Improving efficiency of PVDF membranes for recovering water from humidified gas streams through membrane condenser

Jingyi Cao,Jun Pan,Zhaoliang Cui,Zhaohui Wang,Xiaozu Wang,Enrico Drioli

Membrane condenser (MC) is a novel and promising operation to recover evaporated water from highly humid gas discharged from industrial production. By means of hydrophobic membrane surface, water vapor condensed on membrane retention side, finally be collected. The aim of this paper is to enhance the recovery efficiency of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane in MC process. Significantly, coating three kinds of Hyflon ADs onto PVDF membranes effectively improved hydrophobicity of original ones. Among them, Hyflon AD40L/PVDF membrane showed the best membrane and MC performance, the LEP w and water contact angle of which reached 0.43 MPa and 126°, respectively. In terms of dehydration performance in MC, by coated with Hyflon AD40L, water recovery was increased from 7.92% to 18.85%, and condensate water flow (0.35 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ) was twice that of pristine ones (0.15 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ). These results indicate that Hyflon AD composite membrane is a promising candidate for MC process with high efficiency.

Setaria-Like ZIF-8@ZnO/PVDF Nanofiber Membranes for Efficient Piezoelectric Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline

Jufei Xu,Jie Yu,Neng Hu,Qi Zhong

The continuous existence of antibiotic pollutants presents a grave threat to the ecological environment. This study aims to develop an efficient and stable hybrid photocatalytic membrane for degrading tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Inspired by setaria, the novel hybrid ZIF-8@ZnO/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (PZM) are successfully prepared by in situ growth of ZnO nanowires on PVDF membranes via hydrothermal synthesis, followed by incorporation of the metal–organic framework material ZIF-8. The preparation conditions for ZnO nanowires are systematically optimized. Results indicate that the prepared ZnO/PVDF membranes (PZ) exhibit optimal photocatalytic activity when the ZnO precursor concentration is 0.5 wt% and the hydrothermal growth time is 2 hr. Additionally, with the increased stirring rate of the reaction system, the superior piezoelectric properties of the PVDF nanofiber membranes are applied to accelerate TC degradation. Most importantly, compared to pure PZ membranes, the hybrid PZM membranes significantly enhance the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TC. Under visible light irradiation, the hybrid PZM nanofiber membranes achieve TC degradation efficiency of 75%, which is increased by 66% compared to that of ZnO powder. This investigation offers a potentially viable approach for the design and construction of hybrid photocatalytic materials for effectively eliminating emerging organic pollutants from water.

Multifunctional PVDF-TiO2 composite coating with semi-exposed structure for bidirectional oil/water selective separation

Ruiying Xu,Ximing Cui,Dongmei Wu,Jinlian Li,Naitian Zhang,Xiaoyan Yu,Yanli Zhao,Zhongjun Cheng

A semi-exposed structured PVDF-TiO 2 coating is designed via a facile spraying strategy. • A coating with bidirectional selective emulsion separation has been reported. • The coating exhibits excellent antibacterial properties. • Multifunctionality is exhibited by the prepared coating. In view of the intensified pollution of oily wastewater caused by industrialization and urbanization, as well as the separation challenges posed by the coexistence of stable oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, this paper proposes a multifunctional coating solution integrating bidirectional emulsion separation and antibacterial properties to address the problems of single function and susceptibility to microbial contamination in existing separation materials. Through a stepwise spraying strategy, a novel PVDF-TiO 2 semi-exposed composite coating was constructed. In this design, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) serves as both the film-forming substrate and a binder, immobilizing TiO 2 nanoparticles to form a micro-nano rough structure. By controlling the process, TiO 2 is semi-embedded on the PVDF surface, endowing the coating with superhydrophilicity and superoleophilicity, thereby achieving unique bidirectional wetting behavior characterized by underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity. Experimental results demonstrate that the coating not only efficiently separates O/W and W/O emulsions (separation efficiency >99 %) but also rapidly treats immiscible oil/water mixtures (with a flux as high as 5.6 × 10 4 L·m -2 ·h -1 and efficiency >98 %). Simultaneously, the exposed TiO 2 imparts photocatalytic self-cleaning ability and long-lasting antibacterial activity to the coating, effectively addressing the issue of membrane fouling. Furthermore, the coating features a simple preparation process, environmentally friendly raw materials, broad substrate adaptability, and exhibits remarkable mechanical durability. This study achieves functional synergy and complementary advantages between the film-forming property of PVDF and the functionality of TiO 2 through the semi-exposed structure, offering a novel strategy for developing multifunctional separation materials for the treatment of complex oily wastewater. Solvation-Regulated PVDF Solid Polymer Electrolytes Enabled by Borates for Dendrite-Resistant Lithium Metal Batteries

Taiyu Yang,Wujie Yang,Zhenjie Zhang,Aoyuan Chen,Hui Pan,Ping He

Despite their mechanical robustness and high-voltage stability, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solid polymer electrolytes are hindered by sluggish Li + transport, stemming from anion-dominated conduction and residual solvent-induced interfacial degradation. This study addresses these issues by introducing zinc borate (ZB) as a filler into the PVDF electrolyte and preparing the composite electrolyte PVZB, thereby reconstructing the lithium-ion solvation structure and stabilizing the electrode interface, elevating the Li + transference number to 0.49, and boosting room-temperature ionic conductivity to 3.3 × 10 −4 S cm −1 . Crucially, a rich inorganic solid electrolyte interphase enables stable cycling of Li/PVZB/Li cells for 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . NCM811/PVZB/Li cells deliver 78.5% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 4.3 V with excellent Coulombic efficiency (99.2%). Graphical A dual-enhancement strategy for PVDF electrolytes is achieved by zinc borate, which simultaneously reconstructs the Li + solvation structure and drives the formation of an inorganic-rich SEI.

Enhanced Piezoelectric Performance of PVDF Nanofibers through Negative-Polarity Electrospinning and Grid-Controlled Corona Poling

Qiu Han,Zhang Yiming,Xu Mohong,He Hezhi,Zhu Zhiwen,Huang Yunzhi

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers hold great promise for self-powered sensing and energy harvesting. However, simultaneously achieving high piezoelectric charge and voltage coefficients and a high electromechanical figure of merit remains challenging because charge generation, voltage output, and dielectric response are intrinsically coupled. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy that integrates negative-polarity electrospinning with grid-controlled corona poling to jointly amplify charge and voltage responses in PVDF nanofibrous membranes. Negative-polarity electrospinning was associated with a higher relative β-phase fraction of 96.28% without markedly changing the overall crystallinity, together with polarity-dependent differences in the near-surface chemical environment. Combined structural, surface-chemical, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric analyses suggest that these pre-existing features may influence the subsequent corona-poling response. The enhanced response is discussed within a proposed preconstruction–activation framework, in which corona poling may further align polar domains and introduce charge-related polarization states. Consistent with the proposed coupling between crystal polarization and near-surface charge-related effects, the optimized PVDF(−15) membrane delivers an ultrahigh apparent d 33,eff of 264.4 ± 7.9 pC/N, a calculated effective g 33 of 7.337 V·m/N, and a calculated effective FOM of 1.9399 × 10 –9 m 2 /N. The resulting device further exhibits high voltage sensitivity to subtle dynamic mechanical stimuli and excellent long-term fatigue resistance, highlighting its potential for diverse self-powered sensing applications. This work identifies electrospinning polarity as a useful processing variable for tuning the device-level electromechanical response of PVDF nanofibrous membranes.

Green dissolution-phase separation strategy for robust PVDF/PS membranes with improved membrane distillation performance

Shengchao Chen,Dudu Yang,Longbo Xia,Mei-Ling Liu,Kecheng Guan,Dong Zou,Hideto Matsuyama

Membrane distillation (MD) suffers from challenges in industrial applications because of membrane wetting caused by hydrophobic decay. Although surface modifications such as nanoparticle loading or chemical grafting have been explored, weak interfacial adhesion and functional component detachment persists. This paper presents a novel dissolution-phase separation strategy for fabricating robust poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/polystyrene (PS) composite membranes for MD. The hydrophobic PS microspheres and PVDF were dissolved in a PolarClean solvent to prepare a dilute solution. A PVDF base membrane was immersed in this solution and transferred to a water bath for phase separation, wherein the surface of the base membrane was dissolved in the PVDF/PS/PolarClean solution to form new PVDF/PS micro–nanostructures. The PS microspheres were entangled with molecular chains of PVDF and stably formed on the base membrane surface by controlling the solution temperature, immersion time, and concentrations of PVDF and PS in the dilute solution. The newly formed PVDF/PS micro/nanostructures significantly enhanced the antiwetting properties of the membrane. In contrast to conventional modification strategies, this method utilizes inherent hydrophobicity and micro/nanoscale structures of PVDF and PS for reinforcing the hydrophobicity of the resulting membrane, which significantly improves its stability. After 48 h of the MD process, the optimized PVDF/PS membrane exhibited a stable flux of 29.8 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 23.1 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for 35 and 100 g/L saline water with all salt rejections above 99.9 %. In addition, the membrane demonstrated excellent performance in treating simulated dye wastewater, which maintains a high water flux above 20 kg m −2  h −1 with near-complete dye rejection and 99.9 % salt rejection.

PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with enhanced mechanical and filtration performance by hydrophilic pH-response nanofibers modification

Hengyang Mao,Shouyong Zhou,Meisheng Li,Rong Wang,Zhong Ma,Huifang Xiao,Ailian Xue,Yijiang Zhao,Wenbo Peng,Chenglung Chen

Membrane separation is an efficient strategy to disrupt the spread of pathogens in an aqueous solution and produce clean water, but its performance is seriously affected by fouling caused by bioadhesive. In this study, novel pH-response attapulgite (p-ATP) nanofibers were prepared and applied in the modification of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane for bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution purification. Poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) was grafted onto the surface of attapulgite (ATP) to offer pH-response property and to improve compatibility with PVDF. p-ATP is a hydrophilic material, which can increase the anti-biofouling performance of PVDF, and its one-dimensional structure is beneficial for enhancing the inter-entanglement with organic chains in the membrane matrix. The resultant composite membrane loaded with 7% p-ATP presented 77.2% and 108.1% increase in stationary permeance and mechanical strength, respectively, than that of the pristine PVDF membrane. Furthermore, the PDMAEMA chains in p-ATP will be shrunken or swollen with the change of pH value, resulting in adsorbing or releasing water molecules. This process is effective to mitigate the adhesion between biofoulants and membrane and can break the already formed biofouling layer. So, the composite membranes are easily to be cleaned via a simple pH-change cleaning process. The molecular dynamic simulation was also conducted to analyze the high performance of the PVDF/p-ATP membrane to provide theoretical support.

Bioinspired Decoration of Superhydrophilic PVDF Membrane with Protruding Nanoparticles for Treatment of Oily Emulsion Wastewater

Bin Peng,Shaobin Wen,Jingyu Zhang,Yicheng Jiang,Haisheng Zhang,Qiang Zhang

Effectively removing oily pollutants from wastewater is crucial for environmental protection and reuse of water resources. Preparing membranes based on mussel-inspired chemistry for oil-water separation is a promising method. However, excessive biomimetic deposition could lead to a decrease in permeability of membranes. Herein, superhydrophilic layer has been prepared via the co-deposition of branched poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (BPGE) and dopamine on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface, following modification with glycerol thiols (MTG) through thiol-ene click and Michael addition reaction. Surface characterization demonstrated the in-situ generation of protruding nanoparticles on the membrane. The modified membranes exhibited superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, and achieve high separation efficiency for various oil-water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions. Besides, the membrane shows excellent reusability in cycling separation experiments. Moreover, the good chemical stability of biomimetic branched coating within certain pH ranges from 5-11 enables the modified membrane with great potential for the treatment of oily industry wastewater

Jiawei Gu,Qiongle Peng,Xuanqi Zhong,Yi Zheng,Zhiqiang Ma,Xiaoxian Song,Ruihuan Zhang,Bao Liu,Yanhu Zhang,Zhengbao Yang

The pursuit of multifunctional sensors has intensified due to their potential for integrated, efficient operation. However, realizing a flexible material that combines simplicity in the fabrication process with high performance and multifunctionality remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a multi-interface heterostructured nanofiber membrane composed of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), HfO 2 , and nano-copper is fabricated, leveraging the synergistic interplay of piezoelectric and piezo-phototronic effects for flexible, self-powered sensing. The incorporation of hafnium oxide (HfO 2 ) and nano-Cu enhances the crystallinity of the piezoelectric β -phase and improves the dielectric properties, substantially boosting electromechanical performance. The resultant piezoelectric sensor achieves an output voltage of 15V and maintains stability over 5000 cycles at 5 Hz, enabling precise detection of human motions. Meanwhile, the PVDF/HfO 2 -based photodetector exhibits broadband sensitivity (from near-UV to near-IR), high photoresponsivity (5.67 mA W −1 ), high detectivity (4.14×10 11 Jones), and rapid response (600 µs rising, 53 µs falling). Critically, the device demonstrates a 28.6% current enhancement under simultaneous light and pressure, highlighting a strong piezo-phototronic effect. This work presents a multifunctional fiber film for dual-mode sensing (pressure & light), with promising applications in wearable electronics and aerospace systems. Its straightforward fabrication and high performance offer a viable pathway toward next-generation, flexible, self-powered sensors.

Enhanced Energy Storage Performance of PVDF-Based Composites Using BN@PDA Sheets and Titania Nanosheets

Congcong Zhu,Jinghua Yin,Yu Feng,Jialong Li,Yanpeng Li,He Zhao,Dong Yue,Xiaoxu Liu

With the rapid development of modern electrical and electronic applications, the demand for high-performance film capacitors is becoming increasingly urgent. The energy density of a capacitor is dependent on permittivity and breakdown strength. However, the development of polymer-based composites with both high permittivity (εr) and breakdown strength (Eb) remains a huge challenge. In this work, a strategy of doping synergistic dual-fillers with complementary functionalities into polymer is demonstrated, by which highεrandEbare obtained simultaneously. Small-sized titania nanosheets (STNSs) with highεrand high-insulating boron nitride sheets coated with polydopamine on the surface (BN@PDA) were introduced into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to prepare a ternary composite. Remarkably, a PVDF-based composite with 1 wt% BN@PDA and 0.5 wt% STNSs (1 wt% PVDF/BN@PDA−STNSs) shows an excellent energy storage performance, including a highεrof ~13.9 at 1 Hz, a superiorEbof ~440 kV/mm, and a high discharged energy densityUeof ~12.1 J/cm3. Moreover, the simulation results confirm that BN@PDA sheets improve breakdown strength and STNSs boost polarization, which is consistent with the experimental results. This contribution provides a new design paradigm for energy storage dielectrics.

Hydrophilic modification and anti-fouling properties of PVDF membrane via in situ nano-particle blending

Xie Wanying,Li Ji,Sun Tingting,Shang Wentao,Dong Wenyi,Li Mu,Sun Feiyun

Two hydrophilic poly-vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via in situ embedment of nanoparticles (NP), i.e., TiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 , respectively, and their anti-organic-fouling and anti-biofouling were comprehensively investigated. Characterization of modified PVDF-NP membranes by XRD and FTIR exhibited that nanoparticles were embedded successfully. Series of fast filtration tests demonstrated that in contrary to virgin PVDF membrane, PVDF-NP membranes have high permeability and anti-organic-fouling ability by decreasing the possibility of organic matters deposition and accumulation. Co-existed Ca 2+ in feed solution deteriorated the organic fouling in virgin PVDF and PVDF-NP membranes, which was mainly caused by gelation of macromolecular foulants. PVDF-NP membranes were used to form MBR modules for domestic wastewater treatment, and the long-term monitoring evidenced that hydrophilic modified membranes achieved stably high COD and \( {\mathrm{NH}}_4^{+}-\mathrm{N} \) rejection efficiencies, and better organic rejection capability than mAO process. PVDF-NP membranes possessed consistently high anti-biofouling ability to maintain stable membrane permeability.

Robust and Recyclable CTZ@PVDF Membrane with Superior Emulsion Separation Efficiency and Anti-Fouling Properties

Ting Zhou,Xia Zhang,Shihan Yu,Zijie Qu,Xia Liu,Miao Li,Guodong Zhang,Xiufeng Wang,Fang Wang,Zhiqing Zhang

Wastewater treatment represents a critical challenge in environmental protection, with the effective separation of oil-in-water emulsions being a pivotal step toward sustainable water management. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) holds great promise for emulsion separation due to its excellent chemical stability. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of PVDF often leads to severe oil fouling and compromised performance. In this study, we addressed this limitation by employing tannic acid (TA) as a hydrophilic modifier to construct a TA-Co 2+ coordinated network integrated with a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) through layer-by-layer self-assembly on a PVDF substrate. The resulting CTZ@PVDF membrane exhibited hydrophilic properties with a water contact angle of approximately 8°, coupled with underwater superhydrophobicity with underwater oil contact angle ≈ 170° and strong resistance to oil adhesion. The CTZ@PVDF membrane demonstrated high efficiency in separating various oils, including kerosene, gasoline, soybean oil, and diverse organic solvents, achieving oil rejection rates exceeding 98% for both surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Furthermore, after 10 separation cycles, the membrane maintained excellent separation efficiency, and its separation flux recovery rate (FRR) could be restored to over 96% of the initial value through simple cleaning. These results showed a substantial enhancement in hydrophilicity and separation performance compared to the unmodified PVDF membrane. The developed strategy not only provided an effective pathway for designing advanced wettability-controlled materials but also offered broad potential for the treatment of oily wastewater and complex emulsion separations.
