Quick and effective sterilization of drug-resistant bacteria inevitably became an ever-growing global challenge. In this study, a multifunctional composite (PDA/Cu-CS) hydrogel mainly composed of polydopamine (PDA) and copper-doped calcium silicate ceramic (Cu-CS) was prepared. It was confirmed that PDA/copper (PDA/Cu) complexing in the composite hydrogel played a key role in enhancing the photothermal performance and antibacterial activity. Through a unique “hot ions effect”, created by the heating of Cu ions through the photothermal effect of the composite hydrogel, the hydrogel showed high-efficiency, quick, and long-term inhibition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In addition, the hydrogel possessed remarkable bioactivity to stimulate angiogenesis. The in vivo results confirmed that the “hot ions effect” of the composite hydrogel removed existing infection in the wound area efficiently and significantly promoted angiogenesis and collagen deposition during infectious skin wound healing. Our results suggested that the design of multifunctional hydrogels with “hot ions effect” may be an effective therapeutic approach for the treatment of infectious wounds.

Development of membrane-associated molecularly imprinted materials with fast and high permselectivity has been significant needed in separation engineering field. Herein, for the first time, a subversive synthesis strategy with hierarchical structure was proposed for the preparation of nanocomposite blended molecularly imprinted membranes (NBMIMs). Artemisinin, the high-efficiency antimalarial drug, was chosen as the template molecule. Instead of the direct modification of nanocomposite on membrane surfaces , the double-bonded TiO 2 @PDA was initially prepared, the blended membrane synthesis procedure was then conducted through a phase conversion process by using the as-prepared TiO 2 @PDA and PVDF powder as host materials. Importantly, the double-bonded TiO 2 @PDA-based nanocomposite in blended membranes was first proposed and applied as imprinting-initiated factor during the next artemisinin-imprinted process, leading the formation of imitated core-shell structure on membrane surfaces. It was no surprise that more excellent rebinding capacity (66.9 mg g −1 ), fast adsorption kinetics and high permselectivity coefficients (more than 17) were successfully achieved. Furthermore, an important conclusion was also obtained that TiO 2 @PDA-based nanocomposite from NBMIMs would cause significant enhancement of the rebinding capacity, that is to say, more and more artemisinin-imprinted sites would be synthesized by increasing the dosage of TiO 2 @PDA until 0.5 g. Therefore, a novel direction for the design and manipulation of MIMs materials had been successfully designed and guided for selective separation of artemisinin.

In this study, a new surface-modified biobased composite was obtained by modifying the surface of fungal mycelium microspheres (FHMs) with polydopamine (PDA). A. niger mycelium/PDA microspheres (AM/PDA microspheres) were used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the removal of U(VI) ions. This study examined the effects of the initial pH, ionic strength, and electrolyte ions on the U(VI) adsorption capacity of the AM/PDA microspheres. The results confirmed that U(VI) was successfully adsorbed on the AM/PDA microspheres. We compared their adsorption capacity with that of other adsorbents, and the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity of the AM/PDA microspheres were found to be higher than those of the other adsorbents. Equilibrium was achieved after 300 min, and the AM/PDA microspheres had a maximum adsorption capacity of 250.70 mg/g. We aimed not only to investigate the factors that affect the adsorption process but also to provide a new mycelial-based composite adsorbent for U(VI)-contaminated water.

Herein, an NIR-responsive polymeric microneedle (MN) system incorporated with metformin-loaded and polydopamine/lauric-acid-coated (PDA/LA-coated) hollow mesoporous SiO2 has been developed for transdermal delivery of antidiabetic drug (metformin). First, an antidiabetic drug was loaded within hollow mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles (HMSNs) by a diffusion method. Then, PDA as photothermal conversion agent and lauric acid (LA) as phase change material (PCM) were coated onto the HMSN to form NIR-responsive drug nanocarriers. Finally, these metformin-loaded and PDA/LA-coated HMSNs were encapsulated into poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) MNs. After insertion into skin tissue, LA could melt with the photothermal conversion of PDA under NIR light, thus enabling release of encapsulated metformin from MNs. The in vivo release behavior of metformin from MNs into skin was further studied to investigate its hypoglycemic effect on diabetic rats. Compared with the subcutaneous injection of metformin, the bioavailability of MN–NIR groups was 95.8 ± 2.7%. The antidiabetic drug can be precisely released by adjustment of exposure time and power densities of NIR light.

A hierarchical porous PU@PDA@MSNs sponge with reversible “shape memory” effect was employed in this investigation for the simultaneous adsorption of Pb(II) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). Our strategy was based on facile conjugation of carboxyl groups modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to poly(dopamine) (PDA) coated polyurethane (PU) sponge (PU@PDA), and the as-prepared PU@PDA@MSNs sponge possessed the advantages of less operation time, convenient adsorbent collection and regeneration owing to its reversible “shape memory” effect. In single system, Pb(II) and TCP adsorption were implemented at pH = 6.0, and their max monolayer adsorption amount at 298 k were 104.2 mg g −1 and 184.2 mg g −1 , respectively. However, the binary system exhibited that the coexistence of Pb(II) and TCP could obviously accelerate jointly adsorption at low concentrations, due to partial complexation between Pb(II) and TCP during the 10–30 mg L −1 of Pb(II) and TCP. While at higher concentrations, TCP adsorption was inhibited in relation to the competition from Pb(II), but Pb(II) adsorption was scarcely affected due to its smaller size and strong complexation with amino groups from PU@PDA@MSNs sponge. The PU@PDA sponge could be simply recycled and maintained stability after seven adsorption/desorption cycles in the regeneration steps.

Enzyme immobilization techniques are crucial for enhancing enzyme stability and catalytic efficiency. Traditional methods such as physical adsorption and simple covalent binding often fail to maintain enzyme activity and stability. In this study, an innovative multi-level immobilization strategy was proposed to achieve efficient targeted immobilization of nuclease P1 (NP1) by fine-tuning the surface microenvironment. Molecular simulation results revealed that the distinctive electrostatic distribution and the specific placement of basic amino acids, such as lysine, on the NP1 surface caused dopamine to preferentially adsorb on areas away from NP1’s active site. This selective adsorption facilitated the directed immobilization of NP1, while the positively charged environment generated by the co-deposited surface further enhanced NP1’s adsorption capacity. This multilevel modification was found to significantly optimize the physicochemical environment of the immobilized surface through surface characterization and enzymatic testing. This strategy greatly improves enzyme activity (3590.0 U/mg), stability, and reusability (70 % after 10 cycles). In particular, NP1 on this surface exhibited an optimal Michaelis constant (K m ) of 34.0 mM and a maximum reaction rate of 5.5 mM min −1 , demonstrating the remarkable effect of the modification strategy in enhancing the enzyme catalytic performance. The present study provides an efficient and stable immobilization platform for enzyme catalytic applications by precisely modulating the surface microenvironment and the oriented immobilization strategy, which has an important potential for practical applications. This stable and reusable NP1 platform allows for efficient DNA/RNA cleavage, facilitating its application in industrial biocatalysis, biomedical enzyme-based processes, and biosensors.

In the challenging marine environment, organic coatings often fail to provide long-lasting protection. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing multifunctional nano-pigments by utilizing hydrophobic and chemically bonded BNNSs@PDA/ODA nanosheets. The synthesis involves anchoring polydopamine (PDA) onto boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), followed by grafting octadecyl amine (ODA). This dual modification effectively prevents agglomeration of BNNSs and enhances their adhesion with silicone-epoxy resins at the interface. Comprehensive characterization confirms the successful grafting of ODA onto PDA-modified BN nanosheets, significantly improving the barrier properties of coatings. Remarkably, after immersing in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 75 days, the composite coating BNNSs@PDA/ODA-SE exhibits an impedance modulus (|Z| 0.01Hz ) of 10 10 Ω cm 2 at low frequency, surpassing that of pure SE coating by nearly three orders of magnitude. The superior protective performance of the composite coating can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the physical barrier generated by BNNSs, insoluble complexes formed by Al 3+ -PDA, and the high hydrophobic surface network provided by ODA.

Conductive hydrogel sensors have attracted attention for use in human motion monitoring detection, but integrating excellent biocompatibility, mechanical, self-adhesive, and self-healing properties, and high sensitivity into a hydrogel remains a challenge. In this work, a novel multifunctional conductive particle was designed and added to a polyacrylamide (PAM) matrix to prepare the hydrogel. It is worth noting that with the addition of polydopamine@poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PDA@PEDOT), the PAM/PDA@PEDOT hydrogel (PAPP hydrogel) showed excellent mechanical properties and high adhesion strength on different substrate surfaces. Meanwhile, the PAPP hydrogel shows outstanding self-healing properties, the mechanical properties of PAPP hydrogel broken from the middle recovered 92% tensile strength and 95% elongation at break after 12 h, respectively. Furthermore, assembled as strain wireless sensors, the PAPP sensor displays high sensitivity, where the gauge factor (GF) is 2.82, which can be used to accurately detect human facial micro-expressions and movements. Overall, the PAPP hydrogel with excellent mechanical, self-adhesive, and self-healing properties, and high sensitivity, demonstrated promise for use in wearable devices and bionic skins.

Electrically modulated surface-enhanced Raman scattering (E-SERS) enhances Raman signals by adjusting the plasmon resonance of noble metal nanostructures with an electric field. However, traditional E-SERS substrates require complex electrochemical setups, limiting portability. Piezoelectric materials, which generate surface charges under external forces, present a promising alternative. This study develops a novel self-powered E-SERS substrate by embedding piezoelectric material 0.5Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 -0.5(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 (BZT-BCT) in polyvinylidene difluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) matrix combined with silver nanoparticles. Experiments with nanogenerator piezoelectricity reveal that pressing the substrate with a finger generates current and voltage, providing an electric field for SERS enhancement. Gradual addition of weights on the substrate significantly boosts Raman signals of molecules like p-aminothiophenol (PATP), crystal violet (CV), thiram, and methyl bromide (MB). The synergy of piezoelectric effect and localized plasmon resonance achieves high sensitivity, reproducibility, and detection limits down to 10 −9 M, with an enhancement factor of 10 9 . Moreover, the sensor effectively detects trace MB veterinary drug residues in fish meat and thiram pesticide residues on apple skin, introducing a new self-powered E-SERS platform for sensitive food contaminant detection.

Coupling Ag NPs and direct Z-scheme heterojunction in Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @ZnO-PDA-Ag photocatalysts (FSZ-PDA-Ag) were constructed via the self-polymerization of dopamine. The effects of the loading amounts of Ag NPs on the structure, morphologies, and properties of the photocatalysts were investigated. Under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation, FSZ-PDA-Ag5 exhibited superior photocatalytic activity for tetracycline degradation. Direct Z-scheme ZnO-PDA heterojunction formed in FSZ-PDA-Ag could promote the transfer efficiency of electrons, and then inhibit the recombination of photo-generated charges. Meanwhile, the appropriate load of Ag NPs acted as another conductive channel to further facilitate the electrons transfer , which could extend the lifetime of the photo-generated charges. Thus, the multiple pathways of electrons transfer resulted in the enhanced photocatalytic activity , the degradation mechanism of FSZ-PDA-Ag5 was explored in detail. Moreover, this photocatalyst possessed superior cycling stability and reusability for the wastewater purification. This study may provide a reference for designing efficient and stable photocatalysts.

A polysulfone/metal–organic framework (MOF) based photocatalytic nanofiltration membrane is proposed in this study. Interfacial polymerization (IP) is the universal method of preparing nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, the (TFN) membranes were synthesized with an in-situ interfacial synthetic method to incorporate BiOCl/MIL-101(Fe)@PDA(BMP) into the polyamide (PA) selective layer. Five distinct BMP loadings (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 wt%) were established to examine the impact of additional BMP on the physicochemical characteristics of the produced TFN membranes. Under the irradiation of a xenon lamp with a power of 300 W, the water flux of M3 at a pressure of 0.6 MPa was 277.14 L m -2 h -1 . Furthermore, the BSA-based antifouling tests demonstrated the membrane’s outstanding antifouling capabilities, with a flux recovery rate reaching 94.08 %. The optimal membrane maintained a high and stable retention of tetracycline for 12 h. The interfacial synthesis of MOF/PA offers a new approach to the fabrication of photocatalytic NF membranes.

In spite of the high level of attention paid to multifunctional sensors, the flexible and multifunctionality are still intractable challenges to be tackled. Herein, we design a flexible, hydrophobic and stable multifunctional sensing material by electrostatic spinning of PVDF/ZnWO 4 @PDA (PZP). The incorporation of ZnWO 4 @PDA into PVDF nanofibers can act as an effective nucleating agent and photosensitizer, which increases the polar crystalline phase and photovoltaic properties of PVDF. With the synergy of PVDF and ZnWO 4 @PDA, PZP based piezoelectric sensors offer significantly superior electrical output (28.4 V, 600 nA) and high sensitivity (1.04 V/kPa). Moreover, it is particularly surprising that photoelectric sensor based on PZP textiles has excellent optical properties, as confirmed by the response / recovery time (0.6 s / 0.66 s) of simulated sunlight detection. Piezoelectric photoelectric effect exists in PZP textiles, as evidenced by the significant increase in the strain output current of photoelectric sensor when irradiated with sunlight. Furthermore, based on the coupling of piezoelectric effect and triboelectric effect of PZP composite, the contact out nano-triboelectric generator has enhanced the electrical output and electromechanical conversion efficiency. Therefore, this work has successfully prepared multifunctional sensing materials that integrate pressure sensing, audio recognition, underwater communication, optoelectronic detection and triboelectric energy collection, paving a new way for the flexible multifunctional sensors.
