer tea, contributed significantly to sweet and floral aromas. ( R )-Linalool was the primary linalool form in Yinghong No. 9, wherein it was highly abundant in high-quality tea leaves. The substantial expression of a linalool synthase gene and the relatively high catalytic efficiency of the encoded enzyme likely contributed to the accumulation of ( R )-linalool. This study identified the primary aroma compounds in YJBT, providing a foundation for advancing our knowledge of the aromatic quality of black tea.

The development of single chiral source-derived ligands to fine-switch enantioselectivity has continuously attracted the attention in asymmetric catalysis. Herein, we use the same chiral source L-prolinamide as the starting material, synthesizing chiral bidentate pyridine-type N-oxide ligands (denoted as Py-NO) and chiral monodentate phenyl N-oxide ligands (denoted as Ph-NO); their effectiveness was demonstrated in the switch of enantioselectivity in palladium(II)-catalysed Friedel-Crafts (FC) alkylation of indoles and 2,3-dioxopyrrolidines, and both enantiomers of structurally important indole derivatives can be prepared in good yields (up to 91% yield) and high enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee). Key to the success of switch of enantioselectivity is the existence of two different activation patterns in this palladium(II) catalytic system. Experiments demonstrated that a counteranion would plausibly coordinate to the palladium(II) center in the stereoselectivity-determining step. Preliminary mechanistic studies provide a rational explanation for the above observations. This study was the first example of monodentate ligand in asymmetric catalytic Friedel-Crafts alkylation.

Prunus salicina ‘Wushan plum’ is a climacteric fruit, which rapidly ripens under the action of ethylene after harvesting, resulting in quality deterioration that seriously restricts the sustainable development of the industry. In order to examine the potential role of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, the donor of exogenous H 2 S) in slowing down the ripening and senescence process of plum fruit, the changes in storage quality, antioxidant capacity, endogenous signals and gene expression levels were evaluated during storage at 25 °C for twelve days. The results indicated that NaHS treatment delayed the coloration of plum fruit and maintained higher firmness, titratable acid content (TA) and marketable fruit rate. Treatment with NaHS increased the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX); promoted the accumulation of total phenols (TP) and ascorbic acid (AsA), and inhibited the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity, which in turn alleviated oxidative damage. H 2 S treatment down-regulated the expression of PsACO1 and PsACS1 and inhibited the production of ethylene; up-regulated the expression of PsSiR , PsSAT , PsOASTL, and PsLCD , which in turn elevated the activities of sulfite reductase (SiR), serine acetyltransferase (SAT), O-acetylserine cleavage lyase (OASTL), and L-cysteine desulfurylase (LCD), and facilitated the accumulation of the endogenous H 2 S content; up-regulated the expression of L-Arginine synthesis-related genes and PsNOA , which increased the content of L-Arginine as well as the activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and facilitated the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO). The above results indicated that NaHS could improve the antioxidant system, endogenous H 2 S, ethylene, and NO metabolism of plum, thus maintaining the storage quality of the fruit.

Oral mucosal wounds are more prone to inflammation due to direct exposure to various microorganisms. This can result in pain, delayed healing, and other complications, affecting patients' daily activities such as eating and speaking. Consequently, the overall quality of life for patients is significantly reduced. To address these challenges, we developed a multifunctional therapeutic nanoplatform, DATS@Arg-EA-SA, through the self-assembly of guanidinated dendritic peptides (Arg-EA-SA) that encapsulate diallyl trisulfide (DATS), a hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) donor. The guanidine-rich surface of DATS@Arg-EA-SA efficiently neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the ulcer microenvironment, generating nitric oxide (NO), which acts as the primary antimicrobial agent by disrupting bacterial membranes. Concurrently, the presence of glutathione triggers the release of H 2 S from DATS, providing supplementary antibacterial support. DATS@Arg-EA-SA effectively kills all bacteria, achieving results comparable to those of penicillin, a classical antibiotic. Moreover, it demonstrates superior sterilization efficacy against drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), significantly outperforming penicillin. Following the initial antimicrobial phase, the nanoplatform transitions into an anti-inflammatory stage. H 2 S, in synergy with NO, facilitates the conversion of M1 macrophages to M2 macrophages, thereby reducing the expression of inflammatory factors. Importantly, the combination of H 2 S and NO provides effective analgesia by downregulating the expression of TRPV1 and TRPV4, thus restoring normal dietary behaviors and improving the overall quality of life. This system ultimately promotes collagen fiber deposition and accelerates the re-epithelialization of the ulcer wound, positioning DATS@Arg-EA-SA as a promising gas-delivery nanoplatform for rapid wound repair in the clinical treatment. Statement of Significance Oral mucosal wounds are highly susceptible to microbial infections, leading to inflammation, pain, delayed healing, and a significant decline in quality of life. We developed a multifunctional therapeutic nanoplatform (DATS@Arg-EA-SA) via the self-assembly of guanidinated dendritic peptides encapsulating the H 2 S donor DATS, which exhibited antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. In the oral ulcer microenvironment, DATS@Arg-EA-SA generates substantial NO under elevated ROS levels, while glutathione triggers the controlled release of H 2 S. NO disrupts bacterial membranes as the primary antibacterial agent, with H 2 S providing synergistic antibacterial effects. Furthermore, H 2 S and NO synergistically promote the transformation of M1 to M2 macrophages, attenuating inflammation. Importantly, the combined action of H 2 S and NO alleviates pain by downregulating TRPV1 and TRPV4, supporting the restoration of normal dietary behavior and improving quality of life.
