Chitosan-derived carbon aerogel stabilized Ru nanoparticles: Facile fabrication and application in catalyzing NH3BH3 hydrolytic dehydrogenation

Yu-Yang Cao,Yi Xiong,Xiao-Li Zhang,Xin-Xin Guan,Xiu-Cheng Zheng

Developing a convenient and environmental-friendly catalyst preparation method is of great significance, while the catalytic hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is an effective in-situ hydrogen production strategy but faces many challenges including the absence of practicable catalysts. In this study, Ru nanoparticles are tightly encapsulated into the framework of chitosan (CS)-derived carbon aerogel (CCA) through a facile ice-crystal template method combined with one-step direct calcination without using any additional chemical activators. The exciting coordination between Ru 3+ and the N/O-based functional groups of CS in aqueous solution, the hierarchical porous structure of CCA and the self-doped N/O favor the tight and high dispersion of Ru NPs, facilitate mass transfer, as well as improve the hydrophilicity of the resulting catalysts. Therefore, the resulting catalysts exhibit excellent activity and durability in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB. Activated by the optimal [email protected] , the turnover frequency (TOF) and hydrogen generation rate (HGR) in the absence of any strong base are separately 136.6 min −1 and 30.3 × 10 3 mL min −1 g Ru −1 , and the apparent activation energy is 42.1 kJ mol −1 . Interestingly, the introduction of NaOH (2.0 M) can further significantly accelerate hydrogen release (TOF = 562.9 min −1 , HGR = 124.7 × 10 3 mL min −1 g Ru −1 ). Additionally, the kinetic isotope effect of 2.82 recommends that an O–H bond dissociation in water acts a dominant role in AB hydrolysis over [email protected] . This work develops a facile and environmentally friendly method for preparing supported metal-based nanocatalysts that can be effectively used in many reactions including AB hydrolysis.

Reactive interfacial oxygen vacancies in Ru/TiO2 for efficient reductive amination of bio-based carbonyl compounds

Shanhui Zhu,Ruiqi Wu,Xiaoming Li,Mei Dong,Weibin Fan

Reductive amination of carbonyl compounds such as biomass-based furfural to valuable primary amines is of great importance. However, it often suffers from low efficiency and moderate amine yield. In this work, Ru-loaded TiO 2 nanosheets (NS) enabled stable and efficient conversion of furfural to furfurylamine (FAN), with 97.0 % yield and very low apparent activation energy (20.3 kJ/mol). XPS, EPR and Raman spectra reveal presence of abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies on Ru/TiO 2 -NS, and the intrinsic activity of various Ru/TiO 2 linearly increased with their oxygen vacancy concentration. DFT calculation confirms that oxygen vacancies induce to generate coordinatively unsaturated Ru species, which enhances activation of key intermediate imine. The activation energy of FCH 2 NH (F, furan group) hydrogenation to FAN has been remarkably decreased from 1.07 eV to 0.82 eV on Ru/TiO 2 -NS. Our results illustrate the potential of utilizing interfacial oxygen vacancy sites in enhancement of reaction performance for biomass amination.

N-Formylation of Amines with Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen Catalyzed by Ionic Liquid-Assisted Ru Complexes

Jian Fang,Zhi-Qiang Wang,Xinjia Wei,Yuan Ma,Honghui Gong,Xue-Qing Gong,Zhenshan Hou

The N-formylation reaction of various amines with CO2 is a promising method to utilize CO2 for the production of high value-added chemicals. Herein, an efficient Ru catalyst system consisting of Ru complex ([PPN][Ru(CO)3Cl3]) and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen phosphate ([Bmim]2[HPO4]), has been developed for the N-formylation reaction. Activity evaluation demonstrated that the catalyst system exhibited good to excellent yields of formamides under very mild conditions with the assistance of ionic liquids (ILs). Furthermore, the catalyst system could be reused at least five times with a slight loss of activity in N-formylmorpholine production. Further characterization by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the ILs ([Bmim]2[HPO4]) could facilitate the adsorption of CO2 by a concerted action of both cations and anions of the ILs to form phosphorus carbonate intermediate, thus effectively promoting the reaction. DFT calculations demonstrated that the formation of Ru–H was the first step, and then the CO2 absorbed by [Bmim]2[HPO4] inserted directly into Ru–H by cooperating with the Ru sites to form HCOO– species. After that, formate species dissociated from Ru catalysts and dehydrated to form formamides by the catalytic action of Ru complex and the basic IL.

Ru/TiO2 Catalysts with Size-Dependent Metal/Support Interaction for Tunable Reactivity in Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Yaru Zhang,Xiong Su,Lin Li,Haifeng Qi,Chongya Yang,Wei Liu,Xiaoli Pan,Xiaoyan Liu,Xiaofeng Yang,Yanqiang Huang,Tao Zhang

The Ru/TiO2 catalyst serves as a representative metal/support interaction system with tunable reactivity in catalytic processes. Herein, by varying the metal loadings of Ru from 0.5 to 4 wt % to regulate the size of Ru on support, the catalytic performances of Ru/TiO2 catalysts in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) can be further refined. An improved FTS activity is acquired when metal size increases, while long carbon-chain products (C5+ hydrocarbons) prefer to be generated from the small-sized Ru catalyst. With intensive characterizations, it is indicated that the coating of TiOx on Ru greatly depends on the size of Ru, with the TiOx overlayer being enhanced on small Ru metal particles. This size-dependent metal/support interaction on Ru/TiOx therefore leads to a varied reduction degree of Ru, which possesses an alterable capability toward CHx transformation on Ru. As a result, the small-sized Ru/TiOx catalyst shows a preference toward the chain growth in FTS by suppressing the competitive methanation on Ru/TiOx. Our results demonstrate that the size-dependent metal/support interaction plays an important role on determining the catalytic performance of Ru/TiOx in FTS, and it can be used as an effective method to tune the reactivity of metal nanoparticles in catalytic processes.

Asymmetric Hydrogenation of 3,5-Bistrifluoromethyl Acetophenone in Pilot Scale with Industrially Viable Ru/Diphosphine–Benzimidazole Complexes

Liang Xu,Zhi-Hong Huang,Christian A. Sandoval,Lian-Quan Gu,Zhi-Shu Huang

A novel efficient asymmetric hydrogenation (AH) process was developed for the preparation of (R)-1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)ethanol (3), using a catalyst Ru/(4R,5R)-(+)-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxoane-(R,R-Diop)-2R-(α-methylmethanamine)-4,7-dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (R-D-Me-BIMAH) in toluene in the presence of potassium t-butoxide. Various hydrogenation parameters, such as ligand, solvent, and substrate-to-catalyst (S/C) ratio, were investigated. The hydrogenation was carried out for four times on a 5 kg scale at 30 atm and 25 °C with S/C of 20 000 with an enantiomeric excess of >89%.

Single Atom Ru Doped CuTi Nanozyme with Precisely Programmed Cascade Catalysis for Amplified Oral Cancer Therapy

Guanmeng Zhang,Ludan Zhang,Zuhao Shi,Zihan Wang,Ji Shen,Daping He,Dingsheng Wang,Yuguang Wang

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) lacks effective low-toxicity treatments. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) offers a tumor-specific approach by converting hydrogen peroxide into toxic radicals. However, its efficacy is limited by insufficient H2O2, high glutathione (GSH) levels that neutralize the radicals, and reliance on a single cell death pathway. Herein, we report a precisely programmable catalytic platform consisting of Ru single atoms anchored on a CuTi layered double hydroxide (Ru CuTi-LDH) nanozyme. The Ru sites not endow the nanozyme with superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity and enable precise control over its catalytic functions, which also include peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Together, these features orchestrate a precise cascade reaction to amplify therapeutic efficacy for OSCC. Light-triggered superoxide radicals (•O2–) are converted to H2O2 by Ru sites, fueling Fenton-like reactions at Cu centers that generate cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Meanwhile, Ru CuTi-LDH depletes GSH and generates O2 to alleviate tumor hypoxia. This chemical reprogramming amplifies oxidative damage and sensitizes tumor cells to cuproptosis. Additionally, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress triggered by the cascade activates paraptosis, establishing three distinct cell death pathways simultaneously. This approach achieved 84.7% tumor inhibition and prolonged survival in an orthotopic OSCC model. This work presents a chemical strategy that addresses fundamental CDT limitations through cascade catalysis with atomic-level tunability.

Redox-Programmable Construction of RuO2/Ru Interfacial Nanostructures for Enhanced Hydrogen Generation via Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Haoyue Shi,Chenchen Niu,Wenfeng Song,Helong Zhang,Hao Zhang,Chuxiong Qiu,Kai Xu,Yi Xie

Metal/oxide interfaces often exhibit superior catalytic properties, yet their controllable construction remains challenging. Here, we report a redox-programmable ethanol-mediated solvothermal strategy that enables stepwise transformation of RuO2 and a RuO2/PdO mixture into RuO2/Ru and RuO2/Ru/Pd interfacial nanostructures, and ultimately metallic Ru and Ru/Pd nanoparticles, respectively, under mild conditions. Temperature- and time-dependent studies combined with microscopic analysis reveal a surface-initiated reduction mechanism and a three-stage evolution pathway (RuO2 → RuO2/Ru → Ru0). The interfacial mixed-phase catalyst delivers superior hydrogen generation performance in ammonia borane hydrolysis compared with both pure RuO2 and fully metallic nanoparticles, demonstrating a nonmonotonic phase–activity relationship. The enhanced activity originates from synergistic bifunctional catalysis at the metal/oxide boundary, where metallic Ru promotes hydride activation and oxide domains facilitate water dissociation. These findings highlight the critical role of controllable redox evolution in tailoring interfacial structures. This work establishes a comprehensive structure–evolution–function framework for the rational design of high-performance metal/oxide catalysts via low-temperature redox control.

Reverse hydrogen spillover accelerates electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia on Ru/WO3-x in acidic media

Zhu Weijie,Lin Yu-Chang,Cong Jianlong,Zhao Mengting,Li Jiahao,Hao Cong,Jia Jun,Wang Xinlu,Huang Yunhui,Lin Yan-Gu,Yang Gang,Yao Fen,Liang Hanfeng

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 - RR) offers a promising route to sustainable ammonia synthesis, potentially replacing the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. While often studied in neutral or alkaline media, NO 3 - RR in acidic conditions is particularly relevant due to widespread industrial acidic nitrate wastewater, yet it remains challenging due to corrosion and dominant hydrogen evolution. To address this, we designed a corrosion-resistant Ru/WO 3- x heterostructure that spatially separates proton and nitrate adsorption sites. Here, we show that a reverse hydrogen spillover effect, where the WO 3- x support stores and transports protons to surface Ru active sites, dramatically enhances hydrogenation kinetics and suppresses parasitic hydrogen evolution. This catalyst achieves an ammonia Faradaic efficiency of 94.09% at a high current density of 500 mA cm −2 and a working potential of 0.026 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, we demonstrate a sulfide-nitrate “batterolyzer” with a discharge power density of 43.4 mW cm −2 . This work reveals an effective proton-management strategy for efficient acidic NO 3 - RR, advancing its potential for coupled ammonia synthesis and wastewater treatment.

Low-Temperature Selective Deep Hydrogenation of Acenaphthene over Ru-Based Catalysts: Tuning the Metal–Support Interactions

Lili Tian,Zhen Guo,Guoqing Sun,Guangya Feng,Kaige Zhang,Danni Liu,Wenli Zhao,Xiangwen Zhang,Qingfa Wang,Li Wang

The low-temperature deep hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) remains a challenge for producing high-value chemicals or high-density fuels. Herein, Ru/anatase TiO2 (101) catalysts were prepared using an electrostatic adsorption method combined with different reduction treatments (NaBH4, N2H4·H2O, and H2/Ar as reductants). The metal–support interaction (SMI) was tailored, and uniformly dispersed Ru nanoparticles (size <2 nm) were obtained for all catalysts. For the Ru/TiO2 catalyst reduced by NaBH4 (Ru/TiO2–NaBH4), the overencapsulation effect of TiO2–x overlayer induced by SMSI is eliminated using NaBH4 reduction to expose more metal sites. The moderated metal–support interaction favors the generation of more electron-deficient Ru species (Ruδ+). These active Ruδ+ species exhibit excellent ability to promote H2 dissociation and enhance the isomerization rate of saturated aromatic compounds. Due to the enhanced adsorption of aromatic molecules, Ru/TiO2–NaBH4 exhibits superior hydrogenation performance and good stability. Under mild conditions (60 °C, 4 MPa), Ru/TiO2–NaBH4 achieves 87.9% conversion of acenaphthene (Ace) within 1 h and then up to 100% conversion with a 94.4% cis-selectivity of PHA within 3 h, with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 2797.7 h–1, and the catalyst could be reused three times without significant loss of activity. This study provides new insights into the rational design of highly efficient PAHs deep hydrogenation catalysts under low-temperature conditions.

Methanation Suppression and Hydrogen Production Enhancement in Methanol Steam Reforming by K-Doped Ru/CeO2 Catalyst

Riyang Shu,Haozhe Huang,Bin Hu,Long Xie,Xintong Chen,Zhipeng Tian,Chao Wang,Jingtao Zhang,Sheng Yang,Xianglong Luo,Ying Chen

Methanol steam reforming is a popular technology for hydrogen production, but it usually suffers from the methanation side reaction and low hydrogen yield. Herein, a novel K-doped Ru/CeO2 catalyst was proposed to suppress methanation and enhance hydrogen production. The Ru-5K/CeO2 catalyst doped with 5 wt % K achieves 100% methanol conversion, a 0.578 mol·g–1·h–1 hydrogen production rate, and 66.4% hydrogen selectivity at 450 °C, with only 3.6% CH4, which is much better than other Ru–K/CeO2 catalysts. Under the same conditions, Ru/CeO2 and Ru-10K/CeO2 only achieve 0.268 mol·g–1·h–1 and 0.224 mol·g–1·h–1 hydrogen production rates, 64.1% and 64.5% hydrogen selectivity, respectively. The promotion effect and mechanism of K doping on the methanation suppression of Ru/CeO2 catalysts in the methanol steam reforming process were investigated in detail. Characterization and experimental results show that suitable K doping in the Ru/CeO2 catalyst enhances the metal–carrier interactions and induces the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies at the same time. And the hydrogen atom dissociation and water–gas shift reactions on the catalyst surface are promoted significantly. Additionally, in situ DRIFTS characterization presents that the Ru-5K/CeO2 catalyst dominates the formation of the bridged carbonyl (Ru-CO-K) intermediate. This inhibits methane formation due to the interaction between Ru and K, and strengthens the connection of CO generated by methanol decomposition. The increase in K leads to the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies in CeO2, which promotes the dissociation of water to form hydroxyl groups and hydrogen and facilitates the water–gas shift reaction. The conversion of bridged carbonyl groups to CO2 and H2 is also accelerated, and methane formation through this dual regulatory mechanism is thus inhibited. This work offers fresh perspectives and a useful reference for hydrogen production, contributing to the ongoing discussion on the role of alkali metals in promoting methanol steam reforming.

Single-atom Ru anchored UiO-66-Cl/PEDOT:PSS for ultrasensitive detection of Amaranth and Allura Red

Zhu Yuchuan,Li Junhong,Yang Ruoxi,Bao Mingqiu,Hao Yakai,Chen Huijin,Yue Ruirui,Shu Jinbing,Duan Xuemin

A ternary nanocomposite, PEDOT:PSS/UiO-66-Cl@Ru, was successfully synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal strategy for the ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of amaranth (AM) and Allura Red (AR). The conceptual advance of this work lies in the synergistic integration of halogen-induced intrinsic electroactivity, maximal atomic utilization of single-atom Ru, and the conductive bridging effect of PEDOT:PSS. This ternary design effectively overcomes the conductivity bottleneck of MOFs while delivering exceptional catalytic site density and enhanced interfacial stability. The resulting PEDOT:PSS/UiO-66-Cl@Ru platform delivered remarkable analytical performance, featuring wide linear ranges of 0.05–140 µM for AM and 0.07–50 µM for AR. The low limits of detection were 16.6 nM and 23.3 nM, with high sensitivities of 0.179 µA µM⁻¹ cm⁻² and 0.247 µA µM⁻¹ cm⁻² for AM and AR, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Finally, the successful application of PEDOT:PSS/UiO-66-Cl@Ru in detecting AM and AR within beverage samples validates its practical utility for on-site food safety screening. Synergy of Ru and NiAl-LDH for efficient selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds under visible light

Ye Cai,Jingjing Zhang,Yilei Zhang,Jinghua Sun,Mengting Gao,Pengqi Zhu

The Ru/NiAl-LDH catalyst was designed for the selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds under visible light irradiation and mild conditions (55 °C, atmospheric H₂), and it achieved 99% conversion of phenol with 99% selectivity to cyclohexanol. XPS and DFT calculations confirmed that Ni 2+ in the NiAl-LDH support donates electrons to the Ru center, creating an electron-rich Ru site that enhances H 2 activation. In situ DRIFT studies verified that visible-light irradiation promotes the heterolytic dissociation and adsorption of H 2 on Ru active sites. Additionally, surface hydroxyl groups on the NiAl-LDH facilitate phenol adsorption and concentration near active sites. The catalyst demonstrated broad applicability to substituted phenolic compounds and excellent recyclability over multiple cycles. The synergistic effect between the electron-rich Ru sites and the hydroxyl groups on the NiAl-LDH surface ensures highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol.
