Herein, we reported two alkali metal molybdenum(VI) iodates, namely, NaMoO 3 (IO 3 ) and γ-KMoO 3 (IO 3 ) with 1D and 3D [MoO 3 (IO 3 )] − anionic architectures, respectively. The novel 1D chain in NaMoO 3 (IO 3 ) and the 3D network in γ-KMoO 3 (IO 3 ) are constructed by the 0D Λ-shaped cis -[MoO 4 (IO 3 ) 2 ] 4− building units interconnected by bridging IO 3 − anions as well as the corner-sharing of oxo anions. Importantly, the polar γ-KMoO 3 (IO 3 ) exhibits a very large second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect of 12 × KH 2 PO 4 (KDP) under 1064 nm laser radiation, a high laser-Induced damage threshold value (52 × AgGaS 2 ), and a moderate birefringence of 0.087@1064 nm, whereas the centrosymmetric NaMoO 3 (IO 3 ) has a large birefringence of 0.208@1064 nm. This study further proves the useful route of exploring promising optical materials via assembling the 0D basic building units into higher dimensional anionic architectures.

P2-Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 is considered a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. However, its practical application is still hindered by sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics and structural degradation caused by repeated Na + intercalation/deintercalation during cycling. Herein, by transforming the precursor structure from olive-like hierarchical structure to the peanut-like hierarchical structure, and finally to a microsphere-like hierarchical structure, a P2-Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 cathode material with a hollow hierarchical microsphere structure was obtained. This unique structure shortens Na + diffusion pathways, facilitates electrolyte infiltration, and effectively buffers volume variation during cycling. ICP-MS results indicate that the optimized sample has a relatively higher Na content, which may contribute to a higher charge capacity. SEM and XRD analyses after cycling reveal that the hollow hierarchical microsphere cathode suppresses particle fragmentation and structural degradation, while ex-situ XRD confirms its improved structural reversibility during charge/discharge. Intermittent current titration and multi-sweep cyclic voltammetry further demonstrate higher Na + diffusion coefficients. As a result, the optimized cathode delivers 79.3 mA h g −1 at 10C, corresponding to 76% of the capacity at 0.1C, and 75% higher than that of the olive-like cathode. It also achieves stable cycling for 2000 cycles at 5C, with capacity retentions of 87.51%, 76.83%, and 63.67% after 500, 1000, and 2000 cycles.

The role of Na-content on the structural stability and electrochemical performance of P2/O3-type cathode was established. • The structural stability of P2/O3-type Na x Ni 0.23 Mn 0.57 Fe 0.1 Cu 0.1 O 2 cathode is improved by Cu/Fe co-doping. • High Na-content improves the Na⁺ diffusion coefficient as well as rate performance of Na x Ni 0.23 Mn 0.57 Fe 0.1 Cu 0.1 O 2 cathode. P2/O3 biphasic layered oxide cathodes combine the structural stability and fast Na + transport of the P2 phase with the high Na + storage capacity, high operating voltage of the O3 phase. In order to deeply investigate the effect of P2/O3 biphasic composition on the electrochemical performance, Na x Ni 0.23 Mn 0.57 Cu 0.1 Fe 0.1 O 2 samples (NMCF- x ) with the tunable P2/O3 biphasic composition were prepared. The X-ray diffraction results show that the relative ratio of O3 phase increases from 48.53% to 84.46% with increasing Na content from x = 0.70 to x = 0.85. The O3 phase-rich NMCF-0.85 cathode exhibits high rate performance (130.1 and 94.6 mAh g –1 at 0.2C and 5C, respectively) and high capacity retention (69.8% after 500 cycles at 5C). The galvanostatic intermittent titration analysis confirms that the Na + diffusion coefficient reaches as high as 6.99 × 10 –11 cm 2 s –1 . These excellent performances are ascribed to the fact that Cu/Fe co-doping and high Na content suppress the unfavorable P2-O2 phase transition and Na + /vacancy ordering in the NMCF-0.85 when charged to high potential. Thus, this finding can provide profound implications for developing stable layered oxide cathode materials with adjustable P2/O3 biphase for high-energy Na + storage. Cu/Fe co-doping P2/O3 hybrid layered oxide cathodes for SIBs have been prepared through adjusting Na-content, revealing the influence of P2/O3 composition to cycling performance. Sluggish kinetics and shuttle effects hinder high-energy rechargeable sodium-chalcogen batteries, requiring nanostructured positive electrodes with excess conductive additives. Here, we show that an acidic binder-induced corrosion strategy enables activity in bulk S/Se/Te positive electrodes. Carboxylic acid-rich binders create an acidic microenvironment (pH≈3) during processing, triggering spontaneous formation of copper chalcogenide interlayers on Cu current collectors. These interlayers reconstruct into active Cu 2 X (X = S/Se/Te) catalysts during cycling. Using Na-Se batteries, experimental and DFT analyses confirm Cu 2 Se reduces the liquid-solid conversion barrier by ~24.1% and accelerates polyselenides conversion. Polar groups in the binders enhance chemisorption, reducing the shuttling effect. Consequently, bulk Se with alginic acid binder achieves 96% theoretical utilization at 0.1 A g ‒1 , rate capability of 508 mAh g ‒1 at 20 A g ‒1 , stable cyclability at 5 A g ‒1 over 16,000 cycles, and low-temperature operation at 0.1 A g ‒1 (94% capacity retention at −20 °C). The strategy of transforming binders into active interface modulators provides a generalizable approach for other chalcogens, enabling practical and host-free rechargeable metal batteries with chalcogen positive electrodes.

To address the limitations of TiO 2 as promising material that can provide photocathodic protection (PCP) for metals, a novel technique of photo-assisted electrochemical doping (PED) is developed to prepare Na-doped TiO 2 . Introducing light irradiation during electrochemical doping at an appropriate voltage leads to higher incorporation of sodium into TiO 2 , as well as the generation of more oxygen vacancies and Ti 3+ defects. These changes result in a narrower bandgap, enhanced photogenerated electron-hole separation, and faster electron transfer, ultimately improving the PCP performance of the materials. The mechanism of PED has been analyzed. The Na-doped TiO 2 prepared via PED at the optimal voltage of -1.4 V vs. SCE exhibits a photocurrent density of 180 µA/cm 2 and an open-circuit potential of -0.408 V when coupled with 316 stainless steel (316 SS) in simulated seawater without a hole scavenger. These values provide more effective cathodic protection for 316 SS than those obtained with pristine TiO 2 or with Na-doped TiO 2 prepared via conventional electrochemical doping in the absence of light. This work offers a facile and effective strategy to improve the doping reaction efficiency for preparing Na-doped TiO 2 through electrochemistry method.

P2/O3-type Ni/Mn-based layered oxides are regarded as promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their high energy density. However, their practical application is limited by low initial Coulombic efficiency, sluggish Na+kinetics, transition-metal dissolution/migration and irreversible phase transitions during cycling. Herein, a controlled P2 phase was achieved through elemental ratio regulation, enabling systematic synthesis of a series of NaxNi0.4Co0.1Mn0.5O2(x-NCMO) materials with tailored P2/O3 ratios. The optimized composition (x = 0.8), containing 16.6% P2 and 83.4% O3 phases, achieves an optimal phase equilibrium, thereby maximizing the synergistic coupling between the two layered polymorphs. This biphasic architecture demonstrates significantly enhanced Na+transport kinetics and exceptional electrochemical performance, high initial capacity of 168.65 mAh g−1and excellent rate performance, maintaining 84.88 mAh g−1at 10 C, outperforming most reported P2/O3 biphasic cathodes. Structural analysis and electrochemical analysis reveal that elemental ratio regulation modulates the TM–O electronic structure, promotes electronic transport, and accelerates Na+migration. These effects collectively reduce polarization, stabilize the structure, and thereby improve rate capability and long-term cycling capacity retention. This work provides an effective design strategy for designing high-performance layered oxide cathodes with improved structural and interfacial stability.

Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide from water is regarded as an environmentally benign technology for energy storage and supply. Herein, a disordered K&Na-C 3 N 5 photocatalyst co-intercalated with K + &Na + and modified by cyano/hydroxyl groups is successfully fabricated via alkali-activated thermal-polymerization. Alkali activation effectively anchors cyano and hydroxyl active groups on the surface: hydroxyl groups enhance the material's hydrophilicity and promote proton transfer, while cyano groups exhibit electron-attracting characteristics to localize photogenerated electrons. Simultaneously, interlayer intercalation of K + &Na + forms electron transport channels, synergistically facilitating surface proton transfer and optimizing charge distribution. This multi-component modification strategy significantly enhances the adsorption capacity of O 2 , effectively modulates the 2e − ORR pathway, and improves the selectivity of H 2 O 2 , demonstrating its excellent bifunctional properties. Experimental data show that the optimally alkali-activated K 3 &Na 3 -C 3 N 5 achieves a remarkably high H 2 O 2 production rate of 26,920.49 μmol g −1 ·h −1 — a 90.3-fold increase over unmodified C 3 N 5 . This work pioneers alkali activation as a universal and scalable paradigm for engineering surface-active sites to enable performance amplification through functional group-metal ion cooperativity, and it provides a design blueprint for advanced carbon nitride-based photocatalysts to boost H 2 O 2 fuel cell performance.

Heterostructured anode materials have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their ability to optimize interfacial structures between different components. This design not only facilitates the formation of stable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films but also enhances the overall electrochemical performance, including battery capacity and cycle stability. In this study, a novel N -doped carbon-modified NiSe 2 /FeSe 2 heterostructure combined with carbon nanotubes (NC@NFS/CNTs) composite was successfully synthesized via co-precipitation and gas-phase selenization. This material was subsequently applied as an anode for Na-ion batteries (NIBs). Based on the synergistic effect of the interfacial properties of the heterostructure and the highly conductive nature of CNTs, the NC@NFS/CNTs composite exhibited excellent electrochemical stability and superior long-term durability. The battery retains a capacity of 332.4 mAh g −1 after 5000 charge/discharge cycles a current density of 5 A g −1 . Moreover, the capacity retention rate remains as high as 77 % even after 10,000 cycles at an ultra-high current density of 40 A g −1 . Ex-situ XPS and XRD analyses, along with low-temperature EIS tests, demonstrate that the Na + storage properties of the NC@NFS/CNTs electrode are significantly enhanced. This improvement is primarily attributed to the heterojunction structure and the presence of highly conductive phases (CNTs and N -doped carbon layers), which effectively improve the electrode’s kinetic performance and enhance the stability of the SEI film.

Fast charging rate and large energy storage are key requirements for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in electric vehicles. Developing electrode materials with high volumetric and gravimetric capacity that could be operated at a high rate is the most challenging problem. In this work, a general multi-interface strategy toward densified carbon materials with enhanced comprehensive electrochemical performance for Li/Na-ion batteries is proposed. The mixture of graphene oxide and sucrose solution is sprayed into a water/oil system and furtherly carbonized to get graphene/hard carbon spheres (GHSs). In this material, abundant ingenious internal interfaces between the crystalline graphene and the carbon matrix are created inside the hard carbon spheres. The constructed interfaces can not only work as a pathway for the escape of volatile gas generated during sucrose pyrolysis to prevent the formation of abundant pores, which leads high packing density of 0.910 g cm –3 and low surface area of 13.3 m 2 g –1 , but can also provide a conductive “highway” for ions and electrons. When used as the anode material for both LIBs and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the GHS shows the high gravimetric/volumetric reversible capacities, high-rate performance, and low temperature properties simultaneously, implying the great potential application in practical LIBs and SIBs.

In this work, the water activities of the NaCl–CaCl2–H2O and KCl–CaCl2–H2O ternary systems and of their sub-binary systems NaCl–H2O and KCl–H2O were measured using an isopiestic method at 323.15 K. The isopiestic composition line for the NaCl–CaCl2–H2O system was found to obey the Zdanovskii rule very well, whereas the KCl–CaCl2–H2O system deviated slightly. The addition of NaCl to an aqueous solution of CaCl2 decreased its water activity for all CaCl2 molalities. However, KCl was found to decrease and increase the water activity at low and high CaCl2 molality, respectively. The turning point appears at 8.0 mol·kg–1 CaCl2 solution. The Pitzer–Simonson–Clegg (PSC) model was applied to represent the water activity of the two ternary systems, and the calculated results are discussed.

The precise mapping of temperature distributions with laser-induced imaging is critical across diverse fields, from microelectronics to energy storage and biomedical engineering. Herein, phase-selective growth is conducted in a non-vacuum sulfur-rich environment, where NaGd 1-x Er x S 2 (NaGdS 2 -E x ) phosphors with high-efficiency up-conversion luminescence are successfully prepared. The ordered segregation of Er 3+ within the GdS 6 layers effectively suppresses non-radiative relaxation, producing a nonlinear quantum yield enhancement driven by an explosive surge in photon output upon increasing excitation power, which enables anti-stokes photon imaging. Furthermore, the microcrystals are successfully incorporated into NaGdS 2 -E x @polyacrylonitrile-polyurethane (NaGdS 2 -E x @PAN-TPU) membranes via electrospinning, achieving 2D fixation while preserving high luminescence efficiency, thereby expanding the application adaptability. Remarkably, the design of a thermally and non-thermal coupled upconverting based on the NaGdS 2 -E x @PAN-TPU system results in highly sensitive temperature sensing, achieving maximum relative sensitivities of 1.069 and 0.475% K −1 at 313 K. These findings provide a flexible platform, particularly for its potential in real-time visual thermometry within micro-nano electronic devices, while also paving the way for laser identification in maritime search and rescue operations.

Low-grade heat widely exists in nature and industry processes. Due to the lack of effective recovery technologies, a large amount of low-grade heat is wasted. Thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle (TREC) system can efficiently convert low-grade heat into electrical energy. However, the low power density limits the practical application of TREC system. To improve the power density and heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency, a TREC system with Na/K mixed electrolytes (4 M sodium nitrate [NaNO 3 ] + 1 M potassium nitrate [KNO 3 ]) is proposed. When the temperature difference of the system is 34°C (between 46 °C and 12 °C), the heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency can be as high as 3.9% (relative Carnot efficiency of 36.4%). At the current density of 40.16 mA/g , the power density can reach 23.29 mW/g, increasing to 6.5 times of conventional system, which is the highest level in TREC system. The comprehensive results of electrochemical test and elemental analysis show that K + has superior electrochemical reaction characteristics. The proposed sodium/potassium (Na/K) mixed electrolyte system improves the power density and heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency by reducing the voltage hysteresis and increasing the operating current and voltage.
