Quantum yields of indirect UVC photodegradation of p -arsanilic acid (a widely used phenylarsonic feed additive) caused by the photolysis of humic substances were measured. The acquired results demonstrate that the efficiency of such decomposition of p -arsanilic acid is comparable with that of its direct UVC photolysis due to the participation of active intermediates generated during the photolysis of humic substances. These results could be important for understanding the fate of p -arsanilic acid during an UVC disinfection of wastewaters containing natural humic substances.

The effects of co-existing nitrogen species in surface water on the phototransformation of organoarsenical p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) have been investigated using a xenon lamp as a simulated solar light source. Significant enhancements of p -ASA phototransformation efficiency were observed in the presence of nitrate and nitrite, increasing with the concentration of these species and pH, whereas ammonia showed no obvious effect. The products, including inorganic arsenic species and organic derivatives, have been analyzed in order to reveal the phototransformation pathways. In the nitrate and nitrite systems, only small proportions of inorganic arsenic species were generated, with the majority of p -ASA being converted into other organoarsenical derivatives through hydroxylation, nitration, and nitrosation. Phototransformation of p -ASA in collected natural surface water was also observed. This work has implications for the phototransformation of p -ASA in nitrogen-contaminated surface water.

Cationic amphiphilic cellulose copolymers were prepared through grafting hydrophobic poly (p-dioxanone) (PPDO) chains onto hydrophilic quaternized cellulose derivatives (QC) via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reaction, which was performed in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmimCl) and using 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) or 1,8-diazabicyclo (5.4.0) undec-7-ene (DBU) as catalyst. Their chemical structures and physical properties were confirmed by FT-IR, 1 H-, 13 C-, 2D HSQC-NMR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal stability (TGA) techniques, while self-assembly behavior was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and fluorescence techniques. Both of the sizes and critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of micelles were decreased with increasing grafting contents of PPDO in the copolymers, which were in the ranges of 110–246 nm and 64–253 μg/mL, respectively. The ζ-potentials of micelles were cationic andranged from 39.1 mV to 45.4 mV. The highest encapsulation efficiencyof paclitaxel (PTX) into the micelles was 61.8% and 92.0% of loaded PTX was continuously released from micelles in phosphate buffered saline medium for 36 h.

Pure phase, regular shape and well crystallized nanorods of p-type semiconductor CaFe 2 O 4 have been fabricated for the first time by a facile molten salt assisted method, as confirmed by XRD , TEM, SEM and HRTEM. UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectra and Mott–Schottky plots show that the band structure of the CaFe 2 O 4 nanorods is narrower than that of the CaFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles synthesized by conventional method. The enhancement of the visible-light absorption is due to narrowness of the band gap in CaFe 2 O 4 nanorods. The appropriate ratio between the molten salt and the CaFe 2 O 4 precursors plays an important role in inhibiting the growth of the crystals along the (201) plane to give the desired nanorod morphology. This work not only demonstrates that highly pure p-type CaFe 2 O 4 semiconductor with tunable band structure and morphology could be obtained using the molten salt strategy, but also affirms that the bandgap of a semiconductor may be tunable by monitoring the growth of a particular crystal plane. Furthermore, the facile eutectic molten salt method developed in this work may be further extended to fabricate some other semiconductor nanomaterials with a diversity of morphologies.

This study aims to identify the highly non-specific toxicity by-products during ozonation of three cresols in wastewater. In ozonated effluents, biotoxicity increased along with increasing reaction time, followed by gradual decrease. The peak biotoxicity for ozonated o -cresol ( o -C), m -cresol ( m -C), and p -cresol ( p -C) was estimated to be 17.4, 14.8 and 5.5 times higher than that of untreated wastewater, respectively. A redox-directed approach with high-resolution mass spectrometry and toxicity prediction revealed that monomeric para-benzoquinones ( p -BQs), hydroxylated p -BQs, and dimeric p -BQs in ozonated cresols were the primary contributors to the increased toxicity. Calculations based on density functional theory indicated formation pathways of p -BQs byproducts, e.g., the formation of 2-methyl- p -benzoquinone was likely induced by ozone molecules rather than hydroxyl radicals in ozonated o -C and m -C, and the formation of p -benzoquinone during ozonation of p -C was attributed to the oxidation of methyl group to carboxyl group and subsequent decarboxylation initiated by hydroxyl radicals. Electron paramagnetic resonance and spin density calculation showed that the presence of carbon-centered cresoxyl radicals was responsible for dimeric p -BQs formation. Collectively, these results underscore significant contribution of non-halogenated p -BQs to non-specific toxicity increase in ozonated effluents.

Cresol is an important phenolic compound derived primarily from low-temperature coal tar. The presence of m/p-cresol increases the unsaturated bonds in coal tar. This increases the hydrogen consumption in the hydrogenation process. Separation and further purification of m/p-cresol can improve the value of coal tar. The boiling points of m-cresol and p-cresol are similar and therefore difficult to separate. It has become a major problem in the development of crude phenol refining. In this work, a novel complexing agent, hexamethylenetetramine, was used to complex and separate cresols. The effects of crystallization temperature, complexing agent dosage, solvent dosage and crystallization time were investigated. The process was optimized using response the surface methodology. As a result, the purity of m-cresol could reach more than 94.2% and the yield reached more than 30.4%, indicating that the process could effectively separate the mixture of m-cresol and p-cresol.

Rechargeable aluminum-sulfur batteries (Al-S) are emerging as a promising alternative energy storage system beyond lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density, abundant material resources, and economic efficiency. However, their practical application remains challenged by sluggish conversion kinetics, polysulfide shuttling, and low sulfur cathode utilization. While extensive studies have focused on enhancing polysulfide adsorption through catalytic strategies, the roles of electronic structure in dictating catalytic performance remain underexplored. Here, this work unveils the critical effect of unpaired electronic structure on the catalytic performance of single atom ferromagnetic transition metals through a systematic evaluation of three typical atomically dispersed ferromagnetic single atoms—Fe, Co, and Ni—supported on porous carbon (denoted as PC-SAFAs). Comprehensive characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the PC-SAFe catalysts, exhibiting the highest spin polarization arising from unpaired electrons, demonstrate the strongest interactions with polysulfide, thereby facilitating rapid and reversible polysulfide conversion reactions. Consequently, Al-S batteries incorporating the optimized PC-SAFe cathode achieve an impressive specific capacity of 508.8 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 500 cycles, along with much improved rate capability. This work provides a deeper understanding of the role of electronic structure in catalytic chemistry, and offers new insights for developing high-performance Al-S batteries.

Pathogenic Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) can cause intestinal diseases in humans and livestock, damage the intestinal barrier, increase systemic inflammation, and seriously threaten human health and the development of animal husbandry. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel conjugate florfenicol sulfathiazole (FST) based on drug combination principles, and investigated its antibacterial activity in vitro and its protective effect on inflammatory response and intestinal barrier function in E. coli O78-infected mice in vivo . The results showed that FST had superior antibacterial properties and minimal cytotoxicity compared with its prodrugs as florfenicol and sulfathiazole. FST protected mice from lethal E. coli infection, reduced clinical signs of inflammation, reduced weight loss, alleviated intestinal structural damage. FST decreased the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and increased the expression of claudin-1, Occludin, and ZO-1 in the jejunum, improved the intestinal barrier function, and promoted the absorption of nutrients. FST also inhibited the expression of TLR4, MyD88, p-p65, and p-p38 in the jejunum. The study may lay the foundation for the development of FST as new drugs for intestinal inflammation and injury in enteric pathogen infection.

To enhance the special selectivity and recognizability of two kinds of typical phenylarsonic compounds ( p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) and roxarsone (ROX)) in complicated water bodies, novel double-template molecularly imprinted polymers (DMIPs) were successfully synthesized via the suspension polymerization method. Subsequently, laboratory scale tests were carried out to systematically investigate the adsorption behavior and performance of p -ASA and ROX by using polymers. The result indicated that DMIPs exhibited super p -ASA/ROX sequestration and immobilization compared with non-imprinted polymers (DNIPs), which was associated with imprinting effect of polymers. The better removal efficiency of p -ASA/ROX by DMIPs were occurred in a broad pH region (3.0–9.0), whereas solution pH severely affected the uptake of DNIPs for organic arsenic compounds. According to the remarkable binding selectivity and special recognizability of DMIPs, common inorganic ions and natural organic matters (NOM) were negligible influence on targeted pollutants removal, and excellent adsorption capacity could still maintain even in the presence of interfering substances that displayed similar chemical structure with templates to a certain extent. Finally, the remarkable reusability and stable performance in continuous flow studies demonstrated the obtained DMIPs were promising candidates for simultaneously and effectively eliminating these multiple organic arsenic pollutants in harsh and complicated aquatic environment.

Graphical From tannic acid to water splitting : Amorphous Co−P/Co−N−C supported on N, P co-doped porous carbon (Co−P/Co−N−C/NPC) with a large specific surface area and abundant reactive sites is prepared. The material exhibits outstanding catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, η =234 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), oxygen evolution reaction (OER, η =374 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR, E 1/2 =0.89 V, vs. RHE). It remains a tremendous challenge to develop a low-cost, earth-abundant, and efficient catalyst with multifunctional activities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a facile and scalable avenue was developed to prepare amorphous Co−P/Co−N−C supported on N, P co-doped porous carbon (Co−P/Co−N−C/NPC) with a large specific surface area (1462.9 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant reactive sites including Co−P, Co−N and NPC. The prepared electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding catalytic performance for HER ( η =234 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), OER ( η =374 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), and ORR ( E 1/2 =0.89 V, vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). Benefiting from the excellent HER performance and outstanding OER activity, the Co−P/Co−N−C/NPC delivers a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting at a cell voltage of 1.59 V, which is comparable with the IrO 2 –Pt/C couple electrode.

Biomass electrocatalytic-conversion coupled with hydrogen generation exhibits low energy consumption, efficient hydrogen production and green syntheses of value-added chemicals. However, constructing electrocatalysts with precise electronic modulation and structures for efficient biomass electrocatalytic conversion coupled hydrogen production remains challenging. Herein, a bacterial cellulose substrate was combined in situ with a Mn-doped NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) precursor, and one-step carbonization-phosphorylation was developed for the preparation of Mn-doped nickel iron phosphate (MNFP) embedded in a P, N codoped carbon (PNC) substrate grown directly on P-doped carbonized bacterial cellulose (MNFP-PNC/PCBC). Benefiting from the three-dimensional network structure of P-doped carbonized bacterial cellulose (PCBC) and atomic doping, MNFP-PNC/PCBC exhibited an optimized electronic structure, abundant active sites and excellent electrical conductivity. Therefore, the voltages required with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and glucose electrocatalytic-conversion (GCR) to drive a current density of 50 mA cm −2 were 0.214, 1.5, and 1.34 V, respectively. Moreover, the required cell voltage of the novel electrolyser containing MNFP-PNC/PCBC as electrodes can be further reduced to 1.55 V at 50 mA cm −2 compared to overall water splitting, resulting in more than 8-time improvement in hydrogen production efficiency and production of value-added formate. This work provides a unique approach for electrocatalytic-conversion of biomass coupled with electrocatalytic hydrogen generation.
